Jax at the point

I know this is an idea a few people have thrown around here, since he can descently handle the ball and descently distribute, but I just heard an audio clip on Fitz and Brooks where Nelly says its "a pretty creative idea"  and "I'm sure gonna try it".   I haven't really decided how I feel about it, mainly because everything Nelly says is worth about as much as Bank of America stock, but I guess as a quick fix until Monta comes back, it might work.  Maybe it could open up some space to put Buike and Maggette on the floor at the same time as SF or SG interchangeably, or even Randolph at SF and Maggette or Buike at SG.  Or maybe this is showing us how little confidence Nelly has in CJ and Marcus.  I dont know, my main reason for posting this is just to get it out there for discussion, so have at it...

great idea

I think it’s a great idea if jack can take care of the ball. Think of all the offensive firepower we would have if buike or randolph started! Buike can start on a lot of teams in the NBA, and it would make us somewhat bigger than normal which is good. My only concern would be defensively, I know jack is a good perimeter defender but would he be guarding the other teams point guard? for example game 1 of the season against chris paul? Or would we be running a lot of the 3-2 zone that we play? either way if marcus and CJ are’nt producing then this would be fun!

yeah, he could

and he could also start on the magic, cavs, and nets. he’s better than kyle korver/ronnie brewer, better than the trainwreck at the 2 in nola, better than wally world, better than whoever the hell’s playing sg for the magic (is it pietrus? no reason it couldn’t be), and better than bobby simmons. i assume there are a couple more teams that he could start for too, but that’s not to assume he’d be a good starter. he’d certainly be a low end nba starter, and probably isn’t a top 30 sg, but there are definitely teams with a void there.

He tried this some after Jax first arrived when Baron was out and Sarunas was either also hurt or just sucked too much to even try. I don’t remember his ball handling being a problem, but he wasn’t really much in getting the offense going.

oh hella naw

if he the point, it’s going to be turnover party since he isn’t a good ballhandler at all. Action Jackson is a walking turnover waiting to happens. We should let Marcus William do it. He is a pretty good pg when given the minutes.

Stephen Jackson at point.

I think that would be a good strategy for the Warriors, as long as Jackson isn’t playing against someone like Chris Paul.

I would be all for that, I think it might actually LOWER Jackson’s turnovers. When Jackson is a scorer, he tries to do too much with the ball in order to score, and ends up turning it over. When he’s playing as a distributer, he showcases how he was the 2nd best playmaker on the team last season.

I don’t think Nellie would expect Jackson to be the next Steve Nash. The Warriors are a team with a bunch of ballhandlers that can initiate their own offense. It’s not like a Kyle Korver type where a player would need a great pass just to get an open look. All of Jackson’s teammates can get open looks because of their ballhandling, and Jackson already proved how good he is on the pick and roll with Biedrins.

And it’s not like we would always rely on Jack to run the offense all the time. Nellie’s system doesn’t require the point guard to run the fastbreak. Even when we had Baron, we would see guys like Harrington, Monta, J-Rich, Barnes, Dunleavy, Biedrins etc. bringing the ball up to start the break.

Playing Jackson at point guard sounds like a CRAZY idea, but if the Warriors tried it it could turn out to be very effective. It would only work against certain teams, though. Like when we would start Harrington over Biedrins in order to hold Yao under 16 points. It worked great up until the Rockets finally got good big men alongside Yao to distract the Warriors.

Phil Jackson is also planning on starting Lamar Odom at point guard during the preseason.

Jax at PG - why the surprise?

where have you guys been? Been there, done that. On several occasions last season Jax initiated the offense. Granted, it wasn’t anything near full time, and I doubt it will be FT this season either – more like spot duty as change of pace, end of 4th quarter 1/2 court situations, etc. Just another tool available to Nelson.

Don’t forget, there’s time yet to pick up yet another PG if Nelson doesn’t like the options available …

and there was a lot of talk about he and monta splitting duties this year too

it’s not because he’d be the main point guard, but instead that he could take some ball handling pressure and offense initiating weight off monta’s shoulders. while monta adjusts to running an offense as opposed to just taking the rock and scoring, it’ll be very useful to have someone who can get the ball to him and start the offense in other ways.

i’m not sure if it’s as useful with marcus and cj, who are closer to pass first guys (closer doesn’t mean that they are straight up pass first points), and who won’t be a go to scoring option on the team. they’ll have to learn to give up the ball, or they’ll be on the bench in a hurry. either way, it could help jack learn the point, so it’s worth a go during the preseason.

probably not

nellie wants to run and jax will slow the tempo down at the point. why dont we invest in a legit point? monta is gonna be like allen iverson, a mindless scoring machine that needs someone to pass to him.
