Poll-Just for Fun: How old are you?

Someone (update: eddie925 sorry bro) wrote in another diary that most of the people who post in here are in high school so I was thinking it would be fun to know the age groups that actually visit this site. I think it is really interesting that many of us spend so much time on this site and have no idea who the people are we are talking to (one of the negatives of technologies growing influence). I am 21 and it came as a shock that so many of you would be younger than me. I just assumed many of you were older then me.......

Anyways I thought it would be interesting to know the general ages of the posters....So how old are you? ALSO POST YOUR AGE WITH YOUR NAME (not real name) AND WHERE YOUR FROM if you like (no addresses of course)

Insulted?
There are two stages to a man's life, first stage is young and dumb followed by the second which is ancient.  One becomes ancient the day one realizes that they were once young and dumb.  One also can be ancient at the age of 20 years, while another can still young and dumb at the age of 60 years.

BTW, only the Ancient Ones were witness to the last Warrior Championship, eat your hearts young 'ums.

I ain't saying, but...
...I saw Willis Reed make his first and only shots against the Lakers in the 7th game of the championship in the Garden. Red Holzman, Clyde, Bill, Dave, Dick, and the Captain, that was a team. Reed had the heart of a lion, and he was never the biggest center. He came on the court just before the game and the place went wild. He won the tip-off against Wilt and scored. Crazier. Then he hit a 20 footer and the place went even more crazy. Those were his last points. The Lakers never recovered.
I live here and have been a Warrior fan since Mullie arrived. He grew up half a mile from where I lived as a teen in Brooklyn.

Since CWebb finished his sophomore year at Michigan and was dratfed after that...and he got traded to the Ws, the Ws made it to the playoffs his rookie year...so last season was actually your second playoff experience.

Or were you talking about his 2nd season in the NBA with the Bullets?

I didn't realize
we had so many young Dubs converts. That's awesome. But I can't help being skeptical that it's not just the Warriors' recent successes that have people singing their tune. I remember how in the late 90s/early 00s so many people became diehard Kings fans overnight--even people who used to be Warrior fans...

Being a true Warrior fan and having a healthy hatred for anything Chris Webber, I never jumped on THAT bandwagon--I was so stoked when Horry hit that ridiculous buzzer beater in Game 6 of the Lakers/Kings Western Finals. I hate the Lakers, too, but my loyalties run considerably deeper than all that...

I am 29 years old, born and raised in SF, and I have never, ever, rooted for the Kings. Nonetheless, I think it's cool to have all these young(er) bucks bringing up the GSoM community, and look forward to future posts...

"But I can't help being skeptical that it's not just the Warriors' recent successes that have people singing their tune."

Isn't that how sports works for the people who aren't into sports?  Its good for the warriors in some ways, but it has negative impact on the actual fans who have to endure the moaning.

It's like a teenager getting his g/f pregnant, everything was all good when it was just sex.  So when the warriors have a bad game or some player has a bad night, the newbie fans will come on here moaning about something.  All the older fans can do is shake their heads and think about how bad it could or used to be.

Age Rules
Hey Atma. I understand where you're coming from when talking about an age rule. However, the people who we now know would be under the age limit have made many valuable comments in the past. There are lots of young Warriors fans who should be able to give their opinions just like the older ones. As long as these fans don't give out personal information, I think they'll be safe in this community.

GSoM has always been great for a whole family of Warriors fans, as it says in the About GSoM section. I think that even younger people in these families should be able to post.

Finally, I have to mention that Zorgon would have been under the limit not too long ago. Could you imagine GSoM without Zorgon?

If you want to make an age limit, I completely understand, I just wanted to give my opinion.

GOOD LUCK, JRICH. WE MISS YOU, MAN.

Family Show
You're absolutely right this is a family show. That means that it should always be clean and safe here. That doesn't necessarily translate into allowing 14 year old's post here. A ton of newspapers and online forums require people to be a certain age- I'm not sure if there are legal reasons behind it.

And yes I can imagine GSoM without Zorgon (no offense to the man). No one community member is bigger than the entire community.

Solution doesn't address the "Problem".
Part 1 of the "Problem": People are posting too many pointless, poorly thought-out, redundant or semi-trollish diaries.

Part 2: People making comments that are personal attacks as opposed to substantive agreements, disagreements or discussions about ideas.

