Belinelli will play in Euro 2007

Just found in http://www.eurobasket2007.org/en/default.asp that Marco Belinelli is going to play for team Italy in Euro 2007 - Italian Head coach Recalcati told the reporters, that Belinelli will play in NBA Summer league, and afterwards head to Italy, to join their national team:

Recalcati said to FIBA Europe on Sunday: "Marco will play with Golden State in the summer league but we expect him to join the National Team on July 20-21 in preparation for the EuroBasket.

P.S. What you, as Warriors fans, think about Biedrins (he has confirmed, that he is going to play for team Latvia) and Belinelli playing for their national teams? I know - injuries scare you, but aside of that - is it a good confidence building experience or waste of time? It's interesting for me, because I'm Latvian, who during past 2-3 seasons has become a hardcore Warriors fan (I woke up at 4 o'clock during the last month of regular season [known as the time, when WE BELIEVE sign rose in the air and never fell down again] and during the playoffs too to watch Warriors games).

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

what i think
injuries are always a possibility. but biedrins is a good player and im sure he's been working out this summer a lil' already, hopefully on his offensive game. I think it's a good idea for both.

its a great idea
international play is some serious competition. it would be a great confidence booster if those two ended up playing extraordinarily well for their respective teams. sure they run the risk of injury. but you can't get better w/o that.

Aside from the Warriors interests
I think it is great for international basketball and piques my interest even more for the international game as I know more of the players

Same thing with nacent internationl baseball tournys.

I hope in the coming decades these sports can achieve even half of the excitment world wide that World Cup Soccer (football) brings.

This is what the European players do
European participation in NBA basketball will be just like their participation in the various soccer leagues. Their country team is a priority and virtually always comes first (especially when it involves the world cup, but also the other region-wide tourneys). In fact, the Euro soccer leagues take scheduled breaks to allow for international competition. The sooner the NBA digests this and accommodates it, given the rise in European player participation, the better.

p.s.
Oh, and welcome to the Golden State Warriors Ramiism. It's nice to see some Latvian participation on GSOM and please receive some golden sunshiny love from the home of the Warriors.

thanks
thanks - I have been reading this blog for a while (it has been a year or something like this since I discovered this site).

Actually, I could update information about Biedrins summer life in Latvia, maybe translate in shortened form some of his interviews in local press, if you would be interested in that.

About his training activities - he took a something like  2 weeks of after the end of the season, but now he is about to get to work again.

And I really agree with those, who say, that in nba must be like in soccer - if you don't let your players play for their national teams, than you receive serious fines like automatic losses and so..

Man that would be great!  It'd be cool to hear how Biedrins is being covered throughout the season in the local media over there; I also think it's awesome that the NBA is steadily reaching a global scale

Hopefully translations of articles wouldn't violate any GSoM guidlines; but if you just pulled out any key points/juicy bits I would think that'd be fine

I like to see what European players can do
in their own system and see how basketball is blowing up around the world.  think it all started by a football coach who stuck a peach basket on the wall somewhere in a Massachusetts gym to keep his jocks in shape in the Winter.

Good stuff above, but ...
I am surprised that no one has commented on the report that Belinelli will not play for us in the regular season. This would be a disappointment. Anyone else have info on this? I hope that this is merely an example of the Italian coach hoping out loud.

by warriorfaninlakerland on Jul 2, 2007 11:37 PM PDT reply actions

Not sure what you mean.
Unless you're talking about another report aside from the one above? It says Belinelli will play in the summer league for the Warriors and then head off to play in Eurobasket07 for Italy. Eurobasket finishes September 16.

Has it been reported somewhere else that the Italian coach has said Belinelli won't play for us in the regular season?

he can play
Belinelli has three seasons remaining on his contract with Fortitudo Bologna, but has an escape clause to join the Warriors.
