Gossip: Kg, Baron and FA's 08

I would normally not post this in a diary but i thought this would promote discussion. Optionzero you are welcome to erase this if you like.

I was on the mercurynews message board and I found this http://forums.mercurynews.com/n/mb/message.asp?msg=5450&nav=messages&webtag=mn-warriors
This is written by the same guy who broke the Nelson news a day early last year.

He brings up three points worth discussion:

  1. The Warriors don't plan to extend Baron. Interesting and probably shrewd on the warriors part given Baron's injury history. Will this create chaos in the locker room though? an unhappy Baron is a scary thing
  2. The Warriors could trade Baron to BOston in a three way deal for Garnett. This seems self defeating, because the reason we would want Garnett is to pair him with Baron. Also I dont think that Garnett would want to come to a Baron-less warriors team.
  3. Mully is saving up for the 08 free agent class and his number one target is Gilbert.......
Also, check this out, which he posted a couple days back....http://forums.mercurynews.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=mn-warriors&msg=5446.1&ctx=0

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

something is brewing...
Kawakami wrote about KG spending a lot of time in Cali/watching the ATP tennis tour (Baron attended as well).  He also mentioned that KG will attend Mike Bibby's bball camp...other guests in attendance include Baron, Stephen Jackson, and Matt Barnes.

BARON
The Warriors don't plan to extend Baron.

This doesn't mean anything.  Basically, they're just not ready to extend his contract, not that they wouldn't.  Big difference.

wtf
What? It doesn't anywhere say that they are going to extend him. It says they don't plan on doing it. Which means they probably aren't. How are you going to say it means something completely different then what it says and then follow it up with "big difference." Like you're right or something.

NOT RIGHT
I agree that it doesn't say anywhere that they are going to extend him, but I was just stating that them not planning on extending him was different than them not extending him at all.  It doesn't say that anywhere either!  I wasn't trying to imply that I was right by saying "big difference", so I don't know where you get that from.
It says they don't plan on doing it. Which means they probably aren't.

You're basically making an ASS of yourself by ASSuming that they aren't!  I was basically saying that they don't have to extend him now and wait until the regular season to give him a chance to prove he's worth the extension!

I love BARON and what he brings to the team, but I'm not going to agree on paying him way more than we should if he can't stay healthy!

No seriously though, why would they? He's 100. He's never healthy. They aren't going to resign him or extend him. It's not rocket science. That would just be a rookie Mullin Mistake that he has seemingly grown out of. Whether you want him or not, he ain't comin' back when his contract's up.

POINT TAKEN
I just remember when we got him and how it sparked all the changes we've seen in the organization!

I know JRICH has put all his heart and soul into the team, but I always felt that the W's needed a PG like BARON to make us better, which he did!  Realistically I have to agree w/ you that he isn't and probably will never be 100% ever again!

Just hope we don't go w/o a good PG for so many years like when we had a BIMBO, VONTEEGO or CLAXTON running the point!  Sad, sad!

This is exactly what he says

The warriors have no plans to ever extend Baron's contract

How can that be misunderstood?

MISUNDERSTOOD
Well first of all this was posted on a message board by who cares?!

The other thing is that you're right that he did say the word "ever", but then in his last sentence all in bold he didn't use "ever" again.  When has anything been "rock solid" when someone's "heard" it?  We don't even know who the source is who he supposedly heard this from!

I'm not trying to argue that BARON will or won't get the extension, just clarifying that from what I read, that they just didn't "plan" on it, not that they weren't ever going to.  My bad!

Dude chill out...
I am not saying this is a viable resource, although he did have the nelson signing before anyone else did. All I am saying is his post made it clear that Baron was not going to get an extension at all. He already said it once clearly i dont think he had to say "at all" everytime he said it.

But who cares move on. I was just giving you some gossip. W's not signing baron so they could possibly get Gilbert.

NO PROB
I am pretty chill until someone like COMA comes around critiquing my comments.  No offense to the gossip that you brought, but I'm just sticking up for my own opinions!

And if things don't work out w/ BARON, then AGENTZERO it is!  I just can't wait until the season starts just like everyone else!

