Petition to Sign Carlos Boozer

As some of you may or may not know, Carlos Boozer said recently that he will opt out of his contract after this year and become a free agent.

I think we all know that the Warriors biggest weakness is a lack of a big body for defense and rebound purposes.  And just so the team doesn't get pushed around so much.

So many times I hear that talked about on here and people say "We need someone like Carlos Boozer".  Well, why not the real thing, actuall getting Carlos Boozer?

Because we have all the other parts.  Regardless of how bad the team is doing, the Warriors have some good pieces:

Biedrins:  Solid Center

Turiaf:  Good backup Center

Monta:  Star player

Randolph, Belinelli, CJ, Azubuke:  Good depth to mix with Monta at the guard spots

Wright and Randolph:  Young talent with some height

Then you throw in Boozer, you have the power forward that is the only real missing link here.

Magette and SJax I left off the list because I don't think the team needs Magette and I am currently extremely frustrated with SJax's performance this year.  Both are way underperforming in regards to how much they are being paid.  If the Warriors need to clear some cap room, I would be fine with trading either or both of these guys for somebody or some players with expiring contracts so they can bring in Boozer.

I know a trade like that may be difficult to find, but 29 other teams out there, maybe one of them would have use for Magette of SJax and be willing to make a move.  I don't know, but this seems like a move that would drastically improve the team and make them an immediate contender.

This should be the number 1 objective of the Warriors off-season.

Sign the peitition if you agree.

I Wish

I don’t think the Warriors will be able to sign Boozer. He would be great for the Warriors, but then again, he’d be great for any team. I don’t think signing Boozer would turn the Warriors into an instant contender. I think we’d have to see on how the remainder of the season goes and the progression of the squad.

We can't afford Boozer, but...

What if we traded Maggette for him? Utah’s missing link is a high scoring swing man, to play the 2 or 3. It would be an odd trade, since Boozer just has this year left, and Maggs has 5, but I would think Utah would love to lock in a 20ppg for a few years. We’d be fine taking the risk of losing Maggs and Boozer for the reward of possibly locking him in.

I think Utah would consider it, since they won’t have the money to sign a top FA.

Haha!

I’m trying to pull this exact trade off in my fantasy basketball league, but i’m throwing T. Outlaw in with maggs. maybe if it works in my league, it’ll work in the nba.

Utah would love to lock in a 20ppg for a few years.

But not one with a bad hamstring. They could probably do better for their money.

Also...

…not to crap on the parade, but despite his scoring and his big muscles, Boozer is a pretty piss poor defender.

by Zack Vank on Dec 18, 2008 7:46 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t really think Boozer really would want to our team, or so I remember hearing somewhere, but it would be worth a shot, only if we could get rid of Maggette

Jumping the gun...

I think we need to start with a petition to change the CBA because under the current rules we don’t have a snowballs chance in… uh, southern California in landing the guy. It would be a miracle for us to shed enough salary in time to make a competitive offer. Even then he probably doesn’t have Oaktown on his short list of dream destinations.

I posted this in the Felton trade diary but i will post it here too.

I know hindsight is 20-20, but come on! How can we dish out long term contracts to Maggette and Jack without considering the much, much, much better FA’s inn 2009 and 2010. Here’s what we should have done:

1. Not sign Maggette to a contract. This was a desperation move on the Warriors part to sign ANYONE. I seriously question if they knew who they were signing when they threw out all that money. They probably picked a name out of a hat.

2. Trade Al Harrington for Malik Rose’s expiring contract.

I can accept in this scenario that the Warriors still resign Jack to his absurd contract extension. But still this is around $19M off the current warriors books. Factor in Monta and Andris’ deals and we’d be around $10M under the cap. This probably wouldn’t be enough to entice Boozer to come over, so we’d need to dump some remaining contracts..Turiaf maybe? Well this is all hindsight now. But this scenario gives the Warriors a much better position to go forward.

True

Maybe add BWright? If (when) they lose Boozer, they’ll have an adequate replacement in Millsap. But Okur and Kirilenko are aging, and Kufous has shown no huge potential. They’d probably love a potential Kirilenko replacement.

Blake Griffin = Better Carlos Boozer

We gotta win the Lottery though, so let’s play it out.

