Report: Harrington out 2 weeks with bad back

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3695013

Does this seem like a legitimate injury to you guys? It's obvious to everyone that Harrington wants out, and I'm wondering what will transpire over the next couple weeks. It's a little frustrating, because we could really use someone in Al's spot to come in and contribute. I think at this point, the Warriors should be open to all offers, and be aggressive on the phones. I'm a little worried though that this "injury" will turn people off from trading for him immediately. What do you guys think?

the phantom shaq injury… shaq wants to leave miami so he sits out with “injury” goes to phx to miraculously “heals”

but harrington is no superstar championship big man..

According to the Yahoo report

He is sitting out on games until he gets traded but who’s going to go for him? I think we should play him but limit his minutes for our youngsters until near the trade deadline where someone would bite.

I will always be your fan JRich. Good Luck

I think he’s really hurt. Assuming he really wants to be traded he’d be out on the court trying to showcase his stuff if at all possible. Maybe Nellie thinks some rest will get Al back to tradeable form? or at least to playable form so we don’t hafta suffer thru watching more Sacto games.

as much as it pains me to suggest it

this smells more like Nelson’s doing than Harrington’s – Harrington would want to show he’s fine to prove to potential suitors he’s able, though I’m sure the league-wide nod&wink is well understood between GMs.

But Nelson’s the one who all but dictated the change had begun from Harrington to the young guns prior to the announcement of any injury, and if he’s as stubborn an old coot as half this board seems to think he is then he might very well have told Harrington to take a siesta to keep him out of the way …

this was the LAST thing this team needed now, Nelson should have managed this better imo. But now that it’s done we gotta hope the club does NOT take back a big or long contract that eats cap beyond the end of the season – that would be worse than paying Harrington out now …

Don’t you think that Al would speak up in the press if Nellie was pretending he’s hurt? Al don’t seem shy about his thoughts.

fair question

it seems like there is a tacit agreement for him to hold his tongue while the team tries to trade him

fwiw, I don’t trust what Al says as he flip-flopped right away on what he wanted and how he saw his role on the team yet it’s not like we can trust everything Nelson says (at least Mullin’s silent – nothing to distrust)

and, I am not objective on this one – having predicted Al was the one who could step up and make a big contribution I’m now trying to find something to wipe all the egg off my (red) face

No, I think your assessment that Al was the one who could be the key to this season was correct and now the season don’t look too promising. Oh well, gotta stay positive, the lower we get the better the draft position.

Al flip-flopping...

From what I understand Al asked for a trade quite a while ago and managed to keep it quiet until it was accidentally leaked. I don’t think he had any intention of making it public and you could see from his initial reaction that he was hoping to squash the story. You could very well be right about Nellie being the one behind this “back injury” but it’s pretty hard to get a good read on the situation at this point. One thing is for sure, Mullin is out of the loop entirely and at this point pretty much waiting for his contract to expire or to get “that” phone call.

As much as he got boo'd by the fans in the last game

he played before this back injury. I think that we found his feelings are located in his back and that’s what is hurt. If his back is not really hurt, don’t worry his agent will be sure to let others teams know about that is really the case.

Not all really meant at you mike, just adding my 2 cents

how should nellie have managed it better?

al came out and said he wanted to be traded. while al had been wanting out for more than a year, this was kept in house and at the start of the season nellie made al a deal to play him as much as possible, which was what al wanted.

tho not on the inside of the team

it appears that Nelson has been slamming Al for quite some time – instead of either building Harrington up or maxing out his potential while fitting him into the scheme we are now faced with losing a potentially valuable member of the rotation particularly suited to our style for less than equal value. Managing egos and talent is the biggest job an NBA coach has – and no one’s perfect. But it seems Nelson mismanaged this one to me, as he mismanaged another PF in his first go around with the Dubs. Pissed at Al, pissed at Don, etc. Plenty of blame for all involved …

Don't compare Harrington

to Chris Webber in his early days. Harrington will never be half the player Webber was in his rookie season.

He's closer to young Billy Owens than to young CWebb.

Only he’s not even as good as young Billy Owens. And he’s not even young.

perhaps the distinction is too nuanced or not clearly enough stated – to be clear and simple: the comparison is how Nelson manages the egos and talent both past and present, not the two specific players …

As for Harrington, he was instrumental in carrying this team down that remarkable stretch to the playoffs, and most real fans won’t forget that amid the current time. He was a FA Mullin wanted before going to Indy, and he was the #1 talent we targeted in the trade despite knowing full well his attributes as a player. It’s more than a little disingenuous of the franchise to pull the buyer’s remorse card now.

by hardcore on Nov 11, 2008 7:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope...

