Nelson: Warriors not making playoffs this year [CBS Sports]

Nellie is already on record saying that the 2k8-2k9 Warriors will be counting NBA Super Lotto Balls in May. I can't say the Warriors 5-13 start has done all that much to change my preseason 30 win prediction for this squad either.

But who out there still thinks this team will be in the 2009 NBA Playoffs? Drop your reasons why in the comments and you'll get some serious props come playoff time if they miraculously qualify for the West's elite 8.

All i can say is

the warriors arent out of it, just cuz their 5-13 is no reason to give up considering the fact that there are still 1..2…64 games left in the season. I think the warriors will go on a 7-8 winning streak the next week or so, and will be .500 or close to it by the time monta comes back, we will struggle the first few games back with him, but i think by the 3rd game, the Warriors will start jelling and will make the 8th seed and play the lakers

Playoffs? Nah, a real stretch at this point… we’ve already dug ourselves a nice little hole, and there are at least nine credible teams in West. We’re currently tenth in the conference, and I imagine we’ll be exactly there at season’s end.

Having said that, I think playing .500 ball from here on out is very possible, for three reasons:

1) The much-discussed return of Monta will be a huge help.

2) The much-discussed move to bigger lineups would be a huge help.

3) Oracle still seems to give us a boost. Tiny sample size, but we’re 3-5 in eight games there with a differential of just 3, as opposed to 2-8 with a differential of -74 on the road. Look at last night - after the most depressing road trip we’ve had in years, the Oracle crowd came out and cheered hard. They’re good fans, and they usually give us a big boost even in bad years… it’s been a long time since we were outright bad at home. Our schedule is especially home-heavy starting in January, when Monta returns… the combination of those variables could lead to a nice stretch of games.

The first and third things should more or less take care of themselves. The second thing is the only one that’s up in the air. I would think Nellie will be forced to play Wright and Turiaf more, just because the reasons for doing it are staring him in the face… on the other hand, those reasons have been staring him in the face for the past two weeks and he’s ignored them.

Is this team capable of going 32-32 from here? I think so. 35-47 and tenth in the conference sounds about right to me. Sucks to be in that lower-lottery no-man’s-land, but I’ll be happy if we can see some better basketball from here on out.

Argh, friggin’ strikethrus. Our differential at home is minus 3; our differential on the road is minus 74.

5-13 start?

What was our record after 18 games last season? I’m not saying we’ll make the playoffs but I do see a lot of positive areas of our play and our players development. With the clips, sacto, spurs and mavs not playing so well there’s always hope. Right now I think we’re the 9th spot? That’s not horrible given our lackluster play recently. If Nellie faces up to the problems and implements solutions we might snag the 8th spot and if we do I think we could cause some damage since that would mean we’d be on a rising curve.
Here’s what I think it will take. Montay returns healthy and plays the 2 spot, Crawford embraces the point and distributes, Jax plays like the miami game, Magette doesn’t shoot from beyond the free throw line ever, Wright learns to rebound like Morrow, Rudolf learns to play the game not his repertoire, K-Buki gets his legs back and his shot returns, Morrow gets to play his stroke back into shape, CJ continues his excellent backup minutes, Turiaff too, Dris stays healthy and out of the spotlight, We get some good minutes from kurz, hendrix, demarcus, etc.

haha your kidding right?

No playoffs this year. Don’t even suggest it. We lost our core after last season and now we’re working with a bunch of rookies (aka newbs) and veterans who think they’re big shots. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few less wins if we can get a nice draft pick who can impact and help out our team right away.

Usually losing a game

On December 1st doesnt ruin your season, but last nights loss did. That was about as a bad of a loss I have seen over the 25 years with the Warriors and there have been a lot bad losses. The only chance they have is to run off a 6 to 8 game winning streak, and that needs to happen sooner rather than later.

by pbra17 on Dec 2, 2008 3:12 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So our season is over because we lost a game by ONE point?

All the mistakes that we made in the end are LITTLE mistakes. Go big when you need a defensive rebound at crunch time, and make sure you pay attention when you pass the ball inbounds. That’s it.

