Giving Maggs a 2nd chance...
As most of you know, Maggs is available for trade today. He does have quite a large contract for us to move which is $50 mil til 2012-2013. This will mos def make it tough to get another team to get him off our hands.
But, with recent interviews, Nelson has been calling for more ball movement. Maggs has responded:
"If I've got to sacrifice not driving, or not shooting too much, that's fine with me. That's the type of player I am."
Cap'n Jack has even expressed a bit of confidence too:
"That's going to be interesting to see how it works," Stephen Jackson added. "I think Corey's been around long enough to know how to make adjustments. It's something definitely new to him, but he'll be all right."
Right now we are 3-13 with Maggs, 4-4 without.
So if, and this is a biiiiiiiiggggg IF, Maggs does turn a new leaf and goes from a black hole to a sharing is caring type player you think we'll see more success? or should we not take the chance and trade him anyway?

I dn't own a Blu-Ray Player
But if I did… The Dark Knight would be the 1st BRD I would get! Makes me wanna buy a PS3 now! (and a new TV LOL!) MLB The show comes out next month! (I think)
+1
I was hoping that sony would come out with a TDK themed PS3…but they never did, so I don’t own a bluray player either. A batman ps3 would’ve killed this xmas and i would not have been able to resist.
"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."
Maggette Needs To Go!!!
I hear Shawn Marion, and Gerald Wallace may be traded, we should go for one of them. I don’t know how contracts work out, and I don’t think neither Miami or Charlotte will want to pick up Maggette’s contract, but who does? lol
No Marion
he sucks, i’d rather have Wallace if we had too, but let’s trade him for Josh Howard!

Haha....
We should just trade Maggette for PBA’s Nelson “Da Bull” Asaytono (90s version). LOL.

Maggette SAYS the right things
but all signs so far point to the opposite. He playing style is like the antisocial guy at the office – keeping to himself, doing things on his own, not wanting to interact with anyone. It would take a MASSIVE amount of effort to bring Maggette “out of his shell” and connect with his teammates on the court. Unless he has shown signs of supporting his teammates in practice that we don’t get to see, I’d say forget wasting energy on him and ship him out.
However, to answer your big IF, if Maggette balances out his driving and foul magnet ability with some slick passing (or even some basic passing), I do think we’ll see more success. It would make him a multiple threat, make him harder to guard, and make our teammates better when they get wide open looks.
If he gets that far, then he’ll also have to work on his defense. I haven’t watched him defensively that much, but based on other observers around here, he seems to not put that much effort into playing defense, not even trying to stick his hand up in a shooter. Of course, the question comes down to is, does he WANT to improve?
keep for now because we desperately need someone like him on offense
but he needs to drive to the hoop and NEVER shoot a jumper ever again. but I guess he has to keep the defense honest…
i also agree that maggs says the right things, but seems to be just “saying” them instead of acting on them. we’ll see.
Give him a shot...
The guy would be great for our team considering the positives he does add: driving to the rim, getting fouled, shooting high FT % IF he can share the ball a bit more, stop shooting 3’s (what is he shooting, 18% on 3’s) and just try to get everyone else involved. And if Nelson stops playing him at the 4, which I doubt
by Pearlsofwisdom on Dec 15, 2008 11:46 AM PST reply actions
well if they can move him for an expiring and youth/picks they should.
if they can’t (99%), they should restrict his minutes a la Beasley. don’t let him anywhere near the court in the 4th quarter unless he plays smarter defense. 20-30 minutes only and try not to have him and Crawford on the floor at the same time.

