Fire Nelly, Patience has run out

As probably most of you are, I am dissapointed with the teams performance thusfar.  But I was not ignorant that the team just lost Baron and Monta was out, I didn't expect the team to be in first place either.

But I did not expect what I have seen thusfar and I am putting most of that blame on the head coach.

Defense---The team on the court looks like the worst coached team in the NBA. When you see a team so undisciplined on defense in regards to moving their feet and getting in front of people, you can blame that on the head coach for no enforcing that.

Offense---When you see a team has its offense basically like a playground offense, the guy with the ball just tries to go 1 on 1 with the defender and score.  THAT is not a very well coached team.

Strong Leadership----When the coach does not stand up to highly paid players that are underperforming and sit them on the bench, especially in a rebuilding year, that also speaks to weakness on the coaches part.

Setting the tone----Saying things to the press like "this team will not make the playoffs"  I don't like that.  Even if you think that is true, keep that to yourself.  Still compete.  The guys on the team still want to win, the fans still want to win.  However much of a longshot you think it is, keep competeing, don't just throw in the towel like that.  Horrible message.  Saying "I'm not having fun coaching this year".  That's not a great message either.  Not to mention your poor body language and hang dog look on the sideline.  Terrible example coach.

Developing Young players----This was the last straw for me.  I didn't like last year how Nelly burned out his starters and then enevitably in the 4th quarter they would fade and the team would lose.  Especially late in the season.  You have to get the backups enough minutes and experience so they can compete and keep the starters fresh.  But fine, this year he is playing the young guys more and we can see flashes of what may be possible from some of them.

But the last straw is his saying to 19 year old Anthony Randolph to tell his agent to seek a trade.  What was he planning on getting out of that?  To ruin an extremely young players confidence?  To completely alienate probably the 2nd most talented young player on the team from the Warriors?  To try to create another Al Harrington situation where a player demands a trade?  That is absolute garbage.  Randolph has more heart then anybody on the team and ton of talent, how do you treat a young player like that?  It's disgusting.

I want Nelly fired.  Promote one of the assistants as interim head coach.  If that assistant does well then sign him long term.  If not, keep him as an assistant next year and hire someone new.  But Nelly absolutely has to go.  His act has way overstayed its welcome.

i agree

today nellie has crossed the line by asking an amazing talent to start looking into trading

i thought he was a complete genius after the playoff series as many do, but it is time we got a “true head coach” who actually teaches team D and is consistent

How about Eric Snow

The thing is.....

I’m not mad at loosing all the games we’re loosing this year, I prepared myself for that but if we’re gonna be loosing, I would rather have our young talents develop and build their confidence for the future……Nellie is not helping out the team in any way, not winning games, not developping the young talents, feuding with everyone in the organization (Mullin, Jackson, Harrington, maybe even Baron)…..everybody chant with me “Fire Don Nelson” “Fire Don Nelson” for the remaining home games until they get rid of him !

LOSING.....its LOSING not loosing!

It's about heart, It's about fight, It's about being a Warrior!

my god, but people are stupid

i hate to be insulting, but all of this clamor to fire nelly is just plain stupid. it’s george bush stupid! in a season where record firings have called to light the thinly veiled, public relations based decision making in the nba, how in the world can anyone advocate firing an experienced, SUCCESFUL coach!? as a warriors fan, it should be 9/11 conspiracy obvious that good, or even servicable coaching, is extremely hard to come by. how many years of carlisimos and st. jeans does it take to make that fact clear?
with regard to the arguments presented above:
defense: we’re playing midget toddlers. good defense just isn’t plausible.
offense: we don’t have a point gaurd. that’s the beginning and end of that.
leadership: has anyone seen maggette lately? rediculous argument…
setting the tone: what harm is there in admitting the incredibly obvious!? is denial on an embarassing scale necessary to win?
developing young players: this could not be more plain. last year he had vets and won 48 games. this year we’ve got nothing BUT young players, so obviously they’re playing.
with regard to the randolph situation, how the hell can any of us objectively form an opinion on this? obviously randolph has talent, but he also makes tons of mistakes on the floor, and who knows what he’s showing in practice, etc? for all we know, he should be traded!
the warriors are the youngest team in the league. they’re low on talent, and they’re best player has yet to play this season. there is no question this year is a bust. the only thing firing nelly represents is a commitment to failure in the future.

“I hate to be insulting but you are stupid” okaaaayyyyyyyy…………… An obvious liberal calls someone a name? Shocker.

