Best aquisition of the season?

The best acquisition of the season has to be Sidney Moncrief. This guy took us from being one of the worst free throw shooting teams to being one of the best. There were times last season where our free throws would cost us the game. This season is a whole other story. In the last couple of months, our free throws are actually winning us ball games. Most of the credit has to be given to Sir Sid. Sid the Squid for MVP!

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Agreed
Our free throw shooting has gotten so much better.  As Mullin has pointed out, the main reason that the Warriors lost to the Jazz in the second round of the playoffs last year was not because of the huge rebound differential, but instead because of free throw shooting!

Props to Sid

they're still
18th in the NBA in team free throw shooting. uh definitely not one of the best...just not the worst anymore. Beans might be shooting much better at the charity stripe than last year, but a FT% in the 60s is still terrible.

context of FT%

The Warriors are now essentially an average FT shooting team.  People fret over FTs because the misses are conspicuous and, late in games, they make a big difference.  However, there's very little correlation between a team's FT% and their record.  There is a much better (though still not great) correlation between how often they get to the line and their record.  Yes, shooting poorly hurts in close games at the end, but much more often, other aspects dictate that games aren't particularly close long before this comes into player.

A FT% of 60% is terrible compared to what other players shoot, but think of it this way:   A 60% FT shooter (considered lousy) will, on average, get 1.2 points when they shoot two at the stripe.  A 55% shooter from the floor (considered quite good, regardless of position) will, on average, return 1.1 points per FG attempt.  The FT shooters who are bad enough that fouling makes sense are very, very rare.   Biedrins is a special case in that his FG% (and rate of return) is higher than his FT% so fouling to prevent a basket (provided it does prevent the basket) may make sense.  I'd rather have him shoot from the floor than from the line.  But most of the time for the vast majority of players, any trip to the line is a good thing.

I never made a correlation between FT% and record
I simply stated that Bean's is still a terrible free throw shooter and to call the Warriors a great freethrow shooting team is irresponsible. A justification for fouling him based on .1 points per attempt is a different arguement, one which is valid yet not praticularly riviting. I was simply calling out the author of the diary for being a blatant homer and criticizing his glorification of the Infallible Warriors Coaching Staff. So far, the new shooting coach has done slightly better than the last with one player.

Also the fact that Baron shoots around 75%, for a shooter with his touch, is a tragedy.
