Report: Warriors signing Austin Croshere?

While the Warriors won't be getting dream acquisition Kevin Garnett, they appear ready to make their first dent in free agency. Golden State has been in talks with forward Austin Croshere, according to a league source, and is close to signing the 10-year veteran.

The 6-foot-10 Croshere averaged 3.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 11.9 minutes for Dallas last season after spending his first nine years in Indiana. He would give the Warriors some depth with the fate of their own free agents, Matt Barnes and Mickael Pietrus, still to be decided.

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2007/08/02/SP8KRBF5C1.DTL

Not really sure what to think about this. He does have range but other than that I personally think that the Warriors can do better and should get a backup point guard (Earl Boykins?). Also, Croshere should go for cheap so this might be a move to not spend much and hopefully get Barnes or Pietrus.

Thoughts?

Perovik Signed Wednesday /Croshere - today
http://www.insidebayarea.com/sports/ci_6528114

"The Warriors will get no such break on their deal with the 7-2, 240-pound Perovic, who was selected 38th overall two summers ago and signed off Wednesday on his deal."

"Duffy said the contract "shows a commitment to (Perovic)." It's believed Perovic will receive approximately $5 million over three years, although $1 million of that will go toward Perovic's buyout from his European club, Partizan Belgrade. The total buyout was $1.5 million; the Warriors, per league regulations, are allowed to pick up only $500,000 of that tab."

Chroshere

"Ten-year veteran forward Austin Croshere was expected to sign with Golden State on Thursday afternoon, a team source said. And the Warriors have inked 2006 draft pick Kosta Perovic to a multiyear deal, according to Perovic's agent, Bill Duffy."

btw..
how would former high school rivals Croshere and b-diddy co-exist on the same team!! remember on one of the dallas games in the playoffs, baron and croshere were about to go david and goliath on each other ! with Goliath being baron and a different outcome as goliath knocks steps all over david..

by jayknocc14 on Aug 2, 2007 5:45 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Well
Baron and KG also got into it last year during a game at the Oracle and nobody said they couldn't coexist.  The fact is Baron gets extremely firy on the court and he could get into it with anybody.  Well, I guess anybody but his Grand-Mama...

croshere = murphleavy?
i remember austin hitting a few clutch threes back in the indiana heydey of reggie miller, but he seems like a stiff to me.

Holy hell
#@#$%^&$#@&#?!!

Hats off I guess to Janny Hu to for being able to write a lead like this

While the Warriors won't be getting dream acquisition Kevin Garnett, they appear ready to make their first dent in free agency. Golden State has been in talks with forward Austin Croshere...

Without even a trace of irony or bitterness.

So who does the stiff take minutes from? Is there anyone on this site who would be happy seeing Austin freaking Croshere even for five minutes over Wright, Powell, or Lasme?

Now excuse me for a minute while I ponder becoming a Celtics fan...

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 2, 2007 7:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hu did "clown" austin a little ....
the sfgate headline says:

"Warriors make initial run in free agent market at Dallas scrub Croshere."

this dude is a scrub. i've never seen him run like the warriors like to.

yuck!!!

" Sleepy Floyd is Superman!!!"

Maybe
hes being signed for playoff experience. Though he may be old and somewhat rusty, he still gives a positive locker room presence and is a respectable guy in the league. I think for the right price, its not a bad deal for the W's.

by ballin on Aug 2, 2007 7:20 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Even if he pays us to play here
It's a bad deal.

Whose minutes do you want him taking, Barnes's, MP2's, Wright's, Powell's, or Lasme's?

Playoff experience? We're probably 50/50 to make the playoffs in the first place, and that number goes down 5-10% if we're actuallly considering making "Cro" part of our 8-10 man rotation. Dude's like a homeless man's Troy Murphy. He doesn't play a lick of defense, and his game appeared to be in absolute freefall last season.

Positive locker room presence? Respectable guy in the league? Whatever. Do you know him personally, or did you just copy that drivel from the approved list of "annoying clichés to be applied to crappy white players"?

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 2, 2007 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

4 of the 5
that you mentioned aren't even on the roster yet, so its hard to take minutes away.  The fact is he is going to be cheaper than than many of those guys.  I don't want him and would like all those guys to play, but we gotta convince them to come here first.

by yehyeh82 on Aug 2, 2007 7:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yup
So if Croshere doesn't take one of those guys' minutes, he'll take one of their roster spots. Even better.

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 2, 2007 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's probably
better than Powell. You can't take Austin for granted just because he's old and cant run with the team. Gotta come back to reality, not all players are great if they can run the court.

And those aren't annoying cliches because those 2 qualities are very important to a team. If you have no chemistry the team won't play like a team and you know what Austin had some good times in his NBA career, so his "nba experience" could maybe influence BWright and Powell, etc.

