Game 1: Warriors @ Wizards - A New Hope
Golden State Warriors at Washington Wizards, Nov 25, 2008 4:00 PM PST
Update [FJ]: Boxscore
Please be our Luke Skywalker for the year!
Warriors: 5-8
Wizards: 1-10
Tip-Off: 4:00pm PST
Radio: KNBR 1050
TV: CSN Bay Area
Oh man, oh man, oh man. I'm so excited I'm going to pee my pants. Seriously, someone get me a diaper. Or at least go find me Mike Dunleavy...
Our newest acquisition, Jamal Crawford, will get his first opportunity to drop 20 points for Dubs and bring some new life to the Warriors. Sure sure, I'm excited, but what does Jamal think about the whole trade?
It feels so good. It feels so good. Honestly, I think this system fits me better than any system in the league. Coming here with coach Nelson, a Hall of Fame coach … it’s re-energizing. I’m excited.
I'm excited too JC. I'm excited too.
What better way to bring in our newest player than by playing the worst team in the NBA? First they throw out a max contract for Gilbert (which we did too) and...he can't play til January. Then they lost another starter, Brenden Haywood. AND THEN they lost to an undermanned Knicks team, who only had 7 active players. Well, that sucks.
And the cherry on top - they fired their head coach, Eddie Jordan, while he was handing out turkeys for a charity event. Talk about unclassy...
Well, that's obviously horrible karma, sooo...easy win?
R Dizzle's Predictions
- Warriors win by 20
- JC busts on to the scene with 15 points and 10 assists
- Andris gets another double-double...yaaawwwwnnnn
- Agent Zero...looks fly in his suit.
- Antawn Jamison destroys us on the boards.
- Mickael Pietrus scores 30...oh wait, my bad scratch that one. (just for you goldenstatelove)
GO DUBS!

Judging by Crawford's career to date...
…I’ll settle for Admiral Ackbar.

Ackbar does have great court vision
….but the admiral doesn’t have great ball handling skills, also he’s injury prone.

YES!!!!!!!
Hopefully this means NO MORE BALLHOGGING FOR STEPHEN JACKSON! Seriously, once Monta comes back to join the team, we won’t have to worry about Jack trying to do too much with the ball in his hands in order to score; he’ll have pressure taken off of him from all the other scorers on the team.
Is Crawford playing PG? I hope so, it’s really ugly seeing CJ an Jack running the point. 6 is an ugly number but whatever.
by Five Ten Entertainment on Nov 25, 2008 10:53 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
I’m looking forward to seeing Crawford play as well, but I forgot to set the DVR before leaving for work…dang!
I’m liking this trade more and more. This is the closest thing we have to a scoring PG and think he’ll stay there after Monta comes back. (I was never convinced that Ellis could run the offense and didn’t see it as the best use of his skills. Nelson will have a lot more lineup flexibility. My guess is that the rotation will look something like this:
PG – Crawford (Ellis)
SG – Ellis (Morrow/Akubuike))
SF – Jackson (Azubuike/Morrow))
PF – Maggette (Wright/Randolph)
C – Biedrins (Turiaf)
Nice article in todayt’s SF Chron about how Crawford is looking forward to playing PG again. Sounds like he’s enthused about creating scoring opportunities for his new teammates: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/11/24/SP0114B751.DTL
In fact, Crawford insisted that his main focus is on distributing. He wants to take pressure off Stephen Jackson and make sure teammates find – and keep – their grooves.

Thank GOD!
This means that Morrow can finally get some shots now that we don’t have Jackson ballhogging and passing up on passing to Morrow when he’s open!

Help us Obi Jamal Crawford. You're our only hope
at moving the ball, keeping the offense flowing, and letting Jackson play his normal role as a play finisher, instead of a play starter.

