Gary Payton interested in the Warriors.

I have no real opinion on this. It would be great for him to retire in his hometown but thats about it. He's completely worn out and his shot/assists would never be the same. He would be a good mentor for Monta and even Baron.
By the way, I'm high as hell so if that made no sense. cool.

Poor D
In any case I would rather let ellis or beli get more time at the point than giving up minutes to a veteran.

if we could get rooney to leave, why not?
He could play 5-10 mins a game, backup Baron, teach Monta about the PG position, how to play lights out D, how to set up the offense, etc...
Remember, the Dubs are a hella young team and they could use another wise vet...

Why not?
As for him as commentator....I don't think I'd like it. But it would be fun to see a Atlanta-Minnesota game commentated by Stephen A. Smith and Gary Payton, with Stuart Scott doing sideline commentary.

You've got it 100% backwards
Unfortunately, he's 39 now, and no closer to that guy than the 44-y.o. Jordan is to the Jordan of the early 1990s.
Payton PER by year
-----
01/02 -- 22.9
02/03 -- 21.1
03/04 -- 17.3
04/05 -- 15.1
05/06 -- 10.7
06/07 -- 9.0
If that doesn't bespeak someone who has totally fallen off a cliff, I don't know what does.
By way of comparison, MJ in his last two creaky years put up PERs of 20.8 and 19.3. Basically, the 44-y.o. Jordan would likely kick the 39-y.o. Payton's ass, on the NBA senior tour.
I suspect a lot of the people on this board are too young to grasp the concept of an athlete being DONE. As JRich 4 MVP says, "the Dubs aren't in the business of giving people a fitting end to their career." The topic of this thread shouldn't even be a question.

Is th at possible? I'm of the opinion that he's totally washed up, but if he wants to come to training camp and prove us wrong, he's welcome to do that.
We would lose a little leverage in our attempt to "lowball" Saras into taking a buyout, since if we signed Payton we'd need a roster spot (we would be at 16 with payton and pietrus' qualifying offer) before the season starts.
And Saras can still play, as evidenced by his Euro performances...Payton has been done for a couple years now. His value is strictly as a novelty and "hometown" heartwarmer.

Hmmm
Looks like he's a legit 7 footer and honestly it wouldn't take much to be our second best player 7 foot or taller. If he came in to camp and impressed I could see them cutting POB outright to make a spot for him. Just looking at his stats it looks like he likes to shoot the three and is probably more of an outside player offensively.
Maybe someone can shed some light on this guy. Anyone have a better feel for this guys game? Can he rebound? Can he defend NBA centers? Is he even a center? I don't see a weight listed for him.

It becomes a choice between Payton, Pierce or
Assuming at least one of either MP2 or Sarunas comes back, there will be one roster spot. Would you rather use that for? An "upside" guy like Pierce or someone who has demonstrated an ability to contribute by playing to his strengthis in Bailey or a one-year-at-best former great?
From a long-term basketball standpoint, I can't even start the conversation, much less formulate a reasonable argument as to how Payton would be a net-positive at this point.
The leadership/mentor argument is a difficult one to make, considering the personalities that dominate the locker room on this squad (read: Jackson/Baron).
In a nutshell: No thanks on GP.

I agree GP over Jasi
Remember Kobe and Payton together about 5 yrs ago at the all star break? Kobe told the media that Payton was helping him gaurd smaller players and keep strong ball handlers in front of him. The next year Kobe had the best defensive year of his career, and he attributed his new technique and improvements to none other than the glove.
Not to mention D-Wade's announcement last off-season that he was going to work with Payton and improve greatly on his defense.
Besides, whats it going to hurt having a prideful vet who isnt afraid to scrap come playoff time? I dont know how he and Baron would get along or he and Jax since they both share that fire...but I am sure these men have alot of respect for eachother.
Let him teach Monta how to be a lock down, and let him be our insurance agent. Who here would agree with me on this?

the mentor schtick
Second, mentoring? don't we already have Baron and Nellie to mentor Baron?
Third, if we want Payton to be a mentor...let's just hire him as an assistant coach, or hire him as an offseason trainer for Ellis.
Questions? Complaints?

I dont think
For the mininum K, offer the guy a contract, let the old man push Monta to be a better player, let him holler at the youngster in practice and on the bench. I really think he can make him a better player. He's made other star player's better in this department.
I think Monta would relate to him more than Baron or Nellie anyways, and if you believe as I do that Ellis is part of our future, then it would be wise to assign all the help you can, before the upcoming off-season. A locker room presence, a teacher, someone who can push the young guys in practice... why wouldnt you do that, instead of a guy who rides the pine and doest make anyone else better in Jasi?
Payton doesnt want to be an assistant coach for GS. He wants to do that in Seattle. I thought he was very clear on that.

