Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Off-topic: SJ Sabercats

Here I was waiting for the baseball season to end...waiting for Niners football to begin...followed by the highlight of the year - the start of the GS Warriors' 2007-2008 season. The Niners have a promising season ahead of them. With nice FA signings and a good draft, they are poised to return to the playoffs and make some noise.

And depending on what else the Dubs do this summer, October will be a time to tune in to KNBR 680, FSN Bay Area, and of course, GSoM.

But after decades of ignoring the Arena Football League, I gave it a shot to watch more than 3 plays in a game - We watched the Sabercats play against the defending champs, the Chicago Rush, in the American Conference Championship game at HP Pavilion. And boy was it a pleasant surprise! I actually enjoyed the game, the atmosphere, and the validity of a true sport. I was expecting a low-buget event but they really took the time to make everything genuine and exciting.

I am a traditionalist an all but yesteray's experience may have turned me into a closer follower of the AFL and the 'Cats. What was the result of off-season boredom may have led to actual interest in the sport and the team. As a matter of fact, I spent hours today just browsing the 'Cats' website as well as AFL's.

If you're like me - ignoring the league or the 'Cats for years and have never seen a game, give it a shot! You may enjoy it. I know I did!

BTW, they are playing in their 3rd ArenaBowl championship game in like 6 years. The game is on 7/28 at 12pm in New Orleans. It'll be televised on ABC if anyone cares to watch.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Sabercats Blog
Anyone know of any good ones?

Also, I was just telling Fantasy Junkie that I bet the AFL is much more enjoyable style to PLAY than playing with the NFL rules. Fun and gun!

I Gotta say...
Yea man, from 2002-2005 yours truly was a designer for The SJ Sabercats, I did all of the newspaper ads and a couple of Billboards... good stuff! Fun stuff actually, the company knows how 2 take care of their players and graphic designers! (LOL)

I went 2 their first Arena Bowl apperance, and pretty much all their games and its pretty intense... 50 yards of over the top violence and the scoring was crazy, I think I went 2 a number of games that were near the 100 point scoring mark... I won't lie, I went a lotta times for the Saber Kittens- I had end zone seats and I couldn't help lookin at the Tot's... SOme of those girls were Warrior Girls too! LOL Yea, If u haven't experienced Arena Football... it's good times! (affordable too! They should move to Oracle LOL! I won't start!)

actually in the early 90s
I played amateur football in the south Bay and a teammate of mine told me about the 'Cats try-outs. He gave me the phone # to call. So I called that number and when the guy picked up, I got so scared and asked for a random name (I believe I asked for Gary or some name like that) and then I quickly said "oops sorry, wrong number". I really wanted to try out so bad but my fear of not knowing what to expect took over. Oh well.

Sabercats
To all Sabercats fans: Do you remember Travis Seaton? He made his AFL debut in 2002.

He was one of my teachers when I was in fifth grade. Mr. C (as he told us to call him) was one of the coolest people I've ever met. I believe he's on the Stockton Lightning now.

Sabercat Game
My buddy actually called me up on Friday night and invited me to the game.  I had nothing better going on so I went.  It was a pretty-exciting game with lots of scoring so that was good.  And it was cool to be able to see football players talk smack and maybe hit an opponent a couple seconds late without getting charged with a personal foul.  Also there were some fans who were just fanatical and dressed up with the face paint and all.  That part just seemed comical though.  I mean this is the AFL!  I can see if we were in Nebraska and there were no other pro sports than going to an AFL game would be something to get geeked about.  But hey, whatever floats their boat.  I could have done with the constant music blaring during the entire game but I understand thats the crowd they are going for.

Cats
James Roe is actually really close to me. He is there #1 reciever, and comes into my Sprint store atleast once a month to make a payment on his cell. Being the manager, he always hooks me up with tickets, and I was actually able to go to the first playoff game last week, and saw the Cats KILL the Crush.

Arena football is great! Like most people, I never gave it a chance until I actually went to one. They do fireworks and all that, and make it sort of exciting.

I attended...
My first Sabercats game this year and wasn't all that impressed. When I first saw the field, I thought it was going to be really cool, but it was just all offense. The cats won by like 30 and I left in the 3 quarter because I was so bored. Every play seemed to be a hail mary into the endzone. In my opinion, if the AFL is gonna give the WR a running start, then the D should have an extra man. A saftey would be perfect. Make the WR's think twice before running into the endzone every time. Plus it would add more hard hits and running game. Two things I believe would make it a much more exiting and a less one-dimensional sport. To sum it up, it lacked the intensity that other sports have. It's a good idea, they just need to make it a little more exciting and less offensive minded. BTW. I love the idea of barriers around the field. I can only imagine how many devistating hits would happen if the D tightened down.