I think dealing with the "Problem" directly rather than an outlying coincidental factor, like age, will yield better results without making age a constant issue here.

I also agree with the other two coments:

  • It's unenforceable.
  • Zorgon man!!!
Oh, and I fall in the 25-31 bracket, so I have no personal stake one way or another.

by bloodsweatndonuts on Jul 15, 2007 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with BS&D
Really, age has very little to do with it. If there had been a GSoM in 1984, I'm pretty sure the posts of the 16-yo Sleepy Freud would be just as smart and mature -- or if you prefer, just as stupid and immature -- as they are today. One thing you learn as you age: people don't change.

In other words, it's just as naive to think 49erGiantWarrior is magically going to "grow up" into JAE as it is to think Foyle can learn point guard skills and be the next Magic.

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 15, 2007 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think age has a ton to do with it
Straight up we have a few rotten apples that are just displaying their immaturity. I can't really blame them if they're under 18.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jul 16, 2007 8:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Please Atma... No
I have been posting here for a long time, I think even for a while when I was 14. I think I speak for all of the young GSOMers here that we can make mature posts most of the time, and we don't want this site to become "Adults only" if it truely were to become Adults only, then would it really stay "A Family Site"?

I don't really fit in any of the other message boards/blogs, as I just get flamed for my crazy opinions. If you do instutute this age rule, you would lose a signifcant part of your fanbase, and much of the culture here at GSoM.

If you refute me from posting diaries, for 2 years, I don't think they would be any better or worse then they are now. Maybe better with experience, but certianly not any more or less stupid or immature.

There is a perfectly good number of 40 year old babies who are just as bad as handling a loss or flaming another person as a 12 year old can.

My Solution: Have the blog admin approve each diary. It's a lot better than going in and saying, "Don't make diaries for a month, k?" Better yet, the "Recommended Diaries" section, although yes, yes I know it's on the way.

Comments are comments, and there will always be bad eggs, and there's no way to stop it other than reading each and every one. We just have to trust the community to ignore the haters.

In closing, could you imagine GSoM without my smiling face? :D

I'll go along
With that movement. Zorg's off-the-mark a lot of the time, but he's smart (by GSoM standards) and probably the best-natured poster on the site. We definitely need that to balance out curmudgeons like me.

As for rules for diaries: regardless of age, it's increasingly clear that posters like 49ergiantdoofus and goldenstatedumbass4life are too in love with the sight of their own user name to be deterred by any "rules." Atma, if you care about the quality of the diary section (and you do seem to) I think you really need to approach it differently: not "who shouldn't be allowed to post diaries?", but "who should be?" I wouldn't allow anyone to open a new diary till they've proven themselves worthy by making at least a few intelligent comments. Lock out the whole diary section. dole out passwords to 50-100 "preferred diarists" (I'm sure you could easily make that list) and take it from there.

GSoM standards
Well this is what upsets me the most. I believe the posts that my boys and I write for the front page are intelligent and well thought out. Why does that bring in so much trash on the diaries and comments? It's frustrating.

Interesting case
Well Zorgon I'd contend that your situation isn't a perfect case at all. For the most part I think you are a very good writer and usually put a lot of thought into your diaries. However, you're also a good example of why an age rule might be necessary. You have more than 3 very awful strikes on your record (maybe more) that which demonstrate to me why it's unfair to the 18+ crowd to allow the under 18 crowd to post.
  1. After the trade with the Pacers you literally threw a temper tantrum and started swearing at other people on this board. We had to delete many of your posts and even received several emails from people complaining about your words ruining the community. You even went so far to make a big deal that you were leaving the community after the trade because you despised the players coming in and loved the players going out. You think we enjoy having to deal with all of that? We were busy enough trying to pump out material about the trade and we had to deal with that nonsense.
  2. You inserted yourself into an discussion between GSDubbz and myself. Instead of making a point or adding to the discussion with some well thought out arguments, you did the unthinkable and went to my personal site (which has no connection to GSoM whatsoever) dug up a picture of me and defaced it. The point isn't that you made a joke about me which I really don't care, but that instead of responding to my points you took the wildly immature route of responding like a 5 year to an argument. As I said back then, if you had done that to any other community member on this site, you would have been banned. That's just not safe behavior.
  3. After that you still had the nerve to throw a week long full of histrionics saying how you were leaving GSoM and putting up a ton of pointless diaries. Then you wrote how you were coming back and said it was all a joke. Come on man. That was utter trash and a waste of the diaries. You arrogantly acted like you were bigger than the community. I have never seen anyone else do something like that with the diaries. It was just ridiculously silly and a waste of everyone's time.
Sorry, but the community could live without all of those. I'm not saying that Zorgon's not welcome here, but his history here doesn't exactly tip the scale in favor of not having an age rule for posting on GSoM. I'm not saying that Zorgon's a bad guy whatsoever, but I do believe that if he was older he wouldn't have done those dumb things.

