Patrick O'Bryant
It's really early. And expectations are a lot different for Celtics fans. We're just hoping O'Bryant can be a back up center. On top of that he's signed to a reasonable contract (just under $800,000) for this year. That's very different to when he joined Golden State as the #9 pick. However, the overriding opinion so far has been that, at the very least, O'Bryant is not terrible. He's rebounded a bit, blocked a few shots and show a developing post game. Once again, not a ringing endorsement. But was Golden State just the wrong place for him? Is he going to fall apart when the season starts? Am I missing something?
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I think one of the biggest knocks against Patty’o was that he had a bad work ethic. But mostly I think he came into the wrong system and he might just do ok with the Celtics. Plus he isn’t coming into the Celtics as the #9 pick so the expectations are obviously low.

POB
You should look back at the previous fanposts on POB. We had a few recent ones that i’m sure you can easily find. A lot of Warriors fans have already given up on Patrick because of how bad he was in Golden State, and because of how they worship everything that Nellie says. Me however, I still believe in Patrick and i’m confident he’ll develop into a good player under Doc and KG. Your team is very lucky to have him, he’s a diamond in the rough.

if and only if
he decides to give a crap and play hard, then yeah, maybe he plays well. let’s be honest about this, guys don’t just hit the motivation switch. he’d much prefer to coast through on his ‘talent’ and look where it’s gotten him. i know he wasn’t a great fit here, but if the warriors thought that he had both the talent and the drive to be even a rotation player, he’d have seen some time. al harrington was playing backup center for the dubs last year. al harrington! he couldn’t have beaten him out? come on, the guy was an undersized pf playing as a ridiculously undersized c and POB sat. i know the celtics aren’t super deep in the middle, so they’ll give him a shot during the preseason, but when he doesn’t hustle or defend, he’ll find himself at the end of the bench again.

Garbage O' Bryant
I’ve seen this cat all over the bay. Kickin it hard in clubs and partying up. He is a human being that has been giving a blessing by the good lord to play pro basketball, and on the flip side he’s done nothing to take advantage of this. He’s probably the laziest, most confused, fragile, thinks he’s hard and ghetto. That’s why he couldn’t kick it in Oakland, he had to go to Walnut Creek and stuff. Overall O’ Bryant should do ok with the C’s, but again he’s lazy and not focused so you never know. Good luck C’s. lol.

I happen...
…to be of the mind that his talents were obvious, his alleged lack of work ethic was, at least in game, not particularly obvious, and that Don Nelson giving up on a player is blatantly obvious. I like Don Nelson, and I’d argue he’s a legendary coach by any objective measure. That said, his mentality about basketball is simply not helpful in terms of developing a true center prospect like O’Bryant. There are extreme arguments to be made on both sides; Nelson’s detractors will insist he’s poison for rookies, which is probably more damning than need be. I would certainly argue that rookie big men, by virtue of Nelson’s system, aren’t liable to get much burn. Granted Chris Webber had a great rookie year under Don, but we all know how that turned out, and Dirk Nowitzki didn’t particularly set the league ablaze his first year. But, I’m veering off onto a tangent, here.
O’Bryant has a few areas in which his physical stature make him a plus player presuming even a modest amount of effort on his part. He has otherworld reach, I seem to remember the scouting report saying he had one of the best wingspans in the NBA. He’s a legitimate seven footer, which seems to be important as I understand it. While he got all too few minutes for us, I saw enough of his play to get the impression that he has a number of unrefined but instinctually sound post moves, and he flashed a pretty looking hookshot now and again. He has somewhat impressive vertical lift given his size, and on a strong inside team could be a very productive rebounder. His shotblocking instincts aren’t very good, but he’s still such a rangy body that he should be able to get a few swats on help defense. Ideally, the dream scenario for somebody built like O’Bryant would be to try to learn the Skyhook; I seem to remember hearing that he’d fooled around with it at one time or another, but if there’s anybody who can convince him to devoting a whole summer to it, that could really be something special.
Given the locker room that the Celtics have, as well as the example set by Garnett for those big men, I expect a good solid year for O’Bryant, and if he gets enough chances, I think he could supplant Kendrick Perkins over the next few years.

