Five Reasons Why We Shouldn't Tank
With this horrible stretch of losses, some people have started saying we should punt on the season and just try to position ourselves for a high pick in next year's draft. It's an understandable impulse, but here are five reasons why we shouldn't do it.
1) Tanking Is Gross
As bad as we've generally been over the last fifteen years, we've almost never explicitly tanked... there's almost always some effort behind bad Warriors teams, no matter how misguided. Actual, honest-to-God tanking, like the Heat did last year and the Celts did the year before, is disgusting and dispiriting. I have friends who are Celtics fans who are still ashamed of '06-'07. We wouldn't respect ourselves in the morning.
2) Tanking Usually Doesn't Work Anyway
Very few teams become playoff contenders just because they land a top-five pick. For every Lebron and Dwight Howard, there are a whole bunch of Adam Morrisons and Shaun Livingstons and Drew Goodens and, dare we remember, Mike Dunleavys. Hell, J-Rich was the #5 pick, and as much as we all loved him, he never really got us anywhere.
3) It's A Weak Draft Class, With Lots Of Point Guards
Both these things are relevant. People are projecting next year's crop of rookies to be pretty middling... grabbing the #5 pick in this draft wouldn't mean nearly as much as it would in a strong year. Additionally, there'll be no shortage of point guards in the first round, most of whom show comparable potential. We may end up wanting a point guard for sure, but why strain for the third-best one when the fifth-best one will be about as good?
4) This Franchise Can't Stand Another Nightmare Year
Look at how crazed we've all gotten after a six-game losing streak early in the year. Those twelve years in the wilderness had their effects on this fanbase... Warriors fans are SCARRED. Yes, Oracle attendance generally remained high during the dark days, but I don't think it could survive another gut-wrenching fall down to the very bottom of the league. The difference between 26-56 and 36-46 might not mean much to some franchises, but it means a lot to this one. The franchise needs to convince the fans that this team is, if not good, at least still worth taking seriously.
5) We're Not Capable Of Tanking
I know this sounds odd. I'm not saying we're so good that we couldn't possibly manage to lose... that's ridiculous. As we know all too well, this team can lose. This team seems pretty damn good at it.
But think about what tanking generally entails. The way teams tank is to bench their star veterans for specious reasons and to give a lot of playing time to young, unproven guys. If we did that, we'd actually get better.
If Jackson, Maggette and Crawford all sat out the rest of the season with mysterious, undisclosed injuries, we'd improve. I'm not saying those guys are horrible (though they're all flawed and have all played poorly thus far)... I'm saying that minutes that don't go to Jackson, Maggette and Crawford will go to Wright, Watson, Turiaf, Randolph and Morrow. Nellie would be forced to play some bigger lineups, and in doing so, would accidentally start winning some games.
I'm not saying our young guys are world-beaters. Randolph's a spaz. Morrow may have been a flash in the pan. Marco's not very good. Watson probably isn't as good as he's been lately. But Wright *is* good, and so is Turiaf (who's only 25 himself), and we've played better with guys like Randolph and Morrow and Watson on the floor. Lineups composed of Monta, Biedrins and those guys would win some games.
Hell, think about Richard Hendrix. He's a second-round pick who's currently in the D-League... if you wanted to tank, he's the EXACT kind of player you'd turn to. Well, does anybody here think we'd be worse if we started playing Richard Hendrix? I sure as hell don't. He might not be any good, but he's a type of player we could use, so we certainly wouldn't suffer for his presence. This team is simply not designed to lose 60 games.
We will probably go something like 32-50, and get the ninth pick in the draft, and it'll sorta suck. But it's better than being terrible and hoping for a rookie savior. Tanking's gross, it usually doesn't work, it especially wouldn't work this year, it's not something this franchise can risk, and I don't think we could even do it if we tried.

Nobody should expect Playoffs for the youngest team in the league. At least near.500 record and I'll be satisfied
Along with improvement in Brandan Wright,Bellinelli, and Randolph.

I wonder how will that affect season ticket sales?
I have a lot of friends telling me “Man you’re lucky you didn’t renew” when truth be known we just couldn’t afford them anymore. I wish the price didn’t go up, no matter what the situation is, I woulda made the effort to attend all the games this season.
Shoot, We got season tix during Montgomery’s last year and that wasn’t a very good season, though I will say it was fun seeing Manta and Beans develop that year before Nellie came in! :-)

maybe the price will go down now and we can all afford them :)

That would be awesome!
Even when I tried 2 half it 3 ways it was still pricey for us! lol

same here but they raised the price after that season
even when they finished 34-48 for the second consecutive season so we didnt renew . Anyways the team that season with dunleavy and murphy wasnt playoff bound. the reason we got in the playoffs was because we got al and jack. i dont like jack but he is alot better than dunleavy

I’m not hoping for tanking, I’m hoping for to happen number 5. See what we have on the bench, this season is looking like a lost cause anyway. I don’t see a way for us to be worse off because of it.

