Sources: Nelson, Warriors discussing possible contract extension

Well, it looks like the Don will be back for a while.

Golden State Warriors coach Don Nelson has quietly inched toward a contract extension with the club after some serious negotiations in recent days, ESPN.com has learned.

Star-divide

I believe this a good move depending on what Nelson is trying to do. Hopefully Don Nelson will teach the younger players a thing or two and help to develop the "projects" a bit faster. Basically, I want the next one or two years (depending on how the young'uns play) to be focused on developing the younger players and motivating them to do their best every night. I'm not saying that the starting lineup should be Williams, Bellinelli, AR, Wright, and Biedrins, but that he shouldn't do what he did last season and leave them to sit on the bench for every game. Give them some time to play.

Also, this most likely means that an extension for Jackson is close too. Here's another quote for the article:

Warriors swingman Stephen Jackson, sources said, is also likely to receive a contract extension in the same time frame, as Jackson has repeatedly indicated in interviews this month with various reporters.

The Warriors have publicly acknowledged this month's talks with Jackson but declined comment Friday when asked about a possible extension for Nelson.

Best news of the offseason

As long as Nelson is here and has the support of the front office, the Warriors will be 1. Entertaining and 2. Competitive.

That’s all I ask for from ownership, keep Nelson and I’ll stick around as a fan.

Reduce your carbon footprint, commit suicide.

Who wins in a knife fight?

Nellie or Ditka?

The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

One year after this

a one year extension is in both the club’s interest and Nelsons, but not longer, and Jackson’s extension (as much as we love how he resurrected his reputation) is not -

if as suspected Mullin leaves in the spring Nelson becomes the defacto Coach/GM perhaps grooming Smart to ascend to head coach once the hallowed all time wins record falls to Don sometime next year; if Mullin were also to get extended then there would be some stability beyond next year – but those of us dissatisfied with Mullin would wonder how he would do if Nelson were to retire and Mullin was left to his own to handle player/personnel matters (with Rowell’s support of course!)

it indicates to me that any youth movement will be tempered with an urgent effort to win, or maybe visa versa, but in any case we are still stuck at the fork in the road

While Jackson’s extension keeps him happy during the remainder of the Nelson II era, it will leave Smart with a couple expensive, aging veterans at the SG/SF who will have to be major minutes players – not a great recipe for a running team and not easy to unload via trade. Rowell botched the Davis situation (3y @39m was reasonable for your franchise PG who fit well alongside Ellis and Jackson), and is now botching the Jackson negotiations (by extending him well past his prime) such that whatever cap flexibility might have been realized by not re-signing Davis is locked into Maggette and Jackson.

Simply put, I’d’ve preferred to let Baron re-sign and play those years with Jackson & Ellis, as both vets contracts ended, all the while priming KAz and Randolph for the 2/3 spots in the future. Wing players are the easiest to find in the NBA, and should be our least expensive contracts unless a top-ten talent, yet we are now facing just the opposite. Thanks Rowell.

+1

well put. I love Nellie and Jack, but if you asked me would I sign one of them long term right now, I’d have to say no.

cuz he's older than some of his player's grandfathers?

seriously, Nelson’s gonna be pushing 70 by the end of his term and it’s not like coaching an NBA job is as easy on old timers as being POTUS might be if you had a VPILF sidling up to you on a daily basis keeping you feelin young’n spry til the end of the term …

and, upon further review

those of us (myself the largest culprit?) who have been lambasting Mullin for the past few years should stop and at least pause long enough to consider if Rowell has been making decisions or been more involved than any of us previously had reason to suspect? Not extending Baron, trading JRich, etc – working backward how much was Mullin really in charge anyway? Frustrating not knowing who to blame!