Again, I'm not saying that someone over 18 isn't capable of making those same mistakes, but the "oh he's just an immature kid" argument can't be used for that crowd. Neither should that argument be allowed for the under 18 kids. If you post here, I don't think you have to be 18 (I just threw out the idea), but you do need to act mature and wiser than your years.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jul 16, 2007 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Take this with a grain of salt atma, but I didn't
make this diary to show that people that are young shouldn't be here I made it so that the "community" you and many of us are so fond of would know eachother better. You have unfortunatly turned it into something that is not "Just for fun" as the title suggests.

I made this to improve the community and so that people could get to know eachother better, not it is just other people getting scared as to whether or not they can stay here. I guess you kind of highjacked the "Just for Fun" part of the diary.

I really don't know what to say...
except that I hope you focus on the good in me, and not the bad in me when you see my username.

I would like to report to you that I don't associate with GSDubz anymore, and that he really is not a nice person.

Now that I really look over the information, I guess there should be an age limit. All of the under 16 or 18 posters are mostly lesser-known or slight annoyances. So, by all means, if you have to, do it. It may be for my own good.

I will say this: although it does put an unessessary toll on your very busy lives, I have learned a lot from GSoM. I've learned to deal with things like trades that don't go my way or butting into other peoples business. I've learned to just step off, relax for a pit and the pent-up rage will go away. I'm not trying to say that this should be a "life-lesson center" but I would have NOT had the same experience at Warriors World or some other places. And these experiences will help me out very very much in later life, and I probobly would have learned them the very very hard way.

I appreciate you keeping me on the site, and understanding my mistakes.

Nevertheless, there is one quote that I must
refute:

And yes I can imagine GSoM without Zorgon

I think you can imagine it, but I think that you know deep down in your heart that I only wish to positively contribute to this community, and with me along, the ride has been a lot more fun.

Or....at least I hope so.

I hope it didn't come across the wrong way
I don't have any ill-will towards you whatsoever. In fact I typically really enjoy your diaries and I'm glad you're part of this community. I still remember that great essay you wrote for last year's contest which was one of my favorites (alas, I'm only 1 of 5 judges!):
http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2006/10/3/113810/510

You are a very strong writer and you've got a bright future. I hope and expect you're college bound. (Pick a UC!)

My larger point is that no single community member is bigger than everyone else. My other main point is that your mistakes were simply just that- immature mistakes made by a good kid. Should they be happening here to the detriment of the older GSoMers? I'm not so sure, but hey- you've learned and moved on. I'm really glad to see that.

I would like to report to you that I don't associate with GSDubz anymore, and that he really is not a nice person.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that man. Again, that's another thing that really worries me about having younger folk posting on GSoM. I mean I love ya'll energy and I love young folks (haha, I'm still young in most circles), but it does worry me when under 18 kids and older people in this community get into flame wars and fights with each other either here on GSoM or offline because they met here. It honestly makes me nervous about some adult getting out of hand and being extremely mean to a kid who's just growing up. I believe GSDubbz is 21+ and you're only 16 or so, so conflicts like that worry me both ways.

Stay up man! You're a big part of this community. (Watch your manners though- you can be replaced if you step out of line- haha, just kidding.)

Again, like always we're not going to make a change like an age limit without getting all your feedback or at least taking into consideration all your thoughts after we make a big change and seeing if we have to revert to where we were before. That's all this was about.

Apologies to dallaswarrior for killing the fun in his diary. I had no idea it would blow up like this, but I do want to thank everyone for the very civil discussion.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jul 16, 2007 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The essay was better
full fledged, but, alas, it was hundreds of words too long.

