IDEA: Alston as a backup PG?

As you might know, Houston has 5 points guards.
Mike James(aquired from Minnesota for Juwan Howard) Aaron Brooks(26 pick in this years draft), Rafer Alston, Steve Francis(signed 2 year deal yesterday) and John Lucas III

I hear from ESPN rumor central, they could make more moves

The addition of Steve Francis likely will trigger more changes.  The Rockets currently have 5 points guards.  Gm Daryl Morey has said he is seeking to move John Lucas III.

Several teams, the New Orleans Hornets in particular, have indicated interest, but Morey said nothing is imminent.  With Francis on the roster, he could also seek to deal Rafer Alston.

heres the link http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/features/rumors

what do you guys think?  Would you guys like "Skip to My Lou" on our team? He would seem like a pretty good backup to Baron.

Alston for a 2008 2nd round pick?

Alston
Here are his numbers

Most glaring is that .375 FG% from last season, it's absolutely atrocious. Basically he has no jumper or midrange game at all. His 3P shooting is ok, not great; even his FT is mediocre.

He doesn't dish out a ton of assists, either.

One thing I'll give him is Jeff Van Gundy's offense doesn't really help a penetrating, uptempo PG like Alston, so I suspect a new system would help...but really he's not top tier or anything. He'd be a servicable backup.

He has a mid-sized deal with three years remaining:
07-08: $4.6M
08-09: $4.9M
09-10: $5.3M

He is 30 years old, 6'2, 175 lbs.

Wouldn't be the greatest move (I'd prefer Jarret Jack) in the world, I'd rather have a Pg that could shoot at least a little.

i like..
that'd be dope if the dubs let him come in and play his new york free style of ball with them. seein some exciting fancy dribbling and between the leg passes from skip would help ease the still torn heart of losing j rich, as far as entertainment goes. plus he plays solid d and could hit a 3 or two if the starters are slumpling.                                                                                                I remember he got cut by us a few years back when musselhead was coach i think, but maybe nellie would like him as a back up nash type or somethin. he's got a veteran and leaderhip style so I could see him bonding in with jackson and baron (and Garnett).

by Muggsy on Jul 21, 2007 12:09 AM PDT reply actions

okay i would really like this
because he would be fun and cool to watch, plus i think that he would have freedom to do what he does best and have fun.

I was seriously thinking about the idea that we could bring in an and 1 baller the other day while seeing the show on espn.  I saw "helicopter", and i thought that it would be cool if we let him try out and run with the sqaud.  im not sure how tall he is, but the dude can get up!  plus those guys are underrated as basketball players as they are looked at more of as entertainers.  Just thought it would be cool to have "helicopter" runnin down the court recievin alley oop passes from BD idk.  the dude is athletic and if he could ever make it in the nba, this might be the best team for him.

There's a reason...
only one And1 player has made it to the NBA. They're not good enough. The reason they look so good on tv is cause nobody plays defense, they only have 1 or 2 players over 6'8 and they're playing against scrubs. If you had a team of the best NBA human highlight reels, let's say B-Diddy, VC, T-Mac, Kobe, & J-Rich (no PF or C for lack of height in And1) vs the best And1 has to offer, let's say AO, Hellicopter, 1/2 Man 1/2 Amazing, Main Event, & Spyda (Sorry, the Professor's 140lb body aint cuttin it here) and put them in a streetball game, what do you think would happen? The NBA players would crush them.
The And1 team couldn't even beat the Dub's backup squad. Foyle would have like 10 blks!

I like what And1 does. It entertains me. The dunks are cool. The dribbles are cool. The showmanship is great, but they ain't no NBA players.

by Bake Da Ripper on Jul 22, 2007 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

dude
i never said any of them would be better then kobe or all stars.  you sound like an idiot saying that the best nba players would beat the best and one players.  DUH!!!  i realize that they are just putting on a show and that nobody really plays defense.  ive been to a game in oakland.  all im saying is that they are under-rated.  if you have handles out there, you have handles anywhere.  they got some great athletes and some of their players have torn up other pro leagues.  i think that if you look at them and you know they are AND1, that gms may right them off.  and i know that most of them probably aren't good enough anyway, but i bet a few of them could be in the nba, and the dunkers could flourish on a team that opens it up and runs.

by Proof on Jul 24, 2007 12:46 AM PDT up reply actions

if we got an AND1 player...
i think i might puke.

If we go after a PG from Houston, I'd rather have Luther Head. He's younger, cheaper and a better shooter. The negatives is that he isn't a natural point guard. Similar to Monta in that he's a bit of a tweener, but i'd just seriously have him over Alston who is over-rated even with his mediocre/sub-par statistics.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Jul 21, 2007 8:46 AM PDT reply actions

Head available?
I don't think head is affected, he's a SG.

As they stand...

PG: Francis, James, Alston, Brooks
SG: Wells, Head, Snyder, Sura (injured reserve?)
SF: McGrady, Battier
PF: Scola, Hayes (restricted FA gonna stay), Landry, Reed, Novak
C: Ming, Mutumbo, Butler

They will probably move Alston and one of the PFs.

by OptionZero @ Golden State Of Mind on Jul 21, 2007 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

they get
more talent if they trade Head. Alston has a bloated contract as well as 3 years left.

No one wants a pg that shot less than 40% last year. He's Houston's problem.

I can see how they start Mike James and have Rafer off the bench while starting Stevie at the 2 and havinh Bonzi come off the bench. Francis does not necesarily need to play the point.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Jul 21, 2007 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Trading Head
They don't need to trade Head. At this point, they have more than enough talent, the only issue left is ditching an unnecessary contract.

