Draft Idea- Kevin Love?

Right now Love is 19 on nbadraft.net, which should be right around where the Warriors would pick. I am not totally sold on him coming out after just one year, especially if he is not looking like a lottery pick. This, of course, can all change if the guy has a monster NCAA's, but why not look at it?

PROS

  • The guy is a bruiser, rebounds well, and plays well close to the basket. According to everyone and their sister, this is the Warriors glaring weakness and what keeps them from being a legit title contender.
  • Great passer, esp w/ outlet passing, which would be HUGE imo with our style of play. Imagine Love whipping outlet passes to monta ahead of the defense. Free points!
  • He looks to be very capable with either hand around the basket, with put-backs and he has a very good back to the basket game. Very good, crisp footwork and post moves
  • I actually think Nellie would play him early in his career. This guy has pretty good basketball sense and I feel that even if he leaves after one year he is more prepared that most you will see in draft.
  • CONS
-He's not all that quick. Can he run with the Warriors? This is the biggest question mark in my opinion, and the most obvious one. If he is not quick enough that is a deal breaker
  • He is a little bit undersized, but i dont put too much stock in this. If you can play, you can play. talk to boozer, Jamison, Marion, and Iverson. ask how it worked for them.
  • Can he defend nba bigs? Big question mark. does he fit into to the Warriors style of d with the active hands and deflections? Not sure.
  • Anyway, this was just something i have been thinking about. I would be interested in what people have to think, especially optionzero.

Talking draft in January is hard habit for a Warriors fan to break!

I'm a UCLA fan i have to say kevin love would be great on this team. The only #1 big problem is that hes a bit slow... But he can crazy outlet pass and is a great rebounder 6 ft 10 inches 260 Pounds

Also he can shoot college 3's :P

    he's a "media guide" 6'-10"...
...take a look at him when he's standing next to guys supposedly 4" shorter.  uh uh.

    ughh
I go to UCLA and get to watch him play often.

To be quite honest, Kevin Love isn't going to have a big impact in the NBA.  He's able to be dominant in college because he can outmuscle everyone, he's alot thicker than most guys that are trying to stop him in the post.  But Kevin Love won't be able to do any of that against any decent NBA centers, it's just not going to happen.  He's just going to be a big, slow, unathletic yet fundamental big man.

He should stay in college as long as he can and win a few titles.  He does know how to play the game though, and he'll probably be a pretty solid backup somewhere in the NBA.  But I don't think he's the kind of guy that could come in here and solve any of our problems.

It was a nice idea though, but I don't think his game is going to translate well enough to the NBA to be able to help us out that much.

    Daren Collison
Isn't Daren Collison also declaring for the 2008 draft? He would be a great backup pg for us. But hes  gonna go fast

    darren collison
he won't go anywhere early in the first round...he wasn't amazing to begin with, and after his recent injury he's a lot slower. his speed was his selling point in the first place too.

    so...
This guy does not help with the warriors glaring weakness...which is close to the basket DEFENSE.  Biedrins is already effective on the offensive end, and the warriors already have enough offensive tools that they don't need your typical post threat.  They need someone that can DEFEND other team's bigs.

    I'm a draft junkie too
Compliments of being a Warriors fan through the thin years.

Love, imo is best suited as a reserve bigman.

The thing about being undersized. Players can make up for being undersized by having outstading vertical leaping ability and athleticism, long wingspan, or by out-muscling the competition.

By what i've seen, Love contains neither of these three assets that is key for undersized bigmen.

Another thing. The reason why guys like Boozer, Kaman, and Brand are effective given their limitations whether it be by height, length or athleticism, is by having at least one combination of these things. Plus these guys have all shown the great ability to use both hands extremely well so the defense can't play them to one side.

Love is overweight right now, so he could tone up his body and potentially increase his athleticism, muscle and vert.

Love, right now is extremely slow from side to side. He won't be able to matchup well with quicker 4's or take a guard or forward on a switch. He's also not tall enough to bang with traditional 4's and 5's. He CAN make up for this by gaining strength (he has a nice frame to add weight) and pushing big players off the block and into an uncomfortable spot on the floor.

