11th in the west?

The recent ESPN Western Confrence preview notes that 10 sports analysts predict Golden State to be (on average) the 11th in the west for the 2008-2009 season. This means that most of them believe the Clippers will be head of us. In fact Chris Sheridan thinks the Clippers with be 6th in the West!

Why all of this loss of faith in the warriors? Sure we lost Bdiddy. But really? I hope I'm not putting my foot in my mouth come June, but I think we still are a definite contender for the number 8 spot. I mean we did shut them up when they thought the Mavs would finish us in 4 in 2007.

Maybe I'm just living on a whole lot of hope but what do you guys think?

clippers 6th !!!???!!!

That has got to be a joke….they lost their 2 best players and replaced them with baron and camby. What makes them think they will be that much better ???

As for us, you can’t expect anyone to give us much of a chance given our tumultuous off season. However I still think we have a slight chance of competing for the 8th. Injuries do occur and no one does better with an underdog than Nelie.

beware of the 8

The Clippers lost Brand, but they didn’t have him last year either due to injury. It’s much more like they lost their best player from last year and moved in Camby and Davis in place. Baron is a bigger plus than losing Maggs is a minus and Camby isn’t really replacing Brand. He’s replacing whatever stiff was taking Brand’s minutes while he was rehabbing. I think 6th is over-rating them too, but they should be better than last year if Camby and Baron play.

by jae on Oct 23, 2008 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

the clippers are a playoff-calibur team

i saw eric gordon play the other night; he is the absolute real deal, and surely a contender for ROY. baron-esque. not to mention baron. camby for nothing; thornton. the team is good.

by steelekord on Oct 23, 2008 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

The Clips are not only old but they are physically and een more mentally fragile.

Their coach is a dictator who gets on players nerves and they all wanted out. Brand magette on and on. On top of that htye are the Clippers! They will lose 50 games and Baron will play in about 50. That team is wayyyyyyyyyy overraaaaaaatttttedddd!!!!!!

by smearthebeard on Oct 23, 2008 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Lets evaluate those two replacements

Baron Davis is better than Maggette, but if you think about it, Barons numbers are definetly going to go down since I doubt the Clippers will even be scoring 100 a game. Also, Baron is out for a bit for the beginning of the year (Not sure how long) so the Clippers don’t have a point gaurd to start the season (Eric Gordon will not do very good). So overall, even though the Clippers definetly got a better player, you have to wonder if it will help them THAT much this season. Now lets look at the next replacement.

Elton Brand changed to Marcus Camby. Bad. Camby being a 34 year old center that will likely play power forward. Last year, in an uptempo style he averaged 9 points a game. His rebounding is nice, his blocking is nice, but apart from that, there isn’t much else available. In losing Elton Brand, they lose an actual power forward who is 29 years old, averages 20 points a game throughout his career, along with 2 blocks a game.

I think the Clippers are worse than they were last year, especially since their only player off the bench that MIGHT be good is going to be starting for a bit at one of the most difficult positions. The Scissors have absolutely no bench.

Chris Sheridan

Is not the sharpest tool in the shed. I read his column a couple years back talking about how Rafael Araujo was going to solidify the Toronto frontcourt. I think he should stick to stats and big paychecks, because thats all he does over there.

If you’re looking for good non-biased B-Ball information Ric Bufford is the way to go.

11th? Maybe, but the Clippers 6th? LOL. Oh man, atleast now we know everyone smokes weed at ESPN.

Al Thornton.

If he breaks out they may get at least 8th. Depending on Camby and Baron being healthy that is.

lol

thats the same as saying what if Randolph/B. Wright breaks out?

Thornton is nice, but dont mistake 1 – 2 great dunks a week for a legit PF in the WEstern Conference. You know who else is playing PF this year in the West? Amare Stoudamire. He has a long way to go.

by sjboy on Oct 23, 2008 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

lol

Your logic is flawed. Unlike our two Forwards, Thornton has a better squad around him. Baron will be solid if healthy, giving Thornton many more scoring ops. He’ll be the 2nd leading scorer after Baron. Camby and Kaman will be an excellent duo under the basket. Gordon will do well off the bench if Ricky doesn’t start.