I agree with almost everything you just wrote vis a vis Nelson. I still doubt that the POB will ever be much of a player, but I think when Nelson got that in his head, he decided that he didn’t even want to take the time to develop him into a marginal (which can still mean somewhat valuable) rotation player. As bad as he was as a rookie in garbage time, it didn’t look like this was a mistake, but he was a better player as 2nd year player and Nelson did not reward the improvement at all.
As for his situation with the Celtics, it may be a wakeup call and may be a better fit, but I’d hesitate to say that Garnett’s example will mean much. Garnett managed to play alongside some lousy centers in Minn, none of whom seemed to become more than that by seeing Garnett play regularly. If the POB is to find his place, he’ll have to do it on his own.

I happen to be of the same mind.
There is a possibility he doesn’t work out, but we gave up on him way before we could have been able to determine that.

Of course he'll be better
When you have 3 HOF playing all you have to do is stay on the court. He will work there because they play slow and POB is slow/lazy. I don’t care how the guy does but he just wasn’t a good fit for the Warriors style!

Celtics are a much better fit
The kid just wanted to play and was unfortunate enough to be drafted into a team with a coach that has an aversion to playing rookies. I’m sure whatever “attitude” he had developed from being a fixture on the Warrior’s bench for so long. Now he has a coach that is willing to give him a fair shake and work with him, unlike Nellie who has no conception on how to motivate and develop young players.

Welcome to Bakersfield
POB had the chance to prove himself by dominating the D league. He failed to impress there, so why would Nellie expect him to do much in the NBA? He may have been pissed or depressed, but at some point his pride or his agent would have told him he better kick ass down there. A “legitimate” 7-footer should be able to average a dbl-dbl in D league.
Not certain what his 3rd year salary would have been if the Dubs guaranteed it, but it was at least double what the celtics paid. It’s possible they got a deal. And we certainly saved cap space.

Don Nelson
+
7 foot raw rookie he didn’t draft
=
warm bench
It’s that simple. Have fun with your not terrible to halfway decent 7th man best case scenario backup center. And I mean that in a jealous way.

i agree
we better not extend nellie… avery is available. i’d rather have him or anyone who plays more traditional. fratello, flip, even musselman… at least our bigs would finally get to play. i hope rowell gets rid of nelson and his enabler, mullin – maybe we can lure van gundy.
he actually has 6 rings via the Celtics, he should play more like them.

i forgot to add
the only reason avery was so “good” was because of the situation he was in. he took don nelson’s old team and kept them the same for a season and half. then the next one he didn’t do such a great job. he wouldn’t be able to take the Warriors from two seasons ago (which by the way weren’t so great) and make them a 48 win team like Nelson did.

playing traditional
is a great way for most teams to downplay their strengths and show off their weaknesses. do the vast majority of championship teams run a more traditional lineup? of course, because given ideal roster, that’s the type of team that wins. who would you suggest play in a warriors “traditional” lineup? the team just isn’t setup well to play that way.
they would need a pure point distributing (someone they don’t have), and a couple bigs who can create their own shot in the post and/or d up the opposition on the block (biedrins is a solid defender and turiaf can play defense too, but they don’t have a standard low post scorer, those are second chance points types of players) and an all world wing player who carries the bulk of the scoring with his lock down defender running mate (accepting applications for either job). that’s just not the roster the dubs have. be happy that nelson is willing to see where his team’s strengths are and roll with them.
the man’s a great coach and far better than any of the possibilites you mentioned. remember how he worked the little general in the first round a couple years back? i’m fairly certain the warriors didn’t have the more talented roster, they had the better gameplan. thanks nellie.

you guys have a good player for an extremely cheap price. It is a no-loss situation for u guys. He wasn’t given a chance with nelli-ball and he has developed pretty nicely. I think he will be pretty good for u guys.