Love is a good rebounder in college, but will his lack of length and athleticism affect that? He looks fundamental enough on blocking out to suggest he'll be decent, but not a rebounding machine like David Lee is.

Love has great touch around the basket, which would be an asset to the warriors. He also has range out to the college 3. He might be a good fit next to AB, seeing as how AB would take on the toughest frontcourt player on the opposing team. Plus, the warriors don't always look to shut the door on defense.

I wouldn't mind the warriors drafting him in the late teens area. But just don't expect him to be the next Boozer or Brand. Think more of a Sean May type of player to me.

Great point with the undersized players, I agree with that. I didn't really think it through. But thats what the message boards are for!

    Question for ya-
Players can make up for being undersized by having outstading vertical leaping ability and athleticism, long wingspan, or by out-muscling the competition.

Do u think that you can put having superb fundamentals in this conversion? Especially in the NBA where so many players have poor fundamentals, would that be something that could lift him to another level the same as leaping ability, wingspan, ect?

interested in your response! GREAT post, so good I've given two replies lol

    I really think
NBA defenders are just too good. On nights where he'll be smaller than the opposing 4-5's, he'll need to find a way of being effective. His fundamentals make him look good in college, but the NBA has the best and most blessed players in the world. He's going to need some kind of advantage that he can use against the opponent. It's what separates Boozer, Brand, from a player like Nick Collison.

    Another thing....
He shoots a pretty good percentage from the line. My buddy who is a UCLA fan is telling me around 77. Even if he is undersized, he has the potential to be fouled alot. When players are very sound with their post footwork and technique, they are almost impossible not to foul. Anyone that plays ball (whether high school, college, in the rec center or whatever)knows  guys that have crisp footwork are VERY difficult to keep up with and, like i said are nearly impossible to not to foul even on accident. IMO Love seems like a guy who can go to the line alot, even against more athletic player in the NBA.

    Great pick for the Dubs...
Would be another Pac-10 big man, Ryan Anderson from Cal. He's a more complete player than Love in my opinion in that he has incredible range, he passes very well, and he's an above average rebounder. I think he'd be a better fit for the Warriors because he has a nice, quick release and isn't afraid to pull the trigger when he's open. At 6-10, 240 it wouldn't be a stretch to play him at either forward spot. I'd love to see him stay close to home and play for the Warriors if he comes out.

    What about
Bay Area native and current Cal star DeVon Hardin? He would be able to run with us, get some nice dunks off BD's passes, play decent defense, and rebound. The only problem is he is currently projected at 16, too high for us based on our current standings.

I am a Cal fan and have been watching Harden since he arrived. I hate to say it, but he really just looks to be a workout wonder. His body looks great and he can do some amazing things, but has really been yet to put it together on the basketball floor. The only times I have seen him dominate are against teams with no semblance an athletic big man. I see him as being a backup center at best, with everyone wondering why this guy can't put it together. I hope I am wrong.

    Too high
I've seen him play at Cal (and in HS too, where he was a beast. But then again he towered over just about everyone). His offensive game really needs some polishing, but athletically he's leaps and bounds above most everyone else his size. Too bad he's ranked higher than he's worth, and at this rate, unless we miss the playoffs (or trade for 1st round pick) I doubt we would be able to grab him. Doesn't fit Nellie's mold either, because he won't be able to produce immediately; probably will need a year or two with his old teammate Rod Benson in the D-League to convert that athleticism into skill.

    I have seen him
compared to Tyler Hansbrough with the exception that Love has much better intangibles. The thing that worries most people about Love is his ability to defend against length, height, and weight issues. I don't see much upside in him and he isn't a known commodity in the NBA, so in drafting him you probably have a top level of being a solid contributor, with a fair chance of him being a bust.

    Love
If he fell to the second round, I'd take a chance on him.

    Reminds me of....
Harrington. PF that can shoot well, but is lackluster on defense and rebounding.

    As a UCLA fan
It would be amazing to see 3 Bruins on the Warriors, but I'm not sure if he's the best fit. What he would give us is outlet passing, rebounding, and some range, but he won't be able to run with the rest of the Warriors. I'm also not that sure his abilities translate too well to the NBA, because while he is skilled, NBA is turning more and more to athleticism, and he simply wouldn't be an athletic PF.
