I Hate ESPN
I for one wish that ESPN would return to it's journalistic roots and stop sensationalizing our leauge. To have the only sports monopoly daily exhaulting the genius of G.M.'s that have no backbone and are selling two years of their franchise down the river for a mere CHANCE at one of the marque free-agents is disturbing at best. Jalen Rose on television quoting "my inside sources tell me Bosh and James will both sign in two years with the Knicks". Propaganda at its best with no journalistic merit. There are far more highlights to be seen every night and instead they are talking about hypothetical situations two-years down the road. I for one do not have League Pass and hell, I might like to see the Hawks v. Bobcats highlights instead of pomp and speculation.
All the talk concerning these last two Knicks trades have not mentioned the positives for the secondary teams involved. These teams are DEVOTED to put out a competitive team THIS year instead of throwing their hats into the LBJ lottery. Seriously ESPN?
I feel bad for the fans of New York because no one knows what can happen in two years to a players health and for Donnie Walsh to have such utter distaste for his fanbase is ridiculous. And why would Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas even want play as mere spare parts? This is not the nature of sport and it gets worse year after year. I'm happy our team has signed the players we have signed because an entertaining team that falls short is always better than an unsure scenario in '10. I miss you Dan and Keith!
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

sometimes i agree with you
I want less “life stories” drama pushed on me, but sometimes rumors can be cool. I think it’s totally uncalled for, for jalen rose to say something like that.

it's called "analysis"
now Rose’s inside sources probably don’t know shit. He’s not a journalist and probably doesn’t know what “inside source” even means.
But regardless, the reason the Knicks are making these trades is to clear up cap space to sign LBJ in 2 years. That’s not a secret. A NY (center of media) team making room to go after LBJ has much wider and longer league ramifications than the W’s getting another guard who can shoot. That really shouldn’t be surprising to hear that.
I would prefer to see more highlights, though, but seeing sports on ESPN is getting to be like seeing music on MTV.

you miss dan and keith?
arent they sorta like the founding fathers for what ESPN has become. Bottom line is we all hate that ESPN puts out 90% garbage, but we still all tune in.

Not at all
They both left just as ESPN was getting bad. I guess Dan Patrick was around for a little bit of this nonsense we have now, but I loved the days of Dan Patrick, Kenny Mayne, Rich Eisen, and Keith Olberman as anchors.
Playoffs!!??

naw, ESPN was getting bad before Patrick left for sure and maybe before Olbermann left too.

Totally agree
When they mentioned the Crawford Trade, they hardly even brought up the Warriors. ZERO analysis of what this will do for the Dubs.
ESPN is dictated by big market teams, and the lowly Warriors are left in the Dust.
Screw That! Thats why I watch the NBA channel after the game instead of Sportscenter. Gives you legit highlights from around the league

Do you remember...
When ESPN started to show a gossip (ET, access hollywood, tmz) type of show but based on athletes? What a joke.

Kind Of...
But as the two main anchors they gave us HIGHLIGHTS, there was no 40 additional anchors, ex-player analysis that changes week-to-week, or stupid internet voting. Do you remember how simple, to-the-point, yet hysterical all at once it used to be?
by SinceRunTMC760 on Nov 22, 2008 1:28 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
ESPN also doesn’t give the Dubs enough credit for the things we do and always very little air time on our highlights and NEVER puts us in the top 10 plays even if we deserve it over other plays.

Ex players have no business broadcasting
I like this posting because I just started thinking about that. I loved Reggie Miller as a player, but then as soon as he became an analyst on TNT, that has changed. All of them just don’t seem like they belong… Mark Jackson, Jalen, Van Gundy (I know he’s a coach, not player)… It just doesn’t seem like it belongs.

I like the inside view that players give. Barnett is good, Reggie too, . Barkley’s not very good, he seems to be thinking of ways to piss people off instead of analyzing the game.

I disagree, I think Barkley is pretty good. Reggie just annoys me.

That’s because you don’t appreciate the finer points of the game. Reggie is like french wine while Barkley is like cheap 40 oz.