Just because he isn't a big name player, or a high flyer doesn't mean he isn't good. I know he may not be the best player that we could sign, but he isnt the worst. He always gives it his all on a nightly basis, and what's not to like? Just because you probably like high flyers, big name players, and guys who can run doesn't mean he is a bad player for the team.

by ballin on Aug 2, 2007 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pay attention, Einstein
I never said anything about only liking high flyers or big name players. The only kind of players I don't like are ones who suck. Croshere's 32 years old and coming off a season in which he shot 35% from the floor and put up a PER of 10.9. His last two seasons he's averaged 0.2 and 0.3 blocks per 40 minutes. When Avery Johnson talked in last year's playoffs about getting minutes for "Cro," I rubbed my hands together and involuntarily blurted out "EXcellent", a la Mr. Burns.

I don't want Austin Croshere anywhere near my team, ahead of Powell, Lasme, or really anybody. He'd also likely preclude the signing of Varejao, Gooden, or any of the other half-decent big men we've been discussing here.

Seriously, dude, is there anyone in the NBA you don't want to see on the Warriors? You do know we only get to play 8-10 guys a night, right?

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 2, 2007 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey
I'm just being positive. There are some good quality players out there. I don't know why you think I like every player out there. I just appreciate the fact that each player has their own talents.

I know we won't get every player in the league, and I don't want every player in the league. I'll admit Croshere is probably not going to solve any of the W's problems, but its not gonna worsen the W's problems, if he comes cheap.

And Sleepy, you are the einstein. You're the one who gets all the numbers and stuff! Good Job!

by ballin on Aug 2, 2007 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aw shucks
You have to admit though, whenever a random player gets brought up, you seem to be among the first to be all "positive" about him. You're even more of a slut for other team's players than I am! ;-P

The point is just to remember that playing time is a zero-sum game, which means acquiring or giving minutes minute to someone is, in effect, taking them away from someone else.

I guess I could live with Croshere as an 10th-11th man/designated techical FT shooter, but even then, I'd rather reserve those spots loveable types like Foyle and Cabbages. Even POB is miles more lovable than Austin Croshere.

NO ONE CAN REPLACE SARUNAS'
fist pumps and high fives.  Best 12th man eeeeever. We don't need another cliched 12th man white guy to take his place.  Sarunas gets paid 4 million cause he's the best at what he does...and he primarily does fist pumps and high fives...

by "positive locker room presence" he...
...seems to mean: Baron would clearly like to kick his @ss.

...which, thank you for the segue, is further evidence of my theory about the terribly inflated nature of Baron's relationship with Cash Warren, and in turn the likelyhood yet more Warriors face time for Miss Alba.  hmmm, Baron seems to despise his ex-Crossroads teammate Austin Croshere (an NBA talent), but is extremely chummy with ex-Crossroads teammate Cash Warren (2nd boy grip on teenie bopper movies).  what's the variable?  anyone?  anyone?

NO!! Austin Croshere doesn't fit here!!!
...he runs like his feet hurt or something.  He isn't mobile at all.  I don't get it, he's been a pretty crappy player for like 4 or 5 seasons now.

Positive locker room presence?  We already have our stiff on the bench for that (Adonnal Foyle).

Well, every single rumor that we've heard has been bogus - let's hope this is another.

Does anyone know if he and Mullin are buddies from Indiana??  It's my only explanation...

Wow
This move troubles me.  He can shoot the 3-ball, but is that what we really want on the team?  He has fire, sure, but if it is anything more than 1-2 years, 1.3 per, I will be amazed.  BRING BACK BARNES OVER THIS SCRUB

by belli nellie on Aug 2, 2007 8:41 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps
the W cannot buy out Foyle so they are signing Cros for vet min so that if he cannot take Foyle roster spot, at least he can bump him from the bench.

If this is true, I would like to see Cuban's reaction if the Don can squeeze more from Cros than the Mavs did last season. After all he has an average 3-point range (34.3%)for a big man and a decent FT (86.2%). The Don did it to Barnes last season isn't?

YES AUSTIN CROSHERE IS MY DREAM PLAYER!!!!!
I was hoping all along the Warriors would pass on Garnett so they could sign Austin Croshere!   His 3.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 11.9 minutes are exactly what this team needs!  John Hollinger will be ecstatic as Croshere can only increase his PER as a Warrior!!! WAHOOOOO!!!

Nothing like
dropping from KG to Croshere to dampen your day. Is this really the best Mullin can do? Maybe it's a smokescreen to resign Barnes, since the next part of the article says he fired Dan Fegan and got a new agent.
Barnes filed paperwork to terminate short-lived agent Dan Fegan two weeks ago, league sources said. The Bay Area-based Goodwin, who also reps top draft picks Kevin Durant and Al Horford, is expected to seek a multiyear deal from the Warriors.