I seriously hope this guy does well on the Warriors
Can you imagine, about 3 seasons ago, Stephen Jackson was one of the most villainized players in the NBA; now, he’s a respected captain of the Golden State Warriors and is loved by his community.
Matt Barnes, only hit 19 three pointers in his whole career before joining Golden State, and then ended up making 100+ three pointers (including big shots in the playoffs) in only his FIRST year as a Warrior.
Nellie has that type of impact on some players, hopefully Crawford has some sort of new calling as well.
by Five Ten Entertainment on Nov 25, 2008 12:10 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
True, but he also has a history of turning some players into crybabies. I’m looking at you, Webber and Harrington!

I’m real excited to see how Crawford fits on this team. He is fun to watch.

Anyone else think he can get 10 assists playing with guys he just met? I’m thinking it will take at least a couple of weeks of practice to see what we really have?

I've been lost
Life has been really hectic for me lately. Right now I’m trying to get my IB Diploma at school, run a Thunder blog, run a basketball simulation league, sleep, and somehow fit Warriors games inbetween. I only get to see the ones that are not during Thunder games, because I have season tix. Still, I’m really pumped for the Warrior games in OKC (Especially on New Years Day!).
I’ve really missed you though. I am on AOL Instant Messenger all the time if you wanna say hi….Yahoo won’t work on my computer.
Still, even though both of my teams have been pooping all over the court, I’m having a blast watching them. And….yes, the Warriors are still my #1 team.

Pretty Crappy
Sometimes, he looks really good. He scores a lot of jumpshots off of pick-n’-rolls, hits some open 3s, and has really awesome drives. Other times, he looks like an old Antoine Walker, missing all of his shots and being virtually non existant everywhere else on the stat sheet.
The key for him is consistency, and finding open shots. He’s really bad at creating for himself, and Earl Watson doesn’t do a very good job of creating for him either. He almost never passes it once it’s in his hands.
To be honest, Jeff Green has had a better year, being overall more offensively efficent, getting the rebounds, and dishing it often. He is almost never the best player on the court, but he does what he does consistently, rather than screwing us over with 8-21 shooting when he does badly, like Durant.

It’s getting excited over that pass from Crawford to Wright – when you realize that this team is so fundamentally-lacking that a standard point guard play has become exciting – in spite of a fourteen deficit: at least that assist was nice.
That’s how bad the Warriors are.
Oh and Nelson’s insistence of using Maggette at the four (giving up too much height) and insisting that Maggette shoot long distance shots (not his game) just so he can spread the floor. Nellie’s game plan is so dated. Is spreading the floor really effective when the Warriors can’t get a rebound anywhere?

I can see this team doing things down the road with a new coach who puts some emphasis on defense.
Right now we don’t have the offensive firepower we think we do though. So when we “struggle offensively” and are letting the other team run up and down on us, it’s not an off night, it’s a recurring theme.
Worst mistake by the front office, even worse than extending Jackson, was extending Nelson, no doubt.
And don’t give me any crap about the refs. Happens to everybody, and usually balances itself out.

Best thing about playing the Celtics:
This team doesn’t have to worry about making a scrub a superstar. Everyone on that team is good.
Well, Scalabrine might go for 30/12.

by squadmog on Nov 25, 2008 5:52 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah. But you’re not.
And Nelson will let Jackson get a touch each possession and no one will cycle it to Morrow and when Morrow misses one three and blows a defensive assignment he’ll sit for an entire half.
by so ill so d0pe on Nov 25, 2008 5:54 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
And Nelson will encourage Maggette to “spread the floor” by jacking up threes, but then the Warriors won’t grab a board because no one helps Andris except Kelenna (unless AR is in) thus nullifying the concept of “spreading” the floor.

