Mullin: Yes or No? "WE SHOCKED THE WORLD TWICE"

Did you like the overall draft for the Warriors? I did. I think the trade for Brandan Wright was a great deal and he could be possibly a Tyrus Thomas kinda guy, but better.

Everyone here thinks Mullin made a terrible deal, and he traded a supposed All Star! When I heard the deal, I couldn't believe it! I really didn't believe it, but once I read more about Wright I really liked him!

Do you like what Mullin did to get Wright? He shocked the world with the trade, isn't that our trademark, to shock the world? Or do you think it was a bad deal and whats your reasoning except for his heart and soul, blah, blah.....

Stephen A. Smith says we made a great deal and says that the Bobcats should not have made the trade.

i, and i'm sure everyone else on here, could give a sh!t less about what he says. just because he supports the deal doesn't change anything about how anyone else personally feels about it

Jrich is going to be a hall of famer.

we really didnt shock the world
Bobcats were looking for a veteran presence. they got the guy in Jrich. everybody thought jason was the most logical person to be traded if the warriors ever traded and it happened. i bet you if we mullin n nellie had the chance, they would of taken YI at 8 if he was available which would even be more less of a shock.

Stephen A. Smith
never smiles, and his eyebrows  are always together like he's angry all the time or something

Stephen A.
makes his judgements based on opinion and very little factual evidence.  Sometimes his opinions are right on and he seems insightful, other times his opinions are completely off and he sounds like a jackass.  In this case, he could be right, he could be wrong.  If Wright busts(knock on wood) the Bobcats are big winners and Smith is wrong, if Wright explodes and is KG 2.0 he might have a point.

Steven A. Smith is full of it!
What was he talking about? The bobcats got exactly what they wanted, a proven player. The warriors are the ones that shouldn't have made the deal.
J-Rich has more value than an unproven rookie who really doesn't answer any of our needs. He is too small to be a real low post threat and did not have great rebounding stats in college. This was just a salary purge. The only question is why didn't we get something of real value to our team? And don't tell me Brandon Wright was worth a legitimate scorer AND a second round draft pick!

Time will only tell.....
Sites have said that Wright reminds them of Chris Bosh. If he does become a Chris Bosh type of player, its a fantastic deal. But once again time will tell!

The way I view the trade is.....
Undecided.

It's a high risk high reward play.  Wright could be an amazing player that is better than JRich ever was.  Or he could be another in a long line of draft busts.  With JRich we pretty much knew what we were getting and, though that was good, (well at times great) we could replace him with players that we have.  Wright fills a position that we can't easily replace.

All that said, I won't be satisfied if the W's don't get someone great this offseason.  KG, Kobe, hell Jermaine would all look nice in W jerseys.  We started this offseason with the best set of trade chips of any major team.  How can I say this about Monta, AH, JR, and AB?  Well I'm a homer, but still.

So I will be disappointed if we can't match contracts with the TWolves and get KG in Oakland.   If we do, this trade is awesome regardless of whether or not Wright is included.  If not, this trade sucks (unless Wright turns into a new KG).

i won't be happy until...
...Wright steps on the court and shows me something.  We've drafted busts before and i'm through praising a player until he proves himself on the court.  6'10" 200, 7'4" wingspan... well lahdeedah.  Warriors drafted Todd Fuller at #8 and POB at #9.  PROVE YOURSELF FIRST!!!

JRich did it every season he played for the Warriors.  He proved himself.  Every day.

And that's what bugs me.

All-Star? Hall of Famer?
He has never been the former and you must be joking if you're talking about the latter.

He is not even top 5 in his position (Kobe, Wade, Carter, Allen, Pierce, Ginobili, Iverson, Joe Johnson, Michael Redd, and you could argue for Ben Gordon and Rip Hamilton)

You can love Richardson all you want, but that doesn't make him great.

He's merely good. There's a difference.

oh, and remember Antawn Jamison?
People said we lost the heart of the team , blah blah blah, loyalty, blah blah blah.

And people have said now "what has cap space ever won"

NEWSFLASH:

Jamison was beloved, but he wasn't that great for us.

We dealt him for cap space.

Guess what?

We used the cap space and got Dale Davis and Speedy Claxton.

Dale Davis and Speedy Claxton got us...Jessica Alba and Baron Davis

The thing about cap space? It's not sexy. It's not flash. You can't sell it.

Why?
Because fans are shortsighted. Fans are, well, fanatics, you don't look ahead, you don't see the big picture.

Well i'm showing it to you now:
CAP SPACE MATTERS. DONT JUST LOOK AT WHAT YOU LOST, LOOK AT WHAT THE SPACE WILL BE USED ON IN THE FUTURE.

you wanna bitch about losing Richardson? Fine. Then burn your Baron Davis jersies as well and delete all those nudie Alba pix you went to look for after she was all over GSoM front page.

Cuz if you want to make moves, you gotta play the cap game. We did it with Jamison, it worked out eventually even though apparently, no one here wants to admit it. We're doing it again with Richardson, you can ignore and whine more, or you get wise up and THINK.

Richardson. Farewell, good bye, thanks, wutever. But let's leave it at that.

Look ahead, not down and back.

Great post
Great deal.

The problem as I see it is it forces management to decide whether we want to "go for it" in the next two years or if we want to go with the youth movement.

Clearly, with Wright we match up much better with the T-Wolves in any KG type deal (although I'm adamant about keeping either Biedrins or Wright and not giving up both).

However, if Wright becomes as spectacular a player as predicted then a core of Monta, Biedrins, and Wright would be NASTY in the next five years and would be a solid core to compete with the up and coming Seattle's and Portland's of the West.

The way I look at it, the only way we'll get KG is if we give up at least 2 of the 3 of our young core and probably Harrington and the 10mil exception (not sure if this matches up tho).  So if we do decide to go for KG (it's easy to imagine Nellie pushing for Mullin to pull the trigger), then we'll have Jax, KG, and BD in their late 20's early 30's for the next few years whereas a Monta/Wright/Biedrins combo would only be like 24 after a couple years.

EITHER WAY, even tho we lost all of J-Rich's above-average talent for a SG, our roster has gained a much more valuable trade piece (and hopefully...a better player) at a much cheaper cost.

by sadleavy on Jun 29, 2007 4:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Well said
The "valuable trade piece" angle is pretty key here, I think. Reasonable people can disagree on how much this hurts or helps the team on court, in the short term. It's fair to say the loss of JRich will affect not just the overall production of the team, but also the delicate team chemistry. It's pretty clear that by the end of the year we had a kind of magical synergy going -- that we were much greater than the sum of our parts. Losing one of the key parts could be an immediate step back.

In terms of team value, though, there's almost no question this was a fantastic move, and in the immediate term. In the eyes of GMs, an athletic freak rookie PF from UNC with through-the-roof upside has a ton more value than a good (even very good) PG making $12M a year. That's just the way it is. With one bold move, we increased the the overall value of this team, by a lot. Stephen A. Smith may be a loudmouthed jackass, but he does have his finger on the pulse of the NBA; you could even argue that he helps to create that pulse. When he says this trade was a total steal for the Ws, it speaks volumes.

So basically, if we're totally done trading, this could be a good or bad move, depending on how quickly Wright pans out, and what he pans out into. If we're not done trading -- if, say, this an interim move on the way to a trade for KG or Jermaine O'Neal or someone else -- we absolutely cleaned up.

And yeah, I still think we're very much in the KG hunt, but that's a topic for another diary.

I meant SG, not PG. PGs have a ton of value too.