Austin Croshere
is one-dimensional at best. He's only a shooter. It would be like acquiring Troy Murphy without the rebounding and lackadaisical hustle. I'd rather gun for Earl Boykins. I hella hope that those Drew Gooden rumors come true.

Who last year shot 35% from the field and 28% from 3. He can make a mean free throw though (86% career) on the off-chance he ever gets to the line...

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 2, 2007 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

None of this
makes any sense.  First off, he's crappy, old and unathletic.  Not a good fit for any team, but particuarly the Warriors.

Furthermore, this is the type of move to round out the roster.  The Warriors, presumably still have a few major moves to make.  They have to shore up the PF postion with a REAL player; acquire a wing players to replace Richardson;  figure out if they will re-sign either Pietrus or Barnes or a suitable replacement; acuire a back-up PG.

Where exactly does signing Austin "danger is my middle name because I'm about to have a heart attack" Croshere fit into all of this?  I'd rather they have spent that money on Eddie House, like Sleepy's new favorite team did.  And tell me to God that they are not spending more than House money ($1.8 million) on this death trap.

by jlagace on Aug 2, 2007 10:35 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

some players
just have a hard playing off the bench. the thing with croshere is he's never been good enough to be a starter consistently, but he isn't productive unless he gets starter-type minutes.

also, a lot of forwards that play as a reserve for dallas have their stats suffer. jamsion van horn walker right off the top of my head.

i don't think he's as bad as he looked in dallas, neither do i think he's as good as that short spurt of excellence in the playoffs some five years ago. if we can sign him for like an Azu-like deal, i think he'd do ok.

and i dono wut you guys are talking about him taking up a roster spot. as of now, our 4 is still one huge question mark.

by dso on Aug 2, 2007 10:44 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

this is all don(n) nelson
Donn Nelson runs the dallas front office, while his dad Don Nelson runs the gsw front office. Oh, I mean Chris Mullin does, my bad.

This doesn't have really anything to do with a FA signing, other than the fact that dallas was crosheres last team.

so whats your point jrizzle?

Austin croshere is a weak soft slow loser of a player thats best attribute is shooting.  If he can rebound and hit an open three i guess that would be acceptable. D is atrocious.

If this deal is over 2 million its absurd

WTF!!!!!!
What in all holy f@ck is going on?! (OZ, if there ever was a time to curse, I hope you agree this is it). Croshere is a paperweight. Yes, he has playoff experience, but so do Phil Jackson's loafers and they shoot a higher FG %. We have been singing Mullin's praises for seeming to finally get it. This would be the exact opposite type of move. Sleepy, you are right on, this guy is f-ing clown shoes. He is subtraction by addition: he takes away minutes from either developing and/or more productive players. From KG to croshere would ahve to be one of the worst turns in free agent history. This is like the Giants going from carlos lee or soriano to dave roberts. When the f%#$ does football season start?!

by Lifelong on Aug 2, 2007 11:17 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

But, what if....
We all know Mullin would punch his mother in the face before letting news of a trade/signing go public before it happened.

So, WHAT IF he was doing this just to screw with the fans. Let us think for a day or two that Croshere is plan B to KG, let us blow up the blog sites, tear our hair out and prepare a lynch gang in Mullin's neighborhood. Then, he will hit us with the real move, something that is significantly bigger and better (not saying much, I realize). What if he is just that savvy? I like it better than the alternative, which is him being that dumb.

by Lifelong on Aug 2, 2007 11:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

At least Dave Roberts
Still had one very useful skill (stealing bases), and is, from this Red Sox' fan's perspective, very lovable.

Croshere left his only real skill (shooting) in Indiana, and has a big stupid face that only a mother could love:

One can only hope Mulson are reading this thread...

For a guy who left his skill
in Indy, this is a good box score:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/DAL20070130.html

One of the reasons Mullin was hot for Harrington is because he played with him in Indy, I can't help but think his experiences with Croshere are influencing this decision (if this is really happening).

Hey, I respect you more
when you leave the false hyperbole out of the argument. Read an article about that game before you say it was garbage time, like this one:

http://www.sportsline.com/nba/gamecenter/recap/NBA_20070130_SEA@DAL

The fact is you basically said he left his offensive skills in Indy and this game demonstrates otherwise.

And... without his 34 Dallas loses the game. Give credit where it is due.

by sfhand on Aug 2, 2007 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at it this way
How bad would Croshere's stats have been without that game?  A sample size of one game means nothing.  Look at the entire season.  Anyhow, I doubt you are defending Crosher's merits as a player (an impossible task), just trying to put a positive spin on an unseemly rumor.

by San Francisco Slim on Aug 2, 2007 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm just trying
to give credit where credit is due. If he left his offense in Indy that would not have happened.

