Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Can we really make the Playoffs this year?

I've been thinking about this for awhile now: Can the Warriors, realisticly, make the Playoffs this year? I love the Warriors and I would be stoked if they made the Playoffs this year, but I've been sceptic all year. I thought, "We are too young, too inexperienced, not enough defense, lack of chemisty, ect, ect." Yeah maybe I'm jaded after all that has happened since the "We Believe" season, but I also believe I was being realistic. But now, I think we can do it! We got rid of some major baggage (ei. Harrington) and added a stellar player in Jamal Crawford. No he is not our fanchise savior, but he's damn good. Pair him along side our other awesome guards (Monta, Buike, Morrow, Jackson, and maybe Maggette) and I think this group can bring us at least the 8th seed. Add in the fact the Andris is one of the top centers in the West now, and some quality youth, and I think we have something in Oakland now. In your hearts-of-hearts, what do you think the chances are of the Dubs making it to the Playoffs this year?Truely.

i say probably not

not because we don’t have a pretty good team, it’s just that the west is so loaded

I wish we would just tank...

but we are just good enough to get the 14th pick again….

We are the Warriors

we do not Tank games to get first pick then end up getting the 5th pick. It’s still the lottery, no guarantees we will get pick 1

5th pick might look pretty good ...

— I agree, tanking is pretty unsavory, but if you’re gonna do it might as well do it early enough to make it work

any injury to Andris and the season, well playing for playoffs, is over

no other team is as dependent upon a single player as we are – except maybe Cleveland, and please, don’t jump all over that and misrepresent my argument (you know who you are)

by hardcore on Nov 23, 2008 4:57 PM PST reply actions

you sell Turiaf short.

besides i can’t think of one game that AB, for all his #‘s, has been the primary reason we won. it’s 2 Morrow, 2 Jack, and 1 Wright.

by the evil monkey on Nov 23, 2008 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

not at all, he's a great addition

but he is what he is – an energetic defender and rebounder whose primary role as Andris’ back up suits him well … just like Harrington might have been a great sixth man, if we’d had that luxury, but starting Andris and Turiaf negates the luxury of having him backup Andris

on the flip side, I think you sell Andris short – the double-double man who is also defending the best bigs every night. We could lose Jax, or Morrow, or Wright and still have enough perimeter firepower to at least compete whereas if we lose Andris we may not be able to rebound at either end or defend against even the dregs of the NBA much less battle for the 8th spot regardless of what kind of shape Ellis comes back in …

by hardcore on Nov 23, 2008 5:35 PM PST up reply actions

true...

On a team with so much redundancy AB is totally unique. Without him we are screwed.

Primary reason?

I’m not sure how you determine what the primary reason is but if you remove his 14 Reb a game we would have had a hard time winning any games up to now.

how

we play with crawford will determine our playoff status

JRich 23

by warriorsalltheway on Nov 23, 2008 5:53 PM PST reply actions

it's possible...

depends on how crawford plays and depends on how monta plays when he is back. plus dallas and san antonio haven’t been playing as well this season. new orleans is off to a slower start too. so in other words, crawford and monta will have to play very well and the other teams will have to continue to play not as well.

I’d much rather have us miss the playoffs this year so we can have a longer rest over the summer because our best chance to make a run for a title would be in the next few years. (sounds alot like rebuilding, what us warrior fans are so used to)

Maybe We should be like Villanova

And play a 4 guard lineup and have one big man on the floor . I’m sure that will work against teams with the likes of the lakers . Ya its gonna be a problem when our pf is smaller than teams sg

by montadaboss on Nov 23, 2008 10:31 PM PST up reply actions

yes

i think we can. will we? that is another story. we have seen a pretty good team this year who has made some mistakes, had some injuries, lost some tough games, etc. If monta can come back and be the player we know he can be and if he isn’t slowed down, if this group really gels, we can do it.