Hasheem "The Dream" Thabeet or Brandon Jennings. A Warrior in 09.
With the 6th Pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the SF Giants pick Donovan Tate.
Andre Smith in Silver & Black in 2009.

by ejdacanay on Dec 18, 2008 8:30 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm always wary of making "better than" comparisons.

Mickael Pietrus = Euro Jordan (LOL)
Mike Dunleavy = Larry Bird
Ike Diogu = Elton Brand
Patrick O’Bryant = uhhh…

Griffin is good. Don’t get me wrong, but he’s not the franchise big in the Duncan or Garnett mold. I think he’ll be more of a Amare Stoudamire type forward. He needs to improve that outside shot, and attempt to play defense. He’s got the tools, he just needs to refine that aspect of his game.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Dec 18, 2008 8:41 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pietrus was the only one of those I believed lol.

Blake Griffin is the Diamond in a particularly weak draft class. He is this year’s Beasley, certainly some one you can build around. However all he he is lacking a good jumpshot (I’ve said it a couple times on other posts). Defense will get better once he gets in the NBA. But yes, I’ve been following the Euroleague, the Sooners, and the Huskies and so far imo Griffin and Thabeet have been performing the best.

agreed.

Can’t help but be disappointed after the last two year’s frosh classes.

It’s unfortunate how the Warriors always seem to get high draft picks in weak drafts.

I honestly believe that finding a true PG will uplift this team moreso than a PF would. I am absolutely not saying that a legit PF isn’t a need. It’s just that we have so many scorers on this team, we don’t have a consistent playmaker.

The depth of the PG class this year is deep. But there are no Rose’s, Paul’s or D. WIlliams’. I don’t expect Rubio to come out until 2010. This leaves Brandon Jennings as a top candidate for our selection (guessing 7-10, conservatively speaking). I think he’s too flashy and turnover prone for his own good. And his shot selection leaves a lot to be desired, but he’s still got the best playmaking ability in the upcoming draft. Ty Lawson could be considered, but not with a Top 10 pick, same with Eric Maynor or Johnny Flynn.

I’m hoping Jrue Holiday turns it up in SoCal. He seems to be just what the doctor ordered. He can play either guard position and defends very well. He’d be ideal next to Monta so they can cross match. His Bruin teammate is also an option, Darren Collison, but still not looking like a lottery pick. Other names to watch are Oklahoma’s Willie Warren, and UConn’s Kemba Walker.

If all other options are off the board (especially if SAC is picking before us as PG is their biggest hole right now imo), then we should go BPA. I’m intrigued by Earl Clark. He’s a bit redundant with Randolph, but he’s going to be a very versatile player in the NBA (I think he’s a cross between Boris Diaw, in Marvin Williams’ body).

Thabeet might be the selection. He’s still very raw though. He can just dominate in college due to his size. I’d like to see how he does at the combine and at individual matchups before committing to him. He does flash a meanstreak which is good.

Another option is James Harden, last year’s Pac-10 player of the year (yes over OJ Mayo and Kevin Love). He’s gone off early this year. Looking at his stats it looks like he’s efficient, a volume FT shooter (always good) and can create a bit (opened the season with 10 Assists IIRC). I’ve been hearing comparisons to Brandon Roy. And we’ve all seen how Portland can succeed even without a true PG.

With our current FO, i’m very worried about them making the right decision moving forward.

It’s unfortunate how the Warriors always seem to get high draft picks in weak drafts.

I do certainly agree with this statement +10000000. POB was the latest and one of the worst picks we’ve ever had, but like you said a weak draft class.

Rubio is rumored to not wanting to declare this year and will wait till next year, mainly due to a contract that needs a buyout. The contract does end next year sadly. Brandon Jennings has had more playing time then Ricky, who just came off of a wrist injury I think. Brandon and Ricky are the best PG’s that will come out next year. If none of them declare I really do we pick up Griffin or Thabeet. 2nd Round targets could include Lawson (Would be a homer pick for me lol) and Darren Collison. I do like Kemba Walker, especially if he’s there in the 2nd. There are also 2 other International prospects I’ve hard about, a 67" Russian Guy who’s name I can’t rememebr and a French guy, Rodrigue Beaubois.

One person I do not want is the highly overrated Curry.

Sadly, most other good players are either SG and SF, a spot where we are crowded at -_-

agreed.

