Top Free Agents (According to Y!)

Market watch: Top free agents

After reading that article, I find there are a few people worth going after that could probably contribue immediately.

Gerald Wallace is a stud in my eyeballs. We'd be crazy not to make an offer. I also wouldn't mind going after Varejao, Milicic, and Nocioni, but other than that I can't really see anything else I'd like

Who else are notable Free Agents, and more importantly who do you think the warriors should go after in the free agent pool this offseason?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Realistically... no one. But unrealistically....
Wallace. Rashard Lewis is very dimensional... and he's not that athletic either. Gerald Wallace would fit in perfectly.

If Jrich was traded mainly for financial reasons (resigning Biedrins and Monta), the Warriors cannot afford anyone else. Gerald would probably want Jrich's salary-like money. I like Nocioni, but the Bulls arent letting him go... ANYWHERE.

I wouldnt think the money
would go to monta n AB unless mullin puts us again into rebuilding mode. so i would think the money would go to a big free agent hopefully wallace or making a deal to land garnett here

by GSwarrior on Jun 30, 2007 5:19 PM PDT   0 recs

we could get wallace
All we have to do is trade Monta Ellis, force the team that's getting him to also eat the salary of Adonal Foyle and send us a mid-first round draft choice.

That relieves us of the obligations to Foyle the next two years and the need to extend Ellis. It also gives us another draft pick next year, which means a shot at finding a producer on a cheap rookie contract.

With the immediate savings, throw the money at Gerald Wallace, 3 years younger than J-Rich IIRC and a ridiculous rebounder and defender.

That would give us a monster front line, but you'd have to find another shooter to come off the bench because Wallace has no J.

by OptionZero on Jun 30, 2007 5:31 PM PDT   0 recs

If
we gave up Monta and actually got the team to eat Foyles contract, which in and of itself is highly unlikely, it's even more unlikely that they'd happily toss a 1st round draft pick at us. We'd be giving up a talent in Monta to the team to solely take the contract of Foyle.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Jun 30, 2007 6:11 PM PDT   0 recs

yes
On the flip side, Foyle's contract is pretty ugly, it will probably take a chip like Ellis to convince a team to do it.

A draft pick should definitely come our way with an expiring contract.

I like next years draft
OOWOWOWOWOW why dont we just trade for next years draft HAHAHAHAHA Derrick Rose OJ Mayo Michael BEASTLY!!!!

Nocioni
would be an excellent pickup if Barnes walks--they're almost the same player. But if you're gonna pay one of them, it probably makes the most sense to keep the guy you already have. Of course, I'd choose Wallace out of that group, for all of the obvious reasons--but there are a lot of teams that are going to be bidding for him.

Here's a full list of free agents in 2007.

With Ellis supposedly starting at 2, one huge need is a backup point guard. Steve Blake might be a nice player on this team, but he started enough in Denver last year that he might convince a team to pay him more than he's worth. Boykins is also a good possibility, but he too might want $5 mil or so (he just opted out of a guaranteed $3 mil).

by ffgolden on Jun 30, 2007 6:15 PM PDT   0 recs

Steve Blake is underrated
He is pretty good. Not good enough to run this team as a starter.... but good enough to take over when Baron is injured/resting.

Sarunas
I wouldn't mind seeing more of Sarunas this year; he's only got one year left.

A new addition like Boykins or Knight would require a multiyear contract and wouldn't, IMHO, by an upgrade over cabbages.

While Sarunas isn't super athletic, he's historically been a better 3pt shooter than he's shown, and he can run the pick and roll- we saw flashes of real good passing.

He needs to find that shot back and cut down on the flashy plays when they aren't necessary and , like alot of warriors, be more efficient.

by OptionZero on Jun 30, 2007 6:25 PM PDT   0 recs

Sarunas
isnt really that bad of a player. Its just that Nelly doesnt play him. He is really effective on pick and rolls, and if he gets a chance he could knock a couple of 3's down.

*Remember the game he started in Minnesota? He got hella good numbers, when he got a chance to play. The Warriors should not look for a backup PG, when they are already paying Sarunas so much. They should look to improve the frontcourt players, instead back.

A matter of style
I really think that the problem with Sarunas is he is bad at everything that Nellie finds valuable at PG (speed, creating turnovers, leading the break) and the things he is good at (pick and roll, catch and shoot) Nellie doesn't really need from his PG for his style of play. Personally I think that overall he is a valuable player just not in this system.

