If you ran the Warriors what would you do to make them into a Contender

Hi everyone i'm new here i just wanted to get your thoughts on this topic.

Star-divide

I've been a Warrior fan since 2003 and i've been hopeing and praying for the Warriors to be a Elite NBA team. I miss the old playoff team but i am looking foward to the future with Wright, Randolph, Ellis, and Biedrins hopefully leading this team to a few finals appreances. But i want to know how the rest of you guys feel about our future heading forward

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I

wouldnt have traded away j rich. that was mistake number 1. that playoff nucleus should have at least been allowed to play one full season together to see what they could do. i dont care how much money it would have cost. number 2, i wouldnt have let baron walk. thats for sure. and i dont think anyone would disagree now.
usually you rebuild a team after they have won or gotten real close to winning a championship, or have a lot of old players. we finally got good and fun to watch again and then it was one bad move after another. hopefully mully can pull one more big “baron davis for speedy claxton” type trade

That’s not really an answer to the question he asked. It’s easy to see what management shouldn’t have done. It has the benefit of hindsight. Given the total and complete lack of time machines, what would you do now and going forward?

what'd I do?! build a god-damned time machine

1. sit Jackson and Maggette a couple more games – let the young’ns play for a couple straight while they get healthy, damn the losses anyway

2. put a plan together to re-incorporate Monta with as decent a rotation as can be made using Crawford as sixth man, Wright starting at PF

3. hope another team blows up it’s roster and we can cherry pick off it

4. hang on to our hats, this ride is going to get rougher down the rail …

all your points.

But one obvious thing that maybe you are trying to be optimistic about?

Mullin is done with this idiotic organization. He will go to the Knicks or Brooklyn/ NJ (whatever that team will be) and build a great team. Then shove it in all our faces.

If you think us Warrior fans are frustrated as hell… Think about how pissed off Mullin is right now.

He used to go on KNBR to praise us Warrior fans and keep us updated to what the Warriors were “trying” to do. He has disappeared and I dont even need to know what the true story because I am sure my speculations are correct.

Don’t trip Mullin. Karama is a B.

Go Warriors still.

i would:

trade away: CJ, williams, maggette, and possibly azabuiki (depending on who we can get with a package)

id play the following people a lot more:
bellineli
randolph
wright
demarcus nelson

I would play 2-3 bigs always, only go to small ball when ellis is back and only against certain lineups

I would play jackson significantly less, he plays much better rested (25 min a game would be good imo)

i would send kurz to the D league for a few months, bring him back up later

i would get us a sick mascot!

i would move us to san fran, or at least change the name to The Bay Area Warriors, and use the blue and gold jerseys with ‘the city’ symbols one em

Frankly, given the contracts that have been handed out, I don’t think it’s realistic to think championship anytime in the next four or five years and indeed, they’ve hamstrung themselves for even being able to improve much towards a playoff team. They’ve really made a mess of things. The only realistic way to improve now is to get lucky in the draft or have someone on the team develop beyond a realistic projection.

Too bad

the pick were going to get is going to be a bust since Nelly wont be playing him that much. Wright, AR, Belli, C-Web were all in the first round, two of them were top tens, and he braely even played them

word

Thanks to Cohan handing the team over to former Cal Poly assistant AD Robert Rowell, we are basically stuck with this line-up for the next two years at least, unless we sacrifice young talent (BAD IDEA when that’s all you have). That being said, here is what they can do (adding to and expanding on jae’s point):

1) Larry Ellison movement. Solves the W’s biggest problem: Cohan and Rowell. This is the one way in which we as fans can have even some tiny impact, maybe, probably not. But still, I keep seeing people write “why would Cohan ever sell? He makes money and it’s the easiest and/ or most fun job in the world”. True, but it is at last conceivable for the fans to make it less fun (and less profitable). Maybe Larry Ellison’s blank check (which is basically his open offer to every sports team owner in the Bay Area) will start to look better.

2)Play the young guys. See last 6,000 posts about why it’s a good idea. Wright, and to a lesser degree Randolph, seem to get better every single time they play extended minutes without fear of being yanked after the first mistake they make.

3) Don’t tank, but ….. screw it, tank. The only way this team will add a contributing player is through the draft and it will need to be a high pick at that. Remember: Boston was only able to get KG because they had the #5 pick to throw in w/ AlJeff. Try to win home games, sacrifice road games to the cause.

