Yi & Senior China Basketball Team loses to U19 Team USA + Dallas Mavs SL Team

Yi played against the U19 basketball team a coupld days ago. He played 23 minutes scoring 8 of his 15 points from the free throw line, and 14 of his points came from the 4th quarter. As I said earlier, Yi is not playing against players who are of the caliber of those who are in our NCAA today. Yi played against players who were 19 years of age and younger, which is also his age group.

China's Yi Jianlian, who recently was the No. 6 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, got things going in the fourth quarter to keep China in the game. With Yi scoring 14 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, China cut the U.S. advantage to 10, 70-60, with 5:42 to play in the game, but could get no closer as Porter made his fifth 3-pointer of the game to turn away the rally and help seal the USA 91-75 victory.

China Loses to Dallas 105-100, Despite Little Help from Yi, Sun

by Arthur Volbert - Jul 3, 2007

China lost to the Dallas Mavericks Summer League team tonight in a close game in Dallas despite a disappointing performance from Yi Jianlian and little help from Sun Yue. Wang Zhizhi (214-C-79) led China with 28 points and Zhu Fangyu scored 17. Yi had 11 points on 3 of 9 shooting. "Just the second game from missing three months," Yi said, noting that he just rejoined the national team.

Despite the hype that Yi has gotten from all the people not only here on this website, but also from the many various journalists who had jumped on the bandwagon of Yi coming to our Golden State franchise, it would have seemed that from his display of play against our U19 team and against the Dallas Mavericks Summer League Team, that Yi is at best an average player. I certainly believed that he was not going to be as good as everyone had though he would become, and from a post I had written before, he does not compete against the same level of of athleticism as we have here in the NCAA.

Still want Yi?

I'm not saying Yi's going to be a superstar
but it's WAY too early to make this sort of judgment about his career.

Also don't forget how pitiful Yao looked the first 15 games or so of his NBA career. It's way too early to judge someone- even POB for that matter. I think the POB pick was foolish because there was no need to take on another project, but that doesn't mean he can't turn the corner and end up being a solid pro a few years down the line (although I doubt it).

But i decided to just let people see what they were rooting for.

I think you should put a Baron Davis beard on that warrior! looks like he's already got a mean crossover dribble?

Amen
it's only 2 games after a 3 month layoff, I wouldn't rush to judgement yet. It's not like he was going to come in and average 35 points and 16 boards a game, even though some have hyped him up like that. I don't think he'll ever be a superstar but he should end up being a nice roleplayer for a team.

I agree
Why are people making judgments so early.  Do people really want to eat their own words later on down the road?  If everyone made judgments so quickly, nothing would ever get done.

Give people a chance to prove themselves and don't go by what you have seen in 1 or 2 games.  Try one or two seasons.  I'm always going to reference the AB example for all the naysayers.  Just b/c someone may not be living up to the hype that OTHER people have built up, doesn't mean he won't be something special once he develops himself in the nba.

well he is playing against high school players
basically and i guess these U19 players havnt been playing basketball either? i think you can always find a place to play basketball and besides have you played basketball... if you have a shot it just doesnt leave you your skills are still there and especially for his age things should come back fairly quickly i dont think you could play mediocre 2 games in a row if youre supposed to be someone more than average... plus this guy has been professional for how many years now and hes losing against highschool player? ehh i dunno guys seems to me like this is gunna be at best.. just ok.

If we want to put this into perspective
Ok, well I'm not arguing for Yi here, but to be realistic about the situation this is what we're looking at.  High School players 19 yrs and younger right?  So we're talking about kids like Monta Ellis a couple years ago, Oden and Durant last year, Brandan Wright last year, I know this is a pretty decent list of players who are supposed to be top prospects, but age doesn't necessarily have to do with anything.  Look at Dunleavey and Murphy, they've been in the nba for awhile and they still suck balls.

He didn't play well against these kids, but his stats aren't all that hot in his league either if you ask me.  I think he'd be a good piece to add to a roster for an already built team, but building around him, not a good idea.  He's one of those guys that you wouldn't mind having, but you could live without.  I'm still interested to see how his game pans out in the nba.  Summer League starts tomorrow, i'm getting pumped up to watch the GSW play on saturday.

are we talking van horn
in NJ or after? the NJ Van Horn put up nice stats tho! anyone know why he started sucking so bad after getting traded?

my memory sucks
but i think it was cuz he got traded to philadelphia with Allen I'llbitchslapyowhiteass Iverson. Not sure though.