by Agent Zero on Nov 23, 2008 11:28 PM PST reply actions

realistically, i hope we dont

even if we get into the playoffs, are we a championish conteder? I’ll never forget to 2007 playoff run, but for me personally, merely getting into the playoffs isnt enough anymore. I’d rather miss, let our injured players get rest, let monta get a full summer of working out his new ankle and rehabbing, and start off a season with a fully healthy monta and a fully health buike and maggette, with randolph and morrow getting a years worth of play time under their belt, and another draft choice., Then I think we can see just what kind of damage the dubs can do

by kyzah on Nov 24, 2008 12:19 AM PST reply actions

yes

we were pretty much at the same record at this point last season. and we pretty much had a full squad. here’s something you might be forgetting: the warriors will get better, and soon. crawford will improve our team. at the very least, he will decrease jax’s turnovers (thankfully). then there is a certain #8 who should be making his comeback within the next month. that will allow role players to do what they do best, and stop trying to force things.

i’m not saying we’re a bona fide playoff team, but YES, we can really make the playoffs this year. the only good news in missing the playoffs is that we keep our first round draft pick this year.

by Run Dubz on Nov 24, 2008 1:16 AM PST reply actions

Crawford + Monta = completely new squad

Once Crawford and Monta are both with us, we will be stacked! Then its run and gun time like last season and ’07. I think we can definitely win 45+ games and make the playoffs.

Think about it: a starting lineup of Monta, Crawford, Jax, Maggette and Biedrins is sick! Once we are to that point, I would say we have one of the best and deepest benches in the league: Buke, Turiaf, Morrow, Wright, Randolph and CJ.

It all depends on how Crawford gels with the team.

by bwiles81 on Nov 24, 2008 11:59 AM PST up reply actions

the last thing we need is another 1st round draft pick...

I saw we go balls to the wall and strive to make the playoffs, and once again, upset the 1st seed in a 7 game series. I dont know about the rest of you guys, but time is precious and i simply dont want to stand by and watch another losing season with no postseason action. Whether we contend for a title or not, the post season is exciting! I don’t want to spend yet another year putting hope into a crap draft pick, saying next year this, next year that.. the Warriors need a fire lit under their asses to win some f-ing games right f-ing now! TIME IS TOO VALUABLE TO WASTE CHEERING FOR NOTHING!

screw cohan, screw mullin, screw baron

by DMJR on Nov 24, 2008 2:48 AM PST reply actions

Upset the 1st seed again

In 2007 we played tje Mavericks, the number 1 seed. We had a 10 game straigh winning streak against them. We had their former head coach as our head coach in Nellie. We had the type of back court players in baron and richardson to create matchup problems against Dirk when he put the ball on the floor. The Mavs had zero precense on the low block, an area of weakness for us. Mentally, the Mavs were a very weak team, as evidenced by them changing their starting 5 in the first game to play our style of ball. We had, and all us warrior fans knew it, a great chance at beating that team in 7 games.

Fast forward to 2008/2009. As things look now, we got the Lakers as the number 1 seed. I guess I could spend the time naming all the weakness’ the Mavs had that the Lakers don’t, but Im sure by this point you understand what I’m trying to say. We will have no advantages against the Lakers. We cannot beat the lakers in 7 games, especially with them having home court. And while I’m sure ill get blasted for not being a “true warriors fan” by saying it, the warriors quite simply, are not ready for that level of competition. Get Monta healthy. Get experience for our core rookies. Trade off dead weight (Williams, Belinelli, etc). The post season isnt exciting when your team gets crushed in the 1st round. I’m sure the Wizards fans arent falling over themselves at getting into the playoffs every year, and get eliminating 3 straight years by the Cavs. GETTING TO THE PLAYOFFS ISNT ENOUGH ANYMORE.

by kyzah on Nov 24, 2008 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

Dubs are different.

With a team like the Wiz, there’s no chance of them beating the Cavs because the Wiz play in the plodding, defense-oriented East Coast style. The Dubs, however, play completely differently, with a wide open run and gun style, so there’s always a chance they can win. That makes it way more exciting.

by bwiles81 on Nov 24, 2008 12:01 PM PST up reply actions

how does that disprove my point

Last i checked, the last team to win a title with a run and gun style was the showtime lakers. Every team in the last decade has been defense oriented squads. Even the Lakers today put considerable emphais on defense. So how does our style make us more likely to win over the wizards?

by kyzah on Nov 24, 2008 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

did you

just call the wizards plodding and defense oriented? that is completely false.

Still too early...

Once Crawford is integrated in the System, Monta is back, and we make that last trade ( one of our guards for sure IMO), we will truly know where we stand as a team. But right now I see no consistency, and if our team was set as of today, no way in hell would we make the playoffs.

by Pearlsofwisdom on Nov 24, 2008 11:50 AM PST reply actions

depends on the new chemistry.