4) Accept that we are stuck with Maggs and that getting rid of him is not worth trading away Randolph or Wright. The W’s should stop treating him like the child they regret conceiving and work with him to hopefully improve his game. I know “development” is not something veterans are usually that interested in but you have to think that he has some pride and that things like getting called out by KG have to hurt that pride and make him want to work to be a more a more rounded player (read as “can pass and play D”).

by Lifelong on Dec 19, 2008 6:26 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

Belinelli has definitely exceeded what I thought he’d be at this point. I’m not convinced that he’s much of a point guard, but he seems to have found a rhythm and is becoming an effective player. There’s still hope for the younger guys to get better.

But even a new owner would be a few years away. Give the team an unlimited ‘damn the lux tax’ budget and it’s still not like you can just go out and buy better players immediately. The difference would be that the clock to undo the damage would actually start.

The depressing thing is that two years ago, they had done a good job of undoing the bad contracts of the past. In short order they’ve made a few moves that did little or nothing to improve short term returns and did quite a lot to limit long term flexibility.

+1 - spot on...

…and so friggin frustrating. At the start of the summer — even after Baron opted out — I was stoked at how great a job we’d done getting our salary position in order. I was happy with both the Andris and Monta deals too… But alienating Harrington and losing him for nothing was idiot move #1. Yeah, I said “for nothing”.

Whomever thought Crawford was a good swap clearly watches far less basketball than me, and shouldn’t be making decisions. When Al was pissed, I was content to let him sit “injured” for the season and open up PT for our rooks. Easy for me to say, since I’m not paying his salary, right? Oh, but wait, I’m a season ticket holder. So I AM paying his salary… His trade value would have skyrocketed as his contract got closer to expiring in 2010 (and, by the way, same story with Jackson)… Instead we plugged in another shoot-first, no defense guy to muddle the chemistry. Great strategy in anticipation of Monta’s returning.

And don’t get me started on the Maggette signing. He’s a friggin me-first, post up player - the whole league knows that. On a run-and-gun team? WTF? My only reaction was “well, hopefully we can trade him”. Little did I know he’d fit in so poorly that he’d turn into an albatross within months. Nice!

Oh, and the Jackson and Nellie renewals? Brilliant!

It’s really amazing how fast management derailed a train that — even after losing Baron — looked pretty damned good just a few months ago.

Turiaf was a good signing though. I back that one.

I mean, seriously, stop and think for just a minute. SO WHAT if we had no Maggette, no Crawford, no Harrington (assume he rode the bench), and Jackson with no renewal? Would we be much worse than 7-20? No way, and we’d also have CRAPLOADS of PT for our young guys.

Lest we forget, Monta and Beans are barely 22, and have 5 years to go. I’d be thrilled to wait 2 more years for Randolph and Wright to put on a little weight, mature, and catch up. Seriously. Those 4 in the starting rotation in 2 years, with a point guard (who, by the way, we’d get in this year’s draft after playing sucko development ball all year)… Instead we’ll end up bundling at least half of those guys in package trades just to get rid of the long-term garbage we collected in a matter of a few months… F%ck!

ellis jack randolph wright and biedrins starting. crawford coming off the bench to provide rest for ellis or jack(either one). keep nelson marco azuibuike turiaf as our sparks off the bench. trade maggette for a pf or center,, illgauskas or wallace are old but they can still provide a great backup. pick up 2 veterans that can either play d or rebound like joe smith and lindsay hunter. keep our roster at 12 to keep our options open. dont extend anyones contracts because they usually end up getting worse after they sign an extention. and most importantly fire nelson! lets go maurice cheeks!!

i would..

call up some old favors from other GMs/presidents in the league. If the legit channels aren’t working then it’s time to do some handshaking under the table. All of a sudden, players that you thought were untradable start to move.

I would...

1. Fire Nellie, promote Keith Smart as head coach
2. Give consistent minutes to the young talents with some extra minutes for Wright and Randolph to play alongside each other at the 3 and 4
3. Try to make a run at trading for Boozer or Amare, although this seems almost impossible, giving it a try wont hurt, Boozer and Amare are both going to opt out soon and their current teams might trade them before that, you never know…
4. Lower the price tickets a little
5. Sit back and enjoy

It's a long list...

…and let it be known that I don’t presume to be a genius of any kind. But here are a few.

1. Consolidate the power within the organization. Right now, I have no idea who’s calling the shots. Could be Nelson, Mullin, Rowell, or maybe Chris Cohan just sits in a bathtub full of kitten blood all day and phones in orders. Ideally, I presume I’m the general manager in this scenario, right? So I’d need to have it be clear that I was the final say on personnel decisions.

2. I’d talk to Don Nelson, all his coaches, as well as all the players on the team to get a sense of what people’s different perspectives are going forward.

