Kosta dissed

The head-scratching signing of the summer probably belongs to the Golden State Warriors, who paid the improbable amount of 4.7 million dollars for the right to sign Kosta Perovic for three years, not including the $500,000 they contributed to his buyout... Under certain circumstances, a slow, soft and skinny 7-footer like Perovic might have been able to play as a third string center on some half-court, slow it down teams, but never for Don Nelson....

Star-divide

Wow.
Let's just hope that's way off, and Perovic contributes. I thought I'd heard from other sources that he's not all that slow, and has a decent jumper for a guy his size.  this don't look good

I thought the majority of people have agreed that nobody knows anything about this guy except for his supposed height and weight, which I doubt that can even be accurate.

The freaking preseason hasn't even started yet and players that have yet to play a game in an nba type environment are being judged.  As with Brandan Wright and the others who have yet to play, I'd hold  off any judgments until at least half way through the first season... even then must I bring up the Biedrins slow blossoming example again?

uhh..
Good players dont spend two years overseas before getting signed by an NBA team. Period. He's not good.

good players dont spend two years overseas........
And the Warriors took Belinelli (5 years overseas) 18th in the draft, what were they thinking?  Someone should have told the Spurs that so they wouldn't have drafted Ginobili (6 years overseas) and how dumb are the Jazz for taking the 4 years overseas Andrei Kirilenko.

werdrfdfsdf
Firstly, I didn't say years spent overseas before being drafted. None of the players you mentioned STAYED overseas after being drafted. So those stupid little factoids you came up with, trying to make a point? Pointless.

Smartass. Don't put words in my mouth.

eh.
First to Ace Fury, Manu played 2-3 years before entering the 1999 draft AND to Coma, he then signed with a European team until 2002 where SA bought out his contract.

Heres some other notables that got drafted but stayed overseas 1-3 years:

Peja
Nenad Krstic
Gordan Giricek
Mehmet Okur

The San Antonio Spurs are most notable of drafting players and then signing them at a later time. I'm not trying to insinuate an argument but I'm just saying that Kosta could have some potential to become a solid bench player...one day...

the spurs
don't count. They were winning championships and contending, they could afford to stash a guy overseas and save a roster spot.

In any event, Kosta's got alot to prove that he wasn't just an agent-forced move and Mullin mistake.

Questions? Complaints?

Mistake?
Maybe, but if it means Bill Duffy is more inclined to give us a favorable deal on a Biedrins extension, a couple mil a year is a pretty small price to pay.

Heck, rumor has it the Red Sox gave JD "worthless POS" Drew 4/$56M mostly to grease the Bora$$ wheels in their negotiations with Matsuzaka.

It makes me wonder: now that Kosta-coast is in the fold, and all our deadweight has been jettisoned, does anyone have an educated guess as to when a Biedrins deal gets done? Unlike the Monta situation, it doesn't really seem in anyone's interest to wait it out much longer. And what are we guessing as far as terms? 5/$50M? 5/$60M?

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 31, 2007 2:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Biedrins deal gets done by Nov. 1st
5 Year $55 million, which is basically what you said.

by San Francisco Slim on Aug 31, 2007 9:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no hurry
i'm sure the deal is imminent, just that mullin and duffy are getting other business out of the way first

a year ago, kirk hinrich didn't get his extension until october; ditto two years ago IIRC for Josh Howard

extensions for guys you know you're going to keep are down on the priority list i suppose

Already posted
By BiedrinsorBust in this diary.

Not really much to discuss, if only because, as david240z says, "nobody knows anything about this guy."

Still, initial scouting reports aren't very promising. In terms of physical tools, he doesn't seem to belong in the same universe as even the 18 y.o. Biedrins.

If we have to play Kosta or POB any significant minutes this year, I'll take it as a sign we didn't construct our roster very well.

Psyche!
Don't you know we're gonna gonna trade our entire roster for a washed up veteran? I think we're gonna see some minute from Perovic at the point. He's our go to guy off the bench--half court lobs baby!

