Hard to stay a fan

I find it really hard right now to stay completely loyal to the Warriors. I feel like our management doesn't make bold enough moves. They seem to just put together a good enough team to maybe compete for an 8th seed, and thats it. I like Maggette as a player, but we have Stephen Jackson. We have 4 $10million+ players now and we STILL need a star. I think signing Maggette was done just for the sake of making an okay team. And now we have crawford, who is great to watch, but we have sooo many guards/swing players its getting ridiculous. Unless a big trade is in the works I'm going to be pretty pissed. I've been a huge warrior fan for awhile but I'm getting sick of feeling like the fans have more passion than the owners. At what point do you just say screw you to the ownership and start following teams with smart management like Portland, San Antonio, Boston, etc.  It seems like the Warriors would be better run through voting on this website than with the people we have.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

2007

Out of the 30..

Out of the THIRTY teams in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors were one of the remaining EIGHT teams in the end.

We had a great squad, and all we needed to seriously contend was a good inside presence. We wait 12…

We wait TWELVE ENTIRE years to make it into the postseason. We finally make the playoffs; and then right after our amazing playoff run that SHOCKED the world, the management decides to break the team up so we can start REBUILDING again around Monta and Biedrins. wow.

Of all the indications that Warriors fans have been beaten down, our amazement that we reached the second round of the playoffs is probably the most telling. It’s really not that hard to do, no matter how hard this franchise has made it seem, and it’s certainly not proof that you’re heading anywhere. The Bulls and Nets made the second round that same year… the friggin’ Clippers made it the year before. Surely not all of these teams were magical creations that should never be touched by their front offices.

The Warriors front office has made a number of huge mistakes over the year, but failing to love in love with the ‘06-’07 team was NOT one of them. Trading J-Rich for Brandan Wright was a gutsy, smart call, and the only thing stopping people from declaring that trade an unimitigated success is Nellie’s little-man fetish. The team shouldn’t have dumped Baron if $39M/3Y was really on the table, but being willing to dump Baron if he wanted too much was a good instinct. The hardball they played with Pietrus and Barnes was smart. They evaluated the potential of that team quite smartly.

The last month or so has made me considerably less happy about management, as the Jack extension and the Crawford trade undid a lot of the good things about their earlier discipline. But the moves on the heels of 2007 were smart moves. The “We Believe” team was magical from a fan perspective, but far less so from an objective basketball perspective, and I credit the franchise with recognizing that.

The second round IS hard to make, if you're the WARRIORS.

How many times have we made it to the second round in the last 10 years?

That 2007 team was the closest the team has ever been in recent years at actually contending. We had plenty of the right players to build on. A skilled point guard with great leadership skills, a good amount of scorers, a good mix of veterans, and a good coach. Like I already mentioned, all this team really needed was some inside help. We had some pretty good trading chips to get one too.

The Warriors got outrebounded by 19.6 boards a game during that Warriors/Jazz series, yet Golden State still managed to make every game winnable (well, most of the games). Stephen Jackson missed a three pointer to tie the game in Game 1; Mickael Pietrus missed 2 free throws that would have put the Warriors up 7 points with 50 seconds left in the game, in addition to that, Baron had an unforced turnover that gave the Jazz another possession in the last seconds of that game. In Game 4, the Warriors had a good lead in the final minutes of the game, but didn’t make use of the clock and started chucking shots, giving the Jazz the opportunity to catch up.

Also, had the Rockets beaten the Jazz in Game 7 of the Houston/Utah series (in which the Rockets had home court), the Warriors would have faced an even easier opponent in the 2nd round, imo. Who was there to worry about on the Rockets? Yao Ming isn’t athletic like Boozer is, so even though he’d be twice as tall as our big men, he still wouldn’t have been able to keep up with our pace. Also, the Rockets had no depth in the paint. Basically, the Warriors would have just had to worry about Luther Head and Tracy McGrady. I would have really liked our chances against that team.

Basically, the Warriors were capable of being a WCF team in 2007; and there’s probably no way you can convince me that making the WCF is NOT THAT HARD TO DO (unless you’re talking about the Lakers/Hornets/Jazz etc). Hell, what if the Suns somehow miraculously advanced to the WCF to play the Warriors; I like our chances there too. Warriors/Cavaliers Finals? Ok, that’s too much “wondering” and is a waste of time.

Don’t get me wrong though, i’m not complaining about the direction that management decided to go. I just brought up the “One of the last 8 remaining” line because the OP is talking about the moves being made with the team. I’m not really worried with our current team, I still have a lot of faith in them.

forgot to add

Yes, the Bulls and Nets made it to the second round that year. The Eastern Conference sucked anyways.

Sure, the Clippers made it the year before. But the difference is that the Warriors that everyone saw in the NBA Playoffs, only played 21 games together in the regular season (with those 21 games being the toughest remaining schedule in the NBA). That team was capable of doing a lot of damage, and had a ton of firepower. I felt comfortable with them chucking three pointers back then, whereas now I feel that the current Warriors team has to be extremely careful just to win.

The Warriors also got BETTER the season after their playoff run (and it was without J-Rich), whereas the Clippers only got worse (even though they almost made it to the WCF in ’06).