3. Recognizing that the season is a lost cause, I would wait ten to fifteen games to see if Nelson can be in any way convinced to give starting time to Brandan Wright. If he can’t be, I’d begin actively (but not publicly) searching for possible replacements. Avery Johnson and Maurice Cheeks would be guys I’d want to look into. It’s worth noting that the time at which I start seeking replacements can be moved forward if Don Nelson ever decides to start Rob Kurz again.

4. I would shop Kelenna Azubuike along with Corey Maggette. Maggette never should have happened, and it might help getting rid of him to throw in a solid, inexpensive pro like Kelenna.

5. I’d take a nice, long bubble bath. And then I’d intoxicate myself with marijuana. And then I’d stare at the ceiling for a few minutes. After which I’d scream something obscene upon remember we extended Jackson.

That’s an early list, I admit.

I know multiple things that could help them compete and develop them into winners without...

trading, because that’s the easy way out. This is the “LEAGUE” where everyone, or atleast just about everyone can play. So im going to address this problem without trading for the Amares, Boozers or other superstars we are not getting (LOL). Even though i did love when Baron was here, he went out drinking before a huge game that we needed to make the playoffs (lost respect from me). Without someone of that caliber that can create for himself they can still create for others in Nellys system.
First by getting a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses in Nellys system. In order to play fast paced small ball without a crafty PG the W’s would have to play more 2 or 3 man games right out of the break. Roll the none shooters and spot up the shooters. Guys that have proven to get hot run them off screens and spot up and shoot OPEN 3’s. This would allow them to catch and shoot by stepping into the shot andnot just throwing it up of the dribble. Shooting less out of rhythm 3’s and more driving to the basket to bail yourself out. By doing this it would force officials to make more calls which equates to more FREEthrows and would put other teams players in foul trouble. That would help in the 4th quarter where the W’s seem to struggle. Rebounding….either commit or get back on defense no more guys in no mans land. Im tired of seeing Andris + maybe another guy, depending on who is in, going to the boards and the rest of guys daydreaming around half court… DEFEND THE FASTBREAK!!! If Andris or whoever gets the O board let them finish it or if they decide to bring it back out you can run back to offense with a chance at a perfect 3 with the defense scrambling and the shooter stepping into a shot or he could drive passed the over committed defender.
Jackson, who is a great player, is not a player that can consistently create for himself. He needs to know his role and limitations. I see him more as a “JACK” OF ALL TRADES. He is not perfect at one thing but has multiple great/good aspects to his game. He needs to utilize all of his game and not shoot as much. He needs to build his confidence back up by using his size and leadership to create for others first and himself second. I see his needed role as being more of a glue then this shoot first or no look pass player. Also, Stephen Jack no more complaining to officials during defensive fastbreaks…those points still count.
I could go on a while but i dont want to, they get beat up enough during games. The truth is we have a very young team thats trying to find themselves and getting rid of them is not gonna help. Let the young talent develop within a role and let them struggle..a little. My game plan tweak would help the W’s compete with teams in games when Jack and Crawford are not shooting well and also allow them to play their young talent.

STILL GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!!

Jackson is not a great player. Jackson is a sometimes pretty good player who seemed to be better than that last year. He might be a good player. He is not a great player.

by jae on Dec 19, 2008 11:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Just because he isnt an off the dribble shooter doesnt mean he isnt good..

He isnt playing to his strengths right now. Last year he has someone to create for him so he didnt have to force up his slow a$$ shot. He shoots better stepping into his shot in rhythm. He also seems to feed off other emotional players, so as he gets other players in the game his game would get better too.

by Kenfolks on Dec 19, 2008 11:16 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

What I would do...

1. Fire Don Nelson

He’s definitely an innovator and knows how to get the most out of talent, but I think he is the wrong coach for this roster. We need a coach that is willing to at least attempt to develop young talent as well as instill a defensive mindset.

2. I would write a public apology letter to the loyal fans for the franchise previously destroying their souls.

3. I would want this lineup, or something close to it:

pg- ellis 36 / williams 12 / watson
sg- belinelli 36 / morrow 12
sf- randolph 12 / jackson 36 / maggette
pf- wright 24 / turiaf 24
c- turiaf 12 / biedrins 36

Priority #1: give our young talent a chance.

Marcus Williams would be played. He’s the only real PG we have on this team, FG% be damned. So far we’ve seen what an offense is like without a go-to post scorer and without a real PG who can handle and pass the ball like a PG, and it ain’t pretty.

Belinelli will play and act as “PG” when Monta Ellis is playing next to him, Ellis playing the “SG” role on offense. Ellis will guard the PG and Belinelli will guard the SF. Under no circumstances will Belinelli or Morrow guard forwards.

Randolph will be played, and he will start and will learn how to be a defensive stud in this league against the best of the best.

