Jackson deserves to get paid … but the Warriors will need to explain it if they do
It’s no secret that Stephen Jackson, the Warrior with the greatest responsibilities on the court but only the fifth-largest paycheck, is seeking an extension to his current deal. Acting as his own agent, Jackson has been in negotiations directly with team president Robert Rowell on a pact that could keep him in Oakland until age 35. Since Jackson is already under contract for two more seasons, at a total of $14.8 million, the most he can hope to get tacked on is three seasons worth $27.8 million.
Talks have been steadily progressing, and though this is just as an educated guess, I’d say it’s a better than 50-50 proposition that something gets done before the Warriors’ season opens Wednesday.

i posted somewhere about the player/financial break up of a championship contending team.
The last ten championship teams had one of the following: Shaq (4), Duncan (4), Wallace-duo, KG
Biedrins is very good, and we are very lucky to have him. He’ll probably be a 12+/12+ guy for us and I can’t see us trading him away, unless we get Duncan or Shaq at the age of 27. =P
Alsowe obviously want to keep Monta, he’s going to be an all-star, unfortunately not until atleast next year though because of his injury.
We just signed Maggette and probably wont be trading him away.
so that’s 3 contracts for the next 4-5 years at about 10+/- mil a year. financially we can only afford about 17-20 million for the SG and PF starting positions total. We need to invest the bulk of that into our PF. something like 15 mil into or PF and 5 for a guard, preferably a good defender with a jump shot (Which is why I wish Pietrus could have worked out for us). Maybe Bukie? And of course, give harrington the boot.
Jackson is good, but we’ve spent too much money on our other players. I think we should trade him and harrington. maybe a mutli-team deal giving us an great PF or a solid perimeter defender and picks?
Geoff, you're awesome.
Thanks for all the info. It sure helps to have another insider and someone who is really in the know on this site alongside Pree.
The thing about it is that it is unnecessary
1. He has a couple more seasons left on his contract
2. No other team would give him that money, especially not when he’s a couple years older.
2b. How many coaches is he going to respect and listen to? That whittles your list of potential suitors down even further. I’m sure 80% of the coaches would be afraid to have him on his team.
So the Warriors are jumping the gun to have the exclusive bidding rights to pay a player what no other team would even when he becomes a free agent. I just don’t get it. It’s not like he was going to pout about not getting an extension with two years left on his contract, it wouldn’t help his chances of getting a better deal somewhere else in the future.
I understand that they need to do it now because they’ve had the talks, but they should not have entertained this in the first place.
Reduce your carbon footprint, commit suicide.