You know who else is playing PF this year in the West? Amare Stoudamire. He has a long way to go.

Does a 6 year vet really have a long way to go? Who’s been elected to 3 All Star Games, 3 All Pro Teams, and has been ROTY? I don’t think so.

by ejdacanay on Oct 23, 2008 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok Ill go easy

You misunderstood everything I just said. Ill start with the Amare Comment: I ment thats the competition that he will go up against nightly, and that Amare played Center previously, now he will beat up on guys like Thornton.

You are also acting like they have great chemistry, and you must clearly only be looking at #s because Kaman and Camby play EXTREMELY similar games. Which means 1 thing, they will be running into each other, and will struggle to do anything else.

They are both liabilities on offense, so expect alot of 3 second violations.

You see gold, I see crapa. You think Kaman and Camby are going to be running with Baron? lol

Dont even get me started on Dunleavy’s weaksauce offensive schemes. Dont forget that team won 23 games last year. Minnesotta won 22…The team’s leader in 3 point shooting was Mobley at 34% lol. They did not upgrade in that dept as well.. Having Baron and and Camby will not boost you 30 wins ( which is what it will take to be 6th I am guessing.)

I am sick of people thinking Camby is this machine on defense. He was on a squad that wanted NO PART in rebounding and playing defense. He got lots of minutes at center and racked up the rebounds and blocks. If you look at his team, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE DOING ANY OF THAT. Didnt the Nuggets give up 110+ pts a game? lol

He will get schooled again.

remember

when Baron would dish it to Biedrins? replace Biedrins with Kaman and see Kaman’s scoring average double

Look I know people are pissed that baron went to the Clips. Im pretty sure everyone wouldve felt better if he went to the east.. The Clippers are head and shoulders better than the Warriors I don’t know why many of you dont see that.

Now you’re saying that Kaman has Biedrins hands. Dont insult Imustbreakyou!

I am not pissed, I am relieved. He gave us 2 good years, but the way he left the Hornets was crappy. His work ethic is crappy.

The thing about Baron Davis is he is so damn likeable. How can you not get a pudgey, and 1 handles, beard growing, slam dunk in your face so. cal guy?

However reality bites like a locked jaw…he is who we thought he was. ( thanks Dennis Green ) Deceitful, abrasive towards coaches, and is not fully committed.

He is the PG version of Lamar Odom. Tons of talent, 0 committment, therefor, he will always be involved in the should of, could of ,would of topic.

Clippers 6th-no way!

The Dubs should finish between the 8-10 spot. 80% chance they won’t make the playoffs. 20% chance to make the playoffs. The reason being that they lost Baron and won’t have their best player in Monta until January. God love the rest of the crew, but from all the preseason games I’ve seen and looking at their roster on paper, they might just fall into the 11th spot.

its a funny thing what can happen if Oden snaps his knee, Houston gets into more injury issues, San Antonio is older… oh and where are we putting the Nuggets in all this? As far as I am concerned, they are going to get waxed next year.

No Camby? LOL. Layup Galore! Don Nelson and Mike D’Antoni’s Defensive schemes think that shit is out of control!

by sjboy on Oct 23, 2008 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

It's just preseason

so you can’t really make that judgement. The starters don’t play the minutes that they would in a regular season game. Plus, preseason is to see where your team stands and what adjustments you need to make.

by Golden Boy on Oct 23, 2008 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Let them predict that

The games still have to be played. Unknowns can become big-time factors. Look at David West and Janero Pargo of the Hornets last year.

by Golden Boy on Oct 23, 2008 3:48 PM PDT reply actions

Hum... the way I see it

The warriors are looking at a 42-40 season. Conisdering 48 wins wasn’t enough last year I’m sure 42 would put them right around 10th or 11th in the West (6th if they were magically put in the East).

A Sonics fan without a team.. Though I'm auditioning GS Warriors this season.

by mcwalter44 on Oct 23, 2008 3:57 PM PDT reply actions

42 wins woul dget us in this year. Other than the top 4-5 teams the 6-8th teams will be

winning less games then last year. Why? Some of the top west teams are getting long in the tooth and fragile. Also is Dallas, Phoenix, Portland, Denver really that good. NOPE!

