Question: What does the gameday roster look like?

Now that most of the roster wheeling and dealing is done (assuming Pietrus is back), the final depth chart as others have posted should look like:

Baron/Hudson/Monta
Monta/Belinelli/Azu
SJax/Pietrus/Azu
Harrington/Barnes/Wright/Lasme/Croshere
Biedrins/Perovic/POB/Croshere/Lasme

or some combination of that.

Star-divide

My question is, who do we see on the bench on gameday?

A team can carry 13 active players on the bench?  Right?  Or is it 12 active and 3 inactive?

That leaves 2 to 3 players that won't be on the bench.  I may be premature in my speculation as it may become obvious in training camp who gets in Nellie's doghouse, but I don't see our first rounders going straight to the D-League.  That leaves three that have a shot of going down to Bakersfield imo:  Lasme, Perovic, POB.

POB could come out and wow us in camp, but I really don't see it.  Lasme is probably a victim of being on a fairly deep team and will spend a year in the D-League.  With the money we paid Perovic, I don't see him going to the D-League, but you never know with Nellie.

The wildcard would be if the Warriors swing another trade or decide to cut someone (my only guess is possibly Croshere?).

This means that there most likely won't be camp surprises like Barnes or (almost) Wagner.

What do you all think?  Is this a pointless post?  Is it good for team Chemistry that we will have a solid core going into camp?

Good topic
I believe it's 12 active and 3 inactive.

You have figure POB is out, as well as one of Lasme or Croshere (I'm hoping it's Cro). I'll be totally bummed if Kelenna isn't a keeper.

Personally, if Monta shows any improvement at all in his PG skills at all during camp, I'd boot Troy Hudson off the island until and unless Baron gets hurt.

Alternately, MP2 finds an 11th hour deal elsewhere, which would free up a spot for two from the Lasme/Croshere/Hudson group.

training camp
Talking about this now is pure speculation.

In a couple weeks we'll have some training camp performances to go on.

Holy Arbitrary Criteria Batman!
  1. It's not pure speculation but a reasonable question that can be narrowed down by deductive reasoning and some speculation.
  2. You just posted a mostly redundant diary on a topic that is much more speculative than this one . . .
Baron may or may not be extended and he may or may not opt out and he may get $x or $y or $z for  x, y, z number of years. There was also speculation about Biedrins in there too.

Versus . . .

The Warriors will end up with 15 people under contract and will need to pick 12 initially and then send someone to the D-league after Jackson serves his suspension. This is a very reasonable and relevant topic.

3. Almost everything you post here is speculation, which are primarily hypothetical trade and contract scenarios. Talk about the pot calling the kettle "pure speculation"!

You know I don't get into it with people here at all and I think you do a good job getting rid of the junk diaries and posts but the comment I'm responding to is baseless, condescending and completely uncalled for.

Am I missing something?

Yes, OZ...
...and Lord knows we wouldn't want to trade in speculation on here ;-)

My question is, what slot does Jackson fill during his suspension? Does he take up an inactive slot, or can we carry 15 other guys for those 7 seven games, then bump one when he comes back? I'm sure this info is available somewhere in the vastness of the world wide interweb, but I'm feeling lazy and I'm sure one of the brilliant minds on here already knows the answer.

Good question
I think a team can activate a player if a roster player is suspended, but I haven't found any proof of this. In cases such as the famous Pacers/Pistons brawl, the Pacers had like 6 players suspended, and it doesn't seem likely that they'd not be able to activate their scrubs.

by ffgolden on Sep 24, 2007 5:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Hmmm
I'm pretty sure he does take up one of the 15 roster slots while suspended so that would put him as one of the three inactive players. I know under extreme cases the league has granted exceptions to the 15 man limit (in cases of mass injury or suspension) but I think that they are pretty strict about it.

I guess I'll assume Pietrus re-signs
although I don't know why Miami doesn't just sign him to an offer sheet now since it's not holding anything else up.

- First you have the core 6 minus Jackson:

Baron/Monta/Biedrins/Harrington/Barnes/Pietrus

- Then you have the two veterans who they wouldn't sign and then toss into the D-League:

Hudson/Croshere

- Then your two guys who are almost locks:

Belinelli/Azubuike

- That's 10 so it leaves 2 spots for 4 guys at first before Jackson:

POB/Lasme/Kosta/Wright

Barring injury, you're looking at Wright (lottery pick and traded for J-Rich) and then Kosta (because of the contract and politics or luring him from Europe).

  • If Lasme has a great camp then you may release Croshere or Kosta or Wright or Croshere may come down  with a nasty case of "Sawmp foot" or "flu like symptoms" or just go on the inactive list.  I don't think you send either of the young guys to the d-league.
  • The likelihood is that someone will get injured in  camp and someone will also get/remain injured when Jackson returns which will help drive the decision making.