There’s something wrong with this team, and I’d like to know what it is. Why don’t we have heart? Why don’t we have energy? Why are we playing like a bunch of apathetic players getting paid, instead of playing together to get the win?
by IQofaWarrior on Nov 25, 2008 6:16 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
It’s not heart we’re lacking. It’s skill. You can have all the heart you want, if you suck you aren’t winning.
Besides, I feel like we showed some heart out there, though the score didn’t indicate it. A lot of bad bounces on hustle plays and sloppy turnovers, but turnovers usually mean you are trying too hard rather than not trying hard enough.

the only thing positive out of that game was crawford. nice handles and some great passes. his defense wasn’t that bad either as everyone says. i think playing for the knicks all those years would make u lazy on defense.
most disappointing 2nite has to be our 2 captains. just absolutely pathetic. biedrin’s defense was absolutlely non-existent against blatche. the dude has one move and u can’t even stop it!!!! he either shoots or fakes!!!!! geezus!!!!!! get ur hands in his face and watch the for the fake.
as for jax, any team watching film knows his pick and roll with biedrins. until jax knows how to run that like a tru PG, it is just so hard to watch. u r just sitting expecting for the ball to get thrown away or stolen.

UGH. That was awful.
No sense in making too much of one game — teams have off nights, plus I don’t think the Wizards are quite as bad as 1-10 suggests. But DAMN, was this off.
Pretty much the whole starting lineup was bad. Maggette probably didn’t get a couple calls he could’ve, but two rebounds ain’t gonna cut it at SG, let alone PF. Morrow has turned back into a pumpkin. Biedrins was well below his usual level. Crawford looked okay, but expecting him to be any sort of solve is excessive.
And forget the box score — Jack was absolutely awful. You can credit most of Biedrins’s turnovers to Jack, and I don’t know where those blocks are supposed to have come from, because he was nonexistent defensively. He also had classic bad-Warriors energy, moping after blown assignments and bad calls and glaring at teammates after he screwed up passes to them. The idea that we just extended this guy is really worrying.
Having said all that, Jack wasn’t the villain tonight. The biggest culprit of tonight’s embarrassment was Don Nelson.
Why is Anthony Randolph playing more minutes — and more key minutes — than Brandan Wright? Wright was excellent as usual; Randolph looked like a clown. Why, on a night when friggin’ ANDRAY BLATCHE was slaughtering us, did Turiaf only get ten minutes? Is Nellie really this rigid and foolish?
There is real talent on this team… even tonight, Wright and ‘Buike had good, heartening games. But the talent won’t mean a damn thing if Nellie can’t recognize where it is. If our coach can’t realize that Brandan Wright should come off the bench before Anthony Randolph, it’s gonna be a really dispiriting season.

+100
I don’t understand the logic in Randolph playing “key” minutes ahead of Wright. It just does not make sense to me. We have wayyyyy to many turnovers and no rebounding at all. There are so many flaws to this team and its so frustrating because I feel like they are not being addressed. Nelson needs to do more “coaching” because with a team this young, they need that sort of mentoring. Nelson needs to tell Maggette to stop taking the 3’s and “drive in” he is so much more effective like that. Gah, its just simple things like that. I hate our reckless 3 point shooting where Jack or Maggette justs jack them up for the hell of it. We need more ball movement, and hopefully Crawford can bring some of that to the table…but it has to be the whole team as well.
by gorillas on Nov 25, 2008 6:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
no joke, its like just cause he's (maggs) on the warriors he's uh start jacking up 3's. Dont they get embarrassed missing so many shots.
Nelly needs to pull the reigns and settle down the shot selections. but again, he wont
by THIZZ-A-LOT on Nov 25, 2008 6:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
i agree
the only reasoning i can come up with as to why nelly plays randolph over wright is because, randolph shoots from the outside and can spread the floor? the funny thing is randolphs shot is pretty bad right now, wright could probably shoot atleast as well as randolph from outside but wright is a little more mature and plays within his own game. wright really doesn’t miss much, hes a good defender and a decent rebounder he should be starting at pf, hes a threat on both sides of the floor, maybe he doesn’t do well in practice? well nelly i could give a shit, hes playing well in the games
by montamazing on Nov 25, 2008 6:47 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Right. I guess Nellie’s logic is that the best version of Anthony Randolph is better-suited to his style of coaching than the best version of Brandan Wright. Problem is, Randolph is years away from realizing his potential (if he ever will, which is highly debatable), while Wright is good now.
This is hugely important. We can not piss away Brandan Wright because Nellie doesn’t recognize his gifts. I love Nellie, but Wright is more important to our future than he is.
by onlxn on Nov 25, 2008 6:53 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I never expected Morrow to repeat his opening performance but two things have plagued him and the chief of them being that no one gets him touches. A play will be “good” if Jackson DOESN’T get a touch – but he gets a touch each play and then offense stagnates and then a forced pick and roll is blown.
If there was ball movement akin to even a sub-par NBA team then maybe Morrow would get some touches around the perimeter.
But that won’t happen as long as Jackson is pampered as this team’s go-to guy.
And as long as Maggette thinks he belongs on the perimeter as well.
You are dead right, and more often do fans feel these sentiments about Nellie than the contrary. But after three horrific games Nelson will pull out a logical rotation and everyone will sing his praises, forgetting these mistakes, Nelson will then try to be cutting-edge like he tries to be – which really just borders in senility – with these infamous “mismatches.”
It doesn’t work, Nellie.