It’s true, Crawford and Maggette is a pretty poisonous defensive combo. I just find it odd that Maggette is labeled as the villain while Crawford gets off scot-free. Crawford’s the worse defender, in my opinion, and we’re 2-11 with Crawford in the lineup. Crawford, incredibly, has a total of four rebounds in his last five games… at least Maggette will grab some boards.
It’s easy to pinpoint the Maggette signing as the disastrous move, but really the Crawford trade was far worse. We could’ve possibly lived with Maggette’s defense, but we decided to really screw ourselves by adding another defensive cipher who doesn’t score nearly as effectively as Maggette does. Crawford’s more likeable and more fun to watch, but he’s a bigger problem for our future than Maggette.
Except for Crawford is only signed for 2 more years and
plays the 2, which he have no other player that has etablished himself as a starter. Wheras Maggette is signed for 4 more years and plays the same position as our current best player(Jackson) and our most exciting prospect plays(Randolph).
Also there is a likable thing going on as well. If you watched the last 3 games, before that debacle in Denver, Crawford was making an attempt to make the extra pass to get other people involved. He said that to explain his dip in shots and points.
While I say the Maggette is more disatrous than the Crawford deal, we both agree they were both terrible moves. The thing about Crawford, is we could of gotten way more for Harrington, as he was an expiring contract(before the Lebron Frenzy) and a servicable player.
What is the status of our petitions to fire Robert Rowell and have Chris Cohan commit Hari Kiri, or at least sell the team?

Jax, Maggs, and Monta would be happy splitting time at the 2. Starting your post with this line is laughable. You’re bashing Maggs while he’s playing injured and out of position while saying that Crawford is fine even though he’s playing his natural position and not doing it that great. He’s contributed absolutely nothing on the glass, nothing. Maggette will be good if he’s actually given a chance to not guard the Carlos Boozers of the NBA.

Old dog, Old tricks.
Passing to the open man isn’t some new way of playing basketball. I find it funny that Nelson calling our new style of play “European”. What! Passing the ball to the open man, I teach that to my 6th grade boys team at St. Andrews. Maggs is who he is. He has never ever, passed to get others invovled in the game. Not at Duke, ( where he came off the bench cause he was not a team player) the Magic, ( that traded him after 2 seasons) or the Clippers, ( who didn’t even give him an offer this off season) He is a loser who has played on losing teams. 50 mil well spent!
The key for Maggette isn’t trying to become a passer all of a sudden… it’s getting healthy enough to do his thing, at his natural position.
Maggette is a solidly good small forward. He scores unusually well and rebounds fairly well… passes and defends poorly, yeah, but you still come out solidly ahead with that package. He’s a horrible power forward for obvious reasons, but I for one can’t hold that against him. And he’s played a bit below his normal level thus far, thanks to his extended time at the four, an iffy hamstring, the disappearance of his schizo three-point touch (he was very, very good at hitting them last year, lest we forget).
W’s fans like to label Maggette a loser. It’s an understandable impulse, as he’s generally played on bad teams, and his game looks selfish. But his game is effective… when he’s healthy, it helps you win games. I’d rather see the Corey Maggette of last season than some new passing version. Jack’s feeble imitations of pointguarddom are hurting us enough as it is… the last thing we need is another guy trying to be something he’s not.
"the last thing we need is another guy trying to be something he’s not."
Those are words to live by. Maggette has lots of value when healthy and used correctly. The other guys can do the other things and Mags can do his and we’ll be stronger for it. We’ve been wanting a tough go to the hole and draw fouls type of guy and now that we got him everyone is dissing him?

Assessing & Adapting
I agree with onlxn, and would add that most posters judging Maggette ignore the fact that he hasn’t been 100% healthy nor has he been playing with the full compliment of talents on the roster – he’s been playing hurt for the good of the team on occasion and clearly not playing his best
Nelson’s comments belie a suspicion I’ve had for some time – namely Nelson turned Maggette loose to drive and score as much as possible probably because we are so short-handed and young. So what looked like selfish play may very well have been at the coach’s behest. There hasn’t been a hint of player animosity toward Maggette’s proclivity for trying to score everytime he touches the ball, which I’d’ve expected on a losing team – again, unless everyone knows Nelson had sanctioned that. Now that Nelson says the dubs are adjusting to a more Euro/passing style we’ll see if either of the old dogs can learn new tricks indeed.
you probably wouldn’t have that suspicion had you watched Maggette last season with the Clips. this is who he is. he had the hamstring problems last season as well. difference is he’s shooting lousy from 3 pt land. he’s good in games where he gets calls, bad in games where he doesn’t. basically, the more officials let things go or aren’t fooled by the cassell and fisher crafty veteran type tricks, the worse game Maggette is going to have. depending on how whistle happy the refs are, the better the game he’ll have.

