Thought: There's Something In The Air...
And it smells like....
Something "Major" (thanx Posh Spice) is going down. Now, this diary is not about KG, nor do I have sources to support my gut feeling, but it does seem like Mully is up to something and here's why:
As most of you know, ever since Mully took over, the Warriors have been one of the most active teams on the trade market. They have kept everything to themselves and most of their moves were never forseen by many beatwriters and hardcore fans. From acquiring Davis, Jackson, Harrington and recently Wright, many of these moves were never mentioned in rumors and literally came out of nowhere. When Mully first came on board, we ALL knew that the Warriors needed a SuperStar and so what did he do?
He acquired Davis for a sandwich and some pickles on the side! When we knew "DunMurphy" weren't the answers to our playoff run and thought we would never be able to get rid of their contracts, Mully did exactly the opposite and pulled a rabbit out of his hat and traded both their contracts. When we thought we didn't have enough money to resign Ellis/Beidrins and needed help down low, Mully traded Richardson for Wright and the $10 Million TPE.
A lot of fans like myself are wondering why the Warriors are so 'quiet' during the offseason and many fans and national writers are criticizing the Warriors for their lack of movement during the free agency period. I can understand why they would be upset and criticized, but if you really take a look at how Mully and the Warriors operate, that's exactly what he wants and this is where my gut feeling comes to play. I can't imagine a better time for a 'big move' to happen within the next couple weeks with all the flexibility the Warriors have.
We know the Warriors need another big on the floor that can rebound, score in the low post and defend monsters such as Duncan and Boozer. We know that Davis has 2 years left on his contract and Nelly won't coach beyond this year and maybe next year unless he coaches a contender for the championship. And lastly, we all know Mully likes to operate under the radar and shock the basketball world.
So what does this all mean? Does this mean KG is coming to the Bay? Does this mean we're keeping our roster intact and just adding a few bigs down low who slightly improve our playoff chances? Who knows, but my gut feeling tells me something BIG is about to happen that will shock the Warriors Nation and we're all about to find out.
After writing this, maybe this diary is about KG ;) or maybe not!
What do you think?

But
But I do have to agree with you. It feels like they're stocking up on depth players right now because they know that the big trade is gonna deplete the bench. Resigning Azubuike, drafting Belinelli, possibly resigning Pietrus for cheap? That's a little more guard depth than we actually need. Getting Wright, drafting Lasme, offering Powell a contract, possibly signing Perovic?? That's an excess of big men as well.
Exactly!
There's a lot of depth here and there's not enough playing time for a lot of them to develop and play. So if you were Minnesota, or some other NBA team and saw the amount of pieces and flexibility the Warriors had, what NBA GM wouldn't want to discuss a deal with them?
"All I can say is wow!"
YUP
Indiana Again?
They seem to like to deal.
Both sides still seem happy with the last trade.
Indiana wants to trade a highly paid, strong playing PF.
The Warriors need one.
It's too quiet about that for me. I wonder...

i really don't think there's any chance in hell
I loved our draft this year, i love our flexibility, and i love where our franchise is going but it looks like we'll have to wait for Mullin to make his move. We have the flexibility to do almost ANYTHING as long as the imagination is there and the other team isn't in our division...
By the way, Pree mentioned something about Mullin inquiring about another disgruntled player (not KG)...Other than say, Artest, what other disgruntled players are out there at good value?

Kobe...
I don't think the Lakers would pull the trigger even if we had the best deal available simply because of who and where we are...Southern California would erupt in anger.... :)
But yeah, i agree....I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Who else is disgruntled? JO? AK? Brand maaaybe (problem: division rival)? The rest of the Pacers rosters now that they're teammates with DunMurphy? The Mavericks? It seems like the angriest and most disappointed people in the league are either in our division or have played us in the playoffs...Karma is a sweet, sweet bitch.

