Thoughts about the Game and the Warriors
I was going to post this as a reply but it kept piling on and thought maybe it deserves to be a fan post. Anyway, some thought about tonight's game and the Warriors as a whole.
1. Jamal Crawford was too passive in this game which is understandable but it'd be interesting to see if he can keep up his pass-first mentality once he gets full acquainted with his new team.
2. Maggette PLEASE STOP SHOOTING 3'S!!!! Statline tonight 6-16 from the field, 1-4 from beyond the arc. Take out his pathetic 3pt attempts and he shot a more respectable 5-12 from the field. Want a bigger sample size? Maggs is shooting 38% from the field this season. Take away his 3pt attempts and he's shooting 47%
3. SJax PLEASE STOP CHUCKING 3'S!!!! Same with Maggette but I would allow him to still shoot it just not at his current rate of 7 attempts per game. Again comparing his shooting percentage.... with his 3pt attempts: 39.5%..... without his 3pt attempts: 46%.
4. Just peeked at the boxscore. Crawford actually managed to take 10 shots.
5. Until Nellie makes some changes, which I highly doubt, Anthony Morrow is such a waste on this team. He's no savior but his jumper is money, if you get him open through off ball picks and/or ball movement he can get you quality shots. Unfortunately those things has been the Warriors achilles heel on offense during Nellie's tenure here.
6. Each passing game where I see a bit of Randolph and Wright here and there I can't help but feel more and more pessimistic about how good/great their career will turn out. Explanation in the next couple of points.
7. Anthony Randolph. Gotta love his swagger but I think that's also the root of his problem, he's got too much. Lemme put it this way, I'm scared he'll turn out like Tim Thomas, Antoine Walker, Ricky Davis, or even our very own SJax. By that I mean, talented players who tends to play more than their skill level. They never met a shot they didn't like and loves the spotlight too much they don't know when to take the backseat. That's how I see Randolph right now, you see flashes of brilliance from a talented players but he's also trying to play above his head.
8. Brandan Wright. On the contrary, BWright is 68 games away from either heading towards Biedrins or POB category. To his credit, he's been pretty aggressive this year but Nellie love players that stands out in one category and Wright is still looking for his identity. Now here's my problem, Nellie is a confidence killer (more on this later) so either he finds something he does extremely good (rebounding/garbage man ala Biedrins) or he's headed back to the doghouse.
9. Nellie is a confidence killer. He's a great basketball mind especially in providing mismatches and exploiting it, BUT when you play a guy 30 minutes one night and bench him next for the whole game you're really gonna have inconsistency problems. And that's my beef with Nellie, as a player you don't have a clear idea of what your role is unless you're in his inner circle.
10. Small Ball. Say it with me...1,2,3.... SUICIDE!!!! That Portland game was a fluke Nellie, Aldridge is a jump shooter not a pound the ball guy that's why it worked and McMillan made the mistake of not playing Pryzbilla more otherwise we would've lost that game.Great a basketball mind Nellie is, he's wrong about playing Maggs at the 4. Small ball works because you force the other team's forward to defend a wing player and force them outside. But here's the problem, Maggs strength is overpowering his guy either at the post or taking him to the basket and using his strength to either finish or get fouled. You lose that when you have a 7 footer guarding him who gonna give him space and can change his shot when he drives to the basket. What happens is he ends up taking outside shots which leads to problems (See #2). And we all know what happens on the defensive end

Great post
Actually turned out to be more of a summary of the season’s progress so far.
I think the most important issue is Nellie’s trust in playing Wright and Randolph
These two are the two players with the most potential and most adept at playing the 4 spot. If Nellie doesn’t play them, then we resort to small ball, creating all the problems with Jackson and Maggette taking 3’s and trying to bring the team back into the game by themselves.
Thank you, Dubs.

Ummm....
Maybe you missed it. See points 6, 7, 8, and 9. This is why Wright and Randolph don’t really work.

The players need to know their roles
Everyone right now is just ballhogging and chucking threes, Maggette needs to focus more on slashing and getting to the line while other people shoot from outside. And yeah, I want Crawford to have the ball in his hands more often. This team isn’t playing with any heart and swagger right now, they fall down so easily and have a hard time fighting back. They’re not attacking much either, they need to run more.

Totally agreed with bullet number 9
but I still like Run n’ Gun if it was under D’antoni. I think he is what made players better on the Suns by instilling confidence in them. Look at what he’s done with the Knicks up until the trade.