Miami signing Pietrus
If Miami really wants Pietrus, signing him to an offer sheet makes sense, but it's not clear that they're that hip on him.  Miami has a large payroll.  Signing him to the sheet means that two things happen: either we match (if it's low enough) or they get him (if the price tag is too high for us).    Neither are necessarily what Miami wants.

Miami also has15 contracts in hand.  I don't know if all of them are guaranteed, but to get Pietrus, they'd have to let someone go.  I'm not sure if league rules allow them to sign him unless they've got a   roster spot for him.  They're also going to be over the lux threshold.  Is Pietrus worth a dollar for dollar penalty  (such that paying him 5 means spending 10)?  I don't think so.

offersheet for pietrus
What exactly can they use to sign him to an offer sheet?

They blew their MLE on Smush Parker.

Does a team need to be under the cap to sign a guy to an offer sheet?

Parker was signed for $2.2m but you're both right
in that Miami would still have to clear some space to even sign him to an offer sheet. I was still thinking only in terms of the Heat not wanting to tie up money for 7 days as no longer being a prohibiting factor with the state of the FA market but . . . yah, got lost in the nuance and missed the basic point.

charlie bell
Actually, they did offer Bell $18M/5 years. Thats not the full MLE...its starting salary around $3M.

If they gave Pietrus that, he'd laugh, since he apparently wants $5M/year starting at the least (and no one's bitten so far)...and even if he signed such an offer sheet, we'd match.

Aside from the length, which might be annoying, Pietrus at even cheaper price than Barnes is just too good to pass up, especially as a trading chip in a year.

Inactive List Roster
I'd say that Kosta Perovic will be our 13th or 14th man, while Stephane Lasme and maybe Patrick O'Bryant will be the 14th and 15th options respectively if we decide to get ourselves a 15th player.

by Phil T28 on Sep 24, 2007 6:42 PM PDT   0 recs

did anyone honestly
think that we were going to pick up a back up point gaurd that was a better option then monta?  and does anybody honestly think that hudson will get a lot of pt, more then monta at the point?

my take, hudson will basically play kieth mcloud's role before he got traded.  some spot minutes here and there, maybe a back up role if someone goes down.

also...
we don't really have to send people down to the d-league.  guys that could possibly go i think are perovic and lasme because they are young and pretty raw, but i think that there is a good chance that we just keep 14 or 15 and keep 2-3 players inactive and just have them practice with the team everyday and look to improve.

by Proof on Sep 24, 2007 6:43 PM PDT   0 recs

Hudson
I wouldn't chalk Hudson up as a guaranteed in our top 12. Ellis and/or Belinelli may have a great camp and push Hudson into our bottom 3, if not off the team.

Not placing and probabilities on it, but it's possible.

my couple cents
I will also assume that MP2 remains on the team. Though, god willing he will be 86'd by then. If he is gone I would expect either the player he is traded for takes his active roster spot OR he gets an offer sheet from some team and then one of the training camp guys (maybe Pierce?) gets an IL roster spot and Lasme will get the active roster spot.
Regardless of any scenario, I just can't see POB or Kosta cracking that 12 man rotation anytime soon.
  1.  Baron
  2.  Monta
  3.  Barnes
  4.  Harrington
  5.  Biedrins
  6.  Pietrus
  7.  Belinelli
  8.  Azubuike
  9.  Hudson
  10. Croshere
  11. Jackson
  12. Wright
IL: Lasme (will be active the first 7 games)
IL: Kosta
IL: POB

Sounds about right
But what about Wright? I agree that Wright and Lasme are 12 and 13, respectively, but the way that Nellie was talking about Lasme (more NBA-ready than Wright, can defend anybody, etc) I wouldn't be surprised if they swap positions, depending on how they do in camp. I don't see Wright going to the D-League, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's inactive for awhile after Jax gets back. I could also see Hudson falling out of the active 12, if all of the young guards do their thing early on.

I doubt Perovic will be a shoe-in on the active roster because of his contract. Nellie doesn't really care, and he might have been a Duffy payback anyway--I doubt PT plays into that.

by ffgolden on Sep 24, 2007 10:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed
if Belinelli or Monta prove that they can hold down the backup PG spot, then it's possible that Hudson goes to the IL and either Lasme or Wright (whomever the odd man out was there) will get the active spot.

that looks about right
can't wait for the season to start already!

if nellie doesn't favor the veterans hudson and croshere too much, i'd like to see more playing time for kosta, lasme, and pob!

by thewarriorsrule on Sep 26, 2007 1:23 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Monta not a SG according to Nellie
So what does that mean for T-Hud?  Do we need a third string point guard or is he Baron insurance?

Nellie is talking up Croshere and Lasme, is he trying to inspire Al, Monta and Wright?  I don't get Nellie sometimes, his strategies.  Does he think Belinelli needs praise while Wright needs some criticism?

I want to see this team gel in camp.