Interesting perspective...
I’d like to believe that, and hopefully it comes to fruition with the return of all our players (including Monta.) But unfortunately I don’t see Nelson sticking Maggette back at the 3 where he belongs, so we are kinda stuck with his crappy boards and D at the 4
no second chance
maggette will not change no matter what he says…until i start seeing him move the ball and being unselfish on a consistent basis, i stand for trading him still.
When Maggette missed those consecutive shots in a span of a humming bird’s flap,
Crawford simply looked at the bench and said, "Are you serious?"
Second chance and a pipe dream . . .
. . . but once Maggette returns from his injury I’d like to see him come off of the bench as a leader for the second squad. This will help limit his minutes, ease him back into things, and hopefully reduce Jackson’s minutes (40/game! It would be nice if Jackson got his first break with 1 or 2 minutes left in the 1st quarter rather than 4 minutes left in the 2nd). Plus, I think that Maggette would go off and really be able to exploit the subs on other teams.
that would be excellent
good post dub

Honestly, I wouldnt rule it out. But fine even if you take that one away our winning % is far better without him. I hated this signing, I hate it even more now, and I’m afraid I’ll hate it even more in 4 years.
The wins without Maggette: Den, OKC, Mil, Minn
The Denver win, early in the year stands out. The others were beating up on teams unlucky enough to be even more pathetic than the Warriors.
So...
Your point is that this team sucks with or without Maggette. So he’s still an unknown in the equation.
Also note that the Denver win was on the exact day that they’d traded AI to Detroit and Billups hadn’t come over yet. Let’s just say that Anthony Carter played 38 minutes, Dahntay Jones started. They were a little shorthanded.

Sounds about right to me. And if you look at the performance of specific lineups, Maggette seems to be an asset at the 3, a disaster at the 4… that sounds right to me too.
Honestly, this Maggette hatred is getting a little bizarre. He’s been hurt and out of position, and he’s still scoring more efficiently than anyone on the team besides Wright and Biedrins. Maggette certainly hasn’t been much of an asset so far, but he wouldn’t make my list of Top Five Season Villains right now. The guy will be fine.
Maggette’s a lot better than Azubuike… much more efficient scorer, similar everywhere else. Azubuike’s probably the better defender, but not by much… he’s pretty bad defensively, which we all ignore because we like him.
I won’t argue that having both guys is a little redundant, but I don’t think the solution should’ve necessarily been to not sign Maggette and to give Azubuike starter’s minutes. Maggette is good enough to start… ‘Buike probably isn’t.
Sorry...
I have a strange sense of humor and often do things simply to amuse myself.
I agree wholeheartedly with your points and comparison of Maggette and Buke. Give Maggette a little time to get healthy, he’ll be fine.

That and stop turning him into Pietrus
Seriously, Pietrus? Harrington? Maggette? Barnes? What do all these guys have in common? They’ve been excessively bashed by GSoM Warriors fans. What else? They’ve all been forced to play a position, Power Forward, that they can’t play very well. It’s not their fault, it’s just that they happen to be the best player on the floor capable of playing the position. Nellie is always going to put out the best players, it just so happens that none of them are power forwards, so somebody gets stuck smelling Carlos Boozer’s armpits.

Maybe at the 3.
If Maggs was playing small forward and was sandwiched between two better defenders yes. In the starting line-up if Jacks at the 2 and Wright/R.T. at the 4. Or off the bench, but we all know that won’t happen so trade him. For a PF. How good is Millsap looking? Wish we could swing a deal for him.
Always a ball hog
Azubukie is becoming like that too
I will always be your fan JRich. Good Luck
he really is
i’ve been a huge kaz fan since day one even though i’m a hoosier, but he really needs to take less shots. his forays into the lane are getting ridiculous.

Whats he supposed to say?
There is no PG out there to run plays ( thanks Monta ). Look at Denver and how much better they got with Billups. Thats what we need someone who is a legit threat at the point running the show.
Thanks Monta!