To get to the actual points you made:

defense: Just because you are playing small doesn’t mean you can’t move your feet and get in front of somebody. In fact it should be easier to move your feet, smaller players are normally quicker about that. I’m fine if other teams shoot the lights out from the perimeter or even if Yao Ming dunks on someone, but I can’t stand all the easy layups and uncontested shots. That’s on the coach for not making a point of practicing that. I played B-Ball in high school and we were more disciplined about basic fundamental defense then these guys are. Why? Because we practiced it every day. Obvioulsy these guys are not getting that heads up from the coach.
Offense: They have Crawford, he’s a point. Albeit he’s no Jason Kidd or John Stockton, but he can play the position adequately and Belinneli isn’t that bad either. Mix in a screen play, pick and roll, someone cutting to the basket, some movement, some passing, something. I’m begging for a set play. You need a general to impliment that, obvioulsy they don’t have that, that’s why you see so much 1 on 1 stuff. Point stands.
Leadership: I have seen SJax and he’s playing like garbage. And he’s playing hurt. About Magette, I love how you say in one paragraph that no one can know enough to make an opinion about the Randolph situation and then you turn around and imply that Magette is being put on the injured list because he is playing bad. What? How did you make that leap? Don’t contradict yourself like that.
Developing Young Players: He has no choice but to develop them this year, all he has is young players. I don’t give him credit for that. His underusing them last year still stands. But the thing is, now he is holding Randolph back, our best young player who needs playing time isn’t even playing. What is that about. And I will absolutely comment about it. I think a news story about the situation is a good enough source to jump off from. If Nelson told our most talented young player, a 19-year old to tell his agent to seek a trade, how can that be good, you tell me. It can’t, he’s obviously working under a different agenda then the GM, that is not a good situation. It’s obvious to anyone who watches the games how talented Randolph is, he should in no way have gotten 0 minutes in the game tonight. That is garbage and something needs to be done about that, and everything else I posted about.

how in the world can anyone advocate firing an experienced, SUCCESFUL coach!?

But we are not SUCCESSFUL , Nellie has won a lot of games over his career cause he’s coached so many more. The bad defense, small players, poor development, poor game management, awful player relations, etc. ARE nellies fault. He’s the one that made these choices. He too stubborn, he won’t try to win unless he can win with his old system. We need a new coach with a different outlook, not necessarily a younger coach, just a smarter coach, one who can see the problems and focus on change instead of recycling the same old thing.

not that i disagree with your points

just Nellie has had 23 winning seasons out of 30. that’s pretty crazy for a guy who took over 4 really bad teams. yeah, he’s coached so many more – but a lot of guys can’t even say that – why? b/c they don’t win with “less” and most NBA coaches have “less”. only the Phils and Rileys of the world have “more”.

Nellie’s got his flaws, but i’ll give him this – he’s willing to play a brand of ball that win’s with “less” b/c he knows you can’t win a championship w/o “more”. most coaches don’t even realize this and try to coach the championship way, like Winters, Cheeks, Cowens, Skiles, JVG, & Montgomery and get fired b/c they don’t have championship teams.

that closing paragraph, evil monkey

“Nellie’s got his flaws, but…”

is the best analysis I’ve seen on this subject.

I agree and think that with the payroll the way it is the Warriors will have to get more out of less talent.

But the problem is, Don Nelson is currently gettting less out of less talent. That’s a double whammy. I knew going into the season the team would at least start with less talent, but my hope was that with the system and with Nelly pulling the strings the team would at least be competitive in most games. They have not been, its been quite ugly.

You can (or at least I can) watch a game in high school, college, or pros and be able to tell when a team is well-coached. Just by watching the fundamentals on defense, team attitude, how “together” they look on offense. The Warriors are displaying none of that. And that is on the coach.

By Nelsons own admission he has been “soft on defense” (understatement of the season). He is turning over the defensive coaching entirely to Keith Smart. He should turn over the entire job as far as I am concerned, but I will take it.

About his winning record in 23 of 30 seasons, can we go back in a time capsule and get one of those coaches from the earlier days? Because he is getting up there in age. I give him respect for his record, but that means nothing to me now. Last year I had some questions about his coaching, this year much more questions. He even said recently “I’m getting soft in my old age”. That’s not good.

Nelson is trying to trade AR! That should cost him his job right there!!

Its terrifying that there are still people here who could defend and still like Nelson, cause that could mean theres people who work with the warriors who feel the same way.

by THIZZ-A-LOT on Dec 19, 2008 8:22 PM PST reply actions

it's not nellie, stop these posts. nellie is on our side.

and i HIGHLY doubt nellie is trying to trade AR. you can’t just listen to one of the worst tv analysts ever, one who would DO ANYTHING to have his name mentioned in a report, and believe something like that is true. NO TEAM tries to trade their first round pick 25 games into the season, just doesn’t happen.

It sounds like half of this blog thinks they can coach better than Don Nelson.

Oh, coaching an NBA team? That’s easy!

Go to practice and yell at everyone to play defense. CJ Watson will move his feet, and Turiaf will double his block average in half the PT!

Make Crawford and Bellineli into pure points. Great, they will each get 10 and 10 a game, the second coming of Forderon!

Start AR and Wright! Play them 40 minutes a game! They will surely average 20/10 each, with 3 blocks (because they are exactly the same player!)

Bench Jackson and Maggette forever! If they complain throw them in the Sarlacc pit! Feed the front office to the Rancor!

If all of that still doesn’t get us a championship, bring Hendrix back to break Yao’s kneecaps. That’ll show him.