I doubt Ty Lawson falls to the second…unless he gets another DUI. He was projected just outside the lottery last year IIRC, so i think its fair to think he’d be in the mix around that territory again.

Beabois i remember hearing about last year as well. I’m pretty sure he’s a combo guard with lightning quickness. If we do pick up a top flight frontcourt player with a first (like a Griffin or a Thabeet) then we’d have to buy/trade ourselves back into the 2nd round. Our own 2nd rounder is headed to San Antonio via Phoenix from the Zarko trade (I think). Its unfortunate because it’ll probably be a high 2nd rounder too. Guards I’d look to pick up are:

1. Nando De Colo
2. Nick Calathes
3. Greivis Vasquez

Some interesting PG prospects that may pan out if the organization is patient with them. I.E. Not the Warriors LOL.

I think it’ll be interesting to see in 2010 when Rubio comes out to see if he’s the first player taken as John Wall could give him a run for his money. He’s already being likened to Derrick Rose, and we all know how teams absolutely covet his kind of talent.

by Marco Belinelli on Dec 19, 2008 9:58 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Please read entire post

I love when people don’t read the entire post. And then they say, “can’t do it, too much money tied up in Magette”. That’s why I wrote in the OP that they should trade Magette away for some expiring contract to leave room. Or SJax. Or both. But Magette preferrably.

I know that may be easier said then done, but Mullins should be trying to work out some trade like that to clear up the necessary cap room at the end of the season to get Boozer. Should be the number #1 priority.

With all the other guys I mentioned in the OP, Boozer, and whatever lottery pick we get, that is a contender, if you don’t think that would be a great team (if Nelly got his act together), then you are not paying attention.

If they front office doesn’t pull off something like this to fill some obvious holes then season ticket holder will be leaving the Oracle in droves….

by runandgun on Dec 19, 2008 10:32 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

FYI

Maggette might have the most untrade-able contract in the NBA. Especially at this current time. He still has a majority of the 5/50M deal we gave him this summer (fact). Teams are not willing to give up their cap space for the summer of 2010 when LeBron, Wade, Bosh and Amare are the frontliners. Shoot, Dirk, McGrady and Nash could also be FA’s that summer. I’d imagine other teams would rather have these players than Maggette. Taking back Maggette means shipping off a just-as-bad contract back to the warriors. So now remains the question: What team not contending for the services of Lebron and Co. have an equally disgusting contract that they’d like to trade away for the superstar that is Maggette. And preferrably that contract is an expiring one. hmm…let me get back to you.

There’s just too many If’s in this scenario….a good one, i’ll give you that. If we could land Boozer in 2009, then make a solid pick in the high lotto, and get rid of the extra crap on our squad, then we could make the playoffs. We’d probably lack depth is my guess since trading Maggette will probably mean trading Wright/Randolph/Belinelli. Possibly our 1st rounder as well if its a S/T.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Dec 19, 2008 10:57 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but you're making an insane assumption

Why would the Jazz want Maggette under any circumstances?

I’m positive they would rather have cap space than a selfish player who plays the same position as their most expensive player.

by dprodigy19 on Dec 19, 2008 12:38 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I never said trade Magette for Boozer because I think that is unrealistic. I said trade Magette for ANYBODY who has an expiring contract. I know that would be difficult to find out there, but there are 29 teams, 29 different situations, maybe some team on the bubble could have use for Magette in a different system where he could put up points. I don’t know every teams situation or every players contract. But Magette (and SJax) are not completely worthless, they are good veterans that could help somebody.

by runandgun on Dec 19, 2008 1:19 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For the record...

I did read your entire post, and I stand by my comment. The chances that we are able to find takers for Maggs and Jack or Crawford that would bring us back entirely expiring contracts is very low. But even if all the stars align and we are able to scrounge together enough cap space to field a competitive offer, what makes you think he would want to come here? Chances are we’d have to give up some young talent to get another team to eat Magg’s or Jack’s deal so the cupboard would be pretty bare here.

Aside from all that the front office has shown that their priorities are completely opposed to yours. They have signed Maggs, extended Jack and traded Al for a long term deal instead of cap space. If they were thinking along the same lines as you (which wouldn’t be a bad thing) they wouldn’t have done any of those things. They have made a very uncomfortable bed and now we get the pleasure of laying in it.
