With the #18 pick in the 2k7 Draft, the Golden State Warriors take...

MARCO BELINELLI!

mbelinelli02.jpg

Now, a collective: WTF!!!  Belinelli, the first european player taken in this draft AND most known for dropping 25 points in 28 minutes on Team USA, is an odd pick for our Warriors.  I like this pick more than grabbing some big stiff like Jason Smith or Josh McRoberts.  We needed a guy with some all around skills and this guy might have those tools!  But for some reason, this is a little disapponting.  Lets hope there are some trades in the works...

not what we need...
FROM NBADRAFT.NET:

"Tends to get caught up in shooting from the perimeter instead of driving the lane and drawing fouls..."

Ughhh, we saw that way too much last year.

Better than a big stiff
Definitely better than Smith or McRoberts, although The Painted Area calls him a poor man's Vince Carter (and not in the good way).

veni, vidi, vici
maybe nellie sees a little marciulonis in him.  does this open the door to trade j-rich?

by kristakahashi on Jun 28, 2007 6:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i like this pick
i may be in the minority but i think this could be a good pick. this guy can shoot it, and it was tough last year watching an average shooting team continue to jack up 3s. he should be able to help. this pick will look even better to me if we get herbert hill in the second round.

of course the dubs may not even keep the guy so we'll see what happens.

by AJC3317 on Jun 28, 2007 6:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it's an okay pick...
However, if he's just going to keep shooting threes even if he's not making them, I don't want to see that again.

he would have been a better pick.

I somewhat agree
to that pick that Javaris would have made a better fit if we are losing people such as Monta to a trade due to attitude problemas.

Brent Barry/Vinny Del Negro comparison
and his short two clips there were not bad. He has those "Bones" ups.

Even if you don't like the guy Ginobili has that fire you want in your guards, just like Baron has it in droves, does this guy have it?

No more Nikoloz Skita Tskitishvili's, thanks.

by back2back51s on Jun 28, 2007 6:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
since when did we need another player who shoots alot of threes and can dunk in transition?  Im hoping to hear that trade wind blowing

There has to be a trade
doesn't there?  There's no way we can go into next season with the same team we had, plus belinelli...I guess he's the perfect guy for "Nelli ball"...I think that's a webpin in the making

He's got another name that most commentators will stumble over. Bellie-Nellie? Behlinely? Belleeneelee?

LOL lets not talk too soon
I agree it was a lil bit of a shocker. I thought we were gonna snag that guy the Lakers got. But from the highlights that ESPN showed it looks as if he's an Italian Monta Ellis, with a bit of Manu. I wonder if that's a hint about moving Monta? I mean we need some big forwards like AL and Jax & Barnes. I hope our next two picks are a little bigger than Marco. Hey! another Marco, [Marco Scutaro] MARCO POLO CHANTS WILL FORM THIS YEAR I GUARANTEE!

HA HA HA!!!!
Love it!!!

Love it because no one absolutely no one called it. That Sly old fox Nellie. Beli also seems to have one skill that never seems to go out of style: the ability to absolutely fill it up from range. Apparently the best shooter in all of Europe. Could he be this generation's Mullin?

Also love it 'cos I think it might portend another move for a big banger who can actually play.

We all know know Nellieball, but do we know....

*BELINELLI BALL??????*

I also love this pick...
Its Nelson.... Trust him man he is great at evaluating talent. I think this guy could be really good, he is long athletic and can shoot it.

This does seem to set up the W's to trade Monta or JR! I am excited more now then I was before the pick.

I wanted the Warriors to draft him..told all my friends, my pops, his friends...they laughed at me.

I din't really like this pic
I would have preferred someone like Jermareo Davidson to play along side Beans. Marco isn't even the best European player from what I've read. I was more interested in Rudy Fernandez or that Finnish kid. Instead, we get this guy who kinda resembles Mano Ginobli, but I highly doubt he'll be anywhere near as good as Manu.

Wait a minute, Is Thiago Splitter available still? Shoot, we need a rebounder more than anything. Oh well, I hope he proves me wrong.

by Jeremy Belvins on Jun 28, 2007 6:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

bellinelli
yes, he's another shooter, but considering what was available, i like it.  all the athletic big men were off the board.  taking who they thought was the best available player gives you more tradeable assets for the future.

by kristakahashi on Jun 28, 2007 6:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

YES...I was right
I was very high on this kid while the Warriors were in the playoffs. I wanted them to draft him this year so bad... I cant believe they did it! I started to think that they wouldnt because of the lack of attention his name got, I heard nothing about him. BUT I WAS RIGHT! Im glad to see me and the 2 guru's had the same opinion. MAKE ME PROUD BELINELLI..check out youtube, youll see a pretty nice 2 hand-360.. some nice fade away Js too well behind the line. Check it out.