Geez, no need to give up just because of a devastating loss. This team will learn from little mistakes like that. We played GREAT. You’re acting like we lost by 40 points against a depleted and bad team.

by Five Ten Entertainment on Dec 2, 2008 5:58 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the problem...

that we are running into (in addition to poor execution) is that on a young team trying to gel, losing a bunch of games by five points or less – and especially the Miami game – can begin to be demoralizing. We need(ed) to win a few close ones or our guys will start to tune out. You heard Maggette already say “I’m used to being in this situation” – which is interpreted as “I’m used to losing a lot”. That’s not a good thing to get used to, and he’s one of our veterans!

+1 Fully agree

This form should change its name to “Golden State of Knitting” because the “Minds” seem to be elsewhere.

I for one, lay my hat in the ring to say, we make the playoffs. It’s a steep mountain, but I have faith this team can work out the missing link – DEFENSE

It's about heart, It's about fight, It's about being a Warrior!

thank you

nice to see a real fan comes out and doesn’t give up, the beauty of sports is that you never know what’s gonna happen (see 2007 NY Giants, or even 2007 GSW), my only question is why is biedrins never in the end of close games, we could use a rebound on game winning-tying shots..(udonis haslem)

I think the Dubs make the 2009 NBA Playoffs...

If Nellie is dedicated to play Turiaf and Biedrins on the court at the same time in every given game for the rest of the season while giving Turiaf 37 minutes a game perhaps?

I don’t see why this can’t happen. He can play AR and BW as backup centers for most situations if his main concern is “Biedrins getting into foul trouble.”

We got enough firepower in Overcrowded 6’5 Point Guards that he could do whatever with G-F combos and mismatch opponents with.

Hot daughit I ain’t over last night’s loss yet.

Go Warriors still.

20-25 wins

I think this is where Nellie is shooting for. He’s tanking the season for a good lottery pick!

Toss up

If I had to bet money one way or another, I would say they miss the playoffs. But, after 18 games, there is no chance that I am ready to throw the towel in on the season.

First off, they have show great play at times. the middle 24 minutes of the Celtics game, for instance. I know we can’t focus on moral victories, but beating the 17-2 defending champs in Boston, late in the game, when the celts were playing rather well shows good signs.

I see no reason why this team won’t be clicking on all cylinders a few games after Monta gets back. Crawford, Monta, Jackson, Maggette and Biedrins, with Morrow, Azubuike, Watson, Turiaf, Randolph and Wright on the bench? No Lakers, but that is not a half-bad line-up, especially if we can commit to playing at least a little bit of defense.

Second, there are a few teams currently in the top-8 in the West that could fall out.
Portland, though I believe they’ll be a championship contender in 2-3 years, will not continue to play this well. They have no veterans in their core of star players, and I think that will bite them in the butt halfway through the season. I’m not saying they miss the playoffs, just saying that I highly doubt they finish second in the west, where they sit right now.

Denver also could miss the playoffs, despite their 12-6 record. Why? Because Carmelo Anthony is averaging ~17 or so ppg since the Billups trade. They are playing great ball, but Melo has not been getting the touches or the points. Does anyone here really think that Carmelo, at his age, is willing to lose his all-star status to win a championship ring?
It took Kobe 12 years to learn to drop his scoring to make his team great, I doubt Carmelo will do it in his 6th year. The nuggets are a very corrupt organization when things go awry, and I see that happening in a few weeks when melo’s numbers don’t jump.

Also, injuries to old players for San Antonio and Phoenix could mean a potential down fall for either of those teams. Houston too.

