James Posey to the Warriors?

it seems that mullin had a "good meeting" with posey on friday in vegas.

Warriors meet with Posey: Vice president Chris Mullin and special assistant Mitch Richmond had a "good meeting" with free-agent forward James Posey in Las Vegas on Friday, according to Mark Bartelstein, Posey's agent. Bartelstein said the Warriors were among several teams, including Dallas and Washington, to express interest in his client and that talks were ongoing.

a "good meeting" probably means that something is holding Posey back into coming to the bay. im thinking they're trying to work out a s/t Pietrus for Posey, and resign barnes with the MLE.

i have a question about any trade
involving sending pietrus to another team and getting a swingman back in return... why would the other team do it?  if essentially we are getting the better player at basically the same position.

miami
probably is trying to get younger by taking pietrus. Posey is 30, j-will is 32, shaq is 35, eddie jones is 36, gary payton, alonzo. So it would make sense if they wanted pietrus in exchange for posey. Meanwhile, we wouldn't mind adding veteran presence to the roster.

i hope we get posey or anybody. It seems like every team is getting somebody except the Warriors.

Pietrus
is a great player, sometimes.  He makes idiodic mistakes.  He has a natural athleticism that makes him a factor.  He can shoot.  He can jump.  But just when you think "damn, Pietrus is tight!" he commits three dumbass fouls in a row and gets two traveling violations.  Just as Nelly Beleives that other players will fit better in his system than their current team, other teams see potential in the goofy Frenchy.

To be honest, if noone signs Pietrus and we can get him cheap, do it.  He was a major factor in more than a few of the games this season, including a couple in the playoffs.  Maybe he can get better, but I doubt it.  If he can't learn from one of the best coaches in NBA history, then maybe another player can.

He was a major factor
"in more than a few of the games this season, including a couple in the playoffs"

Yeah, He does what he does best pretty well, dogging the perimeter, corner threes, and ocassional backdoor slams. I'm more comfortable with Mikey than Posey (what kinda name is that for a baller anyway?) I'm hoping the Warriors and Pietrus can agree on a fair number that both can live with so we can keep him.

good news
If they get Posey for cheap.

Thought: is this real interest, or phantom interest to use as leverage against Barnes?

Either way, we don't need BOTH of them

Look at the depth chart:

PG: Baron, Sarunas
SG: Ellis, Belinelli, Buike
SF: Jackson
PF: Harrington, Wright, Powell, Lasme
C: Biedrins, Foyle, POB, Kosta

That's 14 guys (15 is the limit).
SF is a glaring spot, but it's really one spot.

I figure POB, Kosta, Lasme get sent down to D-league. That, or buyout Foyle for a roster spot

erd
Kosta and POB don't see the light of a NBA lit court this year. No way, no how. Lasme, I don't know. Depends on how he does at camp, I suppose. Either way I'll take Posey and Barnes.

Mulling a deal with Warriors?
Might want to drop Sarunas Jasikevicius off your list??

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2007/07/15/celtics_in_need_of_assistance/?p age=4

First, a quick disclaimer: Wander around Cox Pavilion at the Las Vegas Summer League long enough and you'll see Danny Ainge chatting up just about every NBA general manager. But an interesting pairing that might mean something: Ainge and Golden State Warriors executive VP of basketball operations Chris Mullin standing in a corner partially obscured by the stands. Could Ainge and Mullin have been talking about Warriors guard Sarunas Jasikevicius? Almost as soon as Jasikevicius arrived in a mid-January trade with Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, and Josh Powell, the Warriors have been hoping to find a new home for the Lithuanian, who starred with Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv before joining the NBA. Jasikevicius was coveted by none other than Larry Bird, which could peak the interest of Ainge as he looks for a veteran point guard.

your right
i was thinking that we needed another swingman with the loss of JRich, and thinking back to last year, it would seem so.  and while i still think that we need a guy like gerald wallace to get to that next level, if we get barnes, we will be fine because i didn't factor in that belinelli and kelenna should be rotation players

by Proof on Jul 16, 2007 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

still
Even if you remove Powell, Kosta, and Lasme, the front court 4/5 positions are manned by Harrington, Biedrins, and Powell. Foyle will still be around (he won't play) because he cant be sent to the d-league and he hasn't been bought out (yet).

