Showdown on the 29th. Only 4 days away (and counting)!!!!
Opening night is our time to shine. Our time to let the players, the coaches, the league, and most of all the organization know who we support. Whose campaign do we work for?
It's apparent that there is a battle in Oakland. Rowell vs. Mullin!!!!
Right now Rowell is winning. The owner is on his side, the organization appears to be on his side, we even have people signing Rowell contracts (Nellie, soon to be Jack). Now we all know Nellie loves Mully, and I'm hoping Jack feels the same. But there is an apparent rift and there is some serious pull RR's way. He controlled the botched Davis deal, and is bitter about not getting credit for the Indy trade and all the success that followed. If you want to read all the ends and outs and politics of it all here is Kawakami's great blog on it. There is also a pro RR article attached
There is a great part where T.K. talks about how all great NBA franchises are run by basketball guys not money guys. He uses LAL new and old, BOS new and old, and SA with Popovich to make his point. He even leaves out Det under Dumars. But he nails it! All great teams are run by B-Ball guys.
It's pretty obvious who I am in favor of. So let's hear you guys throw in your 2 cents. Who do like? I'm guessing everyone wants to see Mully return but you never know.
We should use opening night as a forum to let our voices be heard. Bring banners and voices. Mully 2008-09 and Beyond!!!!
Warriors, the Bay, and GSOM until I die!!!!!
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

guessing everyone wants to see Mully return but you never know ...
wellllll, not exactly
Whether he was acting solo or not, Mullin was part of several decisions that set the organization back and is far from beyond criticism. While it’s pretty well agreed that hiring Monty and not resigning Baron were two moves Mullin was not singularly responsible for, he did seem to have a determining hand on the plethora of bad contracts and mistaken judgments on personnel – Foyle, Dun, Murph, Fish, et al. and his drafts are not without err – Bellinelli the most recent example but also POB, etc.
TK has a valid point, need a BB mind making BB decisions, but it has to be the right one, or at least a good one more often than not. We could do worse than Mully, but lots better too.
and then there's Nelson
If it is Mully’s last year, remember that most of the GOOD decisions he has made was after the the Don Nelson hiring. If Nelson steps in and is the GM after Mully leaves that might not be such a bad thing.

is a “basketball guy” and that’s not working out so well for the wolves. being a basketball guy should be more about knowledge of the game than just being around it for a while, be it as a player or a coach. i know you don’t want someone who sees cutting cost as his goal, but i think that there are a lot of guys who played or coached who have no business running a team. the examples given won titles, not because danny ainge was a good player, but because their organizations saw winning as the best bottom line.
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
team mullin
right here. Its easier to support a basketball guy, a warrior legend nonetheless, regardless of his bonehead decisions in the past, than some dude in a suit which Im pretty sure I can take in a game of HORSE.
What is the one constant in the now 15 years and counting of misery ???
TEAM COHAN/ROWELL. We’ve tried everything, replaced everyone, even brought back some of them. How about firing rowell, and convincing Cohan to sell his club. Maybe this time this would work. Its worth a try isnt it?

I hope they keep Mullin, not so much for his performance — he’s been a mixed bag, though much better lately — as for image purposes.
We’re a fringe franchise. As nice as the Bay Area is, as big a market as it is, it’s simply not much of a draw for free agents. When you’re a team like that (as most teams are), you need to put forward a good image, so guys will think, “Well, it’s not LA/New York/Miami, but it seems like a good situation over there.”
To put it mildly, it has often not been a good situation in Oakland over the last fifteen years. The franchise was a joke for a long, long time, characterized by incompetent ownership and constant re-shuffling of the GM and coach positions.
Lately, things have changed. We’ve had two straight winning seasons, and almost as importantly, there’s a good story to this team. You’ve got a legendary coach coming back, working under a GM who used to play for him, as a legend in his own right. You’ve got Stephen Jackson rehabilitating himself, Baron getting his groove back, and We Believe. Lots of good vibes in these last couple years.
This offseason was a bit of a crossroads. Lots of good (good re-signings of Monta, Biedrins and ’Buike, underrated signings of Maggette and Turiaf), but some high-profile bad (the loss of Baron, Mopedgate). The team probably took a temporary step back this summer, and we very well might miss the playoffs this year.
If we do, the reputation of the team could go one of two ways. It could be “young, talented team just taking a year to put it together”, or it could be “same old dysfunctional Warriors”. If Cohan and Rowell axe Mullin, a local legend, it’s much more likely that people will go with the latter story, and the franchise will start to look like a loser again.
Image isn’t everything, but it matters. It matters to free agents, it matters to fans… hell, it matters to me. I’m also a Giants and Niners fan, so I’m doing enough rooting for losers — I want there to be a feeling of excitement about the Warriors. Chris Mullin and Don Nelson running the show helps create that feeling of excitement. Another reset will just get the fan base worried and grumbling again.
So yeah, I hope they keep Mullin around. He’s been a decent GM the last couple years, to the point where they’re not likely to find someone who’s clearly better. If we could land Jerry West, sure. If it’s going to be a more or less lateral move, what’s the point? Keep the good story, if all else is equal.
can someone first layout,
in a pretty organized unbiased fashion, what exactly each candidate has done? and what there policies are. What moves were Rowel’s decisions and what were mullin’s?
Would we even be having this discussion if Elton Brand had accepted the Warriors offer? My guess is no. Everyone would be singing the praises of Mullin and how he screwed the Clippers and Baron Davis by basically swapping an aging Davis for a 20/10 player in Brand. But since Brand decided to take less money to go to Philly, there are a good number of people out there that think Mullin should be fired or not have his contract extended.
Thats not just it,...
He gave BIces R Us (Maggette) 50 million when everyone else was offering 6 million per.
He gave DUnleavy, Fisher, Foyle, Murphy BLOATED contracts. He gave Monta a 66 million contract and couldnt control him, and he is already hurt.
He was a rookie at this, and apparently needed a bit more time. What I just listed was about 100+ million dollars of screw ups. Just think about what you and I do on a daily basis, and if we screwed up this much.
If Mullin loved? of course. Have we improved alot under his tenure? not so much. IN fact we’ve gotten LUCKY AS HELL that other teams ( thanks INdiana! ) have taken our contract. Adonal still counted against our cap.
So with that said, its clear that management is not impressed, and I cant actually blame him. THey drafted B Wright for 5 million per, and didnt play him after a playoff season. LOTS of inconsistencies.
