Interesting....
There are obvious questions as to whether or not Boston is now a legit contender, which begs the question, how come he didnt come out west, or to a stronger team?
I guess Danny Ainge was the only GM willing/able to trade pieces away to acquire KG?
Thank goodness the KG rumors to the Bay can end...
GSW will be a great team for years to come.

I hope we have something else up our sleeve, if not - we may have moved J-Rich for nothing and may be on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Maybe we can call up our old boy Larry and see if the Pacers are interested in dealing us Jermaine O'Neal for more crap...

DOUBT IT
They would more than likely make it real deep into the playoffs if all 3 of them are clicking and healthy, but not if it's just 2 of them! I'm not trying to wish any injuries on them, but AINGE is an idiot! He just gave up the team's future! Not just in the young players, but 2 1st round draft picks?
All I gotta say is HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Ok well it's not final yet, but HAHAHAHAHAHAH @ AINGE!!!

TOTALLY
Don't get me wrong though, I'd take that trio in a heartbeat, but not at the expense of the future! Everyone was complaining when we were talking about giving up ELLIS or maybe BIEDRINS w/ WRIGHT and some throw-ins for salary cap purposes, but look at who BOSTON's giving up! Not just the players, but supposedly 2 future 1st round draft picks! That's insane! If they don't make it anywhere less than the NBA FINALS, I think that would automatically make the trade a bust! Each year after will just be more and more difficult because AINGE has pretty much handicapped the team's immediate future w/ this trade!
GOOD LUCK to them...they'll need it! Now let's all focus on what our team needs to do to get back into the playoffs, past the 2nd round and possibly even make it to the NBA FINALS! Maybe we'll meet the CELTS there! That would be classic!!!

not sure how this is related to KG
We can sign/trade for someone using the TPE, up to $10M.
Pietrus, we can give big money to if we wanted to (but we're not that stupid), since we drafted him we can pay him.
Thats about it.

Word.
For plan C, I'm going with my boy Sadleavy: see what it takes to pry AK-47. And while we're at, what the heck, let's try and pry Artest as well. Sounds like a lethal mix personality-wise, but I'd pray the force of the Boom would hold it all together. They should both available for cheap .. I'd hope some combo of Harrington, the TPE, pix, and one of Monta or Wright could get it done. A front line of Artest/AK-47/Biedrins would be badass defensively...
Sticking with what we have is like plan Q for me. I'd just as soon blow it up trade Baron to Atlanta (Josh Smith + $$$) or Milwaukee (Yi + $$$)...

But can we leave Yi in Milwuakee? I'm not buying what Chad Ford and China are selling. Until we trade for him of course...then...in true homer fashion, i will immediately hype up his game.

by kenntoe on Jul 31, 2007 12:42 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow, Sleepy!
I think Mullin is bold. He's proven it with big trades and the pursuit of Garnett, but dealing for Artest might be a lot to swallow even for him. I mean, the Warriors would have to triple their PR staff. We'd be like a team of Barry Bonds, or bad guy wrestlers.
But combining AK-47 and Artest could be lethal and is probably doable. Although he rebounded in the playoffs (particuarly against the Warriors), apparently Sloan was done with AK last season. I would guess that he could still be had in a trade.
The probem with Kirilenko, is that he is a long term luxury tax buster. He's owed a wopping $63 million over the next four seasons. However, I think Harrington and Jasicavicius could get the job done. For Artest, the trade exemption and a 1st rounder should do it. The Warriors could stay under the luxury tax with that team. They'd be competitive and would definitely make the playoffs, if they could all stay away from being suspended.
It would a gutsy move, but I like your thinking, Sleepy.

LOL
KG would have been good for 2-3 yrs max given that he or Baron didn't get hurt during the regular season. After that you're at step 1 trying to put a franchise back together with the two main pieces broken or retiring.
I like this thread b/c you got a bunch of people in a panic and then some all down like the world is coming to an end for the Warriors. Something to take into consideration is that b/c of the big trade that went down w/ the Pacers, Jackson and Harrington can only be in better shape this season to play the style of ball, especially Harrington. Biedrins and Ellis can only get better and with the addition of Belinelli and Wright (i hope he shows up to play), the team has a new face lift. I have a good feeling about this season, as long as I don't see Pietrus show up to camp... but this might be a blessing in disguise for the franchise.