I agree
Also, I think you bring up an excellent point with AK. He would be such an excellent fit for our team, and given the fact that he sucked last year and cried in front of media cams, along with his hefty contract, I would expect his stock to have dropped considerably. I think Kirilenko could be acquired for Harrington straight up.
Would anyone else make this deal? Would the 10 mil exception work with this? Do you honostly believe that AK is finished and would not flourish like a he did a couple years ago on a new environment like the Warriors?

actually...
It seems to me that Harrington would fit the mold of a Mehmet Okur, as a skilled big man who can stretch the defense and front some other big guys down low...
Is there any reason to think that Sloan wouldnt like Harrington?

Harrington was too soft for Nellie
I could see Utah being tempted by a big-guard like Richardson (who we no longer have) or anything involving Brandan Wright (he's light-skinned enough, right?).

relax...
I think he is an excellent post defender however, and does another excellent job switching, rotating on defense and locking up C's with double teams.
His outside shot really creates different opportunities for our gaurds, given that he draws the opposing big man out to contest 22 ft. jumpers. He also allows Andris more breathing room down low due to this outside skill.
However, his outside shot could deem interchangable if Belinelli translates, and if we still add another shooter, or retain Barnes.
Hence the needs of rebounding and protection still serve as our need.
Could you even imagine the protection and rebounding a range a trio of Kirilenko, Biedrins, and Wright would provide. Also, the timing would seem suitable while AK has 4 remaining years on his contract, theoretically allowing Wright a window of 3 years to emerge as the star many believe he will be, thus making AK a worthy expiring contract for the remaining year.
AK is the kind of versatile, mobile, athletic, rebounding, shotblocking, and when he's confident, shooting big man Don Nelson loves.
I understand that Harrington played a key part of our success last year, that cant be argued, but I would rather have Kirilenko, he is capable of just too much, and his stock seems to have dropped considerably. Its just an idea. Nobody is saying Harrington's a bad player, you just have to consider different opportunities that could allow you to improve.

I can't believe he's not butter (better?)
- Nelson basically said it on one of his many Razor and Mr. T interviews on KNBR. He mentions how he loves Al as a person and player and that he has all these tools to be a successful 4 but doesn't put it together.
- I don't know where the link is but I've heard it mentioned many times that Nelson said that Al probably won't be starting next year. He's also the most skilled 4 on the team. So why isn't he starting and why are so many of us drooling over a Gooden or a Varejao?
- He did not SINGLEHANDEDLY shut down Yao. He hustled and he had a LOT of help defense and guys rotating. Shutting down Yao was a team effort although Harrington handled himself well.
5) Soft players tend to disappear in the rough and tumble playoffs. Harrington had a good game 1 and 3 against the Jazz because he was hitting quite a few treys. And i know he increased his strength, but physically he has the size to be a Boozer or Brand. So why isn't he? He's a finesse player (which Nellie loves) but he's not a consistent and hardy enough 4 for even Nellie to play him when it counts. So not only is he not a physically tough player but he may lack a certain mental toughness to stay consistent in the playoffs (he has no excuse like Monta).
Jax is a twig, but he bleeds toughness which is partly why Nellie was willing to stick him at the 4 throughout most of the playoffs.
6) 10fold? A little prone to hyperbole there eh?

I didnt say his jumper,
What I meant by working on his mid-range game, I meant that he needs to:
- Develop some decent face up moves that would allow him to take slower defenders to the rim effectively.
- Practice shooting off the dribble, rather than catching and shooting. Practice pulling up after dribbling left, right, forward, and back.
- Work towards mastering the triple threat. This would be such a great tool for Al because of his quickness, along with his ability to shoot. His quickness would allow him to really earn some spacing, enabling him to take advantage of big men, and shoot over smaller forwards.
- Perfect the turn-around jumper. I have seen him execute some pretty fade-aways after spinning off oponents. If he can grow more confident with his back to the basket out to 15 feet, than he can really keep some bigger guys guessing as far as the fadeaway, or the drive. This could really earn him alot of trips to the line. He needs to focus on some go to moves and pump fakes. He rushes alot of shots and gets alot of them blocked.