Pretty damn pointless
to bring KG to a Baron-less Dubb club. I wouldn't even show up to take my physical if I were KG.

by phiLthyphiL on Jul 20, 2007 11:06 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

For the Boston threeway to work...
KG obviously would be reluctant to come to a youth-less (at least less youthful) Baron-less Warrior team, so we'd have to  promise him that we're going to sign Arenas or another superstar in the offseason or else he can opt out (whether or not such a clause is possible I don't know). Still it's questionable whether KG would accept that.

by vignette17 on Jul 20, 2007 11:13 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

answer me this
Why would KG leave his home, AND a new look, youthful Wolves team, for the Warriors who will have just as much youth and talent IF they trade BD to get him. I hear that the Warriors plan on calling KG's bluff and trading for him anyway. But if i was McHale, i can't see him upsetting Garnett by trading him somewhere he doesn't want to go.

if they don't plan on resigning BD, then whats the point of getting KG? He won't bring a championship to Oakland. Otherwise he'd already have 10+ titles. Trade BD then to Boston for youth and expiring deals.

Baron to Boston for Theo, Bassy, Gerald Green and Leon Powe.

Then we'd have:

Monta/Bassy/sarunas
stephen Jackson/Kelenna
Gerald Green/Marco
Al Harrington/BWright/Powell/Lasme/Powe
Andris/Theo or Foyle

In a few years our lineup could have a starting 5 of:

Monta
Belinelli
Green
Wright
Biedrins

We have interior D, a quick slashing pg, a lights out sg, a versatile forward.

Well...
I posted a diary a week or two ago proposing this same deal and got some pretty mixed responses. The thing that I found most interesting were my poll results:

http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2007/7/13/184548/380

What should we do if we can't land KG

  • Minor Tweaking 36%
  • Youth Movement 32%
  • Blockbuster or Die (give them AB) 32%
While i admit it was a pretty small sample size the GSoM community seems pretty split on the direction of the franchise.

Personaly without being close to the people involved its hard to gauge things like Barons attitude and the progression of our youth etc. it makes this kind of a tough choice. I'm not sure what we should do but chances are we will fall into the minor tweaking category just because its the path of least resistance.

by olympicmike on Jul 20, 2007 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

chemistry question
just like I wonder if there are any coaches other than nelson who can command BD's respect, I wonder if subtracting Baron wouldn't diminish Jax value and emotional value - my perception was those two fed off of eachother's energy 2nd half last season

besides, any moving Baron has to be part of a full on youth movement while any trade for KG has to be a GFIN move - can't imagine doing both

by hardcore on Jul 20, 2007 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea
i think its one or the other. Personally i'd trade BD for more youth seeing as how he won't be here after the summer. keeping him this season will not bring us a championship, maybe not even the playoffs. Save money, play the youngins' and get a top tier FA in the summer of 08' to build around.

Did anyone else read all the posts on the second link?

Fat said KG is DEFINITELY traded but wasn't sure if it was to the warriors. Although there might be a different trade out there that he may be alluding to.

BRING ARENAS BACK!
If your post is somewhat true and the Warriors are targeting Arenas, I welcome that!

by ballin on Jul 20, 2007 1:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Arenas SUCKS
He is a selfish shoot first think second player that I would never welcome back after he burned us the first time, he shoots a lot and makes way less then he makes, just because he takes a lot of shots and makes some of them so he has a high average on a team where Jamison dominated averaging nearly 25 a game in the first round doesn't make me want to see a shooting guard in PG body on my team, never will this happen Arena's is all show an no heart!
It's all about the killer cross-over baby!

by warriorsfiend on Jul 20, 2007 2:42 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

you are partially right
i tend to think Arenas is a chucker, but no more than BD and AI are.  In fact Arenas has a marginally higher fg%  at 43%  while BD (41%) and AI (42%) follow close behind. Arenas and BD average the same amount of rebound and turnovers per game. Arenas is a better free throw and 3 point shooter and has proven to be a clutch player late in games. The one knock Arenas has is that he is not an above average play-maker, while BD is top 3 in the league (when healthy).

Arenas is also 3 years younger.

Your Jamison sentence does not make sense to me. Jamison scored 25 ppg in the playoffs because he was their only scoring option. Arenas wasn't even playing at the time!

It sounds to me like you've seen Gilbert play, but you didn't really SEE what he was doing. IF you did see what he was doing for the last 2 seasons, you'd see that he is an ice cold assasin with the basketball. He's money late in games because he has that will to succeed and has a killer instinct (which BD has to his credit, and which Jrich did not).

If GA came back to Oaktown i think there'd be enough shots for everyone. Three years ago Washington had three guys average over twenty a game (Arenas, Jamison, Hughes) so i don't think his ball hogging (In an uptempo style game where it creates more posessions per game) would affect the Warriors as much.

I blame Cohan for GA leaving in the first place anyway. If you were given 60 milion you would take it. end.