As I said in the main game recap...
Randolph is in dire need of a Vet right now (not Stack) to take him under his wing and coach him one on one, hell, even Mully could do this….why?
He has truely phenominal athletic ability, this boy can jump like no other. His enthusiasm right now is getting way ahead of his game and right now it is really going to hurt him.
He had to sit the pine for many games recently following (Timberwolves) game I think, after he made 3 howling defensive errors and we lost 6 points in the space of 1 minute, I thought Nelli was going to rip his head off! he was pissed!
He came back and against the bulls he pulls off two truly amazing blocks in the final moments of the game, which had everyone pumped and the Dubs just 3 points down with 20ish seconds on the clock…what does he do…that Jackass dunk attempt on an OPEN lane and basket, losing us 10 seconds in the process….it was basketball suicide!
It is reasons like this, that a Vet like Mully should really start giving him game “IQ” lessons. So many times we are seeing Randolph pumped up to make that killer block, only for the attacker to see it coming, switch and make a soft dish to an incoming player with all the room in the world as Randolph comitted everything to the block and is now out of position.
There is no doubt his game is there……and he is operating like an Italian sports car! Great looking in action, does amazing things very quickly, but lacks the reliability to be a sensible long term investment. But…..you put a mechanic in there that knows the motor inside and out and your worry free!!
I have no doubt that if given the proper coaching (mindset coaching not ball stuff) he has the potential to be VERY VERY good.

another way small ball works
is when your smalls are better than their smalls. it certainly worked for the Pistons against us and the Bulls against us.
or if the bigs can’t take advantage of the smalls like Aldridge and Camby.

True
And this just proves my other post even more.
Nellie puts too much on his playmaker’s shoulders. It worked in Dallas and here a couple years ago because he had a player who can take his man off the dribble and create either for somebody or himself. We don’t have it here right now, maybe Crawford but that might be a stretch.
Another reason small ball worked was because you had 5 guys on the floor who can shoot the 3 (not very well I might add). This year it messes everything up because:
Biedrins – can’t shoot it.
Maggs – is better not to shoot it.
Buike – is struggling with it a bit.
Watson – not sure he has the range.
Belinelli – he would have fit Barnes/MP’s role. Some night he’ll make a bunch, the other he won’t find the bottom of the rim. Problem is he doesn’t have the intangibles those two have to stay on the floor (Barnes hustle/passing and MP’s defense).
SJax – you need legs for the 3pt shot, and SJax is using alot of his energy bringing the floor up and playing the whole damn game. He’s also a better catch and shoot player.
THE REST – not an option unless you want Kurz to enter the game.
That leaves Morrow and Crawford. One just had 2 games so we don’t know if it was a fluke and the other we just got so don’t know how he’ll turn out.

pass the ball!
opposing teams are crowding their bigs in the paint and daring us to either drive into trouble or take a contested outside shot, I’m sick of watching this. We have way too many ball hog scorers who need to make that extra pass. 20+ turnovers last night just ugly to watch, sloppy careless basketball totally unacceptable. Please, we have to rebound and defend, very poor effort. Give Morrow the ball, he needs to take more open shots and get his confidence back.

too bad jax and maggette are too busy driving in(to trouble) and trying to draw fouls
but that’s who they are. after 8 and 9 years, respectively, you’d think we’d realize that. they’re not going to change no matter who the coach or what the system is. not that CJ’s any better than a back up/3rd string PG, but the same plays sure look a lot different when he’s running them vs when Jack does.
but to expect these two players in particular to start changing their games in year 8 or 9 is probably unrealistic. this is who they are.
when they get calls, we’ll compete. when they don’t, it’s going to be a long night unless someone else is on fire like Morrow was for 2 games.

nah. i think objective fans realize this is the team and talent we have.
the homers just
(1)overestimate the team’s talent
(2)underestimate other team’s talent
(3)mistake potential for talent
they were on the road against a team that just had a coaching change while they just added a new player at a key position (PG). even the league’s resident d-league team, the okc thunder, only lost to the suns by 1 point. i don’t know what was going on with the Wiz being 1-10 before last night, but does anyone actually mistake them for OKC or Minny?

Give wright and randolph big brothers
The poster who said they need a mentor was exactly correct. maybe even more so with Randolph because Nellie seems to have a lot of faith in him despite his mistakes. he is playing a lot more minutes as a rookie than Wright did last year.
I think Randolph is in danger of losing confidence because Nellie gives him too much space to take bad shots. Rather than shooting whenever he is open to learn, he needs to pull back a little.
If he continues to perform poorly on offense he is going to get gunshy or develop bad habits and end up benched next year