I also wouldn't mind seeing more of Sarunas but I think they may still move him before next season. It makes it hard when your back-up PG needs to play a different style than the starter to be effective, this could cause problems for the rest of the guys to "stay in the flow" if you will. I think the best-case scenario is that we find a good home for him and get something valuable in return. If we can't get anything useful in return then I would be open to letting him get some more minutes. Maybe he will raise his trade value by midseason and we can move him then.

by olympicmike on Jun 30, 2007 10:38 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

id go for
Nocioni, Lewis, and Varejao. Varejao is a rebounder and good flopper :-), Nocioni is a really good shooter (more reliable than Barnes), and Lewis is an all star calibur player. Those 3 guys, i think the Warriors should pursue instead of trying to get rid of our future to get KG. I dont think it would be worth it for the W's to trade for KG unless its a real steal, that Mullin can make.

by ballin on Jun 30, 2007 6:28 PM PDT   0 recs

yeah well if garnett comes to the bay
we would easily become top playoff contenders because of the players we have compared to minnisota is much better. of course picking up a good free agent would also make us a better team

by GSwarrior on Jun 30, 2007 7:07 PM PDT   0 recs

I'd go
for Wallace, he'll fit in perfect.

by 49GIANTwarriors on Jun 30, 2007 9:01 PM PDT   0 recs

are we still wanting yi
lets get our team chemistry back starting now. no mre moves. we should sign mo williams. hes a pg right. back up.

by stevenro59 on Jun 30, 2007 9:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

please
no. i already like our team. plus how did you assume we add gerald wallace?

maybe do the trade if you switch POB with wright...which they probably wouldn't take.

second garnett wants to win a championship...aren't the bucks just like the celtics substituting redd for pierce. weren't both of those teams losing games on purpose to get a higher pick? i dont think it would work

by hyphybird on Jun 30, 2007 9:43 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

naw im cool

49GIANTwarriors:

dude, no one else has mentioned this.

you're the only person who has heard of this supposed GS-ORL-MIL trade 'rumor.'

hell no
i would never do that

MO WILLIAMS
we need a back up PG.

by stevenro59 on Jun 30, 2007 9:18 PM PDT   0 recs

Mo Williams
wants to be a starter and he was the starting pg for the bucks this past season. Plus, we don't have the kind of money that he wants to get paid.
The J-RICH show is on his way out...=(

by dajrichshow on Jun 30, 2007 9:33 PM PDT   0 recs

OKAY...
first off i have been wanting Gerald Wallace for the longest time so i am definately a supporter of going after him but... i believe that we cannot just sign him like that.. we are still over the cap, and im pretty sure we need to do a sign and trade for him.

by travisl212 on Jun 30, 2007 10:30 PM PDT   0 recs

correct
so it aint happening

by OptionZero on Jun 30, 2007 11:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Never say never
Geoff Lepper, in his latest State of the Warriors piece, at least floats the possiibility that we might sign a $9-10M type...
Forwards such as Rashard Lewis (Seattle), Gerald Wallace (Charlotte), Darko Milicic (Orlando) and Anderson Varejao (Cleveland) can now be signed by other teams and traded immediately to the Warriors for a relatively small cost.

http://origin.mercurynews.com/warriors/ci_6269797

I agree with Travis (and others) that if we  go after a free agent, it should be a versatile, athletic wing player rather than a "true" 4. So nix Varejao and Darko. And no on the offensive-minded Lewis, who basically duplicates Harrington. Wallace, with his insane athleticism, mad D and board-crashing, and innate ability to get to the rim, is just born to be a Nellieball 3. He has to realize that too. And he's only 24! If it came to it -- which it might well -- I would absolutely take Wallace over Monta.  Make it happen, Mully!

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 1, 2007 4:40 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

exactly
and he could even play a little 4.

by travisl212 on Jul 1, 2007 11:55 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

PJ Brown or Milicic
Brown is unrestricted and makes a little less than 9 mil a year.  What if we signed him for one year and thereby kept our funds intact for AB and Monta the following season.  Having a vetern PF to work with Wright could work out well.

Milicic is restricted but perhaps his 5 mil contract is manageable with some kind of sign and trade involving MP.

by commish on Jun 30, 2007 11:37 PM PDT   0 recs

brevin knight for backup pg
we need someone who doesnt want to chuck up threes.

by dso on Jul 1, 2007 12:26 AM PDT   0 recs

i like
the idea of bringing boykins back. nice backup for boomdizzle off the bench, can run and gun nelly style, he can score the ball and he shoots a wicked free throw percentage.

by ruderu22 on Jul 1, 2007 1:19 AM PDT   0 recs

What about Dee Brown
He seems to have a lot of potential and is quick as hell

by bfizzle on Jul 1, 2007 10:05 AM PDT   0 recs

Mo Williams
will not be a good signing for the following reasons: 1) he will be demanding a big contract 2) he will wanna start 3) he will most likely re-sign with Milwaukee since they need a PG 4) better off somewhere else...LOL.

by Phil T28 on Jul 1, 2007 3:02 PM PDT   0 recs

Bring in...
Brevin Night.  He is humble and would play his butt off for little $$$.  That way we would have BD, Monta, Fettucini, and Brevin Night.  Nice back court.
