Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Don Nelson - Early signs of Alzheimer's

I remember seeing a funny youtube video about George W. Bush and believe that we may be seeing some similar signs in Nellie. Please review and add some thoughts of your own. Remember he is 68 years old!

10 warning signs of Alzheimer's:

1. Memory loss.

  • NELSON: We're the worst defensive team in the league, anyway.
  • Q: That's not true, you've said so yourself.
  • NELSON: I understand.

2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks.

  • Designing a play in which his team in-bounds the ball - coming out of a T.O.

3. Problems with language.

  • Nellie quote: "Brandan is ready to play more. So I'm going to play him, and I hope I'm not breaking my word... And as I said before the game, Brandan is ready. I've held him back a few games where he probably should have played, but I think it's to the point now where he needs to grow into his position "

4. Disorientation to time and place.

  • Nellie quote: "We would play a team that's one hour away 300 miles away from home. That would be fun."

5. Poor or decreased judgment.

  • Continually playing small ball despite a roster that is increasingly unsuccessful at it.

6. Problems with abstract thinking.

  • The idea of a substitution pattern or changing coaching philosophies??

7. Misplacing things.

  • How about Wright, Randolph and Belinelli - just to name a few.

8. Changes in mood or behavior.

  • Last year after a loss to Minnesota Nelson went from angry to disappointed all in the same breath.
      • "I'll be a little careful what I say because I'm angry. I'm disappointed, among other things."

9. Changes in personality.  - He never would have admitted this in years past.

  • "I've decided to identify one of my weaknesses at this point in my life, which is I'm not tough enough anymore. I'm a little soft as I get older and I feel like I haven't done a very good job defensively this year".

10. Loss of initiative.

  • 7-20 and relinquishing coaching duties - Need I say more?

Stupid

I don’t joke about stuff like that.

I just love it how Nellie says any number of obviously untrue and misleading things and the press decides to eat his shit up as endearing and cute; as if it were just a part of his personality and a part of his “mad scientist crazy schemes,” but, when juxtaposed to something like this, it should become clear that Nellie isn’t simply some deceptive mad genius but just an old man that gets off on babbling away to the first thing that comes to mind.

unless you actually think Nellie has the disease i find this post very insulting. after watching my grandfather get destroyed by alzheimer’s, these jokes just aren’t funny.

these jokes just aren’t funny.

As an oldtimer I can tell you that we do joke about it all the time and we hope we don’t know that we got it if we do get it. Your grandfather would be content to know that you miss him so don’t stay sad too long, laughter is good dope.

When did this blog get so serious? Get over yourself. And I agree this is about as (un)funny as the rest of the sarcastic rants or trade proposals or political/narcissitic debates on this website.

Well...

While it probably seemed harmless when you posted it, if you have ever seen someone you care about deteriorate due to Alzheimers it can be pretty painful to read someone making light of it.

it didn't seem harmless...

it seemed less than harmless.

Both of my Grandmothers have Alzheimers...

Shoot, they don’t even know who I am anymore. I’m one click away from deleting this.

"When did this blog get so serious?"

I was fine with:

Screw Nellie…
Fire Nellie…
Nellie Sucks…
Trade Nellie…
related posts

But Alzheimers hits home too personal, esp in my life. While I shouldn’t argue on this topic over it being a joke… or whatever you or I think… it’s best I just shut my mouth because Alzheimers is a losing battle in my family and I take this very seriously.

Last summer I tried to cheer my Grandma up with a drawing… her on a hundred dollar bill… she didn’t even know who I am when i gave it to her…

Maybe so...

and I’m sorry to hear about your personal situation. However, I do have to point out that there is a difference between using “The early signs of Alzheimer’s” as a platform to point out some humorous (or not so – depending on preference) observations regarding Nellie’s behavior and the blatant and unapologetic bashing of people who “really do” have Alzheimer’s. Nowhere in my post do I say anything derogatory about Alzheimer’s as a disease or make light of its significance and ability to cause pain and suffering.

BTW no one seemed to get that upset when I pointed out that Brandon Wright has the presentation of someone with Marfan Syndrome.

Also,

I’m one click away from deleting this.

Is a bit extreme. This is a blog you know; and if the expectation is that every post needs to somehow be PC or not offend anyone – there would never be any posts – because that is impossible. Everybody’s sense of humor is different and for that matter everybody’s opinion – lest I remind people the dangers of blogging so much that you begin to take posts personal. This is not the real world.

all good...

We all have a different way of expressing humor… I agree with that. Thanks for responding in a responsible fashion… I guess its just been a rough 2008… shoot, past week and its only Tuesday!

There’s no need to escalate this issue as much as it is- I think we both got our points accross and vent a little.

Be easy,

and quit bringing up the concept of deterioration in general...

… While it probably seemed harmless when you posted it, if you have ever seen a team deteriorate due to CPOM (consistently poor organizational management) it can be pretty painful to read someone making light of it.

it can be pretty painful to read someone making light of it?

The dreaded CPOM? Sounds like a south park telethon in the making?