In every sensibility and every point you made...
People on here are still acting as if the world's flat and the Warriors are about to fall off...
People say that we arent going to make the playoffs now that J-Rich is gone. But they seem to forget that last year Dunleavy, Murphy, and Diogu were on the team for the majority of the season.
Those days are over, we have a new team now. Put the gun down, your gonna be O K.
This is a bold statement but, I think the improvement of our young core(AB,Ellis,Azu,Powell), plus the addition of Wright, Belinelli, and even Lasme, will overcompensate the loss of Jason...
The improvement of Monta and Biedrins, Im so anxious to watch them each have another break-out year, to see them expand their experience and hone in even closer on their skills. Their so young, and just so damn good.
Watching Belinelli play with that range and Basketball IQ made me go numb for a minute.
Azubuiki looked like a confident swingman that I could see turning into a crunch time scorer for us in the near future with his fearless drives and aggressiveness with the ball. He will get us back from behind in a lot of 20 point games...
Wright is what he is. A potential star. He either will be a Superstar, or a good player but never a bust. His natural abilities are just too rare and advanced for him to be a nobody in this league.
Pierre Pierce looks like another Matt Barnes spark plug.
Powell is a solid back-up. A shooting, rebounding big man. I was impressed to see him putting the ball on the floor and creating for himself. Also running the ball up the court after rebounds. Impressive. He's better than what people give him credit for, nobody seems to talk much about him.
Hopefully Barnes is re-signed, I got mad love for the man. And yanking Pietrus back to training camp kicking and screaming should make us one of the deepest teams in the L now.
AND we havnt even completed our off-season, or used the 10 mil exception yet on another impact player. The suspense wont last, enjoy it.
STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT. The truth is, the West IS the same. Maybe even weaker. Sure, Portland has made strides, but we are still the better team by far.
Oden will foul out of every game if they play him more than 35 mins, and Duran and Green are going to need at least 2 years to take the Sonics to the playoffs.
The Lakers are toast. They obviously just brought in Fisher to help keep Kobe settled. He and Derek got a tight friendship. Hahaha I love to see how sprung those losers are on that crybaby. Let them lose their souls and waste their money. We'll get better.
How can you not be excited about this young Warrior team? If everything goes according to plan, we're going to be good for a very long time. You should be thanking Mullin and Nelson right now for putting us in that position, rather than pissing yourself, waking up with cold sweats from having those damn J-Rich nightmares again...hahaha

Something else will get done...
Why has nothing else happened this offseason? Because we were sitting on all of our assets for a KG trade. So now that we can't have him Mullin will work the phones until we can work something out. There are too many big guys out there that we could snatch up with all of our young assets. AK47, Camby, Artest (rebounding/defense) etc are all reasonable. Maybe we can grab Josh Smith out of Atlanta with all the problems there (probably not).

I wanted KG...
I believe Boston is mortgaging their future for a fairly uncertain present. Yes, they will make the play-offs. but wihout a decent point or center, I'm not sure they will even get past Chicago, Detroit, or Cleveland. And whatever Boston does, it better be in the next two years. They have six expensive knees that aren't getting any younger.
The dubs still have to fill that 4 spot with some muscle. That could be Wright in 2-3 years but I will hope they find someone like Brand or Smith in the next 12 months and use some of that new-found flexibility to make a push while Baron is still Baron.

Celtics have a shot at a title the next 2-3 years
I guess that makes Ainge an "idiot" and the we-shoulda-got-KG crowd a bunch of suicidal panickers.
Who has a better title shot than Boston right now? San Antonio, maybe Phoenix ... that's about it.
All the "we'll be fine" stuff is pretty meaningless. Of course we'll be fine, if being fine means winning 38-46 games and being a fun team to watch. We could easily miss the playoffs. We'll probably be one of 5-6 teams competing for a #7 or #8 seed and a first round exit. No NBA analyst will predict any higher than that. (Yeah, yeah, they're all a bunch of haters...)
The stick-with-what-we-have line might be more convincing if either Nellie or Mullin had ever made a statement indicating this was the roster they intended, or at least attempting to give some BS reasons why we're now a more exciting team than least year. As it is, it's pretty clear they're not that thrilled with it, and are still looking for a plan B.
So who's funnier, the bridge-jumpers, or the graveyard-whistlers who don't seem to mind that Nellie could still retire any day and that BD's shot at a title with GS just went out the window?
by Sleepy Freud on Jul 31, 2007 5:09 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea
Who has a better shot than Boston to make the playoffs? Well first you should compare apples to apples, split the eastern and western conference. The western contenders are the Mavs, Suns, Spurs. The eastern contenders... well there are no contenders so its a toss up. Given that the Celtics stay healthy and their team chemistry is cool throughout the regular season, if they make the playoffs, they'll get to the 2nd round at least. But the only teams they'll have to beat is Chicago, Cavs, Detroit, and Miami. Not that those teams aren't very good.
As far as being sore about not getting KG, the Celtics dealt the best offer, what can you do? If the warriors would have put AB on the table with Ellis and Wright, and we would have got KG, then there would be 1/2 the people on here butthurt about that. And then if KG would have got hurt while on the Warriors, they other half would be moaning when AB and Ellis were doing good things else where.
As far as KG making or breaking the chances of the warriors going to the championship, well he could have helped them get there, but he's not a miracle man. He can't fix baron's busted up and broken body, but he would have done a lot for team morale.
I sometimes think maybe last season was a bad thing for some warrior fans. As soon as the warriors got into the playoffs people started to get greedy. It wasn't good enough that the warriors actually had a decent regular season and made the playoffs, some fans caught a case of the Kobe, "gotta win now" syndrome, regardless of the fact that the Warriors have just got their first real taste of the post season. Its ok to have aspirations for a team, but including some form of reason into them might prove to be useful.

