"Nelson declares Wright as no help for the year." Source?

I'm sorry to have to make a diary of this but in this thread -- http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2007/7/10/32537/7076-- it was said that we should go for a big man because Nelson had already declared Wright to be of no help for the year.

With Nellie declaring that Wright isn't ready to contribute this season, I'm pretty sure the Dubs will have to add another big man.

So i asked twice on the thread for the source and have not yet been provided with one. I'm sorry that i have to keep asking but this statement is huge to me, and i need to see where it came from. For me, if this was truly said by Don Nelson, then it shows a lack of foresight by the front office to trade JRich, a quantifable known, for a player who we thought would have some sort of potential for the following year. After all, Nelson will at most coach the next two years. Why would he trade for a player that would provide him no help whatsoever this year?

Pree, all your abilities as a writer aside, all your history as a Warrior commentator aside, where is the source?

I'm NO pree
but...here is one place that Nellie is quoted..

http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_22644.shtml

And I seem to remember also in Vegas (pre-game interview)

http://www.nba.com/media/warriors/SummerLeague07_Nelson_070907.mp3

Nelson always makes it tough on the young guys..his way..

hey thanks a lot
this diary really wasn't meant to be an attack on pree but an affirmation of the statement. things make a lot more sense now.

Nellie's right of passage..
for young guys. Remember he even afforded this same "challenge" to JRICH. The quote escapes me...something to the effect that he had heard JRICH was an "All Star," but he hadn't seen it yet (JRICH was hurt). JRICH came back with a vengeance. A "Show me what you got"...Prove it to me motivator.

So don't fret...grab a frosty out of the garage fridge and watch Sports Center.

Sorry
I didn't see the question - next time email me or something if you need clarification on a source or something like that. But yea .. the source was Nellie.

At least I was proved to not be a BSPN maker-upper :)

quick follow up though
was this from an interview you conducted or was it from another site?

by dso on Jul 11, 2007 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Conducted by my colleague
He's actually sort of like my boss titlewise.

Of course
knowing Nellie, this could mean that Wright is actually expected to make the all-rookie team.  In the public eye, no one uses reverse psychology like the Don does.

Thats hella
dumb. How can Nelson say that the #8 pick is no use for the season and "say" the #18 pick is ready. Brandan Wright deserves as much of a shot to play as Marco Belinelli.

I dont understand why Nelson doesnt like the big men the W's draft. What's the point of drafting big men like POB and Wright if youre not going to play them?

Mind games?
You can't rule out a Nellie mind game.

or they know
more about that hip than they told us ...

with Nelson, more likely mind games though

Well
Beli is 21 and has been playing professional ball in Europe for several years. Wright is a 19-y.o college sophomore who's still growing into his body. Also, pivot skills generally take longer to develop than wing skills. It doesn't take a hoops genius to see that Beli's going to get much heavier minutes, in more important situations, than Brandan.

That said, yeah, take everything that comes out of Mulson's mouth with a huge grain of salt...

Why would anyone take Nellie seriously...
The man is a genious... Do we so soon forget the first round of the playoffs and the  "We are a bunch of schmoes" "We are just happy to be here" "We have a better shot of getting hit by lightning then beating the mavs"

Dont worry all. Nellie is a conman.

Oh yeah he also signed a three year contract and he didnt mean that either. :)

Conman is strong haha
But don't forget the "I failed this team since we don't look like we're going to make the playoffs" speech. Homeboy knows himself some PSYCH101

Don't forget
Predicting 20 and 10 from Murphy, saying Dunleavy is a natural power forward, (saying that POB has talent), Nelson's word isn't always to be trusted at face value.  I have no idea if he meant any of those things when he said them or not. I hope he's BSing about Wright as a coverup for, well I'm not sure why you'd say that unless Wright needs the motivation, but I'm working on the assumption that Nelson knows much, much more about basketball than I do so I'll trust his judgment here.

I wish...
i wish Wright were getting some summer league action so we could at least get a glimpse of what he can do.  I get the feeling though that Nellie isn't bluffing on this one.  Wright's body alone makes me question his NBA-readiness.  I think he's one of those cats that was drafted on potential.

DARN
I wanted to buy his Jersey too so I can tell Everyone "He's The "WRIGHT" One Baby! Uh-Huh!"

Lets hope that
Wright is working out currently as we type I really don't think you need your hip to work out or at least practice. By the way does anyone know how Wright got injured in the first place? He needs to be like Spike and Do the Wright Thing.

by protac6 on Jul 11, 2007 10:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

theres only
a couple explanations.  one we are getting kg.  two, nellie just wants to motivate wright or three, he just thinks he is not quite ready to dominate, but he will get some minutes to show what he can do.

by travisl212 on Jul 11, 2007 11:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

hey hows about this
nellie doing the youngbuck a huge favor, given the pressure the young man faces from the dub fans and the bay area media becuase he has taken the place of the BELOVED j-rich. nelson comes out and says don't expect anything from him this year he just isn't ready, but check out the italian stallion hugh isn't he great!!!! thus realing all pressure from young b.wright and allowing him to develope at a much more comfortable pace and not pressing to live up to j-riches huge shoes. leaving us to be dazzled by marco while b quietly gets his 10-15 minutes a game and chips in with 6 or 7 boards and 8 to 10 points and steadily develops into the beast we all hopes he becomes!!!! that nellie, sheer genius!!!!

by ruderu22 on Jul 12, 2007 12:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know...
...if i were Wright i think that i would feel even more pressure because Belinelli is doing so well... with Wright being the 8th pick and Belinelli being the 18th.  I'm sure Wright understands that Marco has been a 5-year pro already and that he's been expected to be NBA-ready while Wright has maturing to do both physically and in terms of understanding the NBA level.  But the ravings about Belinelli have got to have Wright thinking "Well i'm the higher pick, i'm expected to be the stud around here."

It's the kind of pressure though that can be a big motivating factor.  The trick is for Wright to progress at his own pace and learn and work hard.

I hope its not true
I have been ripped for liking JRich and throwing out stats that state that he was good and that B. Wright's in college were slightly better than average.  I've tried to verbalize it as well, but yet again I get ripped.  All in all, its been a little disapointing to hear more than some of the fans here not give two squirts about a player like JRich, because either

1.JRich sucked and you never really liked him
2.You're happy because its all a plan to get KG
3.Yall think B. Wright is a God

Well, I really really hope that B.Wright is okay and this is all Jr. High hallway gossip and we can move on.  If not and B. Wright is a bust, all I have been bitching about for the past two weeks would have been for a good reason.  Plain and simple, just because you can, doesn't mean you should in regards to dumping your 2nd round pick AND your 2nd best player for the 8th pick in the draft; sorry it still makes me laugh we did that and I thought I was over it till I heard this gossip.  Please be okay B. Wright, please say we didn't dump JRich all for not...

Amen
I'm with you. Unless it was a trade that leads to getting KG or some other stud it was probably a step back for next season on the basketball court for the Dubs. On face value right now it looks really odd given Nellie's 1-2 year plan with the Warriors.

JR was playing some of the best basketball of his NBA career down the stretch in that miraculous dash to clinch a playoff birth. I thought he was primed for a huge comeback season in 2k7-2k8 with the Warriors. You know from my many pieces about the trade that I'm not feeling the trade at all in the immediate future.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jul 12, 2007 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...
The success of the trade hinges on Wright's play + development or the acquisition of KG.
