Letting Baron go worst business decision ever

If you are running a business, it makes no sense to let your biggest and best asset go. That's what the Warriors did when they let Baron go. I know Rowell has been saying he chose to leave, but everything the Warriors (Rowell) did during the off-season led him to that decison. He made everyone else on the team so much better, and excited the home crowd like no other . He was so clutch too.  I don't think the Warriors will ever have a player like that ever again. We aren't a franchise that will be able to attract the top free agents. I guess we are what we are. We had a glimpse of what it was like to be an exciting, good team for a brief spell while Baron was here, but i think the Warriors now and in the future will be as we have always been, mediocre. We may get good players, but none with the confidence that match the skills Baron had. I'm tired of watching Maggette and Crawford and Jackson shoot so many bad shots. They get their numbers, and that is all Maggette and Crawford seem to care about. They are set in their ways and at this point in both their careers, they aren't going to change or get better. Didn't we know this before we acquired them? My impression of both Maggette and Crawford were high scorers who didn't really help their team win. They both don't have exceptional skills, don't make their teammates better, and are very expensive. It's so obvious what we lack, even once Ellis comes back. Are we going to make any moves that make sense for the franchise? Probably not.
COHAN, please just announce Mullin has full control over personnel decisions so Warrior fans can have a glimmer of hope.  The Rowell thing isn't working. Maybe Mullin can muster up a little more of his magic with Rowell not in his way screwing up things.

we all know baron was everything. ball handling, shooting, passing, swagger… he is the man.

+1

+/- Clippers w/ Baron on the floor (-2.6) vs. not having him on the floor (-17.8) they are +15.3

in other words, when Baron’s in the game, the Clips are barely losing. versus when he comes out, they get blown off the floor. btw, he was +7.5 for us last season, highest on the team.

Stop!

just shut up already please. he left the warriors months ago and you’re still looking back. you want him here but guess what… he doesn’t want to be a warrior. can we just worry about who wants to be in the bay.

Mullin's contract is up at the end of the season.

Baron Was The Warriors

Worse move ever!! You took away the heart and soul of the team and the crowd favorite. Did you hear Marc Jackson and Van Gundi’s comment about how terrible this team is? Forget wins and losses..he made you watch the warriors. With an improved Biedrins, Monte back with Jack and Morrow/Randolph may have made the playoffs.

agreed

BD was a great fit for the GSW game and chemistry. Echo what “hoopscorer23” said – BD was everything. Plus the intangibles, swagger to dunk over AK47 and splashing down the game winner against the Celtics. Got game and high bball IQ. What a package.

Just got a reminder of vintage BD tonight (against portland). Both Zach and him had monster games and throw in a game tying buzzer 3 just to show that he is still da man.

I miss Baron too

… and JRich.

I’ll miss Monta and Biedrins too when they’re traded for cap space.

Mullin will be gone after this season...

Good luck with the Knicks Mully. Thanks for all the solid moves you made the past 2 season. I for one will always cheer you a Warrior great, and know you will get the job done in NY.

Definitely agree...

…it was a complete slap in the face for Rowell to say Baron wasn’t worth $39 mil. That’s a bargain for a top-flight PG. That’s not even close to Parker or Nash money. After salvaging a franchise that was right next to the Clippers as being a complete joke in this league, they owed him the chance to finish his career here. The last All-Star we had was Latrell Sprewell, and although Baron didn’t have any All-Star appearances in a Warrior uniform, he brought the swagger and the stigma of a star. That was something this organization was lacking for God knows how long. Swagger and fire are two things you can’t just instill in somebody. They either have it in them or not. If you’re looking merely at the W-L column, it doesn’t do justice to what Baron was able to accomplish here. He re-injected excitement into downtrodden fans, and gave them hope when many had given up. All the fans that call him a sellout obviously don’t know the real truth, that their beloved Dubs are run by a pair of jackasses (Cohan & Rowell) that care more about “long-term salary protection” than putting a winning team on the floor, and giving the man who saved this franchise the respect he was due. He should have had his number retired alongside Wilt & Rick Barry, but instead, all he can do is hope for the best in Clipperland. Good luck BD…except when you play us.

It hurts my soul

that everything you just wrote is true. Like every true fan, I was optimistic about our new squad. I thought we’d be deeper, better defensively, and that we’d take a slight offensive hit. But I had no idea it’d be so hard to replace BD’s energy and confidence. Jackson was really able to flourish as a sidekick to BD. Investing in one meant investing in both and that’s where Rowell really missed the boat as a good investor.

Duke grad student missing the Bay but holding it down for the Dubs from afar.