What can you do?
It's deflating to go from dreams of a championship to middle-of-the-packville. Let the pro-KG crowd be sad/crestfallen/miffed/pissed for a few days, free from your psychiatric diagnoses. Not everyone can be as smart and reasonable as you.
by Sleepy Freud on Jul 31, 2007 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
carpe diem... or not
I do like our young cats but also realize the stars had to align a certain way (after a dozen of "maybe next years") in order for us to reach the playoffs last year and this coming season would demand an even tighter alignment, with our chances dramatically increasing if we added KG, one of the most dominant, consistent players to ever play his position. With KG in the Dubs equation, making the playoffs is a given (which is no longer the case at the moment) but we also do some serious damage possibility into the WCF and beyond
With no KG, Nelson may not be back. It's assumed Baron will be his playoff-enthusiastic-grinning-ear-to-ear self all season, but will he still be as inspired to play with no JR, now no KG, being surrounded only by young guns and in a midst of 5-6 game losing streak?
Wright might be 'the next' Bosh or KG... or no more special as say, Chris Gatling (of course I'm hoping beyond hope for the former). But really, "how many 'the nexts' never realize that expectation?" I guess that's a question Wright's left to answer while some fans sit patiently but with pursed lips and the words, "BUST! I TOLD YOU FIRST!!" ready to erupt at the slightest indicator he might not deliver as expected
We had a shot to land the proven thing, a low-post, shotblocking, chest-thumping Hall-of-Famer well within reach, but now no more -that's just plain painful. As long as I can remember, being a Warrior fan has meant to be on the "outside-looking-in" when it comes to the elite, powerhouse teams of the NBA. It would've changed with KG's arrival. Now we're back behind the glass saying, "one day. Just wait and see..." again and that gets old really, really fast

they wont win a title
You would expect everything to run smoothly right? You would expect those three guys to gel in one and turn into champs. You would expect KG to roam the inside while Pierce moves somewhere between, and Allen sways along the outside...
It all sounds good, but the truth of the matter is that Ray Allen is not a star player anymore. Hes 32 years old and he has ankle problems on both feet. He doesnt play defense and he doesnt stay healthy. With so many great scorers playing his position, how are is he going to man up against some of the leagues best with bad wheels come "championship time"? Who's going to be replacing him off the bench? Will Allen be satisfied taking less shots?
Paul Pierce played 47 games last year due to injury. Both he and Allen are earning top dollar for the next 3-4 years. When supposedly their "window" will be closed in 2 years.
Asking these 3 guys to win a championship on their own while 2 of them didnt play for practically half the season last year, is asking alot.
They have nobody coming off the bench, they have older veterans coming off injuries that will get tired, and theyre locked up with the cap for the next 2 years at least...
And to answer your question, YES I do think the Spurs, Suns, Mavericks, Jazz, and even the Bulls, can and will beat them. They have established teams with great coaches that have built and kept their core over the years. You have to understand how great teams like the Spurs work, my friend.
I would bet on the Spurs against Team USA any day of the week. You can always throw stars together in the same line-up and expect them to dominate. But domination is a team effort, thats why USA got whooped against the Euro's.
Lastly, you have no idea at all really as to what we have in Wright yet. We all have had an exciting glimpse at Belinelli and even Pierce. But until your sure what you have with Wright, Theres no need to start jumping off the bridge like you are.
If the kid shows hes got mad game, you will be singing an entirely different tune. Why do you think its rational to say that we cant win a championship just because we dont have KG?
I still think we're in a slightly better position than we were last year, and even still we have the power to make a big deal for another impact player. Of course Mullin and Nelson havnt said that this is the team, because theyre not done yet. Just hold on and see what happens. You should be happy KG didnt make it to the Lakers. THEN it would have been curtains. Hope ya feel better!