I’m not ready to go there yet. Our roster is imbalanced, but it is talented, and guys like Monta and Wright could help solve some of our biggest problems in-house. Nellie just needs to figure out who his best players are.
by onlxn on Nov 25, 2008 7:00 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Dump unnecessary guards (Belinelli and Williams), realize that Morrow and Watson are (or should be or will be) reliable and serviceable third string players and get a decent power forward – but that’s a pipe dream and maybe not even practical. Maggette is not the answer at the four. Turiaf (maybe) and Wright belong at that spot. Morrow, Watson and Azubuike (to the least degree) do not need to crowd the starting line up. Crawford / Jackson / Maggette. It’s that easy until Monta gets back.
That’s the only roster shake up necessary.

Alright I'm going to have to say this
but I think we need to bring up Hendrix from the D-League and get rid of either Williams or Belinelli. I don’t want to judge by one preseason game, because Hendrix didn’t play alot in the preseason. But in 23 minutes the dude had 12 points and 13 Rebounds…half of them being offensive rebounds. I understand its just one game, but we did draft Hendrix for rebounding purposes after all. He’s a rebounder. He averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds in college. He would be much more helpful than Belinelli or Williams at this time, in my opinion.

A three pointer is the last thing you want your big bangers to be thinking about. No thoughts of finesse should ever get near their minds. Their focus should be attack the glass both offensively and defensively.

If the measure of success were to win regular season games, Nelson would be the champion. As recent as last year, he sacrificed any chance we had of going deep in the playoffs by squeezing the life out of our key players early and often in the season to get more regular season victories Hell, we didn’t even end up making the postseason last year.
And now this year, we clearly have no shot at the playoffs, and even if we did, we have no shot at contending. So why must we deny it? Play Brandan Wright more, see what you have in him. Play Belinelli at all, see what you have in him. Jackson without Baron is a role player trying to be a superstar, and in Nelson’s system he has no limits. I’m not gonna lie, there are plenty of people I want to see taking his shots besides him. But in this current system we are accepting his mediocrity because that’s who he is? Eff that, get in his face, and tell him to shoot less. Or sit him. Just stop manipulating our team to squeeze out any victories you can and screwing us in the long run. You have people on the bench that we have no idea if they are good or not. So play them and find out. Don’t just keep them on the bench and assume they are bad, let me see some proof. I’ll refuse to believe Marcus Williams is a bust or a find until he plays, same goes for Belinelli, and Wright.
Why did we extend this coach? Why must we continually lower our ceiling (extend Jackson, extend Nellie, not sign Baron while signing Maggette, trade away a first round pick for a PG we won’t even let play, etc.)