Kostas Stats Average of 06-07
http://aba-league.com/igraci.php?id=552&sez=06#season

By the way, his team won the championship and he was the third leading scorer behind our very own Vonteego Cummings (by 1 point/average).

by BTT on Aug 31, 2007 2:05 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks
That at least gives us something to go by in guesstimating him. For example, we can say from the 56.8% FG/72% FT that he probably does have a pretty nice shooting touch.

Some other stats, prorated to 40 Mins:

21.7 pts
10.0 reb
2.4 ast
1.4 blk
1.6 stl
3.1 to

Not terrible for a 21-y.o., though the words "third leading scorer behind Vonteego" remind one to keep in mind the level of competition...

Hollinger's Translated Euroleague PER
Hollinger translates Perovic's 21 year-old numbers to be okay, a 12.21 PER.  Based on that, he could be a decent NBA player.  My general thought is that he will be too slow to be played by Nelson.

Here are the translated PERs for Perovic and other notable Euroleague players from last season.

Kosta Pervo 12.21
Luis Scola 16.27
Rudy Fernandez 15.83
Tiago Splitter 13.04
Marco Belinelli 7.34

And Hollinger's translate Euroleague PER explanation:

There's a very predictable relationship between a player's stats in Europe and what they'll be in the NBA, one that shows surprisingly little variation between players. Those who make the jump from the Euroleague (the highest level of European basketball) to the NBA can expect the following:
  • their scoring rate to decrease by 25 percent;
  • their rebound rate to increase by 18 percent (there are more missed shots to grab over here);
  • their assist rate to increase by 31 percent (their scorers are stingy on assists);
  • their shooting percentage to drop by 12 percent; and
  • overall, their PER drops by 30 percent.

Belinelli 7.34 -- lol
So based on Hollinger's "predictable" formula, Beli can be expected to put up a rookie season PER of 5.1. I'm not even sure that physically possible. In fact, I feel confident in saying that if Beli doesn't surpass his Euroleague 7.34 PER this year, I will personally fly to Bristol, CT and wash Hollinger's balls.

As for "Pervo," I agree: whatever the stats might say, the scouting reports don't seem to jibe with the Nelson philosophy at all. I can live with him as a pure garbage-time 12th man, but I'd still love to see us snag a true backup 4/5 like Varejão.

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 31, 2007 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whoops
The numbers were already translated, so ignore the 5.1 part. The promise to ballwash Hollinger if Beli doesnt break 7.34 PER totally stands. Christ, the POB put up a 7.3 last year. Foyle was at 13.7. Dajuan Wagner 17.2.

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 31, 2007 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Translated PER
The PER numbers are not exactly what Hollinger is predicting for next season.  Just what the players' translated PER would have been if they had played in the NBA last season.  Belinelli is only 22, so one would expect that to improve somewhat.  Also, Belinelli had a better season two years ago, when his translated PER would have been 10.35, so a logical predicted PER would be closer to that.

But I've been following his Euroleague PER predicitions over the years and it does work pretty well.  Are you objecting to the concept of his system, or just that a player you want to do well rates poorly?  Hey, and the ballwashing thing, that sounds kind of Republican Senator like. ;-D

by San Francisco Slim on Aug 31, 2007 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hollinger's words
Those who make the jump from the Euroleague (the highest level of European basketball) to the NBA can expect the following [...] overall, their PER drops by 30 percent.

Um, yeah: that implies pretty clearly that 7.3 is his prediction for next season. 10.35 is simply your more educated guess.

All I'm really objecting to is the 7.3 figure, which doesn't remotely pass the smell test. How much I want Belinelli to do well has very little to with it.

As for the ballwashing ... the first step in my plan of action was to go into an ESPN men's room stall and assume the "wide stance" ... ;-D

Mildly related note on Marco:
I remember watching the NBAtv International Basketball pre-draft special and they talked a bit about Marco. One thing that they mentioned that stuck with me which I haven't heard mentioned here was that last year (the year he had a 7.3 translated PER) was a very tough year for him mentally. Apparently he had THREE different coaches during the year and they ran three different offenses none of which properly utilized him. Seems like the organization was kind of a mess.

