RANT: Everything wrong w/GSOM (and a few things right)
Wassup party peoples,
I check this website probably ten times a day because I have the Warriors fever and just can't shake it. I read HoopsHype, and ESPN, and at least half the diaries here, even the diaries where half the posts are petty arguments between one poster and another. I like this place.
However, we are no doubt going through some growing pains, and some of the old timers are frustrated, and some of the newbies are down to fight, and we're all a little fried after all this wondering, and waiting, to see if KG will land in the 'town.
So we've got new regulations and a new REGULATOR and a whole army of vigilante content monitors who are definitely ready to pop a cap in yo' ass if you write some frivolous drivel.
And that's the good part...
Anyway, where I'm going with this is: well, we might just need a bitch session. You know, a time to complain and critique and even diss a bit. You can also pay some compliments, if you are into that sort of thing.
So here goes...
WHAT IS WRONG WITH GSOM
#1 The Warriors didn't win the championship. We will not truly be happy until that happens. Even then, we probably won't be "happy".
#5 We've got more people than the current format can handle. We don't yet have the little systems that present diaries in order of popularity, for example.
#9 We are a relatively young, growing community that is trying out new rules and regulations and, well, frankly, some of the efforts are misguided. For example (and this is not a personal critique, but rather, a functionality issue): the new words in the titles (REPORT, IDEA, etc). Truthfully, they suck. The classifications are more filler that you have to scan through until you figure out what the diary is really about. I still need to read the whole title of the diary before I can figure out whether or not I want to read it.
#13 That dude with the racist Indian logo as his webpin (sorry man, it is just plain ugly).
WHAT IS RIGHT WITH GSOM
#1 The Warriors. They rule!
#2 The Warriors. The playoffs were dope!!!
#6 The personalities here. The webpins, the Sleepies and comas, the Commishes and the Zorgs, the Atmas and Fantasy and YaoButtas and all. It's nice to know that you'll be reading some familiar voices when you stop by this place.
#99.9 Rumors! I love 'em.!!!
PS - Especially for you young bucks, who may get carried away by the "what is wrong" stuff - let's keep it respectful! Remember the guidelines!!!
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Sorry man
Sorry man, but that's complete nonsense and I'm kinda offended you'd write that. I posted what other people had written about Monta (from Rotoworld and Draft Express which are respected sites) and I myself was shocked at what they wrote which was explicitly noted in that piece. It had absolutely nothing to do with Yi and I can't see how you could draw that ridiculous conclusion.

Well let's dig it up
It's fine to criticize and I really do appreciate the feedback (always), but it's wrong to misread and draw incorrect conclusions. You still aren't able to explain your accusation that Monta was dissed to hype up Yi. That's entirely wrong and shady that you'd even post a lie like that.
Again, the main sources on that piece were from Rotoworld and Draft Express which few folks would say are not credible or reliable. What can I say? If you're upset because other people knocked a guy who was a on pedestal for you, there's not much I can do for you. It's ridiculous and homer-like to get mad that I ran those links and quotes because they upset some.
Look if it didn't sit well with you about those Monta comments from other people that's fine, but honestly you're getting upset with the messenger and the linker (me) which is pretty odd.
I think you were encouraged to give constructive criticism and that isn't what you did.

Not true at all man
You posed your opinion as a fact. In doing so you questioned my intentions and credibility. Sorry, that's just wrong.
Again, you're failing to address the Draft Express and Rotoworld quotes. The quote from RealGM only augmented it.
There's not much I can do for you unless you address those points.

Growing Pains
KG to the Warriors is a definite wait and see, impatient people are going to suffer the most.
Wait and see is the whole theme of what's going to happen around here in regards to Atma dropping the note of "big things on the horizon on the backend" to get some stuff in place. I'm going to think he's hustling to get that done but has to wait and work around the red tape of SBNation.
Labeling things isn't a requirement but its going to let everyone get into a better habit of labeling what their dairy is mostly about in one sentence or less, yeah?
Zorg disappeared for a bit but the Foyle notes and small reports at then end of other things brought him back out of the woodwork!

SORRY
I personally like adding REPORT, IDEA, RUMOR, etc. to the title of diaries to differentiate what they might be about. I think the issue is whether or not they're used in the right context and not necessarily that it contains the right content. I don't think it's in anyway misguiding or tricking people into thinking it's something else.
Nevertheless...things that make you go hmmmm!