I assume that whoever we sign between Barnes/Posey will also spend time at PF in some situations, and among Ellis, Belinelli, Azubiuke, and Jackson, the 2/3 spots are well-stocked.

It's tough for me to see minutes for both Barnes and Posey.

There's a financial aspect of it as well...do you want to add two contracts that would likely total to MLE? Using half of it or whatever might not hurt too much, but using all of it starts getting in the way of our flexibility.

I'm not saying it would be bad to have both, but in terms of roster space, minutes, and money, it would be more of a luxury we can't afford.

werererd
I don't think so. It gives them more to talk about with McHale in terms of KG, and it leaves us a little more well off then we would have been if a trade went down without signing him. I know McHale doesn't want old players, but if you sign a vet player like him, a blow wouldnt be suffered as severely.

I think it makes sense signing him for depth at the SF which we need barnes or not.

Lasme not guaranteed?
I have a sneaking suspicion that the Warriors didn't give Lasme a guaranteed deal, but that's just me.

Pree
What are his chances of making the roster, especially with playing in no Summer League games? Isn't he kind of screwed?
Tony aka Drawlz600 is AWESOME!!!!

not too big a problem
It's certainly not something that he or the coaching staff would have wanted, but I doubt very much that summer league games are anywhere close to a final decider in making roster decisions.  2nd rounders don't have to have guaranteed contracts, but we have to assume that they were liked at least slightly more than the undrafted guys else they wouldn't have taken them.

Last year, Barnes and Roberson made the team out of training camp, but if you google it, you'll see that there was still quite a bit of debate going through camp about them, especially Barnes.

And it appears that neither were on the summer league team at all.

http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/2006_Summer_League_Roster.html

Which suggests that the non-rosters may be people we've not even seen yet.

Barnes > Posey
I think we already discussed this before in another thread, and came to the conclusion that Barnes is slightly better, younger, is already a GSW fan favorite, and has already proven himself worthy of Nellie's system of things here.

Someone mentioned that this could just be leverage for signing Matt Barnes to a smaller contract, since we know that he wants to come back.

In my opinion, we should just resign Barnes soon since he's probably the best SF left for us and sooner or later he might get swept up by another team..

by jlagace on Jul 15, 2007 3:56 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

actually
we cant really tell who is better by jus looking at their stats. It's nellie's system that make his players look good in the stats sheet. It's not a coincidence that Harrington and Jax have better stats when they came over to the warriors. And why does Baron have better stats this year than last year playin for Monty. It's because of nellie's system. So Posey could actually be better and avg more if he plays for nellie.

by 408dub on Jul 15, 2007 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

history
shows us that Posey is a better basketball player. But is still unproven in the Nellie-ball lineup.. However Barnes has shown that he can adequately run in a Nellie lineup. Barnes had a great postseason. During the season however he was inconsistent and had many mental errors. but when he gets hot, he can sure get hot.

ultimately i think i'd rather go with posey. I think he has the ability to get up and down the court with us.

bottom line
pietrus needs to go.  Anyone is better than pietrus, even if we don't get anyone in return, move him somewhere else.  The only thing pietrus was good for was comic relief when they interviewed him... other than that, he turned the ball over too much and I think everyone can agree that they're fed up with him stepping back out of bounds on a shot fake 3 and/or constant traveling violations.

i like posey
but i'd rather have barnes as he can also play a little pg.

by jgold on Jul 15, 2007 7:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i agree
and i don't really agree with tryin to get posey.  I think we have enough guys like Posey, cant rebound and can hit 3s, so I wouldn't want to trade pietrus for him.  If we could somehow get Haslem then I am all for it.