Really...
Reggie is an awful marble mouthed waste of air space… Absolutely the worst NBA player/analyst. I’ll take Marc Jackson over him any day, but that’s not saying much. Its too bad ESPN didn’t have the stones put Tom Tolbert in the spotlight like he deserves. I give them credit though for using Steve Young, at least they have one former player who actually has something intelligent and passionate to say.

I don’t think he was a good enough player to deserve it, Reggie however was. it’s rare to get quality experienced insights, so I can put up with a little lack of broadcast skills.

not good enough to deserve it? playing achievements shouldnt affect ability to get a broadcasting job. Tolbert is a far superior analyst in every way…..and if your theory worked in reverse Reggie wouldnt be a good enough broadcaster to deserve a shot to play.

The sport we tune in to watch is basketball not broadcasting.
If you want to see hall of fame braodcasters more power to you but I’d rather listen to hall of fame players and see what makes them tick.

You compared Barkley to a cheap 40 oz. even though he was a better player than Barkley. Youre not making any sense… Would you really rather listen to Bill Walton than Tom Tolbert. Your argument is totally ridiculous.

No, I said I’d rather listen to Reggie than to a broadcaster who never played. I’d rather listen to guys who can give me insight into what it’s like to be on an NBA court. Barkley was a great player but he doesn’t try to give a good overview of games, he seems to like causing controversy more than helping the view understand what they are watching. Reggie seems to be more interested in the games. Tolbert is great but he’s not a top level player so I’m not as interested in what he has to say. MJ would be the one I’d like to see doing the broadcasts.

I would agree with you...
IF any of those guys (Jordan, Reggie, name another hall of famer) ever said anything of consequence… But that’s the point. Tolbert ( like Barkley) isn’t afraid to call it as he see’s it and he doesn’t take himself too seriously. Most other guys great players or not, are totally sanitized and BORING. I dare you, name something, anything that you remember Reggie saying. Its all coachspeak fluff and empty air…
Your argument against Tolbert because he was not top level is as flawed as the argument about great players should make great coaches. To use one of Tolberts arguments: who is a better player Rick Barry or Phil Jackson, who is a better coach Rick Barry or Phil Jackson? who is a better player Magic Johnson or Pat Reilly, who is a better coach, Magic Johnson or Pat Reilly? Who is a better player Reggie Jackson or Joe Torre, who is a better coach, Reggie Jackson or Joe Torre?
So, now I ask you, who is a better player Reggie Miller or Jim Barnett, who is a better analyst Reggie Miller or Jim Barnett? Who is a better player Bill Walton or Tom Tolbert, who is a better analyst, Bill Walton or Tom Tolbert?
Give me someone who has something to say and doesn’t think they should get respect just because they show up.

Well I wouldnt go so far as to say I’d take Marc Jackson over him….the Jackson/Van Gundy team is about as bad as it gets. Tolbert far better than anyone out there right now.

Van Gundy...
I actually really like Van Gundy as an analyst. I hate his coaching style but the guy really understands the game, seems to be well studied on the team he’s covering and says just enough crazy stuff to make him entertaining. I’ve also got a soft spot in my heart for Hubie Brown. Kinda Boring but he knows the game like few others and has such a knack for presenting that knowledge in a concise easy to understand way.

+1
on Hubie Brown. Great description of his skills… “I don’t want you with the ball in your hands at the end of the game, why? because you are not a good free throw shooter.”
And good call on Van Gundy.. He once mentioned how he was Nellie’s asst during his brief stint in NY and said “…Nellie is an innovator and does not think about basketball like most other coaches.” Anyone willing to publicly give Nellie props gets my vote… The closest anyone else in the “club” comes to a compliment is that he’s a mad genious and its total bull.

what? I’ve never heard point out the finer points, just babble about how he used to try to defend Jordan and how great UCLA is. Just because Barkley is blunt doesnt mean he isnt insightful.

are you talking about ex players in basketball or just sports in general?
if you are talking about the latter, i definitely disagree. troy aikman is very good broadcaster for FOX.

news in general has always been negative, now its transitioning into sports news. Besides the fact that some of NBA commentators are horrible, they feed bs to the viewers. Jalen is horrible, reggie sounds retarted, and I love the guest appearances from random guys throughout the season on TNT. Atleast Barkley says it like it is.
