Let's call it TALL BALL

TALL BALL - means CaptainJack at PG, Maggette pounding the ball inside, Biedrins getting offensive rebounds and converting on plays planned for No.15. TALL BALL means solid defense, good rebounding and being more selective at the 3-pointer and making more plays inside. Now here's what our Warriors need to do to get much better. Practice more plays at controlling the game during the last four minutes. NELLIE - you need to earn your pay and lessen the one-on-one game. That's a play too easy to call. Be more inventive - use more of your players and pound the ball inside for an easy basket. If our beloved team has the lead, then use more of the clock. NELLIE - Have them practice the free throws. You know this is critical in the last four minutes. (I know you are doing this already - so keep it up). Now that you have Kurz back - use him for that unexpected play at the end of the game (a 3-pointer or easy put back). Or come with a play that has a high percentage of getting at least 2-points. Basically , that's what NBA coaches are paid for - plays at the end of the game. Long term (Bobby, Mully) - Trade Al for a PG in RFelton (+ another Bobcat player - Adam Morrison like some GSOMers have recommended) or SG and All-Star in Mike Miller. If they don't work out, then that will free up cap space for the 2010 season. Get BOSH in 2010. Our Warriors will have not only have the BIg 3 (see Boston) but the Fearsome Four - CaptainJack, Maggete, Bosh and Monta. All established 20-points-per-gamers. I promise to get at least two premium season tickets. Promise.

We can always dream ...

Bosh is like a KG - missing piece after we get Miller for a big championship parade down Oaktown.

Trade Al for a PG in RFelton ... or SG and All-Star in Mike Miller

well then, without Al do we still play TALL BALL with a team full of guards?

by hardcore on Nov 2, 2008 9:39 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

It will not be a team full of guards.

CaptainJack at PG
Kaleena at SG
Maggette at SF
Turiaf at PF
Biedrins at Center

All of them TALL (6’5" and over) and can play BALL. Heh. heh.

perhaps a minority opinion

considering the start Rony thread, but if we have to start Rony we are horribly weakened behind both PF & C positions and in fact will end up in more foul trouble imo

mike miller

i kinda like that idea. he doesnt really fill a need, but he’s probably the best player we could feasibly get in return for Al, and with at this point we should really just be trying to get the best players available. How’s the PG situation in Charlotte looking? Is Felton really expendable? I saw they arent happy with May’s conditioning so they may like Al at PF.

+1

(although, I’d rather get a PG instead)

Me too ..

Rather get a PG also … the best would be RayFelt but … i agree Mike Miller is the best player available soon to trade for ….

Reports from Bobcats

earlier in the pre-season, Larry Brown wanted DJ to be the PG … but now he wants more experience to run the offense … so I think he may keep Felton for a little while longer

Fearsome four - Captain Jack, Maggette, Bosh, and Monta

What’s Biedrins doing during this time?

Points aren't the only things that make players good.

As we have seen with Chris Paul and Jason Kidd.

Miller it is

Mike Miller would be a steal. The guy can be a lights out scorer, and he’s way more useful than Harrington. He and Jack would extend the defense tremendously, and free up the inside for Maggette and Biedrins.

Pull the trigger Mully!

Harrington do the same thing in theory? I like the idea of trading for Miller too, I’m just sayin….

i think most of you forgot about the potential of a one...

Anthony Randolph. talk about a guy who can handle better than he is supposed to at his height. he is still raw as sushi, but there are few things i love more than a dude at center height with the handles of a 3 or 4!!

I've gotta see this dude play...

I wasn’t able to watch the summer leage so I’m goin on hype here but word around town is he’s got skills. I just hope Nellie let’s him show those skills.

ARandolph has great potential ...

But Nellie doesn’t play rookies - especially when there are sophs out there - we’ll have to wait till midway thru the season …. maybe

but word around town is he’s got skills.

Yeah, he was a college sensation, woulda gone #1 but they all felt sorry for the other teams chances if they took Rudolf so he fell down to the first team who din’t scout him.

So your secret endgame tactic is to take some guy off the street and have him jack up a 3? Yeah, great idea...

Not!

I hate Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, and Russel Peters because they make fun of white people like me. They also make fun of other kinds of people, which hurts me deep down because my ancestry is so mixed that I don't know what my official "race" is... so I get offended for all races!

Since u r in Boston ...

Kurz made a couple of 3’s in the endgame vs Bucks. Keep the Warriors spirit alive in Btown. Let’s hope the Dubs will follow the blue print that the Celtics followed. Get a big man (Bosh) and proven sharpshooter (Miller) with a pro like CaptainJack. First Championship since 75. … hey we can all dream.

It's not called TALL BALL. There's more to that.

It’s called “Nellie Ball”. Small ball is just the result of not having that many good big men on the team. A lot of people (especially non Warriors fans) act like Nellie wouldn’t know what to do with a Garnett/Yao type of player.

If Nellie had a bunch of tall players, he’ll play them. He just had a large amount of guards during his past two seasons in Golden State, especially in 2007. His coaching focuses on causing mismatches, which can mean a guy like Jackson can be playing the point guard position to post up a smaller (and slow) point guard like Calderon or Nash. He’ll go with a tall line-up one game, and have a small line up the next; it just depends on which team the Warriors are playing, and what Nellie can do to give his opponents mismatches. If Nellie has the right combination and variety of players on his team, then his offense can do A LOT of damage to any team in the league. But he’s had to mostly go small ball because of the truckload of talented guards and swingmen he’s had in 06-07 and 07-08.

As for now, the Warriors have pretty good size, which we saw in the Toronto game. The Warriors were the 2nd tallest team in the NBA during the offseason, but i’m not sure where we rank since we waived Kosta Perovic.

Yes our best players are now taller ...

With BD gone and Monta injured … the best players Nellie can put out there are taller, stronger, but with less speed. TALL BALL means taking advantage of this anomaly by posting inside like you mentioned … but also keep pounding the ball inside … then getting offensive AND defensive rebounds … less reliance on the 3 pointers (unless they get a proven shooter – i.e. Mike Miller for Al) and delivering tough defense … This is the new formula to win games. More of a new Warrior team chemistry . But the Dubs should improve on their free throws especially in the last four minutes of the game … and most of all, practice controlled basketball in these last four minutes. Do this and they will be an elite and feared club in the West … Other teams won’t know what hit them …