Wright and Ronny will start and both get plenty of minutes for plenty of defense. Yes, Biedrins will come off of the bench because he can’t guard any starting center. But he will absolutely dominate offensively against second-string centers.

Azubuike is a black hole on offense, not much better than Maggette. Maggette is just Maggette, he’s never been a winning basketball player and he’ll never be a winning basketball player. Same with Jamal Crawford, even though he’s fun to watch. Azubuike, Maggette, and Crawford will be benched and traded away for their worth: expiring contracts and draft picks. Kurz will go to the D-League and score 30+ ppg. And stay in the D-League.

Then we sit and wait until a disgruntled superstar becomes available through trade (if we have developed our trading chips) or until we get lucky in the draft.

by YaHeard on Dec 19, 2008 11:22 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

+1 ...with you, except for Williams

Every time folks get on his jock, I just wonder: have you seen him play this year? He’s been pretty sucko. His assist numbers come in garbage time, and he has zippo outside shot. I was preaching that we should trade for him this past summer, but even I’m willing to admit a mistake… He’s done nothing to prove he should play in the limited minutes he gets. It’s possible that Nellie destroyed his confidence, but if you want to play in the NBA you gotta be a fearless baller…

all this is great and all for improvement

but there’s really only one thing you can do to become a contender – get lucky. the two things to get lucky on?

lottery w/ an obvious Magic, Bird, Lebron, Duncan, Shaq type player

OR

have some top 20 NBA players and just happen to have the perfect crap on your roster (expiring contracts, overrated young players that team w/ “real superstar that they need to trade” wants). preferably for a big – Webber, Sheed, Shaq, KG, Pau.

If I were management, I would’ve kept J Rich and Baron. Resigned Pietrus, and signed Turiaf. Traded Harrington away for Gerald Wallace. I would have also tried to find a way to get David Lee from the Knicks

Our lineup would be

PG: Davis/Ellis/Watson/Nelson
SG: J Rich/Ellis/Belinelli/Morrow
SF: Jackson/Azubuike/Randolph
PF: Wallce/Lee/Randolph
C: Biedrins/Turiaf

Future Lineup i wanna see in 3 years dominating

PG Ellis/Jamal
SG Jack/Marco or Morrow or Azubukie
SF Randolph/Maggette
PF Wright/Turiaf
C Andris/Turiaf
Can you picture this lineup. Corey and jamal coming of the bench doing their thing, you got shooters in Marco and morrow, and then your energy guy in Turiaf. Thats a championship team if everyone is developed the right way.

We’re talking in 3 years here…

by b.radley on Dec 20, 2008 1:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

50 plus win

I think they can win more than 34 games if everyone is playing the right way (Running, rebounding, playing defense and playing exiciting basketball)and the right manegement(Different coahing) Plus this is 3 years from now so Randolph should be entering star status while wright should be developed averageing about 15 to 20 points and 6 to 10 boards. And i think monta can average at least 6 assits at point possibly more. Also Jackson will be the 3rd or 4th option instead of the 1st

by GSW9 on Dec 20, 2008 7:48 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Randolph entering star status would help, but that’s far, far, far from a guaranteed thing. It’s not something that “should” happen. It’s something that might happen with no guarantees and odds not favoring it based on what other guys who have had trouble with their shot selection and turnovers have done as they progressed. I wouldn’t bet on it, though it appears that the Warriors have done just that (or bet on other players on roster being better than they project to be. He has to learn to do two things that appear incredibly difficult for players to learn to do: shoot well and stop turning the ball over. In his plus, he rebounds well enough and that is more difficult to get a guy to improve on, but there’s a reason that 13 other teams passed on him. It’s because the odds of him realizing his “potential” aren’t particularly favorable.

In three years Jax will be 33 and may not be an anything option. Extending him was moronic, positively moronic.

The points/rebounds per game projections are pretty much meaningless without the context of how many shots a guy takes and how many minutes he plays. 22 points per game on 19 shots in 40 minutes doesn’t really help you win that often, but it fools enough people to call that guy a star and give him a cap-crippling contract.

by jae on Dec 20, 2008 9:33 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Jae, I know you're ever mister rational... but...

…at some point you gotta knuckle down and take a bet. Compare what you’ve seen from AR to what you saw from Andris, Monta, Gilbert, or Jamisen in their first year. The things you’re worried about (turnovers and shooting) are teachable. Look and Monta’s midrange shot last year. Brand-spankin new, and lethal.

He’s no sure-fire thing, but god damn he looks like he could have star tattooed all over him… Hang with us, and make the franchise make the bet.

And FWIW I’m soooo with you on the Jackson thing. The clearest sign that, if Rowell is making decisions, he’s a frickin idiot.
