Warriors on the battlefield need ammo to shoot ... and so does this basketball team! We need Ammo to shoot! Anyways, all puns aside, what is it that can keep this kid from becoming a star. In my mind there are three main things...
1. Can he defend? From what I have seen he doesn't seem to be a defensive liability, not any more than Monta anyway. But then again I don't think I have watched as much of him as some of you so what are your thoughts on that?
2. Can he drive? As anybody who has played basketball surely knows a sharpshooter is not much use unless he combines his shooting with the threat to drive past you if you play him too close on defense. So far he has not proved to me that he has the ability to punish his defender with his drive but once I again I have not watched that much of him so I defer judgment to the rest of you.
3. Can he pass? The Warrior fan in me wants to believe it was because his shooting was so hot, but really one assist in 42 minutes for a guard is quite abysmal. If defenses realize that he doesn't have sufficient court vision, they'll just start swarming him whenever he gets the ball and he won't be able to give it up to the open man in time to punish them.
The kid was undrafted so it reasonable to expect that he is deficient in one if not all of these areas. If he is unable to improve in these aspects of his game it is difficult to expect him to be more than a player off the bench to keep the defense honest when they try to play the zone. If, however, he is able to solidify these facets of his game... I'll let the rest of you guys finish that sentence.
PS Wouldn't it be hilarious to have a picture of this kid with a mean look on his face holding a machine gun with a trail of cartridges and a caption saying "Need Ammo to Shoot"