Anyway, GSDubz wasn't really a bad person, we just had a tremendous personality clash. We both liked the Warriors, we both liked NBA 2K7, and we enjoyed each others posts. Then we started talking on AIM and it started getting apparent that we disagreed with each other on a lot of issues. On top of that, he wanted to "force" those issues on me like he was a teacher. There was also the problem of running the 2K7 league, which we also disagreed fundamentally on. So we don't talk to each other anymore.

So in other words, it's nothing like "him being extremely mean" to me.

I do believe Tony (tadams) and him talk in real life, and even have went to a Warriors game together, so good has come out of this site.

Should they be happening here to the detriment of the older GSoMers? I'm not so sure, but hey- you've learned and moved on. I'm really glad to see that.

It's very, very hard to make that call. You could lose a lot of good members by doing this, but you could also make a lot of bad eggs go away. I just hope the good overflows the bad.

My larger point is that no single community member is bigger than everyone else.

Truth is, I am very, very arrogant in real life, and it's kind of hard to shy away from this online. I may seem too self-important sometimes, but at heart, I am not that evil.

And thanks for the encouragement. It's nice to know I'm still wanted around.

Oh, and sorry DallasWarrior. ON TOP of snubbing you during the playoffs, now I've ruined your diary! What next? Make you slip on a Banana Peel? Jeez.

Sorry guys
I just want to mention that I'm sorry about my comment...
Can you imagine GSoM without Zorgon?

...turned into a big deal. I just wanted to lighten up my serious age limit comment with a little joke. I understand that no person is bigger than the community.

I'm glad to see you guys have worked things out.

GOOD LUCK, JRICH. WE MISS YOU, MAN.

hmm, that's a tough one
me: 29 years old, Skyline High c/o '95.

definitely lots of young bucks here, but that's who drives a lot of the sports mania.  i would not recommend censoring the younger folks' diaries, but i guess some sort of formatting change might be in order: have diaries sorted by categories or popularity or recommendations.

btw, this is pretty valuable data on the community.  i bet advertisers are loving it...

LMOA at the age restriction...kinda reminds me of the age limit for the NBA Draft. Ridiculous...by the  way, people could just lie about their age. C'mon now.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

by OaktownFunk on Jul 15, 2007 9:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Abusrd analogy
The age limit for the NBA Draft is about banning mostly black adults from employment that they are qualified for. A proposed age limit for posting on GSoM (which probably won't happen- I just wanted to get people's opinions) is about preventing under 16 or 18 kids from "acting their age" and ruining the community experience for many.

there's a bunch of teenies here. I lived everywhere pretty much but just move back to the bay area (Fremont) from Lathrop thankfully!

My first Warriors experience came with World B Free going head-to-head with Gus Williams of the Sonics in 1981.

I wish, but unfortunately no. We can check what number you were to sign up though. You were GSoM community member #206. I think we're up to over 1800 registered accounts, so you're a vet!

by Atma Brother ONE on Jul 16, 2007 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree Atma,
the age limit isn't the best thing for the community, I have a little cousin who I got hooked on GSoM and he has alot of great ideas and follows the site religiously, thought I don't think he posts to often. Really, it would probably be best if we could just have a heavier hammer for the peopel(young or old) who just become an annoyance to everyone else. I part time ban maybe? Short term? Might just get everyone to really start considering what they write instead of just blurting out the nonsense that usually makes sense only in their own little heads?

I should be clear though
I was just tossing out the idea to get some opinions from the community. Regardless, folks of all ages are always welcome to be readers. I was just seeing whether people liked the idea of an age limit for posters.

Whoa? 206
Not bad at all...haha...

I rarely have any issues w/ the diaries on here, but I do see that some people reiterate the same thing over and over and over, which can get annoying. But with over 1800 members strong now, it'd be difficult to stop the mindless ramblings regardless of age. Don't you think?

hail from South City...livin/tworkin in Dallas and laughing, daily, at mavericks fans.

i'm all for an age limit.  But i'm conflicted in that i'd also like to join in the Keep Zorgon movement.  so many tough decisions.  i'd be interested in how many new posters there have been since the 'offs.  maybe choose a point in time and make all new posters to go thru a one year lurk period.  now i'm just running my mouth.

solution:  give me the power to ban anyone and everyone, and i'll run this place on fear.

From oakland.  Just started posting, but I have been frequenting the site for a while.  Please don't institute an age limit.  Although teenagers are capable of being really stupid and immature, so are adults sometimes, and it is only good for the site in the future to encourage younger posters.  I know Option Zero will do a good job.