Other teams already know what they do and don’t like about Harrington’s game. This is merely a way to ensure he doesn’t really get injured just before being shipped off. Other teams don’t need to see him play anymore and certainly don’t want to risk anything at this point if they were really interested in him.

Got any ideas who might want to trade for Little Al? And what they will offer?

was apparently on the block and is now out 3 months. His tradability is kyboshed now. Its better that Al is out and resting up and staying away from injury(no mopeds)

Very fair deal. Portland gets a vet and we get two young guys to help with rebuilding. If I was Portland I would pull the trigger right away.

ya?!

I REALLY WISH AL WOULD HAVE WORKED OUT

This guy has the versatility a team like ours really needs. Those of you throwing him under the bus are crazy. He is still relatively young. We MUST get value for him if he is being moved and we should wait until we get fair value.

by terryteagle on Nov 11, 2008 10:49 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Just because he has the skills, doesn’t mean he’ll play good if he doesn’t want to be here. I’ve always been a Harrington supporter, always thought that he could contribute greatly on our team, but if he doesn’t want to be here, then get rid of him. If he isn’t playing with passion, we might as well get somebody else that will.

Meh.

I don’t wanna see him thrown under a bus, but I’d gladly trade him for a bag of balls with an expiring contract. We’ve all seen enough him to know his strengths and weaknesses. He’s not getting any better, and he’s not an above-average NBA 3 or 4. Let the Buki/Maggette/Randolph/Wright/Turiaf era begin.

bag o'balls

he’s already an expiring – virtually – cause he can opt out at end of year

we have to be sure we don’t take on a longer, just as expensive contract for a lesser player – which I’d wager is all that we’re being offered … maybe offers will improve toward the trade deadline

by hardcore on Nov 11, 2008 12:11 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You think anyone is gonna pay Harrington remotely close to 11M?

He’s not opting out unless he expects a good contract in return. I say he’d be lucky to get 7M/year for 3 years. He’d already be getting more than half that to stick around another year. Not opting out.

You think he's going to sit for two years?

I hear you on the $motivation, but I think he’s going to want to play at this point in his career – and I do think someone will want him by the trade deadline if not sooner. He knows Nellie is here for the duration of the contract he’s under, that’s why he came out with the trade request after Nelson was extended. In June he can be a FA, so if he doesn’t like the next stop he can choose his own situation – may even be pretty attractive in a thin FA market ( at least I think it will be ).

Most importantly, if we’re going to take our lumps playing Wright, Randolph, and Turiaf at the PF anyway we need to be damn sure we don’t take on a big albatross of a contract just to unload Al.

Depressing to even be addressing this, particularly after that OT win. Niiiiiiice!!!!

by hardcore on Nov 11, 2008 11:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not discounting that teams will be interested

He’s not thaaaatt bad of a contract. If I was Harrington and I didn’t like my situation, I’d be pushing for a trade now too. If Harrington doesn’t get traded and he goes into the offseason as a Warrior, I’d just sit tight and wait to become an expiring contract.

As to the FA market this coming offseason, even if it’s thin, I don’t see lots of people shelling out dough because apparently everybody wants to get in on the following FA market. That should depress the demand side, to equal the depressed supply side. Maybe the Warriors should look into this year’s crop, try to get a steal.

I agree with Nellie

This is ALL about a new contract and better money. With the W’s signing Biedrins, Ellis and eventually Jackson, there won’t be big money for Al. THerefore he wants out to a team that will pay him, not ask for a discount. All about the do-re-mi.

Injury is SO suspicious. Al’s playing and complaining about PT, then Nellie says they’ll play the kids and now he’s seeing back doctors.

It’s like he’s trying to drive down his own value.

I think the Warriors just need a floor leader. Even an old one. I’d take White Chocolate for Al – even Starbury. Need a point guard that won’t faulter in the 4th – and will let Jack be Jack.

by joegiant on Nov 11, 2008 11:10 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

NEVER Starbury. I’d rather just keep Al than take Starbury. He is a cancer where ever he goes and let’s not forget that he is owed quite almost $20mil by the Knicks.

If Al has those back problems, I’ve got the perfect medicine for him. Some smokeable medicine. Muahaha

I finally side with Nelson...

…if he is sitting Harrington. Nelson should make up an phantom injury and keep him out. He is a premadonna and deserves nothing but a bench to sit on. The biggest problem with Harrington is he is just not that good and even the casual fan can see that. He is a big guy who plays small and shoots the ball way too much. He has lost more games for our team than he has won. Screw that guy, I know it is a business but it is also about integrity and what is right and wrong. I would rather see Kurz in the game than Harrington. Take anything for him just to get him out of here!!!