KB/KG v. JO/AK
AK-47 and JO, exciting as they are, are not franchise-type talents. They'd certainly improve us, but they're still more complements than cornerstones. Chances of either of them teaming with BD to lead us anywhere near the promised land: very, very remote.
On the other hand, AK-47 and JO do appear to be eminently available, so if we can get either of them them for a song (say, the TPE or Harrington, or even Foyle plus a #1 pick) I'd probably go for it. Can't say I'd be thrilled about it though. I see them both as kind of midway between Gooden and KG.
Basically, if we can't get Kobe or KG, I'd just as soon give our leftover minutes at PF to Brandan Wright and give up a few early-season wins for the chance to develop a cheap, young, homegrown star at PF.
by Sleepy Freud on Jul 27, 2007 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions
I pretty much agree with everything you said
I don't think that JO or AK are franchise talents either. Honestly, I'm not even sure how excited i'd be to land JO. I'd rather have BWrightFuture get more minutes too.
However, I wouldn't mind getting AK on the CHEAP if we couldn't swing a deal for KG. Mullin has a good track record for reviving the careers of disgruntled players and Nelson would love to start AK at Center and Point Guard.
I'm curious to see how Mullie plays out the rest of this summer. I haven't heard a rumor in the papers for a while...Something's brewing.
by sadleavy on Jul 27, 2007 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes, Ak rather than J.O.
JO's salary is worth 20 mil with 2 yrs. left...
I agree with you guys about Jermaine O'Neal along with a new n improved Kirilenko, in that while KG would put us in contention for a championship, JO and company would probably put us in contention for a divisional title...
But the whole point of trading for AK over O'Neal is that Andre would cost us a considerably less price, in terms of what we'd be giving up on our end. We all have seen what he is capable of doing, and showed flashes of that player during the 2nd rd. last year. If Mullin can convince Sloan on Harrington, then I think the rest is really history.
Sarunas would seem to fit in perfectly well with Sloan's philosophy, given that he is a big, disciplined, experienced point that runs the pick n roll, plays hard with durability, and can make you pay when you leave him open. It would not be hard to get Sloan sold on Sarunas.
Throw in next year's first round pick, and you can honostly speculate from both sides why this would be a beneficial trade. Realistically, the Warriors are perfect suitors for an AK-47 because of the mentioned flexibility that next to no other teams have at this point...
Who else would be able to trade for a 13 mil dollar disgruntled player?(Baron Davis)...
I guess Im a little more optimistic about AK than the next guy, because it would be easy to give him a jump start and send him in the proper direction given our open court style of course. His speed, length, and overall athleticism would be enough for anyone to receive passes for easy buckets, which are said to be key to building confidence back up particularly to bigs and wings... I also think that Nelson's more of a players coach and would really make AK feel like he belongs..
Alot of you might laugh and tell me to stop smoking the rock, but I truly believed that last year, we could have beaten ANYONE any given night... It was just a matter of our regulars (BD,JR,Jax) showing up and each giving you 18+, along with the X factor (Beans, wonderboy,TMNT,Air,Barnes) having a big night as well... and you could always count on us playing good defense more than less...
With that said, I honostly dont know how much more we need to get a shot at a championship... The fact that the Cavs made it there tells you ALOT about the East...
It seems that the only ones standing in our way are an aging but excellent Spurs club, the Suns, and the Jazz... I aint scared of the Mavs...or the rockets.
One last thing about AK, just to paint a picture for all those enthusiasts...
Can you imagine the amount of cheating our gaurds can do on defense if we had Biedrins, Kirilenko, AND Wright guarding the basket? In the same lineup???? The thought of the potential weak side help just made me jizz myself...
The possibilities and defensive schemes Nelson could conjure due to this new avenue of shotblocking mayhem would be endless. Not to mention, that Wright, along with the Balkan mountains can ALL run the ball up the court after a collected block or rebound. Their speed would allow them to do anything and everything, whether its a defensive switch on the opposite side, or catching an alley after sprinting 60 feet...
That kind of blitzing defense would be enough to dominate any team... Id be a happy Warrior fan if we made that trade. Give me this line up
Baron/Pierce
Ellis/Belinelli
Jackson/Azubuiki/Pietrus or Barnes
Kirilenko/Wright/Lasme
Biedrins/Powell/Foyle/Perovic
The key to this would be keeping our young nucleas, along with the points mentioned
Considering the deal, if we were to include our 1st round pick, you can always look at the bright side in this way.
Theroetically speaking, many believed that Pierre Pierce would have been a lottery pick if not for his legal troubles right? I mean, scouts DID project his stock to be that high...
Since we acquired him, in a cosmic sense you could make the argument that he WAS our first round pick for next year, since he was practically a gimme since nobody got him, and we did for NOTHING. Does anyone understand what I mean by this? We never used a pick on him, but we did PICK him up... in the same effect we picked up Barnes without using a pick, thus expending a pick all of the sudden becomes that much more barable if it allows you to get where you want to go... feel me?

