Coach Jim Barnett

Everytime I watch a telecast, Jim Barnett amazes me.
I know he's been around a while, but he notices so many things that most people wouldn't.

One of his best observations is usually one of the opposing player's preference to go right or left - i.e. Brandon Roy and CP3.

Does anyone know if he has input on the team? In case nellie or the staff doesn't notice these things, I am constantly screaming at the TV, "GO TELL NELLIE and the PLAYERS!!!"

I don't know where
I heard this but from one of his telecasts, he stated that during some timeouts he'll pass notes over to the coaching staff...

He does tell the coaches sometimes
The thing about coaching in the NBA is that the players have to respect you or else it does not matter what you have to say.

I agree with 95% of Jim's basketball philosophy, but he's not going to get the players' respect. His personality is waaaaaay too old-school to mesh with today's NBA player.

I'm probably Jim's #1 fan, but even I admit he couldn't survive as a head coach unless it was a young young team and even then his personality would wear on people.

no one said anything
about barnett meshing with the players or taking over as head coach and demanding respect, just asking if he might give nellie a few tips or a little advice

Right. I said he does give the coaches tips
Then I took the idea "one step further". But thank you for going all Olden Polynice on me.

I was joking about the coaching
I just meant that he has such detailed observations, I would hope it doesn't go to waste.

Sometimes it's even a little scary when he calls something out before it happens.

Maybe they can just have Russell Turner, Rico Hines or one of the assistants listening to the telecast for tips. :)

Barnett
Sometimes it's even a little scary when he calls something out before it happens.

He does that alot!  I also agree that his personality might wear thin with players, on the same note, I think he has been in his career niche for around 23 years in broadcasting??? and he is probably best (coaching) just giving little in game notes and what not.

I wouldn't want anyone else doing his job after the league pass (Comcast) allowed us to watch other broadcasters from around the league...

I also think that one of the main reasons why I always stuck with the Dubs even through all those loosing seasons was Barnett's insights.

Because he has alot of insightful BBall knowledge it makes it easier to watch a pitiful games, he never seems to go off topic for very long and always finds a way to engage in basketball history or stats without being boring...

true talk
Barnett and Fitzgerald are exemplary broadcasters. Their chemistry is contagious. Fitzgerald was an excellent replacement for Papa.

oh damn!
Papa was pretty dope to!!!

Papa
Greg Papa was one of the most exciting radio announcers I have ever heard (even made the raiders sound good).

Jim and Bob are some of the best in the NBA for a broadcast team. Listening to some of the other broadcasters in the league, I am very happy to have them on our side.

Barnett = pro, Fitz = kid brother trying too hard
to be cool like the big kids.  i've been trying to figure out how to mod my entertainment equipment to layer Tim Roy over Fitz with Barnett on color.  no luck yet.  pay close attention to the postgame where they all weigh in, and pick out which of the 3 sounds least professional, informed, sure of himself, etc.  Fitz comes in handy once a game when we cap a 9-0 run with a breakaway dunk and he treats us to a little Gus Johnson.  otherwise, he's all stats and sarcasm, and you want to just choke out that s-eating grin that becomes almost audible behind his "analysis."  Papa by a LANDSLIDE.  all the youtube pieces we've been dropped over the years remind you just how good Barnett is, and for how long he's been so.  how many play-by-play guys has he left on the shoulder (he was on the Sleepy Floyd gamecast for goodness sake)?!

BTW, 12-3 is FM time for me every afternoon, and it pains me to no end to have to switch off of KNBR.  the amount of alternate ideas Rod and Bob blind themselves to because of how absolutely in love each of them is with their own thoughts on things is nauseating.

Speaking of coaching....
Lost in all these winning business weve been doing (something very new to us Ws fans) is the distinct possibility of Jedi Master Nelly leaving after this season.  With that said, who out there has the credentials or the talent to replace our bench tactician for the 08-09 season if he does leave?