I really like watching this team. They have so many people that have a huge upside, with lots of room for improvement. They play hard most of the time. There is no way of knowing the answer to the question until we have seen Crawford playing with the other guys for 10+ games, and after Monte comes back and joins the mix.

Our Veterans are already proven, and playing close to their potential:
We only have 3 veterans! These guys gotta lead the way.
Jackson: Gotta love the heart, the emotion, if he can reduce turnovers, take a few less shots early, just a little refinement in his game, probably accept a slightly lesser role when both Crawford and Ellis are on the team.
Magette: Really solid player, keep him involved. Keep slashing and driving.
Crawford: We’ll see. Potentially he could be the replacement of Baron that has been our biggest need.

Our young veterans still have room for significant improvement: These 4 still can raise their game another level, and if they perform this year, next year they will be solid veterans.
Ellis: Still hasn’t played point guard very well, but if he’s healthy, we have one of the quickest guards in the league and our fast break will be the best in the league. I think he has to alternate between being a driver, distributer, and scorer. I think he’s good at playing passing lanes on defense.
Biedrins: I like his effort and improvement this year, I still wish he had a jump shot.
Azubuike: Still improving and refining his game. I think he’s getting better.
Turiaf: I like his hustle, but I’d like him to take advantage of his bulk and pound it inside, too many jump shots.

Our unproven youngsters have so much potential
Randolph—He has to play and learn this season…too good
Wright—solid, but needs a jump shot and 20 pounds
Morrow— We could see more Reggie Miller type days from him in the future. In an ideal scenario, Jackson puts more energy into seeing him achieve his potential.
Belinelli— Working hard enough at both ends so that I would like to see him get a chance to be a spark off the bench.

I don’t think these 3 will have an important part of the future warriors
CJ Watson—has the heart, but hasn’t quite arrived yet. Will disappear after the other 2 guards arrive.
Williams—doesn’t fit in.. should be cut, or get whatever we can scrounge for him
Kurz—one fluky preseason game ending, could be brought in occasionally with all the shooters when a 3 point shot is needed.

If we can stay anywhere close to .500 through midseason, then, if the guys gell with Crawford and Monte, I think we could see some really surprisingly good basketball in the 2nd half. I hope we’re done making trades. I like this team right now, at least I want to see what they can do for a season. The playoffs would be an unbelievable bonus.

by mayelamingi on Nov 24, 2008 11:56 AM PST reply actions

I agree with all but...

CJ Watson is crucial when Jamal needs to rest. Although not quite the playmaker I anticipated, he has shown some promise in slashing to the hole but finishing is his problem. He has good range in the perimeter.

Hey pinoy..

a little bit of patience here and there perhaps the Dubs might get in. ’musta na?

by kyliekotmo on Nov 25, 2008 8:27 AM PST up reply actions

We might....if

We just might if we can find a true point guard. I hope Crawford turns out to be a PG rather than a SG. When Monta returns, I don’t think he will be near full capacity so he might struggle a bit to find his rhythm. If the two kids develop (BWright and Randolph) and Morrow turns out to be the real deal, hell yeah we’ll make it as the fifth seed!

by kyliekotmo on Nov 25, 2008 8:21 AM PST reply actions

i would be more confident

if it weren’t for the billups trade. before that, denver looked like the sort of team destined for an implosion. he was a huge pick up for them. that team is loaded with scorers and needed someone to get them the ball, now they’ve got one. the lack of defense will probably keep them from getting far, but they’ll get into the playoffs.

adding crawford was big for us, but enough to push us into the playoffs? i am not so sure. with san antonio getting manu back already, it’s safe to say that they’ll get in. there was never much doubt about the lakers, rockets, hornets, and jazz. i already said i think denver is in. that’s six.

i’d say the blazers have the inside track on the 7 seed. they sort of fit there perfectly. a young, talented team that has shown that they can win games in the regular season, but are still too shaky to see getting a high seed. now there’s one spot left.

the suns are playing well, but are really counting on guys who are injury risks. the mavs have made a surge recently, but are no guarantee either. if we are going to get in, we’ll need to pass both of them, or hope that portland falls apart. it’s doable, but it’s anything but easy.

heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