Also, in response to Psion, I highly highly highly doubt Nellie would even tank a season. Nellie playing to win a good ROOKIE is about as likely as LeBron taking a pay cut to stay in Cleveland. The Mad Scientist’s got way more youth than he knows what to do with as is…..

by bradyk2 on Dec 2, 2008 4:43 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nellie has been accused of tank a few times in his career. In fact he was accused of tank the year before we got C Web.

by Psion on Dec 2, 2008 4:53 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t put it past that tanking this season was in part why he got his contract extension so early in the season.

by Psion on Dec 2, 2008 4:56 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Key words:

Accused and past.
I’m not saying he hasn’t tanked before, but it’s ridiculous to think he will this season. Why?
A) Nellie is well known these days for not playing youngsters. We have tons of young guns who have potential but not minutes.
B) We are the youngest team in the league. Nellie knows what we need is for our veterens to play well, our rookies to get experience, and our team to achieve cohesiveness.

What one can argue is tanking, I argue is Nellie playing the youngsters when he feels the season is over, so that we benefit from it next year.

1 step back, 2 steps forward.

my opinion, at least.

The Warriors WILL Make the Playoffs

We lost against the Heat because we missed a rebound and messed up on an inbounds pass. You seriously think that we’re going to keep messing up on inbounds plays EVERY SINGLE GAME?

Also, this team isn’t going to get worse. We weren’t at our best to begin with. Monta is coming back, and it will change EVERYTHING (except for maybe rebounding).

Look at the 2007 Warriors. Remember the game they lost against the Wizards? Gilbert Arenas got fouled to end the game, and made two free throws to give his team a win. The Warriors couldn’t do anything about it because time was already up. All the Warriors could do is hope that Arenas misses the FT.

Ever since that loss against the Wizards, it sparked our team and the Warriors went on an amazing 16-5 run to make the playoffs.

The Heat almost won the SAME EXACT way that the Wizards won. Udonis Haslem made a shot to send it to overtime, but he also got fouled on the shot. The referee’s didn’t call it. If the refs called the foul, the Warriors would have had to sit and watch as Haslem makes the free throw to win the game.

I feel that the loss against the Heat will have the same IMPACT on the Warriors like the loss against the Wizards of 2007. You guys quickly forgot how good our team played during the game, Crawford is a BALLER and is capable of carrying the team. I believe that the Warriors will play with more HEART and DESIRE now that they experienced a devastating loss from last night. And once Monta comes back, this team will be even more crazy.

Of course, the Warriors aren’t going to go on an amazing 16-5 run to make the playoffs like the 2007 Warriors did; but that’s why this wake-up call happened in DECEMBER, and not March. It gives the Warriors even more time to get back on track.

Laugh at this post now, but I bet you guys had the SAME DOUBT about this team back in 2007, when the odds of them making the playoffs were just as low. Basketball is a game emotion… and with this wild team, a spark can easily cause their emotions to elevate their skills to another level and have them playing great. As corny as that sounds, I still think it’s true and the Warriors still have a chance.

It’s way too EARLY to give up now. If we’re still doing bad around February, MAYBE then it would be a good time to start whining.

It was....

It was when we were something like 6 games below .500, a few weeks after the trade. I believe he said it right before the game vs. Detroit where we crushed the Pistons and went on to win the next 7 of 10 or something and make our crazy run

by bradyk2 on Dec 2, 2008 9:19 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

It was after we had that bad loss to the Wizards. The Warriors were around 6-9 games below .500, there was only 21 games left in the season, and to make it worse we had the toughest remaining schedule in the league.

by Five Ten Entertainment on Dec 2, 2008 10:59 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it was first mentioned after a loss to the Bulls.

Feb 28, 2007.

L 83-113

I think I remember reading the below quote in the papers and then later hearing Don Nelson on KNBR saying it.

"I definitely feel responsible for this," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "I thought I could get this team to the playoffs, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I feel that I failed in a lot of ways, really."

I’m pretty sure he mentioned it again after the loss to the Wizards though, Five Ten.

Point is, we should keep our heads high until the end of the season or once we find out we are officially eliminated from making the playoffs.

Go Warriors still.

No playoffs...

but I don’t think this team is nearly as bad as they look now by the end of the season. I think the team is being mismanaged from top to bottom lately but I still think we have quite a bit of talent and they are bound to pull it together to some degree when Monta comes back and Crawford learns the system and his teammates.