seriously man, only two games!
think about how many bad summer league games Mike Dunleavy had where the All American took 30+ shots to hit 20 points. And look how good he is now... ...oh wait... nevermind. it does seem too early to tell, granted his play hasn't been very convincing. how many rookies recently, aside from Lebron and Carmelo step in right away and go for 30? i'm sure in time we'll know for sure how in/effective he will be, though for some reason Dun's potential is like wine, where it seems to get better with age... i know there's tons of dun hate in this comment, i just can't get over how indiana is rebuilding their team around him and murphy.

by dj fuzzylogic on Jul 5, 2007 5:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

lol hahaha tru that with Dun and murph
but yea i wasnt saying that he was gunna be bad or anthing i was just saying average at best and i mean if he turns out better then good for him but thne again hes playing aganst kids who are in highschool or right out of highschool do u see where im coming from?

by jeppalepala on Jul 5, 2007 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And the fact that hes been playing professionally
thats also a thing that i thought he should have been playing better since he has all these little highlight tapes and a deal from nike if that catches your attention.. nike doesnt sign just anybody and im still wondering where or who is Yi? lol SHOW YOURSELF!

by jeppalepala on Jul 5, 2007 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh f'sho
i see what you're saying now. yea, i would def. expect a little more from him. lets hope he can get to Van Horn status!

Yi Hu?
is what I keep saying.  The Yi movement went south in a circling motion until it was all gone, or "dumped out" as John from Cincinnati would say.

lol hahaha
thank you i never really was much of a Yi fan.

Hell Yeah, I want Yi on the Warriors
but, he comes with some baggage. He's practically government property.

Statistically speaking, your low sample size...
does not justify such a conclusion.

It's actually amazing reading the criticisms about his ability, b/c they're the same as those that were spouted at Yao when he first arrived. Can't rebound, too soft, defensive liability..etc..etc.. They're valid, and in fact well documented on draftexpress.com.

The OP's support is valid but I believe that his end conclusion that Yi will be an "average player" at best based on 2 games is not. He's had good games against the US national team before.    All the scouts, even the critical ones agree that Yi has the tools to be great but how far along in his development and will he ever properly utilize the tools are subject to debate.

What I think will determine Yi's success is really what kind of work ethic he has and how his body hold up in the league.  If the guy has the same type of work ethic as Yao then most likely all the potential he has will be realized.  It took Yao 3 years to become the player he is today, give it some time before you peg him "an average player at best." I'm hoping that what I hear about Yi is correct in that the guy has the same type of desire and work ethic as Yao.  Like I said, potential is there,  universally agreed amongst scouts, but does the guy want to work hard?  If he does, I like his chances,  if he doesn't, well I'll be the first disappointed Yi supporter.

It's easier to be critic than a supporter b/c quite simply put, everyone has inherent flaws that can be easily pointed out.

Oh and to answer your last question, yeah still want Yi on the W's.  Only if we can't get KG though.  This team needs a potential 2nd star behind Baron and Yi's the type of big man that would thrive from Nelly's coaching.

Agreed
It's too early to project. But, it's always good to show your doubt in things. Like myself, I honestly believe this kid will be the Tskitishvili of this draft. I just hope he proves me wrong... just not when he plays against the Warriors.

by xbaywarrior on Jul 5, 2007 11:42 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yi Jianlian
I believe this fool is on his way to become a combo of Nikoloz Tskitishvili and Fran Vazquez. He's Vazquez for the fact that there's a possibility that he won't play for Milwaukee and eventually not wanna play in the NBA. He's Tskitishvili for the fact that he's a high draft pick who will suffer a horrible career. Let's also add in Steve Francis to the mix. He's Francis because he does not want to play for the Bucks, like Francis did when he was drafted by the then Vancouver Grizzlies. Yes, it's only been two games and it's best not to judge a player's performance in two games. Even if he did well, I would doubt that would showcase his real talents. The guy's still young and developing. He needs to take care of business on and off the court. If only those 1200+ Asian/Chinese in Milwaukee persuade to stay, he'll be okay. I don't think any team will wanna give up any value for him.

summer league stats
I was just checking some box scores.  he dropped 23 against the grizzlies team tonight.  Not too bad if you ask me considering the numbers all the other top 10 picks put up today.  Durant had 18, Oden last time I checked he had 4 pts.  But on to tomorrow...bigger and better.  Belinelli is set to play tomorrow, i just hope that I can watch the game as nba.com has been cock blocking me pretty bad.

Yi "began to fullfill the hype"
For those in this diary already proclaiming him a bust after 1 summer league game, check the recap of his game vs. the Grizz.
