KG's friends: Lesser of 4 evils?

This blog is filled with diaries discussing who Golden State should (and shouldn't) give up to "bring KG to the bay".  But one question that both Mullin and McHale are probably considering just as much is what contract would come with Garnett:  Blount?  Jaric?  Hassell?  Or the worst of them all, Hudson?

The reason I bring this up, and why I think the issue merits its own diary, is because these 4 players will combine to make about $25 million in each of the next 3 years.  If the T-wolves do end up trading their 1st-team all-NBA forward, they will be darn sure to unload one of these terrible contracts with him.  Or at least attempt to.

Having said that, which of these 4 would you prefer?  One of the few Warriors games I attended last year was the blowout of Minnesota in Oakland, but I wasn't paying attention to any of these guys and needless to say, none of them stood out either.  That was really the only time I've seen any of them play so I'm going mostly off stats and scouting reports.

Minnesota fans would love nothing more than to dump Hudson- he basically gets paid 6 million a year to stink up the building.  He shoots the 3 at a decent clip but that's the most I can say.  Jaric shoots the 3 well, has good size, and can play the point, but is also very similar to Belinelli.  Hassell can D-up but doesn't shoot from outside.  He does, however, have the smallest contract.  Blount has the biggest frame (and contract) but can he run?

In the end the deciding factor may depend on who the warriors trade to Minnesota to get KG.

  • If the warriors trade Ellis, Hudson might make more sense, as he would inherit the "instant offense off the bench roll".  Or Hassell could be brought in for perimeter D.
  • If Biedrins is traded (which I think is more of a possibility than some GsoMers are willing to acknowledge) along with Wright then the warriors might not need to take back any of these contracts because those are two young frontcourt players with loads of potential.  Or the warriors could be interested in Blount as KG's backup at center (again, haven't seen Blount play so if he's a terrible fit for Nellieball, than disregard this idea).
  • The discussions between Mullin and McHale already have plenty of obstacles, but negotiating these players, and more importantly contracts, is sure to be one of the tougher ones.  None of these players are worth their contracts (how does McHale still have a job?) but the question is which one is the least worst?  Or would you refuse any trade involving any one of these players altogether?

    well
This is an aspect of a beaten topic we haven't touched on too much (superficially only), so I guess this deserves its own topic.

Ideally, we should get Ricky Davis alone. He's an expiring, and he's productive still. This, however, is probably too good to be true.

Hudson, Jaric, Blunt...those are all just nightmares.

A decent compromise might be Hassell ($6M/year, 3 more years) and Madsen (about $3m/year, 3 more years).

Hassell can be a perimeter defending SF for us, he had a rep for being decenty a while ago. Playing in MIN has probably led to alot of obscurity.

Madsen is a smaller contract and might be easier to ditch later.

    Just to clarify
We don't have to take on any of their evils at all, if we don't want to.

The whole point of taking on a crap contract would be to sweeten what would be an unfavorable package for the Wolves. As far as I'm concerned, given their total lack of leverage, any package involving Biedrins is already sufficienly sweet not to require any extra salary dumps on top of it.

If we decide to shot the moon and include Monta, Wright, and Biedrins (which I don't really support) it behooves us to hold onto the TPE to replenish our roster. If we give up all three of those guys and blow our TPE on a crap contract, I'll be pretty furious. Fortunately, I don't think Mulson would ever do that.

    To me,
the Warriors need to keep Biedrins in a Garnett trade.  So, I agree with Sleepy, they need to sweeten the pot with dealing their trade exemption for the contracts Minnesota really don't want.

I think Minnesota's worst contracts are in this order:

Hudson  - 3 year $19 million.  Hudson can't even play at this point.  This is complete dead weight.

Jaric - 4 year $27.5 million.  Jaric can still play - he's a pretty good rotation player who can fill in at various positons - but that is an awful contract.

Madsen - 3 year $8 million.  He's a useless player, but his contract isn't so bad.

Blount - 3 year $22 million.  Big contract but he's still a useful player and, being a center, still has trade value.

If I understand the trade exception correctly, the Warriors can actually take back up to $12.5 million in salaries on their $10 million trade exception.  So, they could take the two worst contracts - Hudson and Jaric - if they want to give up less in terms of player personel.

    Mark Madsen
I would rather gun for Madsen. His contract is the best we should take on. He would also provide an extra spark off the bench as a proven hustler and rebounder. Plus, he'll be coming back home to Danville where he came from.