You're right that I'm not endorsing the move or Croshere as a player. I don't know enough about basketball in general or the NBA specifically to think I'm a better judge than Mullin, Nelson, or whomever. I decided to just relax and enjoy the off season and wait until the games start to evaluate the off season moves.

by sfhand on Aug 2, 2007 5:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

SFhand, dude
I'd respect you more if you could appreciate the difference between hyperbole and figurative language. But OK, next time I say someone "left their game behind," I'll be sure to specify for the literal folks here that, no, they didn't actually, physically leave their game behind.

Granted, "garbage-time" was an unnecessary rhetorical flourish; I take that part back.

Bottom line: shooting 35% over the course of an 81-game season carries a lot more weight than a single 34-point game. Absent a compelling explanation for the season-long slump (injury, etc.) I'm going to assume the most likely one: at age 31, his game, which was never particularly stellar, has entered a period of decline.

I could go a step further by compiling a list for you of all the absolute scrubs who have had 30-point games in tthe NBA, but I don't really see the point. I'm fairly sure you understand the importance of considering sample size. I'm not even really sure what your argument is, except just to trip me up on a point of semantics. If so, you definitely got me on the" garbage-time" part. Well done.

I'm suprised noone has mentioned this comment, but when he said that he wouldn't listen to the "lunatic fringe" that wanted to sign Vlad, I wanted to kill the man. Every time I see a Vlad highlight on sportscenter or in the HR derby, I hear Sabean with his stupid NY accent saying "we're not gonna listen to the, ya know, lunatic fringe out there". Sorry, that had to come out.

You're trying to provoke OZ, aren't you? ;-)
The first posts I ever remember reading of his were on the Giants board relating to that now infamous Sabean quote. IIRC, he was a bit less good-natured back then than he is now...

In fairness, fans of both the Red Sox and Yankees, neither of whom often get accused of being cheap, also complain a lot about failing to land Guerrero. At the time, there were semi-serious concerns about Vlad's back.

On the other hand, Vlad clearly would have taken a friendly discount to play with Alou, and a dominant RH bat has probably been the Gs' single most gaping need since the departure of Kent.

Sigh ... at least there's #756 to look forward to, right?...

You remember that feeling you got when the Warriors were starting to gel, went on a little run, and Mike Montgomery put in Dunleavy, then everything went to holy hell and the life got sucked out of Oracle? Apparently that feeling is on its way back.

The good thing is Nellie has no problem benching players who reek. Silver lining!

never........
we got enough useless players riding the bench we need someone who will earn some playing time...
still waiting for the ring but it aint a thing good things come to those that wait

croshure really isnt that bad
it's just dallas has spent the last three years trying to force decent players into bench roles. croshure is probably the worst out of the jamison/walker/keith van horn and other dallas bench forwards, but all of them saw their production drop after coming to dallas. and with the emergence of josh howard, any play croshure might have been able to consistently get completely vanished. also, 11 minutes a game is really not enough time for a player to prove his effectiveness.

once again it comes all down to the money. 1.2 for two years and i'm sold. anything above the veterans minimum and the warriors are wasting mone.

that would be a baaaaaad
decision if we take croshere. There are tons of better players only around Europe(not to mention NBA).This would be a step back. Please Mullin don't sign him.I would rather see Kevin Willis playing for us than "cro".That would be hilarious, from bringing KG to signing Croshere. Is there something in the water in the Bay area.

what a waste!
no luvin for Mullin right now...

is this a final admission that POB was a complete bust as a W's draft pick?  If so, *&%&@! If not, then this signing does not make a wit of sense - if minutes are going to anyone, they should go towards developing the young 7 footer on the roster, not to a no defense playing too weak too slow below average past his prime player like croshere.

I'd rather have Powell or Lasme.

agreed
plus, it would be nice to see if Josh Powell can develop into a 20+ mpg player while on the Ws - his potential seems rather untapped, while croshere's is tapped out.  oh well... signing is over and done with

WHAT IN HOLY-HELL IS REALLY GOIN' ON?!?
http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_6528379 (sorry if double-posted)

i don't get this at all!

The moves mean Golden State -- which had no official comment on either signing but is expected to announce both deals today -- has 14 of its 15 roster slots filled. That includes restricted free-agent forward Mickael Pietrus, who is on the Warriors' books at the team's qualifying offer of $3.47 million, and doesn't leave much room for rookie forward Stephan Lasme, a second-round selection, unrestricted free-agent forward Matt Barnes or any other new acquisition they might be targeting.

if i'm understanding correct (it is 2:53am) did we just tell Lasme to piss off so we can sign Lostin Croshere!?!

i'm feeling sick to my stomach...

by Anomaly on Aug 2, 2007 11:54 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Pietrus
As its says in the article, we only have the qualifying out to Pietrus- he hasn't signed it. The offer occupies the cap space until we pull it, he rejects, or he accepts it.

Questions? Complaints?