payton
Fine.
His FT% was 66.7%, worst of his career. Any explanation for that? Gary Payton cannot "still shoot".
Second, what evidence do you have that Baron/Nellie don't help Ellis improve? Isn't that speculation, just like it's speculation that Payon would be willing/able to help Ellis?
Third, how do you know who Ellis will relate to better? Payton's far older than Baron, so there is a generational gap (he's 40)
Fourth, Nellie yells at players plenty in practice- we certainly don't need help in that department. If Ellis needs ANOTHER guy to yell at him, then we need to seriously think about whether he's got his head on straight.
Fifth, giving Kobe a tip isn't the same as giving Motna Ellis a tip.
Sixth, if Payton doesn't want to be a coach for us, then so be it. He can head up to Seattle for however long they still have a team up there.
Seventh...Saras can play better than Payton at this point, although I suspect (hope) neither will be on the roster come October

first of all...
Being a Oakland native, I have pride in my city and would love for Gary to come back to the town and give whatever he has left. Ive always admired him as a player. I take pride in a hall of famer coming out of my city, as I hope most Warrior fans should.
SO WHAT if he yells at Monta during practice. Thats a good thing. What is this? last time I checked it was a mans league, and if your name aint chris webber, you shouldnt have problems with a hall of fame coach or player telling you what to do... But I could see why you would take that as a bad thing. (by the way, Nelson says hes toned it way down. Stop speculating)
I didnt say Nelson and Baron wont help Ellis improve. They have already obviously. Stop taking everything literally when I know that you know what I mean. Has Baron taken Ellis aside and spent hours with him after practice? I dont know.
Has Nelson put in the time too? Probably, but you or I still dont know any of that.
ALL I SAID, read carefully.
I would rather have GP for ONE/his last season, rather than Jasi.
Why?
Because I believe that Payton can work with Ellis, and improve his defensive game dramatically to a point where Ellis now impacts the game with his on-the-ball defense. We dont know if Gary can instill a pride in Ellis as well as a knowledge that could make him a great defender for the rest of his career. But it has happened with other players in the past...
and Jasi will not play for us. Nelson has refused to play him even when we were short and played a 7 man rotation. What makes you think Jasi will play at all next year? I wouldnt give a damn if Payton didnt play next year, but I do want his presence and paying 3 mil less for a bench player would be nice too...u think?
Age means absolutely nothing at all. I relate to people twice my age more than alot of people I know that are my own age. Times change, the people stay the same.
I said that he would relate to Payton better, because I believe that they share a similiar personality. And at this point in his career, Baron has much more to focus on rather than Ellis' individual benefit. At this point in Payton's career, he has ALL to offer Ellis. Gary's responsibilities on our team would be minimal.
If anything, Payton being old enough to be Ellis' father would be a plus, as I, as well as many other young men listen to those who have a wealth of life experience, rather than someone 6 yrs older than them.
How do you know Payton just gave Kobe a tip?
I mentioned that because Kobe said himself that Gary has helped him improve as a player. They WERE on the same team. Why would it matter if its Kobe or Ellis Payton's preaching to? Anyone could improve from a mulitple first team defender.
Player's have bad shooting years, and they have good ones, it comes and goes. That doesnt make anyone a bad shooter. Once youve got a shot, it stays with you for most of your natural life. Ryan Howard is about to set a record for strike outs this season. Does that make him a bad batter? Fact is, you nor I know who will have a good or bad shooting year. I would have loved to hear your reaction last year if I bumped into you and told you that Barnes would light up the stat sheet like he did this year. Youd tell me to go f*** myself. Doesnt matter.
Dont mean to sound rude or anything and I hope you dont take offense to this, but everytime I seem to have a discussion with u about ball... you got this lil smart ass attitude like you know so much more than the next guy. Whats with that?

payton
It's not fair to chalk it up to a singular bad year either, given that his FG% and 3P% have been horrible the past two years.
Beyond shooting, the rest of his game has noticeably fallen off as well: fewer steals and more fouls mean less athleticism; almost no FTA's mean his speed/quickness with the ball have pretty much disappeared. He's 40 years old; no shame in being a worse player now than he used to be.
- It's great that you have pride in Oakland. Props. But that does not take the place of analyzing whether Payton will help the team or not.
- You believe Payton can help Ellis. You're entitled to that belief. I disagree with it. It may or may not have happened in the past, but that's only minimally probative that it will happen here.
- I don't know what Kobe got from Payton. Neither do you. Therefore we have no idea whether doing the same thing will help Ellis or not; anything further is, again, speculation on your part.
- Age doesn't matter. Speculation on my part, sure. Your overriding point, though, is that Payton will somehow add something to Ellis' game; more than what he has already gotten or will get from resources we already have, including but not limited to Baron and Nellie.
- Saras v. Payton. Not the best comparison given Saras' situation with the team and Payton a mere rumor at this point. It's only relevant because Saras is currently holding on to a roster spot and Payton would be taking one away from someone else (whether Pierce, Bailey, POB, whomever).
- Me. Any attitude you believe I have is inference on your part; I highly doubt I'll be able to talk you into "liking" me or thinking differently, so I won't bother. If you want to get to know me, you're free to IM me as a number of members have, email me, or buy me a drink. Any of those means will suffice.
If I realize I am wrong, or it is shown that I am wrong, I will say that I will wrong (typo, missed fact, misunderstanding, me being an idiot, as in some CBA affairs). If I have changed my position, I will say why I have done so (i.e. Rasheed).
That's all there is on me, anything else can be discussed elsewhere, as this diary is about Payton

Baron's health
The need for a 3rd PG who can play is higher for us than with a healthy lead guard; it's much harder for us to blow a roster spot on a GP to chase his "mentoring" than it is for a veteran team or healthier team.
Obviously a 3rd guard wont be a stud, but a guy that can actually suit up and give us 15minutes (Payton can't do that) if it came to it would be nice.
Unless you guys wanna see Jackson as a PG...

I'm not really sure if getting GP would make much sense. Having said that, I wouldn't mind having him so long he accepts hanging out at the bench, playing a mentor role for Monta, at the bare minimum contract, playing maybe 10 minutes a game. If he shows any signs of greediness or disruption, then NO WAY to GP.
However, I've always had respect for him. Wish we had the old GP cuz he was SiCK bAck iN thE dAy!