AK cannot come to GSW
AK would have to put up with endless crap for getting posterized repeatedly and dramatically on a daily basis - it would be almost inhumane to subject him to that
on the other hand, he'd be assured that those same guys weren't dunk'n on his dome in games so maybe ...

I think plugging in AK at thet 4 instead of TMNT
Of course, I'd much rather prefer KG but if we could somehow put together a cheapo package (TMNT and Cabbages) for him, then I'd do it in a heartbeat. I don't think it would make us a contender like KG would, but I do think we'd be a playoff lock (and right now we aren't really).
There has literally been NO talk about an AK trade to the Dubs, maybe that means Mullin has something put together. :-) Then again, you could say that about anyone....

Injury problem
One thing that I don't see emphasized about O'neal is his injury history. We worried about Baron last year and though it seems like summer makes us forget that he's unlikely to be available for 35+ minutes for 82 games, he's unlikely to be available for 35+ minutes for 82 games. Over the last three seasons, O'neal has missed one game fewer than Baron, and that includes his ineffective injured play at the end of last season. He's played less than 20 more minutes than Baron, and we know Baron's availability is a huge concern. What's the odds that a big man entering his 30s with an injury history all of a sudden being able to show up for work 82 times next year?
ok
However, he does only have 2 years left...not too bad.

First off...i don't think they'd ever do that
And second, I really don't think that JO would work for Nellieball. I remember Rick Carlisle mentioning in an interview that they don't run because they stop their entire offense for O'Neal. They wait for him to set up position and then they run the halfcourt game. JO wouldn't even get to halfcourt before Monta or Baron ran it full court and took it to the rim.

Wow
As far as AK goes, his name hasnt come up. I dont understand why because personally I think he would EXCEL with Nellie. And it seems Utah wants him out. I would love for him to be a backup plan to KG. And maybe even a hair more than Garnett if it means not giving up Wright and Ellis. But Garnett will THRIVE in this syste as well. Imagine Garnett BETTER than he is? WOW.
Lastly, something is definitely in the air. I think we all find out after Aug 6th. Then we are flexible again. I still firmly believe its for Garnett. With Baily, Pierce, etc as roster fillers for us after we dump so many players for KG.
It is an exciting time. I think Gooden is intriguing but is a way backup plan. I feel Mullin is exploring before making his decision. He knows Beidrins may be that piece to actually land Garnett. So how does he make it easier? Gooden may be that guy. Varejo in my mind would be better. But thats all debatable.
Go DUBS.

Nellie would absolutely LOVE
Now that J-Rich is gone, I can only dream--though we DO still have that trade exception from Charlotte. If AK is STILL being shopped we would be STUPID not to consider it. He is a BEAST in the low post, rebounding and blocking shots, he can push the ball up the floor (Utah was using him as a "point forward" for long stretches of the playoffs), and, at one point in his career, he had a decent outside shot. He would absolutely flourish in Nellie's system.
But I think all the parties involved both know that, which is why a deal will probably never happen. Unless, that is, AK can discharge a firearm outside of a strip club/set up an interstate dog-fighting ring, etc. I think Utah would like to move him, but not so much that they would make one of their West rivals a contender in the process...

Thanks for the thoughts on JO
How much of an inside presence is KG? I'm asking because I've seen 2 quarters of him play in his whole career. At that time he was a mid range rebounder extrordinaire, not a banger inside, and a jump shooter like J Rich. And he was 7' tall.
It sure seems now like the deal is for KG and it involves Biedrins. With Kosta hanging around summer league and rumored to be signed for next year as back up center...someone's going away at that position. I doubt it's Foyle.
