Nellie near new deal: 2 years, $12 million total

By Geoff Lepper

OAKLAND — The Warriors might not want Chris Mullin as their executive vice president past this season, but they’re all for keeping Don Nelson around.

Nelson confirmed Saturday that he and the team are close to a two-year extension that would keep him on the Warriors’ bench through the 2010-11 season.

A source close to the team said the sides are talking about a total of approximately $12 million in compensation; Nelson said his annual salary would drop slightly from its current $5.1 million, but that he would get “a little raise” when deferred monies, set to kick in after 2011, are factored in.

Gotta love Nellie's zingers

"I just don’t think that retirement is all it’s caught up to be," said Nelson, who has taken stock of his life after the recent death of a few close friends. "My philosophy’s changed. Now I better bop ‘til I drop."

love it

keep nellie around throwin kegs on new years for his team until hes 90, hes a great coach and knows how to get the best out of his team. It’s also gonna be fun to watch him teach all the young players we have

I like it

2 years is a nice extension. Not too long where you could see things getting ugly, but nice enough to build the young guys up this season, and go all out next season.

I'm mixed

Nellie is GREAT! But I wonder if this is going to be the Dallas Mavs all over again, with Nellie burning out if the team doesn’t live up to expectations. Will Nellie become GM if Mullins is pushed out?

??

yea but we dont have cuban as a owner/.

by saintdee on Oct 25, 2008 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

he said that there's no way that he's interested in that

“It won’t happen. It didn’t happen. Not interested,” Nelson said. "I’ve got my hands full, period. So I hope that puts out all the fires of whatever it is you’re burning over there. "

by Run Dubz on Oct 26, 2008 1:43 AM PDT up reply actions

well, honestly what do you expect him to say?

what else can he say? if he says anything else he’s being disloyal to Mully but once the GM role is empty he may be singing a different tune … it’s not like Nelson never goes against something he once said …

Nellie would be a good GM

He got Chris Webber for us back in ’94.

Hmmm

I, too, am mixed. I don’t think will ever win with run-n-gun or no defense at all.

Stability is needed

We need some stability with our unstable roster (damn moped).

I think it is good for the team also

Nellie might be interested in developing the young players rather than running the old guys into the ground. Not that there are many old guys left. This team has an awful lot of talent, just not sure it is a complementary talent, a lot of same position players, who gets the minutes, who sits.

finally

woohoo

here is no other better person around who could help raise young talents better then Nellie

i mean, i'm happy but not ecstatic

it’s always good to have a coach not in the last year of his contract, especially the potentially moody don nelson. i wonder if this means that people are starting to officially consider this a short “rebuilding” year, with the better ones after this one. also, it doesn’t seem like mullin had much to do with this. for better or for worse, it looks like his days will be numbered very soon…

I'm happy but...

at the same time wouldn’t be upset if Keith Smart just took over, or someone else. i wouldn’t be like oh no no more nellie.

I'd rather have

My money on the court instead of on the sideline, a young coach and experienced players instead of than a bunch of rookies and an old coach.
What recently retired players are interested in coaching? Maybe Sam Cassels or someone like that would be a good way to go? I kinda liked Musselman too, what’s he up to these days?

scottie pippen

was being talked about by a few teams. he’d be interesting for whoever signs him up. i don’t know if i like giving a guy his first coaching gig as an nba head coach, but it can work.

Don't get me wrong...

It’s not exactly that I’m trying to hate on the guy since I know Nellie can win a lot of games in a season and everything. Let’s be honest with ourselves, though. Don Nelson hasn’t won a single championship in his entire coaching career. In fact, he hasn’t even been to the Finals with any of his teams. I’m just not sure if we need to keep throwing money at him expecting him to turn us into the ‘05-’06 Mavs (besides, we know what’s happened to them over the past few years). Maybe we should start thinking of finding a more defensive-minded coach, since we know we’ve pretty much got the offense thing down.

baby steps people...

i cant believe some of you people arent happy about bringing nellie on board for a few more years. after all the crap that this franchise has been through the past year, id say this is probably the best move they have made thus far.

yes, i understand that nellie isnt a championship team coach, but i also understand that the warriors arent a championship team yet either. if nellie can teach this team how to win on their own, then down the road a new coach can come and take them all the way.

We’re just trying to get a winning record here guys.

I’m not saying we should settle for wins and not a championship, but, baby steps, please.

Just hope he

can handle building a new young team. He gets frustrated and starts playing vets for 40 mins, we’re doomed, and he will jump ship, he has done it before.

by sjboy on Oct 27, 2008 2:44 PM PDT reply actions

lame

nellie is, what, 10% likely to actually live up to his end of the deal? he’s 69 years old. this is a young team, he’s the best we could find? don nelson is what he is: a gimmick coach.

"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."
