Miami and Atlanta to replay last 51.9 seconds

Talk about strange. The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat will replay the last 51.9 seconds of a ball game they had earlier this year at a metting in March. Have to say this is the first time I have ever seen something like this happen before. Atlanta is fighting for a playoff spot and if they end up losing this could come back to bite them in the butt big time.

For the first time since 1982, the NBA is sending two teams back to the court for a do-over.

The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat must replay the final 51.9 seconds of their game last month because the official scorer ruled incorrectly that Shaquille O'Neal fouled out, the league said Friday.....The NBA said the replay will be held before the teams' next scheduled game: March 8 in Atlanta. Play will start from the time after O'Neal's disputed sixth foul, with the Hawks leading 114-111.

This all seems pretty huge, I did not see the game or anything about it so I can't comment on it. But it will be interesting. Discuss

what i want to know
What happens to the money gamblers put down on this game? It had probably already been distributed to the winners, right? Do they perform a recall or something, and then hold on to the money until the game is replayed?
There is other stuff like who gets to be in attendance for the replay?

Very weird and messy situation.

I would believe
For the gambling, the game stands as is. In fact you probably can bet on the 51.9 seconds as a whole game. Now this will be played before their next meeting in Atlanta so those going to that game we allowed to be in attendance.

Now I think they should have to play this after the game. This way it would be closer to the last 51.9 seconds of the game.

The league has complained
about the Hawks scoring table before. They have apparently made a number of errors, including not counting baskets at critical times, in the recent past, so I can see why the league would take such drastic action in response to this.

that'll be fun to watch
although its an odd situation

so do they play the 51.9 before or after the game? what a heartbreaker that would be for either team if they receive 2 L's that night

is latrell sprewell gonna have to choke a b*tch?

before
but I think they should play after, so to make it closer to the last 51.9 of a game.

Shaq
What happens if Shaq is injured? Do they just play the game as it is without Shaq again or do the wave the game if Shaq can't play?

I wonder the same
That is a great question.

just in case
this is a serious question - shaq or no shaq they re-play

by hardcore on Jan 12, 2008 3:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

what's
the point of replaying the game if shaq isn't there.. the whole point is that shaq didn't foul out the final 51 seconds. If he isn't there when they replay wouldn't it be the same thing as when the game is first played.

the point
The point to correct the mistake- barring Shaq from playing due to a phantom foul.

That a different reason keeps Shaq out (injury) has no bearing.

If Shaq had been hurt that game, would the Heat get to reschedule the game?

There's probably a larger goal of deterring future misconduct than actually changing the result of the game.

By that time
the Heat are probably trying to tank for a high draft spot so they'll be more than happy to take 2 L's in one night.

My Ex
used to say that in the NBA, they should just play the last 2 minutes of a game because it always comes down to the end anyway.  This isn't too far off.  Forgive the Hawks score board dude.  He probably ate way too much Waffle House and Chick-O Fillet and couldn't concentrate.