One of the four 20ppg scorers are going to eventually need to come off the bench(if they are all still here). I’m hoping Nellie has the balls (brains) to do that. If one of these guys can embrace a spark-plug role and we could play the big guys we could be pretty good next year. Not great. Certainly not contenders. You know, just pretty good. What Justin.tv taught me

The Clippers vs. the Mavericks last night.

1. Both teams suck. Kinda the reverse of what we’re dealing with. Good teams with real stars who just don’t care.

2. Everyone in the West except for the hated Lakers are playing sucky basketball. The Warriors fans who spend all their creative juices telling us just how awful our players and coaches are just aren’t watching how other teams are playing. It’s the beginning of the season. EVERYONE bites.

3. The Clips were up by 15 at the beginning of the 4th. They have Z-bo, Al Thornton, Eric Gordon, Marcus Camby, and B Davis on the floor. Not a bad squad by any measure. They STILL lose their 15 pt. lead and it’s down to a one possession game at the end. Jason Terry lifted the entire opposing team by their tails and spanked them with a two by four. ON THE LAST POSSESSION Baron dribbles the ball up the court and launches a horrible 3 pt. attempt without even looking at the clock, much less his teammates or the bench. Clippers lose. Against a Mavericks team that is playing like shite, and with Josh Howard on the bench.

Boo hoo boo hoo. The Warriors are starting the season again on a losing streak. Boo hoo, we lost Baron, that CLUTCH CLOSER OF CLOSE GAMES. Boo hoo, Nelson isn’t a masterful genius who ALWAYS outcoaches the opposing team and their genius coach. Boo hoo, we don’t have Elton Brand Kevin Garnett Carlos Boozer and we should trade Bellinelli to get all three. Boo hoo, we didn’t keep our team from two years ago although there isn’t a single team in professional sports who keeps their roster set, unless they get to and/or win the championships.

Atma, you are the worst of all these whiners now. I love your humor and energy, but you seem to have worked yourself into a position regarding the Warriors where you’re really taking it personally that the Warriors didn’t progress past the WE BELIEVE movement. We have a flawed owner, flawed front office, and flawed roster. Almost everybody does. You have to be really really lucky to root for a team who has solved ANY of these intractable problems.

On one message board I waste all my time reading commentary about how Obama has already lost both wars in the Middle East and destroyed the Democrat majority before he’s even taken office. On this board I hear about who we should choose with our lottery pick next year when Monta isn’t even back from injuries. You CONTROL FREAKS gotta find a new hobby and shut the hell up until events on the ground catch up to your hissy fits.

Nellie, Nellie, Nellie....

Nellie is such a hypocrite, if we’re not making the playoffs then give a LOT more PT for Randolph at the 3, Wright at the 4 and Biedrins at the 5 to play together since that’s what we have for the future, Randolph and Wright should get to learn to play with each other, why is he making them compete against each other for PT. I would be more interested in seeing Wright and Randolph develop together than watching Jackon and Maggette scoring 30 points just to loose games.

Warriors are fighting for 10th place

NO CHANCE! Now I am a dubs fan, but im realistic, not pessimistic, but simply at one with reality.

Until they get a big man( Biedrins is not this no matter how many double doubles he puts up, he has no idea how to guard anyone) they will never win any close game especially if you accompany that with the fact that the warriors lost their only playmaker bdiddy. Biedrins also makes over 60million….why? what merits this? the fact that u have money doesn’t mean to spend it just to spend it…dude is worth much less

Then they trade one of their bigger players for another guard in Crawford, the last thing the warriors needed was another guard, a shoot first point guard as well…

CJ Watson on a playoff-caliber team would get a few minutes in the 2nd quarter and thats about it, sure he has heart but this is the NBA…. if u dont have a superior skill set, its irrelevant. AI has heart, but AI is a baller; CJ has heart, CJ is not a baller

Mags…. he is getting paid about $5million more annually than he should be, and im not sure if he is, but if he is the go-to-guy than thats all I need to say about him…. and he plays no defense, he would be the 3rd option on a playoff-caliber team…. instead he is getting paid like a 2nd option minus the talent for it

Randolph/Wright are great rooks… but that’s about it. They sum up this franchise’s history, lots of promise, no results in the win column

Jackson…. I like the guy, but how in the world does he get that extension?? I mean with that move, the front office basically gave up the next 3 years of any chance of making any moves in the offseason( not like the owner would anyways).

