Signing: Bucks sign Yi

Although this doesn't have any real relation with the Warriors, I thought it would just be diary-worthy that the "Yi Movement" is officially dead. I'm pretty surprised that his "people" let him sign with the Bucks. But I am also pretty glad that the Warriors never traded/drafted him as he didn't look very productive in the summer league compared to our very own Italian.

Wow
The official end of an era on this site. Curious to see what kind of a eulogy the GSoM boys cook up.

I say good for Milwaukee for sticking to their guns and not blabbing to the press while negotiations were taking place. And good for Mr. Yi and his "handlers" for finally coming around. I'll definitely root for the guy. From his summer league showing he looks to have a ways to go, but he has the tools and talent to end up somewhere between Bargnani and Bosh.

So I guess that leaves us with ... the Singh movement? Sigh.

Personally, as an unrepentant daydreamer, I'm keeping the "JSmoovement" alive until he signs an extension...

The YI Movement
goes on in our hearts. and not until he retires. and even when he retires, we'll keep lobbying for him until he shuts it down completely like Reggie Miller! i might just get make a custom "Yi" Warriors throwback just for the hell of it!

One forgotten casualty of the Yi movement...
Old GSoMer "Skeptic Con Urquell."

Yeah, he was more than a little wack, especially when it came to Yi, but I feel kinda sad to have lost such a distinctive voice on this site. For one thing, outside of the Commish (I think), he was one of the few over-50 members of the GSoM community...

As for Yi: the more I think about it, the more I think it's actually good for him to start his career in the relative obscurity of Wisconsin rather than the glare of NY or LA. It will allow him to go through his growing pains without the constant scrutiny. And in 3 years, if he really wants the spotlight of the big city, and if his game merits it, he's free to seek it.

finally
now y'all can take down that pic of him on the home page...just take a deep breath and let it go

Good for him
If he decides Milwaukee is not the "right" place for him he can always sign anywhere else after 3 years.  It's good for him now to develop his skill and raise that to the NBA level.
But, we all know he's going to sign with Milwaukee sooner or later because he didn't have any bargaining chip.

four years
All NBA rookies sign a contract with 2 guaranteed years and 2 team options.

Questions? Complaints?

question..
Can a player actually negotiate a stipulation that the team has to not use it's team option on a rookie's contract so that he may reach his 2nd contract faster?

by ThermoElectro on Aug 29, 2007 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

no
I doubt the NBA/CBA would allow that.

The rule was changed from 2 guaranteed + 1 team option to 2 team options to give teams more control over their rookies. As salaries rise, teams need to get production from rookies to stay competitive.

Most rookies take 3 years to develop- it would suck to see teams lose players they've invested time into.

Not so much to lose the player...
But so that he may renegotiate a second contract with the existing team.

by ThermoElectro on Aug 29, 2007 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

he needs three years
to get bird rights. so if they terminate the contract after year 2. they can't offer him anything if they over the cap.

The Yi Movement was plagued from the start
By the unfortunate fact that Yi just isn't really all that great.

(Good, yes. Great, no. This is no Yao.)

Everyone seems to forget...
that Yao wasn't well recieved as a draft pick either.  Numerous criticisms of how his soft and nonimposing nature would lead him to become a bust in the league. He was being compared to shawn bradley and to a lesser extent, Manute Bol with a ceiling of Rik Smits.   Hell, he was horrible until like 13 games into the season.  So, factually speaking, we don't know how good or great or average  or horrible Yi is.  But at least now we get to see him play.(sorta, I don't know how many milwaukee games will be nationally televised)

Good for the Bucks...
Kudos to them for getting this done.  In the end, the system works.  I wonder though, what kind of precedence this sets for the future of scouting NBA prospects in China.  Will the CBA relax on restrictions on its players or will US scouts stop looking as hard into China?

Also, I wonder the kind of reception Yi is going to get in Milwaukee. While under normal circumstances, it might be better to develop in Milwaukee where there isn't any attention than in NY,LA etc....I wouldn't be surprised if bucks fans treat him like how we treated Dunleavy Jr.

by ThermoElectro on Aug 29, 2007 11:56 AM PDT reply actions

just wait 4 years then
i bet theres a good chance he's just using the bucks like most players use the NCAA. Use them to gain experience and then bolt for a real NBA city team such as LA, NYC, Boston, or of couse...OAK. Just wait, the YI MOVEMENT is not dead, its just going into hibernation.

Interesting column from Milwaukee July 14
I read this Milwaukee JS column when it came out, but I was not about to start another Yi discussion here based on what happened last time I did that.

Still, the column stuck with me for a month an a half. A few will find this offensive but most will say, "what's the big deal?". It's not overtly racist, it's just really condecending. I won't editorialize beyond that.

From the JS Column: Time for Yi to become his own man

the handlers, the agents and everyone else working the angles. You want to be in the NBA. So take this opportunity, turn yourself into Dirk Nowitzki and, if in three to five years from now the Bucks cannot afford you, see what else is out there. We call that the American Way.

Look, I know the Chinese government is a tough nut. I've dealt with it in a couple of Olympics and sometimes it's like beating your head against a great wall. But if this is your dream, the NBA, and you want to begin pursuing it now to maximize your earning years in a sport where players begin breaking down in their early 30s, respectfully tell it these eight words:

"I want to play for the Milwaukee Bucks."

You will be a little homesick at first, but you will get over it quickly. That's because in this league, you will be a man.
