Who should be starting PG or play most of the minutes?

I personally really like Demarcus Nelson because he is a defensive prowless and is athletic. It also looks like he is a good passer and is a good fit in our system? Others point to Marcus Williams as the answer. However it looks like he isn't ready to play for the warriors and he hasnt been to great with the ball( 4 turnovers, 6 assists in 54 minutes). CJ does not have too much point guard skill in my oppinion but is a nice combo guard. Stephen is a good playmaker but does not have the point guard instinct but would cause huge matchup problems for other teams defensively. So now i want your vote. Who should be Starting PG for the Dubs? Or who should receive most playing time.

Who should be starting PG

Boom dizzle, but since he’s not here one of the 2nd tier guys will hafta do. I think we need to see how they play in real games before we make a decision. CJ played pretty good in limited minutes last year IIRC? but Nelson has looked pretty good in spring training games so far.

Dennis Johnson

but DNelson is the best option available right now

= there are still cuts around the league to be made
= Williams can still show he can do the job
 = until Monta gets back
+ until coach gets pissed at his rookie PG

I can totally understand

voting for D. Nelson, but anyone who voted for Williams or Jackson over Watson, DID NOT watch any of the pre-season games. Watson has GREATLY improved since last season! Hopefully Williams can start in the future because the kid can ball! And Jackson should play point forward to throw off the D. But come on folks, give Watson some
L-O-V-E!

How so?

Bucks have some good on ball defenders. I can tell you in Nellie’s system Nelson better be good at shooting 3s. Because the current career … oh wait he’s never played in the NBA. CJ Watson is a D-League vet, and someone who was with the team almost all of last year.

Im sure this will also HELP Bellinelli’s development… by stealing minutes… because he will not be playing PG.

Nelson

“If Chris Paul was in town today, he would be matched up against the undrafted rookie out of Duke. Does that spell doom for the Warriors? Or is DeMarcus Nelson the best chance the Warriors have at this point? He certainly maybe the best chance defensively. He’s big and physical and defensive-minded. When’s the last time the Warriors had that at point guard?”

uumm...

about half a year ago. boom-dizzle bbaabbbyyyyyy. big, physical little more offensive minded…BUT he did have average the 2nd most steals per game! (behind CP3 of course.)

When the last time we had a rookie point guard produce a winning season?
My guess is that Marcus Williams will look a lot better than the rook once we get into real games. A little NBA experience is a lot better than none. CJ even has one year more then DMark.
Nelly likes to play mind games, a couple of years ago he said Dumbleavey would be his point forward.

I liked that..

Although he is not popular around here, if you look at Indiana the way they are using Dunleavy he was ballin’ last year. We kept wanting to make him this physical half court SF lol. The dude went to Duke, is a coaches son, and looks like that panzy that plays Spiderman, what did you expect?

I hope DeMarcus success, I just think CJ is ready to go now, starting DeMarcus tells me "hey, were just happy to win 30 games. PLAYOFFS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS? WERE TRYING TO WIN A GAME… DONT TALK TO ME ABOUT…PLAYOFFS? …. PLAYOFFS? "

Jim Mora is hysterical.

Depends on who we're playing.

DeMarcus is a good match against N.O. because of his D and CP3. Against teams that like to play up tempo(and don’t have a great PG) I would think CJ is a better choice becasue he is most familiar with the O and has the best O game. Marcus has the best true pg skils, but he’s playin catch up. I woul dlove to see it all start to really click this last week so we can have three solid PG’s with three different sets of skills.

Although once Monta’s back, they’re all ridin pine.

Maybe one of them will prove themselves and allow Monta to come off the bench til he’s 100%. Cause we all know once that fools around 80+ he’s in a uni on the court.

I haven't watched much preseason

has DeMarcus Nelson gotten a LOT better?

Being an avid UNC fan and therefore fairly interested in Duke basketball, I remember a very undersized shooting guard who couldn’t shoot, didn’t do a lot of ball handling and too small to be a lockdown defender. He was athletic and would throw down a few, but Greg Paulus (the point guard for Duke) did all of the playmaking and shooting. I’d smile every time Nelson launched from the corner because he could never make that shot. Now that he’s a 1 I don’t imagine him being stuck in that corner very often, but forget about stretching the floor when he’s playing….

by antihero on Oct 22, 2008 1:21 AM PDT reply actions

I never watched him at Duke

but from what I saw at the game against the Thunder, he’s just a big PG who’s pretty good on D and very physical. Apparently Don likes him because he’s loud and vocal, but I can guarantee if CJ Watson was his size he would be starting instead of Demarcus. Don Nelson just likes big PGs (Baron Davis)

Those big point guards like Tim Hardaway and Steve Nash were the foundation of their teams!

by jae on Oct 22, 2008 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

uh....

That may be true in the past, but in today’s NBA you need a BIG PG to survive. Dont even bring up Paul and Parker, because they are heavily protected by their teammates.

Tim Hardaway was a bull. Make no mistake no one wanted anything to do with him.

And this is why Monta is regarded as a “work in progress”.

by sjboy on Oct 22, 2008 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

thats why?

and here I thought it was because he needed to develop as a more of a distributor. silly me.

by sam23 on Oct 24, 2008 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok seriously

This is yet another move as to why Don Nelson is regarded as a great and not exactly bright coach.

CJ Watson won this job, Nellie said so himself it was his to lose… as far as I can tell he did nothing to lose it, and DeMarcus played more minutes in pre-season. I dont know if at practice CJ Watson told Nellie to go on a diet, or to lay off the Steak…. but something happened here.

Demarcus will be a turnover machine. His Ball-Handling is not stellar, oh yeah he played for Duke…. IM sure he can go 82 games of running like a cheetah for Nelson.

Then again, Nelson is the same guy who made Nash 13ppg, and 7apg, and when he left Nellie he became a 2 time MVP.

Way to go Don.

by sjboy on Oct 22, 2008 3:27 PM PDT reply actions

I read somewhere

that D Nelson wasn’t even a Point Guard at Duke, which is funny.

I find the whole discussion of, until Monta gets back pretty funny as well, because if Monta was healthy, it would all be: can Monta run the point?

Everyone was skeptical about him playing PG and thought that perhaps Williams would take his role eventually. Now that he is hurt though, he is the PG solution. Didn’t Nellie give SJAX and Barnes the ballhandling duties when Baron went out last year, even gave it to CJ over Monta.

It should be interesting when Monta comes back though..

by belli nellie on Oct 22, 2008 3:58 PM PDT reply actions

Good point on Barnes and Jax

In an interview with NBA TV Mullin said the Offense would run through Jack. Again why I am puzzled as to why they would start Nelson instead of Watson. CJ will spread the floor, Nelson will close it.

At any rate, I am more excited then dissapointed about the team this year. GO RANDOLPHICUS !!!
