Shawn Marion?

Shawn Marion. We need to make a good trade or two, with one of our four main guards/forwards (because they make the most), to clear cap space, and then try to SIGN THIS GUY IN THE OFFSEASON.  That's my opinion anyways.

Marion:
1) clearly hasn't slowed down (he's 30)
2) a great defender
3) plays the 3 or the 4
4) PERFECT fit for nellie ball
5) career averages of 18/10 (from the 3!!!) with 1.9stl and 1.4 blks per
6) MIGHT take less to sign with a run and gun team

If we trade for an expiring contract, this allows us to do several things:
1) slightly tank by trading one of our main players. even though it's a risk and you're never assured a player will sign with your team, but hey, we'd have cap space for 2010!!
2) explore our younger players, unless we trade them
3) along those lines : get a higher draft pick.
4) maybe get a draft pick or younger player via trade
5) keep our coach

So the bottom line is this.  If Ellis comes back and we don't start playing better, we need to make a trade.  Time together as a core unit doesn't heal this porous of a defense.  I'd say get Marion.  Many teams are saving up for 2010, or at least have their eye out, and probably won't start worrying about it until NEXT year (cough knicks), meaning many teams won't make offers to this years F/A class.  Marion is ripe for the pickins!  Hey we could even trade for him this year and sign him to an extension, players seem to like that.

what are your thoughts?

meh

i’ve always thought marion was a bit overrated, at least offensively. he loves to take 3s, but hes a terrible 3 point shooter. and in nellieball he would be jacking them up even more than normal. just look at maggette

I think I agree

"terrible 3pt shooter"

doesn’t even begin to scrape the surface of the looming, gargantuan edifice that is shawn marion’s jump shot. what he does when he attempts to throw the ball into the hole from beyond an arm’s length is a terrible perversion of nature itself. if there is a god, surely shawn marion’s jump shot is his most base, fetid excrement; the source of his greatest celestial guilt. god(s) have mercy on our souls should he join the warriors…(sigh of disgust)

Marion Would Have to Buy In

Sort of like Al, he must accept he is not a superstar but a good basketball player. His best attributes are his quick jumping ability and ability to get end to end. But you cannot sign this guy to more than a 2 year deal. When his legs are gone, his career is over.

agree

but isn’t he already doing this over in Miami?

Thank you, Dubs.

Marion=Glorified Garbage Man

Or, as someone once put it, “the only all-star who can’t create his own shot”.

I hope Marion wrote Nash a thanksgiving card, because Nash made him everything he is. Clearly cannot shoot unless he’s WIDE open and certainly not off the dribble. Historically averse to passing and getting fouled. FT% has inexplicably declined from mid 80s to around 70% these last 4 seasons. For such a bad scorer, he sure doesn’t mind chucking: 18.2 points on 15.2 shots in his career. AND he’s a primadonna.

NO THANKS

where to start

hes shawn marion: perennial all-star known for his defense, dunking, rebounding etc? bah, we don’t need that!! we need… wait, yep that’s what we need.

secondly, 15 shots at 48, i friggen HATE good fg! 48% is better than anyone on our team but beans, turiaf (not this year) and wright who really doesn’t count considering he has barely played.

also, he’s not much of a primadonna. he made a small comment last year about being traded… I’ve heard more from marcus williams than shawn marion.

I’ve seen him dribble and put up a tear drop TIME AND TIME again. he creates his own shot by getting offensive rebounds and putbacks and cutting to the hoop BRILLIANTLY. i’m talking possibly the best cutter in the game. not many people are kobe my friend.

oh yea, did you have any valid points?

by HoLdEmUP on Dec 2, 2008 12:55 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

actually

he had a bunch of valid points. he is a prima donna. his feud with amare over who should be “the guy” as nash aged was well publicized. it seems like a bad idea to add another guy with that complex to this roster.

he isn’t a good shooter, it’s just that he has played with the type of guys who allow him to be wide open. he makes open jumpers, something that happens way more often in phoenix with nash running the show than it does here with cj and jack playing the point.

putbacks and running the break don’t generally count as creating your own offense, but i agree with the general point that the guy can score, particularly on the break. but he relies on distributors. you don’t run your offense through him. again, we don’t have any true passers on the roster.

i like him as a player, and think that getting him as a rental for the year couldn’t make things much worse, particularly if we unloaded a big contract and would probably be a good call. just don’t go after him this offseason and give him a fat contract (which we can’t afford anyway).

the HUGE contract idea

i agree we shouldn’t sign him to a ton of money, but chances are the free agent market won’t be strong this off-season with 2010 looming, and he would likely take less to play on an up tempo team. i don’t think ANYONE could catch marion and monta on a fast break. also, he gives us the steals we have completely lost with baron gone. i haven’t heard bob say “so-and-so with the steal!” in the last 10 games with the exception of CJ last night, which made me think about what our defense lacks.

it’s the same defense, we just don’t force turnovers.

he is a poor spot up shooter, but still has a very high fg%, especially from his position. i believe he knows what he’s doing.

as far as him being a prima-donna, there have been very small feuds but the never resulted in anything and I mean, we took STEPHEN JACKSON for heavens sake.

if im not mistaken...

this is coming from the same guy who came up with the brilliant idea of trading 4 of our future stars for duncan…lol…althought this one seems a little more realistic…until we find out who he wants to trade from the warriors for marion…

by war i are. on Dec 2, 2008 2:17 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

trade Maggette

Maggette + Williams+ Belli for Marion, use future cap space to steal Boozer or Odom.

by shootda3 on Dec 2, 2008 6:53 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

+1

just fir getting rid of a redundant position and a bad fit in corey magette

by highflya on Dec 2, 2008 11:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

seems good

and roster wise, it even fits for miami, but they have deal with d-wade’s free agency. it seems unlikely that they would take on maggette’s contract. we’d need to assume that the heat will have enough cash to bring wade back and build a contender after the deal. it might be tough to convince them of that.

by cap'n hack on Dec 2, 2008 12:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

which is probably why

we would have to go after marion in FA unless we gave the heat a lot of younger, cheaper players that expired soon, coupled with one of our higher paid players.

I dream of...

…seeking out players because they’ll help us win and become a solid playoff squad, instead of assessing who’d be best suited to play Nellieball.

More Trades

Screw it, lets just keep trading till we get it right, its the BEST way to run a team.

TOTALY!

by sjboy on Dec 2, 2008 8:19 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

No thanks.

I’ve always thought that Marion was way overrated, the only reason he was ever an All-Star was because of the players on his team (Nash, Amare).

Plus, he’d ruin the little chemistry that our guys are building.

Monta! Montaye! Montae!

by Baked Biedrins on Dec 2, 2008 12:45 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

yea that chemistry is HOT right now baby!

7 losses in a row is some smokin chemistry man.

Marion sucks.

Just as simple as that.