With this team now, i’ll have to see. I still think we can make the playoffs, though. I still like Monta. It’s just that the team we had 2 seasons ago was a great group of guys that we could have utilized better had we kept them together (or upgrade).

From another perspective:

The 06/07 Warriors only got into the playoffs in the first place thanks to a fluky late-season loss by the Clips to the Blazers. They gave up more points than they scored and had the worst defense in the league.

They got insanely hot at the right time and beat a slow, poorly-coached, overrated team against whom they matched up perfectly. Then they were summarily bounced in five games by the Jazz who in turn was trounced by the Spurs.

The next season, the same Spurs — same core players — were trounced by the Lakers, who in turn were trounced by the Celtics.

Even if we had kept that core, we’d be much closer to a team working on our 15th straight playoff-less season than we would to a legit NBA finals contender.

I’m not sure I have “faith” in this current group of guys, but I have a bit more faith in them than I would have in a gimmicky team built around two volume-shooting guards (much as I adored them personally), Barnes and Pietrus playing PF, and Al Harrington playing C.

I dunno, through my rosy glasses, the current core, when healthy — Monta, CJ, Craw, Jack, Buki, Maggs, Randolph, Wright, Turiaf, Biedrins — looks like the longest, deepest, best balanced, most athletic, and most talented team we’ve had since the Webber/Owens/Spree/Hardaway/Mullin crew.

LOOOOLOOOOL

Exactly what I was thinking after just reading the title.

I don’t know; I feel like it’s not a matter of fans having more passion than the owners. It doesn’t seem WRONG. Fans are fans. For owners, it’s a matter of the business world and money. No one can really say that they don’t has passion though; they really might just SUCK. I’m just saying :P

id rather

they just trade crawford, maggette and randolph for a star. even if we lost this year we’d have something to build on

if the warriors didnt have a fan base in one of the wealthiest parts of the countries they would be just like the sonics

so the "REAL FANS"..

dont give a crap about the warriors front office’s bad trades?
are u one of those fans who say, “Oh it’s just Gilbert arenas, we can get a better guard, or OHH its just Antawn Jamison any one can get back-to bcak 51 pt. games, or how ’bout my favorite " OH J-Rich was good during his patient 7 yrs, and first time playoff stint, but we already have a 6-8 shooting, power, point, small center guard, who deserves the money more.”
U c i have seen crap like this for years, and im getting really pissed because not only are the stars going, but so is the talent. and when talent goes, so do the fans, and when fans go, we become the SONICS or now known as the almighty and powerful OKC THUNDER!!!

yea, and F*CK THE BANDWAGON

be patient

were only 18 games into the season and number 8 hasn’t even put his uniform on yet. I know are issues really aren’t scoring right now they are mostly rebounding and defense but when have both of those not been the issue? Im not saying were gonna make the playoffs, hell we might only win 34 games. Were the youngest team in the league…. I would like to see a stat on how many times the youngest team in the league has made the playoffs, anyone? And as for rebuilding around Monta and Biedrins, the second half of last year they were our 2 most consistent players so ya we are building our future around them which is not a bad idea at all they can make a killer combo. I still wish we would have re-signed baron instead of getting maggette just like most people do but that’s not what happened we need to get over it. I know it is hard to get over but lets have some faith….we believe

FOR MOST OF US - BEING A W'S FAN IS ALL WE KNOW

Whether they win 10 games or 60 games, I will be watch every game and get to the Oracle as much as possible. Losing Baron hurt, just like when we moved Webber and never seemed to recover. Being a W’s and Raiders fan, you just learn to be patient and hope for the best.

The real problem is that even when we were bad, we were never lucky enough to get the super-star that we deserve.

People keep talking about badwagon fans and shhhhh but why would they still be here?

If they didint leave after not making the playoffs, they deffinitly left with Baron. So i dont think its bandwagoners that are trippin…

by THIZZ-A-LOT on Dec 2, 2008 9:26 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Harder...

Shoot, it’s harder to be a Raiders fan these days. If they lose two more games this season, which in all likelyhood they will, it’ll be their sixth straight 11-loss season dating back to 2002. That’s some unwanted NFL history.

hard to stay a fan?

i mean, sure its hard to get excited about the dubz right now, but its not hard to stay a fan. there is no team that i love even close to as much as the warriors. i grew up with them, they were the first nba team i really followed, and the first game i went to. so nah, not at all hard to stay a fan. whether i like it or not, the dubz are my one and only team.

i'm with you man

first sporting event i attended, Warriors game. First atheltic jesery i bought, Warriors jersey. I’ve got mad love for this team, but you gotta admit, management is making it really easy to resent this team. Imagine you have a child that youve raised, then your child grows up to become a crack/herion junkie who steals family heirlooms (wedding rings and such) to pawn for drug money.. there comes a time where you even gotta let your kid go. yanno…

Ugh.

We’ve been so much worse that this before. Posts like this make me long for the days before we made the playoffs, when we had no bandwagon jumpers. We have some excellent (though flawed) players who are fun to watch and give their all. We are not the Lakers, Spurs, or even the Jazz. Get over it! All it takes is a lucky draft pick (see: Hornets, New Orleans) to turn a decent team into a very good ballclub. We are a decent team that needs time to get together. Dry your eyes, keep the faith, and lose Nellie!
