Stromile Swift

Warriors get:

Stromile Swift

Memphis gets:

Pietrus(sign and trade)
Sarunas

All the mock drafts point to the Grizzlies taking another big man in the draft, most likely because Conley is expected to be taken by the Hawks.  This means that the Grizzlies will be stacked with 3/4 tweeners and 4s if they draft Horford or Brandon Wright.

I tried to think of a possible trade situation that would allow the Warriors to move up in the draft at 10 or 11, but couldn't think of any way that we would be able to swap picks with them.

If we made this aquisition, here are the benefits I see:

  1. We have a big men that can run the break and finish on ally-oops besides Biedrins.
  2. We assess our rebounding and weak side defending issue with Swift's athleticism.
  3. We can then draft a swingman or BPA rather than getting a big guy.
Swift has never lived up to the expectations because he was a #2 overall pick, but I think he has potential to fit in our system just by solely dunking on put backs and alley oops.  He also could greatly improve our defense.

It's an interesting trade proposal...
only thing wrong with it is the salaries involved. Pietrus is probably looking for a multi-year decent contract... and Stro is set to make around $6 mil next season.  If a sign and trade were to happen... it would either have to be straight up or include other players in order to include Cabbages (who's set to make $4 mil next season).  I agree that we should give Stro a chance... especially since he is a fairly decent defender who can finish alley's.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

hmmm
Resigned Piety (3 yr. 24 mil) + our #46 pick (the second 2nd rounder) for Stro ??

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

If Pietrus signs an $8 mil/year contract...
..my head will explode. There's no way he's worth more than $5 mil. But anyhow, your logic still works, I'd like to see that trade. It sure seems like we should be able to get Stromile for nickels, especially because of the likelihood that Memphis drafts a young PF like B Wright or our boy Yi.

dubs could use
a rebounder who blocks shots, plays d, and has a midrange j. But does he really do all those things?

They can fit him into the salary, but only if Foyle is jettisoned for an expiring contract.  Would POB do it?  and/or a future 1st?

I would not trade our second rounder this year.  Cabbages and Pietrus for Swift is difficult to turn down.

i'd really like to see what Swift does
under Nelson's instruction and coaching.  If it doesn't work out, they can trade him as an expiring contract.  Adding Swift would also mean Barnes is gone:

Add Kelena, a backup PG (sarunas or someone else), Powell, 3 rookies, and whoever else (Foyle, POB if they aren't moved) and you have your roster.

The warriors need to keep the core of this team together and I'm not sold on Barnes.  Swift can definitely run and provide a shotblocking presence when Biedrins exits.  Pairing him with Harrington or Biedrins means you always have athleticism.

I think its an experiment worth doing.

just wanted to add
that the deal would actually have to be Foyle + POB/future #1 for Swift.

The dubs cannot afford to add a contract next year without getting rid of Foyle.  They need to dump contracts, not add them.  Memphis fans think Swift is untradeable so it could get done without Pietrus.

Any move that is made will be with Monta and Biedrins' future in mind first and foremost.

Salary
Stro for multiple years would be bad because we need to resign ellis and biedrins after next year.

sto
is a beat at the PF. Lets say hes like a Tyrus Thomas! Stromile is a perfect fit and since he was the number 2 pick you cant go wrong! Who knows, maybe he will become a star?

by ballin on Jun 4, 2007 9:01 AM PDT reply actions

let's see here

since he was the number 2 pick you cant go wrong!

Then again, this was the weakest draft in recent years imo. I mean here's your top ten pick of that draft:

1 Kenyon Martin
2 Stromile Swift
3 Darius Miles
4 Marcus Fizer
5 Mike Miller
6 DerMarr Johnson
7 Chris Mihm
8 Jamal Crawford
9 Joel Przybilla
10 Keyon Dooling

Not exactly 1992. Even if an NBA team has these 10 guys on its roster, it would be average at best!

DAMN!
Stop being so specific! Nothing better to do than find the draft of that year??? He is a good player! What are you trying to say with your comment?? Stromile just needs to find the right enviornment and GS is it!

He's had opportunities
He's had three or four opportunities with different teams/coaches to blossom but has yet to do so. What makes you think he'll be so good in a Warrior uniform? He played the uptempo style with Barrone in Memphis to finish last season and still was a waste.

by pree on Jun 5, 2007 2:07 AM PDT up reply actions

The point is
We would give up two players we don't really want anymore, and get one that would benefit us more than drafting a big man at #18.  Trade for Swift and he has the potential of being the weak side help we need, and the alley-oop man like Amare.  I know he's no where near an all-star, but he's definately a defensive upgrade, and he'll allow us to get a Crittendon or Fernandez at #18 rather than a big like Williams, Smith, or Splitter, who are all somewhat risks under Nellie's short leashes.

good player?
What exactly makes you think he's a good player?  He's never played particularly well for very long.  He's not terrible, but his production for a 4/5 type isn't particularly noteworthy and tends towards a bit under average.

relax junior
All I'm saying is your point of him being a #2 pick of the 2000 draft was pretty much, well, pointless. If he was the 2nd pick in another draft class, then that's a different story.

Memphis needs guards
That's why I said Sarunas and Pietrus because they don't need another big man like Foyle or POB.  They have plenty of players that already play the 4 and 5, I doubt they would want to swap big for big...especially one like Foyle who's overpaid and signed for multiple years.

Memphis has a lot of cap room next year, so they could take on more money than they give away, plus they will most likely sign Chauncey Billups if they give him the money.  I really don't think Memphis would even consider taking anyone from our team but a guard.

im not sure
what to expect from that guy. he has underachieved his entire career. I'm sure he is not the answer. If we had a legit 4,5 then i'd say go after him as a super sub or something.

Stromile never...
The Dude never lived up in NBA 2k series on my XBOX when he was w/ the Rockets lol... I don't know... It would be interesting to see him play under Nellie's style...  Come to think of it... signing Stromile is like signing Ronnie Devoe of Bel Biv Devoe to our team... and Now You Know! Poison!

I HATE STRO
Unmotivated? Check.
Underachiever? Check.
Overrated? Check.
Overpaid? Check.

Why would anyone want him?

Even in the uptempo game Barrone ran after Fratello got fired, Swift still struggled. What makes anyone think he'll be okay in Nellie's system if he couldn't hang in Barrone's?

by pree on Jun 4, 2007 8:54 PM PDT reply actions

Below average players.
A team depending on Swift for much production isn't going to do much.  Teams that have depended on Swift haven't done much.  He's a below average 4 who, if you keep him down to 20 minutes a game and have other productive players at his position, won't get in the way of winning, but he won't do much to get the wagon moving either.

by jae on Jun 4, 2007 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

safe to say..
he's a bust? that whole draft seemed like a bust, but supposedly Marcus Fizer is making quite a comeback, so maybe there is still hope for that draft....