Monta Ellis is one of the fastest players in the league, but what most of the Dub’s fanbase seems to forget is that he was able to penetrate and do what he did last season because of Baron Davis and the attention that defenses gave him to allow Monta to roam free…. Now with Bdiddy gone and with Crawford next to him in the backcourt there is no way Monta is going to be that open; he also is not the greatest ball-handler. Last season Jackson would bring it up the majority of the time when Bdiddy was out… not Monta….

Which brings me to the main issue, the front office. This franchise is a perfect example of what happens when you are way under the salary cap and do nothing about it. No matter who your personnel on the court are, if the franchise won’t even try to compete financially you will always become a selling team. The warriors build up players only to see them leave and move on to other teams once they are NBA ready. When you’re rebuilding for over a century then its not the player’s fault.

Nelson is a great motivational coach, horrible if you have a young team, and horrible if you want to play defense and win playoff series…. He also doesn’t seem as invested in this team this year and outside of his contractual obligations why should he be? He is an old coach that feels like he should be coaching a veteran team that has a shot for the title…

Now I am not whining, I am simply being realistic and stating the reason why we are nowhere near .500 and wont be for the rest of the season. Without a commitment to defense, and a true big man that can play defense and has post move(s) this team will simply be entertaining, scoring around 100 a game, but will never close out close games, and will be blown out by playoff teams night in and night out. The problem starts with the owner’s unwillingness to spend money, the salary cap is there in the NBA so that teams dont spend ridiculous amounts of money on their rosters, its not meant so that teams can try to get as far under as possible…. I mean without money backing your team, they will always be composed of overpaid vets. and a bunch of rookie contracts that show promise to appease the fanbase with hopes of the “future” but nothing else…

I am a dubs fan but I mean its pathetic what is going on… look at the Knicks game highlights, I’ve never seen a defense get torn up so much by a simple high pick&roll and that was with the 60million dollar center Biedrins and Randolph in the game…

WC Teams better than the warriors in no specific order:
1) Spurs(dont make the excuse that they are 1 place ahead in the standings, because they were without Manu and Parker and relied on Roger Mason and still are 4 games better than the warriors)
2) The Suns( who is going to guard Shaq? who is going to guard Amare?
3) Portland( their not quite as young as the dubs but have more talent, no one is containing brandon roy, or Aldridge off the glass, Fernandez stretches the defense with his 3’s, Oden/Pryzbilla are better than Biedrins and whomever else can play the 5.
4) New Orleans- self explanitory
5) Utah Jazz – Boozer is the warrior killer
6) Lakers – I mean… lets move on
7) Denver – Billups, Melo, Nene, Kmart, JR Smith off the bench> warriors
8) Houston- this isn’t debatable
thats a solid 8 teams already that are better than the warriors…
9) Dallas-this isnt 2007 anymore, as dysfunctional as they are, that roster is too talented and experienced for the current warriors to ever beat them in a series
10/11) Here is where it gets iffy, but I’d say if not this season the timberwolves with AL Jefferson who kills the warriors, and Memphis with Mayo, Gay, and Marc Gasol… its debatable if that team is better but I mean the fact that its debatable… the memphis grizzlies… that should be a sign right there

And again this cycle of overpaid vets. and rookies will continue until ownership changes or decides to start spending up around the salary cap at the very least… and not hand out 60 million to a big man that plays no defense or boxes out, and 3 year 20something million contracts to an aging vet. ruining future cap space. That whole Mullin/Rowell thing can’t be a positive either, and both are horrible execs. Mullin signed Foyle to that 40million deal, Troy Murphy to his deal, and Dunleavy to his multi-million dollar deal. Rowell got rid of Bdiddy… nuff said

Go DUBS!! lol