This may explain why he had such a drop off last year and why he came out so strong in summer league. I've had a hard time finding any links to confirm this but I remember the show pretty well (I watched it twice).

repost
Didn't we have a diary on this?

Anyways, Belinelli doesn't just play in the Euro league, he also played in the Italian leagues

so just remember Hollinger's numbers are from Belinelli's play in just one arena of basketball

Down here, again
Well, once again Hollinger makes no sense of his own rules.  Literally, the 7.3 figure is Belinelli's translated figures from LAST season.  If Hollinger is predicting he will have the same PER this season, particuarly when he had a stronger PER two years ago, that's faulty logic in my mind.  I put the blame on his poor wording.

Since he's at an age where he should be improving, I would guess he'll have something like an 11.0 PER.  BTW, there is a misconception that Belinelli's stats were good during summer league.  Only his 3P FG% and  steal rate was above average.  Everything else (2P FG%, RB, AST, BLK, FT% ) was below average for that league.

Kosta
is the kind of player who would forego to be mamber of the Serbian national team just to prepare and polish his game for the Warriors is worth his contract.
I canceled because I want to prepare myself," he said. "This has been my wish since I was a kid, to one day play in the NBA. Now my wish is coming true. But I have to work to prove myself."

http://www.insidebayarea.com/warriors/ci_6657233

Besides, I would rather take Mullin's word over Givony

"We are excited that Kosta will be joining our team this season," said Mullin. "He is a very skilled player and we think that he has tremendous potential. We look forward to getting him in our system and continuing his development."

update on perovic
from the recent interview by Tim Roye of KBNR.
Although he's the age of a typical college senior, Perovic already owns seven years of professional basketball experience. Playing for the top team in Serbia - Partizan Belgrade - Perovic helped the club win Serbian League titles in each of the past five seasons.

we'll see
i was tempted to think it's another Nelson spotting but we bought his rights before Nellie came back on board.  he's hungry to play and working hard so unless sleepy's right about the biedrins' agent angle i see him as the more motivated back up 5 that POB can't seem to morph into and maybe a good step up offensively from ol' stone hands.  hearing that he's already here and working hard sounds good to me.  he's a total mystery to most of us and that's intriguing...7'2 and hungry, let's see it!

by redape on Aug 31, 2007 9:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

we did have his rights pre-Nelson II
but didn't have to sign him - so clearly Nelson has a plan to either use him as a player or trade bait ...

in Nelson we trust

With
all this Nelli Beli talk I was browsing DraftExpress and came across this evaluation of him. It's from 2006 but it goes into pretty good detail of his positive and negatives. Some other stuff people may not know about him is that he was actually projected as a point guard a few years ago, so he should be able to play spot minutes at the PG position for us this year. He was also used as a defensive specialist during his time in Italy so this potentially gives us lock down type defender. Overall the evaluation speaks highly of him and there aren't many negatives. I thought it was an interesting read and gave some good insight on his game. Anyone wanting to know a little bit more about him may want to take a peek.

what's up with all this PER stuff???
Personally, I don't think it means much at all. This are all projections, silly numbers. I'm just glad that he's out here working his ass off already and even took criticism for skipping national team play this summer. and we know how Europeans take National team play more seriously. heck I went on our pre-season game blowout of Efis Pielsen last year and the visiting crowd own the arena despite losing by 50 points.

Meanwhile, Notorious POB is somewhere _____

Can anybody finish the sentence? I'm also glad Brandan Wright is doing the same thing. Remember good 'ol Jrich didn't have a jumper or the 3pt range coming in. But he worked those things into his game every season. It's nice to see we got a couple of guys who looks like they may have the same work ethic

by lightz0ut on Aug 31, 2007 4:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

PER
The thing that is funny to me about PER is that almost everyone here admits that it is a very flawed stat yet we all continue to use it regularly when comparing players. The fact is that it's damn convenient to have a single number that at least somewhat measures overall production and until there is something better I think people will continue to embrace it.