His return

When Baron come back in January he deserves one hell of an ovation because we finally see how much he meant to this organization over the last few years

Hell yea

I made it a point to get tickets to that game this year. I can’t wait to see the highlights reel they make for him when he comes back.

by Captain Jack on Dec 13, 2008 12:39 PM PST up reply actions

Baron...

will be missed. The Warriors moved him out of town like every other good player we’ve had (Richmond, Webber, Arenas, J-Rich, ect.). The Warriors have been totally inept at making sound business decisions under the ownership of Cohan. Oh well.

by chrisgatling on Dec 13, 2008 12:16 PM PST reply actions

The kicker

Rowell wouldn’t resign Baron and cited financial reasons/injury concerns (despite Baron playing every game last season), meanwhile, he signs Maggette to a big dollar contract for five years and where has he been? Out the last 3 games with an injury.

One of the announcers the other night had it right when he said with the kind of game Golden State plays, they absolutely have to have a solid point guard and even though CJ is good, he’s not at the level this team needs in order to win games. And it shows. We could have a lineup of the best shooters in the league, but without a smart point guard to act as the “glue”, it won’t come together. Last year they jelled – this year they play like it’s the first time they’ve been on the floor together.

The Warriors management count on having fans continue to fill up the Oracle even if the team sucks because they know there’s a hungry basketball fan base in the bay area. When I lived back in Pennsylvania, the Sixers would have sucky years, but they were sandwiched inbetween years they won the division or conference championships — and even then, the level of fan excitement was nowhere near what it is here. And that’s the real shame — we deserve a championship caliber team. But it starts at the top. If Cohan was serious about having a winning team versus owning a team and raping the profits, he would have fired Rowell’s ass by now for letting Baron go. Sadly, the only way I foresee any real change happening is for the team to become unprofitable enough for Cohan to want to sell it. Or maybe whenever the next All Star game is held in Oakland, enough people will boo Cohan when he’s introduced that he’ll die of embarrassment.

Our biggest and best asset has a worse record than we do?

The supposed experts say the Clips have better talent than us and yet Baron has a worse record. What does it tell us? That Baron is over rated and his teams never end up going anywhere. Sorry to break up your Baron love fest by bringing up the facts.

by smearthebeard on Dec 13, 2008 1:01 PM PST reply actions

Is that so...

Guessed you missed classic Baron last night hitting a three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime

by warriorsalltheway on Dec 13, 2008 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

yep

i guess even a really good player can’t get a really terrible supporting cast to a winning record. baron might be the only reason that team isn’t winless. the five guys we put on the floor are better than the five guys they do, but we don’t have one player who’s better than baron right now.

heart of a champion, will of the warrior.

ok they are 6-17 now

and just beat the blazers ON THE ROAD and the rockets at home! the clips are a decent team now that they have randolph and kaman isn’t lumbering around out there. i thoroughly expect them to be a .500 club if not better. (they’d be better if they didn’t have mike duncrappy)

by HoLdEmUP on Dec 14, 2008 12:31 AM PST up reply actions

calm down, you're missing the point.

the point is the Clippers are losing big b/c when Baron goes out of the game to rest, the other team is going on a huge run b/c the rest of that team sucks.

secondly, while he’s helped his team in terms of the score while he’s been on the floor, Maggette’s hurt the warrior’s in terms of the score when he’s been on the floor. the Clippers play much, much worse when Baron is on the bench. meanwhile, the Warriors play better when Maggette is not on the floor.

by the evil monkey on Dec 14, 2008 12:32 AM PST up reply actions

jesus you guys, I love Baron, but he is gone and we have to get over it. That being said the Warriors didn’t “let him go” he opted out of his contract and didn’t accept our new offer. Just think about it, he kept on saying how he wanted to play in LA to end his career, there was no changing his mind

by sfgiants114 on Dec 13, 2008 9:48 PM PST reply actions

we never gave him a new offer. that 3 for 39 extension was before he opted out. w/ rowell wanting the 3rd year to be a team option. bd’s agent said after they opted out and news of the clipper offer was made known, they left msgs w/ the w’s for a counter offer, but the w’s never called back.

by the evil monkey on Dec 14, 2008 12:23 AM PST up reply actions

I'd take JR over Baron any day.

Let Baron rot in LA. Gives us a chance to draft a young PG.

Hasheem "The Dream" Thabeet or Brandon Jennings. A Warrior in 09.
With the 6th Pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the SF Giants pick Donovan Tate.
Andre Smith in Silver & Black in 2009.

we just need to find that guy

by cap'n hack on Dec 14, 2008 6:09 PM PST up reply actions

it's funny

how people still really hate on the guy because the man “opted out on us.” baron resurrected our sorry ass franchise, brought us to the playoffs which is pretty much the f’n promise land to a playoff hungry team, made HUGE plays for us down the stretch against GREAT teams, made the oracale arena the place to be on any give night, FINALLY gave us national recognition, and last but not least, made us a REAL COMPETITIVE TEAM. what more did he have to do to deserve an extention?!

we lost our star player. he had that swag/confidence that had SUPERSTAR written all over him. hopefully monta can show us that he too has that swag/confidence in himself to be that superstar we need.