Once again:
If you're one to dig through all the diaries anyways, then the label doesn't affect you at all- by your own admission, you read the site religiously and scan other sites as well. If such is the case, I could probably label a diary "REPORT: Tiger Woods Works Out for Warriors", and you would still click on it. Why? Just cuz.
For other situations, however, we've gotten so many trolls posting their random ideas or fake rumors, that it's hard to separate the content from the chaff. If it's labeled properly, you know someone probably cares enough to post something worth glancing at , at the least.
And since it takes so little time, and some people like it, and it doesn't affect those who don't (aside from having something to complain about)...what's the problem, really?
If the titles without labels weren't informative enough, and the labels with labels aren't informative for you...then...again...what's the beef?
by OptionZero on Jul 17, 2007 10:44 PM PDT 0 recs
the beef is aesthetic, maybe political
for me, a better rule would be: have a clear title. if you want, list examples of good titles.
i guess i am a little more left-brain (or is it right-brain?), or more anarchist over militarist, or more artist over scientist: i am into the creative and kooky titles more than i am into this place being a clearly defined roadmap to specified information.
all of that said, i am not going to preach on this for long. (on a side note: i think it is interesting, mr. OZ, that now that you have been appointed sherriff, you are posting a lot. on a positive tip, you are "owning" your new responsibility. at the same time, you are taking up more space. just something to think about.)

Totally with Mike D on the labels
As an aside, drivel like the gswarrior4life's latest diary shouldn't really be dignified with the label "idea." Plenty of sports blogs have specific language that discourages totally outlandish trade proposals and "laundry list" posts with no analysis (a la 49erGiantwhatever). Also, I have no problem with the occasional typo or grammatical error, but it's a tough slog when every other word is misspelled or misused.
If for whatever reason you see fit not to delete stuff like that, you should at least label it "my pre-pubescent fantasy" or "look at me, I wrote a diary..."

how about we
"All of this has been covered before, so maybe it isn't worth its own diary; but at least it isn't a rumor, per se." Ya, ya I need a url: http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2007/7/18/171/84274
(see most recent diary!) Accidents happen, myself included! But let's at least look down the list of diaries before we duplicate each other's efforts. Back end, Front end, sideways, whatever. We don't need Atma to pull electronic miracles, and having diarycop supervising diaries is just a sad development when WE CAN DO IT OURSELVES.
GSoM was great and will be again, when as a community we lighten up and respect eachother's ideas rather than continue the pissing contests. That's what separated this from lots of the other blogs.

ATTENTION: The Indian logo and ranters
For all those who have a problem with it, listen up:
jeppalepala has decided voluntarily to change his signature. He does not believe it is offensive, since it is the actual logo that was used by the team back in the day; others in fact think it's just kinda funny.
In an effort to salve some of the tensions going on right now, jeppalepala has graciously agreed not to cause any trouble. I asked him if he'd do it, with no repercussions, and he stepped up to the plate.
By tomorrow it should be changed (he went to sleep already), so give him the 24 hours or whatever.
I am leaving this diary open for now so people can let off some steam. In the future, however, I don't really want to see more diaries about how the site is run, and I don't want to see off-hand comments about any of the GSoMers (atma, me, anyone).
My personal information is here:
jon.d.ma@gmail.com
AIM (Jetforze)
I'm giving you my info for a reason- if you have issues with the site is run, TALK TO ME. I'm here, I'll listen, I'm not hiding from anyone. A number of members have already taken the time to chat with me, everyone else is welcome to as well.
Let's get back to writing diaries about the Warriors and Basketball.
Fair enough, everyone?

careful how you wield your power
now, of course, we all want this blog to be on point - focused on the most interesting news about the dubs. the trick is, how do we get there?
i would agree with the premise, spoken and unspoken, that we need a little bit of regulation out here. thus, OZ, regulator.
we also still need to keep the doors open for public discussion, of the website itself and of course of the Dub Nation. big bureaucracies have a person called the "ombudsman" that takes care of stuff like this. nonprofit organizations go on retreats to air all the ideas and beefs. here, we need to have a little focused conversation once in a while (i think, at least) to remind ourselves what we are doing here.

hmmm....
(1) as your most recent comment, "If I were going to delete this diary, I would have done it dozens of comments ago." illustrates, power can be a dangerous thing. suddenly, you can delete my diary? why? just because you are moderator now? is that going to make this a better place? this deserves more discussion.
(2) i wasn't talking about your webpin in particular. i followed the creation process on that. i was making a more global point that, hey, if you are the publisher of the New York Times, some days you are going to get called out, by name, in public, for some of the things going on in your paper, rightly or wrongly; and if you are ATMA BROTHER ONE or, now, OptionZero, and you are the official GSOM crew, you will occasionally be called by name, rightly or wrongly, and that is just part of the game.
i mean, there are some benefits to running this site, right? a little bit of ad revenue must be coming in. there are definitely tickets, other freebies, access to the dubs. of course, no one is a millionaire. but, as far as Warriors fans go, the GSOM official folks are semi-celebrities. so, enjoy your celebrity, with all that comes with it!