At the very least it is open to debate.

Since it is debateable it is not that far fectched that the warriors could be as good as those teams. The games are yet to be played. I still like our chances until proven otherwise.

Depth, Depth and Don Nelson mismatches, 44 wins = 7th seed west, east is much stronger this year

I believe we win 44 and get 7th seed, already look at all the injuries out there, we are not alone in having an injured star, and with a more competitive east this year that means less wins for the mid-upper tier clubs, and very likely more injuries as more teams are playing harder and closer games mean less substitutions.

and lets look at the clippers roster this year

C- Chris Kaman/ Brian Skinner
PF – Marcus Camby/Tim Thomas
SF – Al Thornton/Ricky Davis
SG – Cuttino Mobley/Eric Gordon
PG – Baron Davis/Jason hart

Then 2 other players that nobody cares about.

The Warriors definitely look better than them even without Monta

C – Andris Biedrins/Ronny Turiaf
PF – Al Harrington/Anthony Randolph/Brandan Wright
SF – Corey Maggette/ Kelenna Azubuike/ Anthony Randolph
SG – Stephen Jackson/Marco Bellinelli
PG – Demarcus Nelson/ Marcus Williams/ CJ Watson

In my opinion, that roster definitely looks better. Especially when looking at depth. Demarcus and Marcus will both be fighting for playing time hopefully and giving their all every day. Especially Demarcus since he should be playing like he might not even have a contract the next day. Marcus should be trying his best to show that he is a legitimate NBA player and that he was worth the first round pick. Then you have Randolph and Wright who are going to be fighting for playing time too.

What I am saying is that, too me, pretty much all of the starters on the Clippers are givens because they have nobody better at that position, and they might slack off. Every single Warriors is going to be playing their best game to get as much playing time as they can.

Finally, Warriors>Clippers.

with monta out I think we will still be fighting for the 8th spot with the blazers, injuries have so much to do with what happens in the west this year. The nuggets will not make the playoffs, Baron will ofcourse be baron in Clip land but it seems like such a strict system down there which makes me think he wont be as good there

I think 10th is being generous....

Am i the only one that forgot how much we blew without Baron on the court last year? Couple that with the loss of Monta and we are going to be pretty awful.

I can see the Warriors going from a 48 to 30-32 win team this year. I think it is going to get real ugly and there will be many a blow out this year. I can see a team like Sacramento being better than us this year and even a team like Minnesota giving us a run for our money.

The only team I feel comfortable playing against in the regular season is Oklahoma City and maybe Memphis. This is going to be a frustrating, hard to watch season.

Consider the upgrades...

… and the losses.

We couldnt rebound. WE could score.

Our lineup I believe can still score, and now were alot bigger, which should help with rebounding. We will compete. No you’re not the only one who thinks the Warriors will suck, but then again, you probabaly weren’t the only one who thought the Warriors had no chance against the Mavricks. :)

by sjboy on Oct 24, 2008 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

the mavs series was completely different....

i think all warrior fans felt like we were going to win that series…we owned the Mavs in the reg season and had Baron playing out of his mind and we all felt like he was about to burst onto a national scene in a huge way because we had been seeing him do it all year without getting any credit.

This team and this year is a completely different animal. Whether you believe not resigning Davis was the right decision or not, we all know that having him THIS year would make us a better team than we are currently and his absence is going to be felt in huge ways. We are a team without an identity. Teams without identities get mopped in the NBA.

by JimBarnett2KevinGarnett on Oct 24, 2008 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Im not disagreeing,

I brought up the Mavs as in when you doubt someone hardcore, you get slapped with reality. I am an optimist obviously, but again I just watched the Blazers last year finish 500 with the most inexperienced team in the NBA. That tells me that good coaching + unpredictability + youth = can get you some wins!

You got a bunch of dogs on the Warriors. No one is soft, they’re all grinders. Thats who need to win when your head is down.
I am not going to say were better without Baron, but were better without Baron long term. That guy is like a chick you meet at the bar. Good for that 1 night, but 2 days later you figure out she had herpies. YIKES.