The worst area is Limbo.
That’s the area when you miss out on a high pick and fail to make the playoffs. Which is what the Warriors are on pace for now….and for the past 15 years.
I’m not saying tanking is successful either. But at a certain point in the season, we just have to throw in the towel and play the young guys. Ride them to wins and losses as long as they’re getting consistent minutes.
The stupidest thing we could’ve done is re-sign Jack. OMG that was dumb.

Trading an appealing contract for Crawford was no picnic, either. I think most people don’t realize just how terrible those moves were for our future. A month ago we were a young team with flexibility… now we’re just a young team. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

yep. smart management like the Blazers keep losers like Lafrentz.
let’s hope win now teams like the Cavs or Mavs really like one of our guys and don’t get any better offers for Wally or Kidd.

5 reasons to tank
1. Brandon Jennings
2. No playoffs anyways
3. It means Stephen Jack and Maggette won’t play
4. It means Wright and Randolph will play
5. Brandon Jennings

Hype.
Jennings is all hype. Tell me exactly why you think Brandon Jennings is going to be the savior for the Warriors.

Jennings Wont Be A Savior
but he would help. He is already playing against good competion overseas and Nelly wouldn’t have a reason not to play the guy. But if we would get Jennings, We would have to get rid of at least 3 guards because it would be just way too much. Most expendable, CJ, M-Will (Oddly enough Jennings Cousin), Belli…. Release Crawford if he sucks too bad. He could play the 1 and let Monta play the two. The only problem would be that our backcourt would be might small

Yeah… but imagine the speed in the backcourt. No team could keep up with jennings and ellis!

5 reasons we should not
we are going to loose anyway
everyone is going to beat us
are best team is to small to beat anyone
our players are to young to figure out things on the court
we still are depending on undrafted free agents
ugh :( its sad but true. we need a real PF i get so pissed cause when i use them on NBA live using live i cant beat anyone Mags is the PF and everyone just shoots over him. and Bwright and AR are to skinny. we are a poorly made team.
So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!

your #3 is actually a ++
we need a friggen PG. look what losing baron did to our team… big man sure, but we wouldnt draft the right big man anyways, let’s draft a friggen PG in the first round for once.

Look at #1
On this list: http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=1617
I’ve never heard of this guy, but when looking at what was written about that guy, he looks real interesting. Except for the soft defender part of course. But think about having him at PF? Doubt it will happen unless Wright or Randolph is traded, which I wouldn’t want, but he does sound interesting.

Randolph

well
The GSW could tank while trying. If we continue to play they way we have for the last 6 games, it won’t matter if we try to not tank. We’ll end up tanking anyways if we don’t get our act together. Hopefully, with the return of Monta, everything will change and we’ll have our floor general.

Great post onlxn
Plus it’s a terrible way to treat loyal fans who are already getting shafted with ticket prices that most can’t afford. Ironically, we probably would slowly, but surely get better if we tried to tank. Hmmm, I wonder.

Attendance will drop this year, though the number of season ticket sales means that it won’t be until next year that the real results of poor play will be seen at the gate. Some fraction of the fans buy their tickets regardless, but attendance is way up from where it was when the team was struggling to win 30 games. I doubt that the proverbial extra ping pong balls is going to be enough to keep 1000s of fans from fleeing and waiting until after the mess is cleaned up.
The team is looking more and more like that 94 team that was going through the motions, waiting for April while Nellie was checking airfare back to Maui. I suspect that the hangover from ‘tanking’ also takes a while to purge. Players get used to losing. “Tanking” if there’s not going to be a major housecleaning will probably bring more negative long run. It will be hard to have a major housecleaning as the contracts are currently configured.

Well...
I’d never openly root for my team to tank. I tune in to watch fun, exciting and competitive basketball. But…
I’ve said this many times before, it’s better to be really bad for one year (or even two) than just ok for 12. As a fan I can suck it up as long as I see a vision or a direction coming from the management. The Blazers didn’t get to be the up and coming team they are now overnight. The problem is that our front office currently lacks the vision necessary to be trusted. We can’t even say for sure who is making the personnel decisions. This is not an ideal year for us to stink with the lackluster draft class and the turmoil in the front-office. Just our luck.
As a fan the things I’m looking forward to are getting to watch the young guys play to see what we’ve got, the return of Monta, and hopefully the team finding some chemistry by the end of the season to carry over into next year. If we get a high lottery pick in the process, I’m not complaining.

What if you’re really bad for three years in the midst of a series where you get as high as just ok a few times in the 12. Stinking and getting a high lottery pick is not a guarantee of turning things around. Having the #1 overall seems like it’s got about a 50-50 chance of landing a guy good enough to give the team a bump out of mediocre. Throwing games for at best a 25% shot at that 50-50 chance? Sure, other high draft choices beyond the top can, and do help and they’re more likely to help than someone drafted later, but it still seems like losing for draft position isn’t really a winning proposition.

True...
which is exactly why I would never openly root for my team to tank. I didn’t say this outright in my post but I did imply and do believe that luck is a huge factor. In our 12 year slump our best picks ended up being guys like Joe Smith and Dunleavy. Not horrible players by any means but picking up average players with top picks won’t turn your franchise around. Let’s see if maybe this year we can get lucky and start moving in the right direction. I just don’t see a lot of reason to be optimistic whether we land a high draft pick or not…