I Will Pass On Arenas
Like a previous poster, Im not cool with brining Arenas back. The guy has a injury that has historicaly been a nagging injury to most NBA stars in there career.....the guy is going to turn into Baron Davis in 2 years with the on and off injuries...but if he stays healthy enough to play 82 NBA games, he will still be that ball hogging shoot first point guard that the Warriors dont need.

On top of that...he left us to skip to Washington, when we were the only team that gave his ass a chance when we got him in the 2nd round.

Really...three things we know about Fatcity
1.  Fatcity is not a season ticket holder?

"buy Warriors season tickets...That's all he could tell me (he's been sworn to secrecy)...His buddy sometimes trains with KG on the beach.
________________

2. The August 6th date may be timely?

"I cant tell you how I know...I can tell you this though..The owner of the wolves came out today with a statement that they wernt going to trade KG, and also that KG wants to stay..It's all PR BS..In the coming days/weeks KG will demand a trade...The wolves will look like they had no choice but to make a deal, this will help sell the trade to the Minnisota fan base..It's all PR.."

_______________

3.  Fat city doesn't like Golden State of Mind
    and is a copycat?

From: CyrilBaptise
To:  FatCity

Cool, thanks for the insider info. This is almost as good as your Nelson scoop that someone else had posted on GSW State of Mind site a day before you posted it here.

No chance..I used to read that site (one of only a few humans that do)...

And watch..My source will be right  on this one..again....A KG deal is done,.and no,-. they arent breaking any rules...You go ahead and be bitter..I could just as easily keep this items to myself...I just like to share with fellow fans..Right before the Nelson new broke, posters were giving me a hard time..That's OK..So go ahead..Give it to me bitter Cyril..

My head just exploded
So many possibilities and the anticipationg is killing me. Sleepy's probably not gonna sleep until Aug 7th, sheesh.

I see a three big tidal waves bound for a collision course:

1. Not extending Baron.

  • Baron's got to seriously be thinking about opting out next year, but such a move is only worth while if he can stay healthy and dominate this year. Doing so might earn him a Billups-like 4 year contract. Motivation for a paycheck, we all know, is darn powerful.
  • I don't buy the trade to Boston, especially with the move for Garnett. They're going in opposite directions, getting Garnett on a PG-less team is foolishness. By not extending Baron, Mullin must be saying he wants to go for it this year as one final shot with the stud but oft-injured PG.
2. The move for Garnett
- Garnett may or may not want to come here, but he doesn't have much choice in the matter, because Minnesota really needs the rebuilding package they could get for him. Whether or not he stays in the Bay Area after a trade...thats his choice. However, to land the best contract after opting out, he, like Baron, needs to dominate and quiet and whispers that he's past his prime or on the way down. Dominate and he gets Rashard Lewis money. Fail and he settles for Ben Wallace money, or has to stick around the Bay and try again.

3. The still-uncertain future of Don Nelson

  • Obviously the one big holdup is money, we all know it, he won't deny it. Get KG, however, and Nelson probably pays Cohan $4M to coach the W's. Either way, it's a package deal. Get KG, Baron won't whine about an extension or not, and Nelson is guaranteed back.
  • If Nelson does come back, its only for a year. There's no way he coaches that third year with his age and the uncertainty of the team.
What does it all add up to? Well, I'm gonna be optimistic with this one: Mullin is doing his best Grand Admiral Thrawn impersonation and spinning a mega-complex plan. (Star Wars post-Trilogy fans will get it)

Like I mentioned, trade for Garnett and you quell the any possibility Baron turns into a cancer. You can't really argue against being paired with a Hall of Fame big man. Trade for Garnett quiets Baron and also ensure Nellie's back. Let's run down the list again:

  • Baron and KG paired together with the possibility of each opting out of their deals and getting big final paydays. Both are on their best behavior in search of the $$$ and play their heads off.
  • Nelson returns for his final hurray and has the best core he could every ask for (KG > Webber, Baron > Spree). How can he not pull out all the stops and go out in a final blaze of glory, now that he has his magic tools?
The best part of it all, and what may be on Mullin's mind...he doesn't mind if both Baron and KG opt-out. If (when) they both walk, that's what, $35M off the books? Presumably either Harrington or Foyle, maybe both, go in the deal as well, so they'd essentially have nothing left on the payroll except Stephen Jackson and one of Ellis/Biedrins' extensions and whatever crap we take from Minnesota.

We should then have more than enough to make a play for any of the free agents mentioned in this  Hollinger article about the '08 offseason

Mullin will have effectively set up a win-now, win -later situation. If you ever wanted to eat your cake and own the bakery, this would be your dream situation.

Make it happen, fellas.