Now you're filling in blanks with assumptions
- It's not an illustration of power. I left it open because, like you said, it deserved discussion. I think you're letting your anarchist side get the best of you here.
- Getting called out on content is fine. People are free to post their opinion on the substance of writings. Questioning the system, even, is acceptable- but to a point. There is no system that will please everyone, and attempting to do so results in no system at all. Isn't it possible to participate in the community and respect how it operates even while disagreeing personally with some aspects of it? We could spend all of time debating the finer points of organization of blogs and whatnot, but then we'd have no time for basketball. Just suck it up, do your best to play along, and take whatever fun you can out of it.

um, nothing passive here
i wasn't saying that you have the keys to the site and know all about the income from the banner and google ads. however, that does add up to something.
and i'm not trying to bring anything down. i like this place (i think i said that before). i want it to be good, better, awesome, amazing. that's why i bring the criticism - essentially, i am trying to shed light on ways this can be better. i like reading all the comments (yours included), the diaries, etc. i don't want that experience to be lost in a wave of crack-downs and such.
but, i still don't think you get me on the power issue. let's let it sit for a bit. we'll see how things go.

RANT: These diary titles and diaries
You did make a lot of constructive points and I give you a ton of credit for that. However, I can honestly tell you that the misdirected and mislabeled rants that are becoming all to commonplace here and all the negativity about GSoM from GSoMers are really starting to annoy me. To be perfectly honest with ya'll it's going to send me into an early retirement from GSoM. I'm just sick of it. (and this isn't entirely directed at mike d by any stretch- he's been a great longtime and loyal GSoMer)
In terms of traffic this is the leading blog on the entire SB Nation network and we're younger than many of them. That includes Athletics Nation and it's our offseason right now. Pause for a second and marinate on that- a Golden State Warriors blog the top traffic getter? How did that happen? Before the Warriors even ended the curse we were top 5 in terms of traffic. We're the top (or maybe top 2) NBA team blog out there also even before everyone jumped on the Warrior bandwagon.
If there's so much wrong with GSoM that deserves a diary or two a week filled with rants, then the other sports team blogs must really, really be screwing up. Either that or we're doing something right...
No doubt there's tons for this entire community to improve upon, but I'm proud of what we've achieved in a little over 2 years.
UNSTOPPABLE BABY!

Growing pains
The influx of traffic from the awesome season and the KG rumors has hit a wall because of the lull in the offseason, so the community is getting a little restless.
Also, as we get bigger, we have to learn to live with each other.
Its an adjustment period, but hey...thats what the offseason is for. Come training camp and preseason, we'll be rounding into game-shape. We're already UNSTOPPABLE, can you imagine how good we'll bee once we hit our stride, figure it all out?

GSOM-plosion
It was a really thoughtful diary. If anything like this was deleted by the Secret Police, I'd be pissed. Think about it. All this BS because of an obnoxious poster. GSOM admins have to take responsibility, but there are better ways to solve problems then by royal decree. Like you could have put a guidelines discussion on the first page during the offseason. Make it democratic. Build community. Maybe you would have learned how easy it is to add a recommendation system for the diaries and have them listed on the sidebar.
A little wisdom could have weighed the options between putting up or banning a diary poster like 49er versus all this negative crap. I'm a little tired of our Admins throwin down with posters at the drop of a hat. Its YOUR site right? Why stoop to arguing?

Um what are you talking about?
It was a really thoughtful diary. If anything like this was deleted by the Secret Police, I'd be pissed. Think about it. All this BS because of an obnoxious poster.
For the record I would never delete this diary. I have personally only deleted a diary if it didn't follow the character limit, was a blatant repeat with no additional in depth analysis (god- there were like 4 Azubuike signing diaries when it was already on the front page), or something racist/ homophobic, etc (usually from a dumb fan of a different team). But thankfully I'm out of the moderation/ baby-sitting game to focus on writing.
When have we not taken responsibility? And by the way there are no "admins" here. There's 5 writers and 1 moderator (OptionZero).
There's a community guidelines under the About Golden State of Mind section. It used to be on the main Opening Tip menu, but we moved it to save space. Every time you post a comment or diary there's a link to it. Honestly what more do you want? If people don't read it or follow it that's out of our hands.
Every time we've made a major change Fantasy Junkie or I have posted a diary asking for suggestions and feedback. I think that's a pretty misguided statement.
Well I think that's what we have done. Sorry, but I really don't need your advice on how to build a community. I've actually helped do it. There's over 8,000 people who visit GSoM everyday good for 25,000+ hits a day. If you don't think GSoM is a community, then you probably weren't there for GSoM Night where over 350+ GSoMers rolled to a Warriors game.
Maybe you should stop making these assumptions. We've posted several times that we DO NOT have that functionality on the GSoM backend system. We are running on an older system than Athletics Nation and much far behind Daily Kos. For the millionth time this is completely out of our hands.
Sorry man, but this makes no sense and I have no idea what you're talking about.