It doesn't need to be Alston, but since they went to the trouble acquiring Francis and James and drafting Brooks, he seems logically like the odd man out.

He may be Houston's problem, but he's not a worthless asset. Miami and the Clippers still need PGs, or alternatively, they can package something else like picks or Snyder or something to move him.

In any case, we don't need Head. He plays no defense, he's not a PG, and he's undersized at the SG. His value is outside shooting, and we have Belinelli for that already. Head doesn't help us at all at backup PG or SF.

by OptionZero @ Golden State Of Mind on Jul 21, 2007 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

OK i concede that point.
But i still can't see why Alston has much value. I can see Miami because of his prior stint with them.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

I'd rather try and take...
Luther head off their hands...just for the sake of not having him torch us every time we play the Rockets.   It would be a move like Billy Beane acquiring Arthur Rhodes from Seattle.

How about a Point Guard who ............
actually dishes out ASSISTS.  Now there's a novel idea.  The W's don't need a PG who is going to fire off fade away jumpers from 28 feet away, we already have one of those.  With the shooters on this team, they need a PG who will push the rock and average double-digit assists.

by World B Free on Jul 21, 2007 11:03 AM PDT reply actions

by Bake Da Ripper on Jul 22, 2007 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Double Digit Assists
Steve Nash is the only player From 2004/05 - 2006/07 to average double digit assists. Baron is between 8 & 9 APG through that period of time, so we already have the closest thing available to double digit assists. Plus, you get your fade-away 28-footers too!

why dont we get bad santa from and 1 he said if nelson wants a championship then he would want to be a back up for baron since baron took his spot in ucla and it was the last scolarship they had left.

Luther Head is not a true point guard
he is like Monta, a undersized 2 that cant pass.
i hope we win a championship soon

by Da Jrich tribute on Jul 21, 2007 1:05 PM PDT reply actions

No
And 1 PG's, this isn't a NY play ground this is a NBA team. There's a reason why you never see And 1 players in the league and it's because they're garbage. Sure they can put on a show but when it comes to a structured game, they're no good. So sure you can say it'd be fun to have because they can "dribble through their legs" but that doesn't translate to wins. So no more advocating of bringing in someone from the And 1 tour to back up BD, one of the worst ideas I've heard so far.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Jul 21, 2007 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

Dude, hes not garbage
hes done well as Houston's point guard.  If he was a true AND 1 baller, he wouldn't be in the NBA.  The real AND 1 ballers are the REAL garbage, not Rafer.  Did you know that Rafer worked out for us about 4 years ago? Or i think he was invited to traning camp, but i dont know, all i know he was working out with us.
i hope we win a championship soon

by Da Jrich tribute on Jul 21, 2007 1:34 PM PDT reply actions

Not garbage, sure
But his team just drafted a PG, traded for another, and signed a third. Not the best resume-builder: "i'm so good my team used every avenue to bring in guys at my position!"

Yeah, he worked out for us. Then he got cut.

by OptionZero @ Golden State Of Mind on Jul 21, 2007 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

he's mediocre at best
still not worth a second round pick...maybe if we still had suckleavy.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Jul 21, 2007 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm
not saying Rafer is bad, he's a DECENT PG at best. I'm saying everyone else who plays on the tour is garbage, that's why you never see that type of player in the league. Although Rafer can't shoot to save his life. I wouldn't want him on the Dubs, ever.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Jul 21, 2007 2:08 PM PDT reply actions

NO on Rafer Alston
He's not a good distributor, and an even worse shooter.  The only thing he has going for him at this point is his 3 point shooting.  He's not much better than Jasikevicius for us.

Forget getting an AND 1 player
Lets get the AND1 hype man/announcer.

"OOOOOHHH BABY OOOOOOOHHHH BABY! BOOM DIZZLE MY LITTLE BROTHER to MONTAAA OOOOHHH BABY THATS MY STEP SON OOOOOOOH BABY!!!!" I don't know why but that guy cracks me up. lol.

Seriously though I think that if Skip is going to be a good player in any system it is ours. I don't think that this is our best option at back-up PG but I don't think it would be a disaster either.

. . .Corey Williams aka Homicide.

There's your "AND1 Baller" right there. He was on our Summer League team in Vegas.

He didn't exactly have a stellar summer league run, but he's had some "success" in the past.

Learn about him.

Alston to Heat?
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4987190.html
He said he would not necessarily move other point guards, but the Miami Heat have expressed interest in Rafer Alston, with forward Udonis Haslem and center Michael Doleac among the names discussed.

According to this he may be headed to the Heat. I'm not sure how this would effect the possible S&T w/ MP for JWill, but this would seem to make JWill even more available if the deal goes down.

Look at his numbers from last season
The Heat didn't even think he was good enough to keep around to backup Jason Williams.

Questions? Complaints?

gotta wonder tho
if Payton wouldn't want to go out on a high note, finishing in front of home crowds - not that winning a ring with Wade & Shaq wasn't motivating ... he has lost a lot of his explosiveness & def tho

The Glove...
has had a great career, which was topped off with a championship ring. He should retire. Maybe become an assistant coach with the Dubs? Or do some front office work?

by Bake Da Ripper on Jul 22, 2007 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

GP
I agree. The Glove has already reached his prime and should be happy to retire with a championship. It would be nice for him to retire back in the Bay as an assistant coach or a scout. That would be a splendid idea!