Draft Express says he can defend
NBADraft.net says otherwise.

The quote:

Defensively, Belinelli is much more solid than many of the other young European prospects. In fact, in the past two seasons he was primarily used as a defensive specialist by his coach, as he can effectively guard multiple positions in Europe. He has good footwork and lateral quickness, which along with his length and quick hands in the passing lanes make him a great asset in pressure defense situations. He usually guards the opponents' best backcourt player. Climamio plays both man to man and zone, and his effectiveness is quite the same.

Pietrus/Barnes replacement with a better shot?

by back2back51s on Jun 28, 2007 6:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

he can't replace Barens or France
at his size

He could replace Monta though as a combo guard

by Zig on Jun 28, 2007 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

6 - 6 and 200
That's Pietrus/JRich size.

I don't see him as a 3-4 though, even as a backup under Nellieball and undersized everything, so I get what you're saying.

by back2back51s on Jun 28, 2007 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

finely
a guy that will jack up 3's and shoot a good percentage, I expect baron to find him in the corners for a lot of wide open 3's.

who knows
it seems buke is gone

or could this mean that either Monta or J_rich are leaving?

I can't see us going into the year with another combo guard.

make a trade for a big.Pree said Monta is on the block, hopefully someone bites.

I don't want to rely on the 2nd round and free agency to fix our problems inside. The draft or a  trade is what we need now.

Completely asinine
...at face value.  All i'm saying is that this better be part 1 of a magic trick.  And it better end w/the acquisition of a rebounder.  ok mullin, now for the Prestige!

With Belly Nelly - Monta or J-Rich are Out
Even though it's nellie ball...we have too many guards now.  Monta or Jrich are on their way out via trade.

compares him to Ray Allen. I watched his video on youtube and liked what I saw. Looks like he'll excell at nellie-ball.

This is what's going down.
  • Pietrus and Barnes, GONE.

  • Ellis, TRADED.
  • Buke, REPLACES him.

the problem is
no one available would have fixed the warriors problems inside without compromising their speed.  who did you want?  splitter?  smith?  mcroberts? one slow plodder after another.  i'd like to see people list actual solutions instead of blindly blasting the pick.

by kristakahashi on Jun 28, 2007 6:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

best for what was left....
I would have loved Sean Williams and almost died when he got pick by NJ (Rudy Gay vs. POB flashback) but for what was left.. I'm satisfied. I remember wanting Belinelli when I saw clips of him and without anybody really (except for Critentton..I'd rather take JellyBelly over him), I'll just wait and hope for a trade somehow.

Nuts or Guts?
Along with everyone else not named Mully and Nellie (and perhaps Bellie-Nellie), I was completely shocked with the pick. However, I decided long ago to give Mully/Nellie the benefit of the doubt UNLESS they were to pick McRoberts. After taking a second look at Belinelli's game, he could fit pretty well for us. Looks athletic enough to play in our system and (aside from a shooting slump this Spring) is a lights-out shooter. Hey, if we're going to keep jacking up treys, might as well have some real shooters on the team. I'm still holding out hope for KG!!

Decent Job Drafting Europeans in Rd 1
Let's look at the last 5 first round picks that Dubs have made:

2006 - Notorious POB (didn't make All-NBDL team)
2005 - I Like IKE (a couple of monster games per season and little else so far)
2004 - Biedrens (probably Warrior most coveted by other teams)
2003 - Pietrus (frustrating to watch sometimes, but definitely contributed to success of team last season)
2002 - Dunleavy (let's not go there)

We've had some good luck - well, at least better luck - with draft Euros vs US players in Rd 1. Let's hope the streak continues.

Belinelli will be a star!
I'm from Italy and i've watched dozens of Belinelli's game. You don't know him.. he is a future star! He has had a difficult season in a team with many problems but till a year ago he was considered the best european talent together with Bargnani. He averaged 16-17 ppg in the italian league which is surely more competitive than NCAA...he played with adult men.. not children :)