They just might win a title
He just turned 32, and his PER over the last 5 years is as follows: 21.3, 21.7, 20.9, 22.2, 21.6. Yup, he's clearly falling off a cliff. As for his ankles, he had bone spurs, had them removed, and is apparently 100% recovered. Over the past five years, he's been much, much more durable than Baron Davis, for example; and is probably the purest outside shooter in the NBA. Marco Belinelli dreams of being Ray Allen.
His first-ever major injury, from which he has fully recovered. Over the course of his career he's been one of the most durable NBA stars, and he's likely a better, more productive player than anyone the Warriors have had since Rick Barry, or at least since Run TMC.
Agreed that the supporting cast is woefully thin right now, but I think their roster is still very much a work in progress. They still have their MLE, and with that incredible core, the clout to draw more veteran talent in search of rings. How much better would you feel about their chances if they were able to add, say, Brevin Knight (or Boykins) and Chris Webber (or PJ Brown)? It's the true stars that you can't just add. and they have three of them locked in place.
Thanks for the wisdom, mentor. I agree that chemistry and "gelling time" are underrated factors in great teams; but it's interesting to see how you apply a double-standard when it comes to our Dubs, who will somehow magically weave the young kids into our championship core. In the case of the Cs, I think given what consummate professionals the Big 3 are, a full pre-season and maybe 20 regular-season games should be sufficient to get them running like a well-oiled green machine, assuming reasonable health. And yes, it's fair to assume reasonable health; if you don't, why should we assume it for guys like Nash and Duncan? All the NBA championship contenders are one serious injury away from being knocked out of contention.
I never say "can't." I've always held to "extremely unlikely." There are 29 other teams in the NBA, all of whom are trying to win just as hard as we are. There are only 3 or 4 teams with realistic title shots. Honestly, I don't see how our odds are significantly better than those of any other middle-of-the-pack team: Memphis, New Orleans, Portland, Cleveland, New Jersey, Washington, Lakers, Clippers etc. etc. You think otherwise 'cos you're a fan, but I'm pretty sure objective NBA observers (Las Vegas oddsmakers, e.g.) will lump us with that bunch.
Not jumping off any bridges. I love Wright's potential, too. As I said, I think we'll be a fun team to watch, and I'm totally looking forward to the season. It's just a little disappointing to go back into the mob of middle-tier teams fighting for a #6-8 playoff seed after we had a real shot at being one of the elite.
I'm fine. Thanks for the concern. ;-D
by Sleepy Freud on Jul 31, 2007 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ya they could...
I love all these players mind you, and I believe in them. But Its hard for me to believe that these 3 guys, 2 of them on the other side of 30, can just come together and win it all in one year, with no help at all.
Even by next year, it would be interesting to see the coaches bring in enough talent to let the geisers rest for a bit without getting blown out by a western con. powerhouse.
I dont think theres a double standard. I simply think that we have a great coach and more time to gel together and win, rather than the 2-3 the Celtics have to win a championship.
I agree, they have a much better chance at winning the whole thing than we do now. But until we actually see what we have in these kids, its really tough to make such a statement, because supposedly sky's the limit, right?
I think people are really getting greedy with the glory. Don't fall in that trap. We just made the playoffs since the early 90's so why the rush to make us title contenders?
The Warriors were really throwing dirt in our face for a long time, with the whole "rebuilding stage." I believe now, is the true rebuilding stage, and we should go about things with patience and precision. We will get there soon, dont worry about it so much. Just delight in the fact that it feels good to not be losers anymore. When some laughs at your bumper sticker, flips you off and says, "THE WARRIORS SUCK!" You can now, honostly just say, "no they don't."
I didnt mean to sound like some know it all dr. bastard about it... my bad

just curious
i know im kicking a dead horse, but this is just for fun. because with our proposed package including beans, monta and wright plus more seems like we were outbidding ourselves (although this offer was never really confirmed just seemingly "accurate speculation")
don't get me wrong im partly relieved we didn't give up half our team for KG but still torn if this is what it took to get him b/c IMO it was a steal for unproven/future talent and expiring contracts/ cap space.
by hyphybird on Jul 31, 2007 9:08 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
we never offered Beans, and it was a steal
Beans does not compare to Jefferson. Biedrins' ceiling is likely something like 12-15 points per game, 10-12 boards, and 1-3 blocks. Jefferson is a potentially dominating force - 20-25 points, with similar boards and blocks. It's like comparing a semi-star to a star - Biedrins can be a great role player, probably never an all-star; and Jefferson MAY be the kind of guy that makes 6-8 all-star teams.
don't feel relieved that we didn't make the deal. feel bumbed. we lost J-Rich and didn't get KG. we have no shot at the championship. Monta Ellis is bumbed for being shopped around all summer, as may be Al Harrington. we could have been like the Phoenix Suns a decade or so ago, when they got Barkley and went all the way to the finals; instead, at best, we are like the Golden State Warriors a decade or so ago.
a team we love, but not the team to beat.
