Yi & Senior China Basketball Team loses to U19 Team USA + Dallas Mavs SL Team
Yi played against the U19 basketball team a coupld days ago. He played 23 minutes scoring 8 of his 15 points from the free throw line, and 14 of his points came from the 4th quarter. As I said earlier, Yi is not playing against players who are of the caliber of those who are in our NCAA today. Yi played against players who were 19 years of age and younger, which is also his age group.
China's Yi Jianlian, who recently was the No. 6 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, got things going in the fourth quarter to keep China in the game. With Yi scoring 14 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, China cut the U.S. advantage to 10, 70-60, with 5:42 to play in the game, but could get no closer as Porter made his fifth 3-pointer of the game to turn away the rally and help seal the USA 91-75 victory.

China Loses to Dallas 105-100, Despite Little Help from Yi, Sun
by Arthur Volbert - Jul 3, 2007
China lost to the Dallas Mavericks Summer League team tonight in a close game in Dallas despite a disappointing performance from Yi Jianlian and little help from Sun Yue. Wang Zhizhi (214-C-79) led China with 28 points and Zhu Fangyu scored 17. Yi had 11 points on 3 of 9 shooting. "Just the second game from missing three months," Yi said, noting that he just rejoined the national team.

Despite the hype that Yi has gotten from all the people not only here on this website, but also from the many various journalists who had jumped on the bandwagon of Yi coming to our Golden State franchise, it would have seemed that from his display of play against our U19 team and against the Dallas Mavericks Summer League Team, that Yi is at best an average player. I certainly believed that he was not going to be as good as everyone had though he would become, and from a post I had written before, he does not compete against the same level of of athleticism as we have here in the NCAA.
Still want Yi?

I'm not saying Yi's going to be a superstar
Also don't forget how pitiful Yao looked the first 15 games or so of his NBA career. It's way too early to judge someone- even POB for that matter. I think the POB pick was foolish because there was no need to take on another project, but that doesn't mean he can't turn the corner and end up being a solid pro a few years down the line (although I doubt it).

I agree
Give people a chance to prove themselves and don't go by what you have seen in 1 or 2 games. Try one or two seasons. I'm always going to reference the AB example for all the naysayers. Just b/c someone may not be living up to the hype that OTHER people have built up, doesn't mean he won't be something special once he develops himself in the nba.

If we want to put this into perspective
He didn't play well against these kids, but his stats aren't all that hot in his league either if you ask me. I think he'd be a good piece to add to a roster for an already built team, but building around him, not a good idea. He's one of those guys that you wouldn't mind having, but you could live without. I'm still interested to see how his game pans out in the nba. Summer League starts tomorrow, i'm getting pumped up to watch the GSW play on saturday.

Statistically speaking, your low sample size...
It's actually amazing reading the criticisms about his ability, b/c they're the same as those that were spouted at Yao when he first arrived. Can't rebound, too soft, defensive liability..etc..etc.. They're valid, and in fact well documented on draftexpress.com.
The OP's support is valid but I believe that his end conclusion that Yi will be an "average player" at best based on 2 games is not. He's had good games against the US national team before. All the scouts, even the critical ones agree that Yi has the tools to be great but how far along in his development and will he ever properly utilize the tools are subject to debate.
What I think will determine Yi's success is really what kind of work ethic he has and how his body hold up in the league. If the guy has the same type of work ethic as Yao then most likely all the potential he has will be realized. It took Yao 3 years to become the player he is today, give it some time before you peg him "an average player at best." I'm hoping that what I hear about Yi is correct in that the guy has the same type of desire and work ethic as Yao. Like I said, potential is there, universally agreed amongst scouts, but does the guy want to work hard? If he does, I like his chances, if he doesn't, well I'll be the first disappointed Yi supporter.
It's easier to be critic than a supporter b/c quite simply put, everyone has inherent flaws that can be easily pointed out.
Oh and to answer your last question, yeah still want Yi on the W's. Only if we can't get KG though. This team needs a potential 2nd star behind Baron and Yi's the type of big man that would thrive from Nelly's coaching.

Looks like all 3 of them had comparable performances.