Barnett (yes)
Smart (maybe)
Elie (yes)
Larry Brown (maybe)
Rick Barry (yes)
Paul Silas (yes)
Lenny Wilkens (no)
Fratello (no)

Nellie has said several times he has been grooming Keith Smart for the job, a la Avery Johnson.

and we all know
how avery johnson turned out..screws up on ever playoff... soon the warriors will be on a championship drought instead of a playoff drought

dallas was not a championship contender under nellie. they are one under avery. dallas is a fantastic team, they just ran into the wrong player (baron), coach (nelson), and the warriors were unconscious during the playoffs. avery is a fine coach.

yeah but..
from what ive seen im not sold on Keith just yet.  He really ddnt do anything in his first coaching job in cleveland (of course not entirely his fault.)

agreed
Barnett and FItz definitely are damn good broadcasters. i live down in socal with no league  pass (definitely getting it next year) and im forced to watch the fakers every night,  and maybe its just that i hate everything associated with that team but their guys suck

by 3Kings650 on Jan 31, 2008 1:24 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Im down in the Southland too..
SO I feel your pain... luckily for the both of us, The Warriors are getting more national exposure on TNT and ESPN due to their success last year. I've been down here for about 5 years, and gone stretches where I've been lucky to catch 3-4 games a year... I settle for watching a lot of Faker games too. As much as I hate the team, I enjoy weatcing Turiaf and Farmar (and recently Ariza) play... Depending on the night, I can actually pick up KNBR on 680 while driving home on the 405, its pretty choppy which can make it really frustrating...

Fitz
Fitz can get annoying sometimes with the numbers.

Typical Fitz comments:
"You know Jim, the warriors shot 35% in the first quarter, they're 2-12 on 3's, baron has only 1 pt, steven jackson has 2 pts, and they're only down 12!"

Everytime the warriors go through a dry spell, he has to make a comment like the above. I can feel Barnett rolling his eyes sometimes.

The _____ can't play any better/worse!
It would bring me great joy if he never said that again.

Jim Barnett
I have league pass and I watch a lot of other games in addition to the Warriors. Jim Barnett is by far the most honest and unbiased color man in the business (who is employed by a team). Granted he shows love to the Warriors but he isn't a flat out homer like most other announcers in the league. It drives me crazy when I have to listen to the other teams announcers during an away game. Every call against their team is a bad call, every Warrior is a thug - but Jim will say it's a bad or good call regardless of who it benefits. He will also call out the Warriors when they play like sh!+. I have said this before on this board but I met him 15 years ago a Nellie's b-ball camp in San Francisco and he can straight ball. He was taking kids half his age to school on the court - playing two against one.

Barnett
I used to hate the guy because he is so old school, until I moved to chico and had to listen to the kings announcers. The one guys stupid catch phrases like 'someone turn on the sprinklers because he's on fire', 'if you don't like that you don't like NBA basketball', and my least favorite 'bibbalicious' made me turn the volume off. Listening to these goof balls made me realize I took Barnetts analysis for granted.

potential great high school coach
When you are 14-18 you really need someone with the fundamental knowledge Barnett has and the passion to help young players.  I always love Barnett's attitude towards seeing new talent develop, or young players make athletic moves to the hoop.  He doesnt say that looked like shit/he travelled. Barnett just says some form of wow that was awesome, but he should have used the backboard.

If Barnett ever decided to get into high school ball he would probably have 100 win streak ala De La Salle football team.

barnett
should not be a coach but a psychic. its so scary to how he sees a play 20 seconds before it happens and gets it 100% right. its like hes playing a real life video game and telling them what to do!
What you thought that I only played basketball? I AM A Golden State WARRIOR!

Barnett is IMO one of the best sports broadcasters of all time. He's so insightful and he makes the Dubs that much more enjoyable to watch. What I really like about him is his honesty, he'll tell it like it is no matter if it's good or bad for the Dubs, he's not one of these homers that are annoying as hell to listen to. What's nice too is he's actually played in the NBA and knows what it's like, he's not one of the guys who just says BS to say it, he's got experience in the league. Fitz is alright, he compliments Jim well, even if he is a little dorky kid with ADD. I like that game against he Pacers where we had 12 steals and Fitz wouldn't stop about the steals record in the quarter and Jim basically told him to STFU about it.
